Heavy Vector-like Top Partners at the LHC and flavour constraints

We consider the phenomenology at the Large Hadron Collider of new heavy vector-like quarks which couple mainly to the third generation quarks via Yukawa interactions, with special emphasis on non-standard doublet representations which are less constrained from present data. We also discuss in detail the flavour limits at tree level and loop level and implications of a generalised CKM mixing matrix to these cases.

Scaling of the CKM Matrix in the 5D MSSM

We discuss a five-dimensional Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model compactified on a $S^1/Z_2$ orbifold, looking at, in particular, the one-loop evolution equations of the Yukawa couplings for the quark sector and various flavor observables. Different possibilities for the matter fields are discussed, that is, where they are in the bulk or localised to the brane. The two possibilities give rise to quite different behaviours. By studying the implications of the evolution with the renormalisation group of the Yukawa couplings and of the flavor observables we find that, for a theory that is valid up to the unification scale, the case where fields are localised to the brane, with a large $\tanβ$, would be more easily distinguishable from other scenarios.

Superluminal neutrinos in long baseline experiments and SN1987a

Precise tests of Lorentz invariance in neutrinos can be performed using long baseline experiments such as MINOS and OPERA or neutrinos from astrophysical sources. The MINOS collaboration reported a measurement of the muonic neutrino velocities that hints to super-luminal propagation, very recently confirmed at 6 sigma by OPERA. We consider a general parametrisation which goes beyond the usual linear or quadratic violation considered in quantum-gravitational models. We also propose a toy model showing why Lorentz violation can be specific to the neutrino sector and give rise to a generic energy behaviour E^alpha, where alpha is not necessarily an integer number. Supernova bounds and the preferred MINOS and OPERA regions show a tension, due to the absence of shape distortion in the neutrino bunch in the far detector of MINOS. The energy independence of the effect has also been pointed out by the OPERA results.

Four tops on the real projective plane at LHC

We explore the four top signal ttbar ttbar at the 7 TeV Large Hadron Collider as a probe of physics beyond the standard model. Enhancement of the corresponding cross-section with respect to the Standard Model value can probe the electroweak symmetry breaking sector or test extra dimensional models with heavy Kaluza-Klein gluons and quarks. We perform a detailed analysis including background and detector simulation in the specific case of a universal extra-dimensional model with two extra dimensions compactified using the geometry of the real projective plane. For masses around 600 GeV, a discovery is possible for an effective cross section above 210 fb (36 fb) for 1/fb (10/fb) of integrated luminosity. This implies a branching ratio in tops of the (1,1) heavy photon above 13% (5%). Furthermore, the 4-top signal from the (2,0) and (0,2) tiers can be discovered with an integrated luminosity of 3.5/fb. The results of our simulation can be easily adapted to other models since the background processes are identical. Concerning the signal, typical production mechanisms for the ttbar ttbar signal are similar even if cross-section values may vary considerably depending on the model and the spectrum of the new particles.

The Universal Real Projective Plane: LHC phenomenology at one Loop

The Real Projective Plane is the lowest dimensional orbifold which, when combined with the usual Minkowski space-time, gives rise to a unique model in six flat dimensions possessing an exact Kaluza Klein (KK) parity as a relic symmetry of the broken six dimensional Lorentz group. As a consequence of this property, any model formulated on this background will include a stable Dark Matter candidate. Loop corrections play a crucial role because they remove mass degeneracy in the tiers of KK modes and induce new couplings which mediate decays. We study the full one loop structure of the corrections by means of counter-terms localised on the two singular points. As an application, the phenomenology of the (2,0) and (0,2) tiers is discussed at the LHC. We identify promising signatures with single and di-lepton, top antitop and 4 tops: in the dilepton channel, present data from CMS and ATLAS may already exclude KK masses up to 250 GeV, while by next year they may cover the whole mass range preferred by WMAP data.

Bounds and Decays of New Heavy Vector-like Top Partners

We study the phenomenology of new heavy vector-like fermions that couple to the third generation quarks via Yukawa interactions, covering all the allowed representations under the standard model gauge groups. We first review tree and loop level bounds on these states. We then discuss tree level decays and loop-induced decays to photon or gluon plus top. The main decays at tree level are to W b and/or Z and Higgs plus top via the new Yukawa couplings. The radiative loop decays turn out to be quite close to the naive estimate: in all cases, in the allowed perturbative parameter space, the branching ratios are mildly sensitive on the new Yukawa couplings and small. We therefore conclude that the new states can be observed at the LHC and that the tree level decays can allow to distinguish the different representations. Moreover, the observation of the radiative decays at the LHC would suggest a large Yukawa coupling in the non-perturbative regime.

Universality test of the charged Higgs boson couplings at the LHC and at B factories

Many extensions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics predict the existence of charged Higgs bosons with substantial couplings to SM particles, which would render them observable both directly at the LHC and indirectly at B-factories. For example, the charged Higgs boson couplings to fermions in two doublet Higgs models of type II, are proportional to the ratio of the two Higgs doublet vacuum expectation values (tan(beta)) and fermionic mass factors and could thus be substantial at large tan(beta) and/or for heavy fermions. In this work we perform a model-independent study of the charged Higgs boson couplings at the LHC and at B-factories for large values of tan(beta). We have shown that at high luminosity it is possible to measure the couplings of a charged Higgs boson to the third generation of quarks up to an accuracy of 10%. We further argue that by combining the possible measurements of the LHC and the B-factories, it is possible to perform a universality test of charged Higgs boson couplings to quarks.

Nearby resonances beyond the Breit-Wigner approximation

We consider a description of propagators for particle resonances which takes into account the quantum mechanical interference due to the width of two or more nearby states that have common decay channels, by incorporating the effects arising from the imaginary parts of the one-loop self-energies. Depending on the couplings to the common decay channels, the interference effect, not taken into account in the usual Breit-Wigner approximation, can significantly modify the cross section or make the more long-lived resonance narrower. We give few examples of New Physics models for which the effect is sizable, namely a generic two and multiple Higgs model and neutral vector resonances in Higgsless models. Based on these results we suggest the implementation of a proper treatment of nearby resonances into Monte Carlo generators.

A Dark Matter candidate from Lorentz Invariance in 6 Dimensions

We study the unique 6 dimensional orbifold with chiral fermions where a stable dark matter candidate is present due to Lorentz invariance on the orbifold, with no additional discrete symmetries imposed by hand. We propose a model of Universal Extra Dimensions where a scalar photon of few hundred GeV is a good candidate for dark matter. The spectrum of the model is characteristic of the geometry, and it has clear distinctive features compared to previous models of Kaluza-Klein dark matter. The 5 dimensional limit of this model is the minimal model of natural Kaluza-Klein dark matter. Notwithstanding the low mass range preferred by cosmology, the model will be a challenge for the LHC due to the relatively small splitting between the states in the same KK level.

Higgs to Gamma Gamma beyond the Standard Model

We consider the H to gamma gamma decay process and the gluon fusion production of a light Higgs, and provide a general framework for testing models of new physics beyond the Standard Model. We apply our parametrisation to typical models extending the Standard Model in 4 and 5 dimensions, and show how the parametrisation can be used to discriminate between different scenarios of new physics at the Large Hadron Collider and at future Linear Colliders.

Quantum corrections to the effective neutrino mass operator in 5D MSSM

We discuss in detail a five-dimensional Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model compactified on $S^1/Z_2$ extended by the effective Majorana neutrino mass operator. We study the evolution of neutrino masses and mixings. Masses and angles, in particular the atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$, can be significantly lowered at high energies with respect to their value at low energy.

Role of final state interactions in the B meson decay into two pions

We estimate final state interactions in the B-meson decays into two pions by the Regge model. We consider Pomeron exchange and the leading Regge trajectories that can relate intermediate particles to the final state. In some cases, most notably B => pi^0 pi^0 and B => pi^+ pi^-, the effect is relevant and produces a better agreement between theory and experiment.

K -> pi nu nubar from standard to new physics

Flavour changing neutral current decays are a very sensitive test of the standard model and its extensions. In particular the decay K -> pi nu nubar constitutes a clean way to provide constraints, independent of long distance effects. Motivated by the recent experimental data of the E787 and E865 collaborations and by the difference between the standard model prediction and data, we consider in detail new physics scenarios such as the minimal supersymmetric standard model and R-parity violating supersymmetry. We begin with analysing the impact of new measurements on the standard model result obtaining B(K^+ -> pi^+ nu nubar)=(8.18 +/- 1.22) x 10^(-11). Predictions for other rare kaon decays are discussed, too. Our results allow to improve the limits on R-parity violating couplings with respect to previous analyses.

Little Higgs Models and Precision Electroweak Data

We study the low energy limit of Little Higgs models. The method consists in eliminating the heavy fields using their classical equations of motion in the infinite mass limit. After the elimination of the heavy degrees of freedom we can directly read off deviations from the precision electroweak data. We also examine the effects on the low energy precision experiments.

Search for the lepton flavor violating decay A^0/H^0 --> tau^{+/-} mu^{+/-} at hadron colliders

In the two Higgs doublet model type III and in several other extensions of the Standard Model, there are no discrete symmetries that suppress flavor changing couplings at tree level. The experimental observation of the nu_mu -- nu_tau flavor oscillation may suggest the non-conservation of lepton number. This would lead to the decay of the type A^0/H^0 --> tau^{+/-} mu^{+/-}. We determine the present low energy limit on lepton flavor violating (LFV) couplings from the muon g-2 measurement and discuss the prospects for detecting lepton flavor violating decays at the TeVatron and at the Large Hadron Collider. The achievable bounds on the LFV coupling parameter lambda_{tau mu} are presented.

Charged Higgs in Models with Singlet Neutrino in Large Extra Dimensions

The charged Higgs decay in the channel H^- ->tau_L^- nu in models with a singlet neutrino can provide a test of large extra dimensions models with TeV scale quantum gravity since in the standard two Higgs doublet model type II, H^- -> tau_L^- nu is suppressed. In the present study, we focus on the decay H^- -> tau_L^- nu at the LHC for Higgs masses larger than the top-quark mass.
