The Lorentz force equation as Fermi-Walker transport in geometrodynamics

A new tetrad introduced within the framework of geometrodynamics for non-null electromagnetic fields allows for the geometrical analysis of the Lorentz force equation and its solutions in curved spacetimes. When expressed in terms of this new tetrad, the electromagnetic field displays explicitly maximum simplification, and the degrees of freedom are manifestly revealed. In our manuscript we are deducing the Lorentz force equation on purely Riemannian geometrical grounds. The equation arises on the basis of Frenet-Serret analysis through the use of our new tetrads and gauge invariance arguments only. The force is deduced through a geometrical construction that precludes any other mathematical form other than the one already accepted. Therefore, a significant and fundamental result such as the first geometrical proof on the necessity of the force in the equation to have the structure already accepted in physics and not any other, is given. Through the use of the Frenet-Serret formulae and gauge invariance arguments we are also able to express in terms of the new tetrad vectors the Lorentz force equation as a generalized form of Fermi-Walker transport.

Tetrads in Yang-Mills geometrodynamics

A new set of tetrads is introduced within the framework of SU(2) X U(1) Yang-Mills field theories in four dimensional Lorentz curved spacetimes. Each one of these tetrads diagonalizes separately and explicitly each term of the Yang-Mills stress-energy tensor. Therefore, three pairs of planes also known as blades, can be defined, and make up the underlying geometrical structure, at each point. These tetrad vectors are gauge dependent on one hand, and also in their definition, there is an additional inherent freedom in the choice of two vector fields. In order to get rid of the gauge dependence, another set of tetrads is defined, such that the only choice we have to make is for the two vector fields. A particular choice is made for these two vector fields such that they are gauge dependent, but the transformation properties of these tetrads are analogous to those already known for curved spacetimes where only electromagnetic fields are present. This analogy allows to establish group isomorphisms between the local gauge group SU(2), and the tensor product of the groups of local Lorentz tetrad transformations, either on blade one or blade two. These theorems show explicitly that the local internal groups of transformations are isomorphic to local spacetime groups of transformations. As an example of application of these new tetrads, we exhibit three new gauge invariant objects, and using these objects we show how to diagonalize the Yang-Mills stress-energy tensor in a gauge invariant way.

Tetrads in Geometrodynamics

A new tetrad is introduced within the framework of geometrodynamics for non-null electromagnetic fields. This tetrad diagonalizes the electromagnetic stress-energy tensor and allows for maximum simplification of the expression of the electromagnetic field. The Einstein-Maxwell equations will also be simplified.

Nonexistence of conformally flat slices of the Kerr spacetime

Initial data for black hole collisions are commonly generated using the Bowen-York approach based on conformally flat 3-geometries. The standard (constant Boyer-Lindquist time) spatial slices of the Kerr spacetime are not conformally flat, so that use of the Bowen-York approach is limited in dealing with rotating holes. We investigate here whether there exist foliations of the Kerr spacetime that are conformally flat. We limit our considerations to foliations that are axisymmetric and that smoothly reduce in the Schwarzschild limit to slices of constant Schwarzschild time. With these restrictions, we show that no conformally flat slices can exist.

The constraint algebra of quantum gravity in the loop representation

We study the algebra of constraints of quantum gravity in the loop representation based on Ashtekar's new variables. We show by direct computation that the quantum commutator algebra reproduces the classical Poisson bracket one, in the limit in which regulators are removed. The calculation illustrates the use of several computational techniques for the loop representation.
