Telecloning of qudits via partially entangled states

We study the process of quantum telecloning of $d$-dimensional pure quantum states using partially entangled pure states as quantum channel. This process efficiently mixes optimal universal symmetric cloning with quantum teleportation. It is shown that it is possible to implement universal symmetric telecloning in a probabilistic way using unambiguous state discrimination and quantum state separation schemes. It is also shown that other strategies, such as minimum error discrimination, lead to a decrease in the fidelity of the copies and that certain partially entangled pure states with maximal Schmidt rank lead to an average telecloning fidelity which is always above the optimal fidelity of measuring and preparation of quantum states. We also discuss the case of partially entangled pure states with non-maximal Schmidt rank. The results presented here are valid for arbitrary numbers of copies of a single input qudit state of any dimension.

Quantum localized states in photonic flat-band lattices

The localization of light in flat-band lattices has been recently proposed and experimentally demonstrated in several configurations, assuming a classical description of light. Here, we study the problem of light localization in the quantum regime. We focus on quasi one-dimensional and two-dimensional lattices which exhibit a perfect flat-band inside their linear spectrum. Localized quantum states are constructed as eigenstates of the interaction Hamiltonian with a vanishing eigenvalue and a well defined total photon number. These are superpositions of Fock states with probability amplitudes given by positive as well as negative square roots of multinomial coefficients. The classical picture can be recovered by considering poissonian superpositions of localized quantum states with different total photon number. We also study the separability properties of flat band quantum states and apply them to the transmission of information via multi-core fibers, where these states allow for the total passive suppression of photon crosstalk and exhibit robustness against photon losses. At the end, we propose a novel on-chip setup for the experimental preparation of localized quantum states of light for any number of photons.

Observation of dipolar transport in one-dimensional photonic lattices

We experimentally study the transport prop- erties of dipolar and fundamental modes on one di- mensional (1D) coupled waveguide arrays. By carefully modulating a wide optical beam, we are able to effec- tively excite dipolar or fundamental modes to study discrete diffraction (single-site excitation) and gaussian beam propagation (multi-site excitation plus a phase gradient). We observe that dipolar modes experience a larger spreading area due to an effective larger coupling constant, which is found to be more than two times larger than the one for fundamental modes. Addition- ally, we study the effect of non-diagonal disorder and find that while fundamental modes are already trapped on a weakly disorder array, dipoles are still able to prop- agate across the system.

Device-Independent Certification of a Nonprojective Qubit Measurement

Quantum measurements on a two-level system can have more than two independent outcomes, and in this case, the measurement cannot be projective. Measurements of this general type are essential to an operational approach to quantum theory, but so far, the nonprojective character of a measurement can only be verified experimentally by already assuming a specific quantum model of parts of the experimental setup. Here, we overcome this restriction by using a device-independent approach. In an experiment on pairs of polarization-entangled photonic qubits we violate by more than 8 standard deviations a Bell-like correlation inequality that is valid for all sets of two-outcome measurements in any dimension. We combine this with a device-independent verification that the system is best described by two qubits, which therefore constitutes the first device-independent certification of a nonprojective quantum measurement.

Local and nonlocal probabilistic cloning of qubit states via partially entangled twin photons

Recently, the nonlocal optimal probabilistic cloning (NLOPC) of two non-orthogonal qubit states has been proposed [Phys. Rev. A 86, 052332 (2012)] by means of an experimental setup based on a pair of twin photons in a maximally entangled state. Here we study the performance of the NLOPC protocol when implemented via a partially entangled state. We show that the errors introduced by the use of partial entanglement can be undone by applying a quantum state discrimination process. Since quantum state discrimination is a probabilistic process the correction succeeds with a certain probability but produces perfect clones. We also studied how to modified the setup to produce local copies.

Analytical model for waveguide light propagation and applications

We study the polarization properties of elliptical femtosecond-laser-written waveguides arrays. A new analytical model is presented to explain the asymmetry of the spatial transverse profiles of linearly polarized modes in these waveguides. This asymmetry produces a polarization dependent coupling coefficient, between adjacent waveguides, which strongly affects the propagation of light in a lattice. Our analysis explains how this effect can be exploited to tune the final intensity distribution of light propagated through the array, and links the properties of a polarizing beam splitter in integrated optical circuits to the geometry of the waveguides.

Hybrid photonic entanglement: Realization, characterization and applications

We show that the quantum disentanglement eraser implemented on a two-photon system from parametric down-conversion is a general method to create hybrid photonic entanglement, namely the entanglement between different degrees of freedom of the photon pair. To demonstrate this, we generate and characterize a source with tunable degree of hybrid entanglement between two qubits, one encoded in the transverse momentum and position of a photon, and the other in the polarization of its partner. In addition, we show that a simple extension of our setup enables the generation of two-photon qubit-qudit hybrid entangled states. Finally, we discuss the advantages that this type of entanglement can bring for an optical quantum network.

Estimation of quantum channels with finite resources

We investigate the problem of determining the parameters that describe a quantum channel. It is assumed that the users of the channel have at best only partial knowledge of it and make use of a finite amount of resources to estimate it. We discuss simple protocols for the estimation of the parameters of several classes of channels that are studied in the current literature. We define two different quantitative measures of the quality of the estimation schemes, one based on the standard deviation, the other one on the fidelity. The possibility of protocols that employ entangled particles is also considered. It turns out that the use of entangled particles as a new kind of nonclassical resource enhances the estimation quality of some classes of quantum channel. Further, the investigated methods allow us to extend them to higher dimensional quantum systems.

Efficient bipartite quantum state purification in arbitrary dimensional Hilbert spaces

A new purification scheme is proposed which applies to arbitrary dimensional bipartite quantum systems. It is based on the repeated application of a special class of nonlinear quantum maps and a single, local unitary operation. This special class of nonlinear quantum maps is generated in a natural way by a hermitian generalized XOR-gate. The proposed purification scheme offers two major advantages, namely it does not require local depolarization operations at each step of the purification procedure and it purifies more efficiently than other know purification schemes.

Generalized quantum XOR-gate for quantum teleportation and state purification in arbitrary dimensional Hilbert spaces

A generalization of the quantum XOR-gate is presented which operates in arbitrary dimensional Hilbert spaces. Together with one-particle Fourier transforms this gate is capable of performing a variety of tasks which are important for quantum information processing in arbitrary dimensional Hilbert spaces. Among these tasks are the preparation of Bell states, quantum teleportation and quantum state purification. A physical realization of this generalized XOR-gate is proposed which is based on non-linear optical elements.

Error Avoiding Quantum Codes and Dynamical Stabilization of Grover's Algorithm

An error avoiding quantum code is presented which is capable of stabilizing Grover's quantum search algorithm against a particular class of coherent errors. This error avoiding code consists of states only which are factorizable in the computational basis. Furthermore, its redundancy is smaller than the one which is achievable with a general error correcting quantum code saturating the quantum Hamming bound. The fact that this code consists of factorizable states only may offer advantages for the implementation of quantum gates in the error free subspace.
