Analytic meronic black holes, gravitating solitons and higher spins in the Einstein $SU(N)$-Yang-Mills theory

We construct meronic black holes and solitons in the Einstein $SU(N)$-Yang-Mills theory in $D=4$ and $D=5$ dimensions. These analytical solutions are found by combining the generalized hedgehog ansatz with the Euler parameterization of the $SU(N)$ group from which the Yang-Mills equations are automatically satisfied for all values of $N$ while the Einstein equations can be solved analytically. We explicitly show the role that the color number $N$ plays in the black hole thermodynamics as well as in the gravitational spin from isospin effect. Two remarkable results of our analysis are that, firstly, meronic black holes can be distinguished by colored black holes by looking at the spin from isospin effect (which is absent in the latter but present in the former). Secondly, using the theory of non-embedded ansatz for $SU(N)$ together with the spin from isospin effect, one can build fields of arbitrary high spin out of scalar fields charged under the gauge group. Hence, one can analyze interacting higher spin fields in asymptotically flat space-times without "introducing by hand" higher spin fields. Our analysis also discloses an interesting difference between the spin from isospin effect in $D=4$ and in $D=5$.

Analytic multi-Baryonic solutions in the SU(N)-Skyrme model at finite density

We construct explicit analytic solutions of the $SU(N)$-Skyrme model (for generic $N$) suitable to describe different phases of nuclear pasta at finite volume in $(3+1)$ dimensions. The first type are crystals of Baryonic tubes (nuclear spaghetti) while the second type are smooth Baryonic layers (nuclear lasagna). Both, the ansatz for the spaghetti and the ansatz for the lasagna phases, reduce the complete set of Skyrme field equations to just one integrable equation for the profile within sectors of arbitrary high topological charge. We compute explicitly the total energy of both configurations in terms of the flavor number, the density and the Baryonic charge. Remarkably, our analytic results allow to compare explicitly the physical properties of nuclear spaghetti and lasagna phases. Our construction shows explicitly that, at lower densities, configurations with $N=2$ light flavors are favored while, at higher densities, configurations with $N=3$ are favored. Our construction also proves that in the high density regime (but still well within the range of validity of the Skyrme model) the lasagna configurations are favored while at low density the spaghetti configurations are favored. Moreover, the integrability property of the present configurations is not spoiled by the inclusion of the subleading corrections to the Skyrme model arising in the 't Hooft expansion. Finally, we briefly discuss the large $N$ limit of our configurations.

Inhomogeneous pion condensed phase hosting topologically stable baryons

We discuss the inhomogeneous pion condensed phase within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. We show how the general expression of the condensate can be obtained solving three coupled differential equations, expressing how the pion fields are modulated in space. Upon using some simplifying assumptions, we determine an analytic solution in (3+1)-dimensions. The obtained inhomogeneous condensate is characterized by a non-vanishing topological charge, which can be identified with the baryonic number. In this way, we obtain an inhomogeneous system of pions hosting an arbitrary number of baryons at fixed positions in space.

Analytic non-homogeneous condensates in the $(2+1)$-dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs-Chern-Simons theory at finite density

We construct the first analytic examples of non-homogeneous condensates in the Georgi-Glashow model at finite density in $(2+1)$ dimensions. The non-homogeneous condensates, which live within a cylinder of finite spatial volume, possess a novel topological charge that prevents them from decaying in the trivial vacuum. Also the non-Abelian magnetic flux can be computed explicitly. These solutions exist for constant and non-constant Higgs profile and, depending on the length of the cylinder, finite density transitions occur. In the case in which the Higgs profile is not constant, the full system of coupled field equations reduce to the Lamé equation for the gauge field (the Higgs field being an elliptic function). For large values of this length, the energetically favored configuration is the one with a constant Higgs profile, while, for small values, it is the one with non-constant Higgs profile. The non-Abelian Chern-Simons term can also be included without spoiling the integrability properties of these configurations. Finally, we study the stability of the solutions under a particular type of perturbations.

Crystals of gauged solitons, force free plasma and resurgence

We show that the (3+1)-dimensional gauged non-linear sigma model minimally coupled to a U(1) gauge field possesses analytic solutions representing gauged solitons at finite Baryon density whose electromagnetic field is a Force Free Plasma. These gauged solitons manifest a crystalline structure and generate in a very natural way persistent currents able to support Force Free Plasma electromagnetic fields. The trajectories of charged test particles moving within these configurations can be characterized. Quite surprisingly, despite the non-integrable nature of the theory, some of the perturbations of these gauged solitons allow to identify a proper resurgent parameter. In particular, the perturbations of the solitons profile are related to the Lamé operator. On the other hand, the electromagnetic perturbations on the configurations satisfy a two-dimensional effective Schrodinger equation, where the soliton background interacts with the electromagnetic perturbations through an effective two-dimensional periodic potential. We studied numerically the band energy spectrum for different values of the free parameters of the theory and we found that bands-gaps are modulated by the potential strength. Finally we compare our crystal solutions with those of the (1+1)- dimesional Gross-Neveu model.

Pion crystals hosting topologically stable baryons

We construct analytic (3+1)-dimensional inhomogeneous and topologically non-trivial pion systems using chiral perturbation theory. We discuss the effect of isospin asymmetry with vanishing electromagnetic interactions as well as some particular configurations with non-vanishing electromagnetic interactions. The inhomogeneous configurations of the pion fields are characterized by a non-vanishing topological charge that can be identified with baryons surrounded by a cloud of pions. This system supports a topologically protected persistent superflow. When the electromagnetic field is turned on the superflow corresponds to an electromagnetic supercurrent.

Exact solutions for a ferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

On the two-dimensional non-linear $Σ$-model describing a ferromagnet with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we build three families of exact static solutions depending on a single Cartesian variable. One of them describes a clockwise helix configuration, that characterizes the ground state of the system. A second one corresponds to a counterclockwise helix, representing an excited state. These two families of solutions are parameterized by a continuous parameter that depends on the magnetic field and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling. Finally, the third family exists only for isolated values of the same parameter, corresponding to a discrete family of Viviani curves on the target sphere. The degeneracy of the resulting spectrum suggests that an approximate symmetry may emerge at specific values of the magnetic field, at which additional solutions could then exist.

Gravitating superconducting solitons in the (3+1)-dimensional Einstein gauged non-linear sigma-model

In this paper, we construct the first analytic examples of (3+1)-dimensional self-gravitating regular cosmic tube solutions which are superconducting, free of curvature singularities and with non-trivial topological charge in the Einstein-SU(2) non-linear sigma-model. These gravitating topological solitons at a large distance from the axis look like a (boosted) cosmic string with an angular defect given by the parameters of the theory, and near the axis, the parameters of the solutions can be chosen so that the metric is singularity free and without angular defect. The curvature is concentrated on a tube around the axis. These solutions are similar to the Cohen-Kaplan global string but regular everywhere, and the non-linear sigma-model regularizes the gravitating global string in a similar way as a non-Abelian field regularizes the Dirac monopole. Also, these solutions can be promoted to those of the fully coupled Einstein-Maxwell non-linear sigma-model in which the non-linear sigma-model is minimally coupled both to the U(1) gauge field and to General Relativity. The analysis shows that these solutions behave as superconductors as they carry a persistent current even when the U(1) field vanishes. Such persistent current cannot be continuously deformed to zero as it is tied to the topological charge of the solutions themselves. The peculiar features of the gravitational lensing of these gravitating solitons are shortly discussed.

Crystals of superconducting Baryonic tubes in the low energy limit of QCD at finite density

The low energy limit of QCD admits (crystals of) superconducting Baryonic tubes at finite density. We begin with the Maxwell-gauged Skyrme model in (3+1)-dimensions (which is the low energy limit of QCD in the leading order of the large N expansion). We construct an ansatz able to reduce the seven coupled field equations in a sector of high Baryonic charge to just one linear Schrodinger-like equation with an effective potential (which can be computed explicitly) periodic in the two spatial directions orthogonal to the axis of the tubes. The solutions represent ordered arrays of Baryonic superconducting tubes as (most of) the Baryonic charge and total energy is concentrated in the tube-shaped regions. They carry a persistent current (which vanishes outside the tubes) even in the limit of vanishing U(1) gauge field: such a current cannot be deformed continuously to zero as it is tied to the topological charge. Then, we discuss the subleading corrections in the 't Hooft expansion to the Skyrme model (called usually \mathcal{L}_{6}$, $\mathcal{L}_{8}$ and so on). Remarkably, the very same ansatz allows to construct analytically these crystals of superconducting Baryonic tubes at any order in the 't Hooft expansion. Thus, no matter how many subleading terms are included, these ordered arrays of gauged solitons are described by the same ansatz and keep their main properties manifesting a universal character. On the other hand, the subleading terms can affect the stability properties of the configurations setting lower bounds on the allowed Baryon density.

Analytic self-gravitating $4$-Baryons, traversable NUT-AdS wormholes, flat space-time multi-Skyrmions at finite volume and a novel transition in the $SU(3)$-Skyrme model

We construct the first analytic self-gravitating Skyrmions with higher Baryon charge in four dimensions for the $SU(3)$-Skyrme-Einstein-$Λ$ theory by combining the generalized hedgehog ansatz with the approach developed by Balachandran et al. to describe the first (numerical) example of a non-embedded solution. These are genuine $SU(3)$ analytic solutions instead of trivial embeddings of $SU(2)$ into $SU(3)$ and its geometry is that of a Bianchi IX Universe. The Skyrme ansatz is chosen in such a way that the Skyrme field equations are identically satisfied in the sector with Baryon charge 4. The field equations reduce to a dynamical system for the three Bianchi IX scale factors. Particular solutions are explicitly analyzed. Traversable wormholes with NUT-AdS asymptotics supported by a topologically non-trivial $SU(3)$-sigma soliton are also constructed. The self-gravitating solutions admit also a suitable flat limit giving rise to Skyrmions of charge 4 confined in a box of finite volume maintaining the integrability of the $SU(3)$ Skyrme field equations. This formalism discloses a novel transition at finite Baryon density arising from the competition between embedded and non-embedded solutions in which the non-embedded solutions prevail at high density while are suppressed at low densities.

Analytic crystals of solitons in the four dimensional gauged non-linear sigma model

The first analytic topologically non-trivial solutions in the (3+1)-dimensional gauged non-linear sigma model representing multi-solitons at finite volume with manifest ordered structures generating their own electromagnetic field are presented. The complete set of seven coupled non-linear field equations of the gauged non-linear sigma model together with the corresponding Maxwell equations are reduced in a self-consistent way to just one linear Schrodinger-like equation in two dimensions. The corresponding two dimensional periodic potential can be computed explicitly in terms of the solitons profile. The present construction keeps alive the topological charge of the gauged solitons. Both the energy density and the topological charge density are periodic and the positions of their peaks show a crystalline order. These solitons describe configurations in which (most of) the topological charge and total energy are concentrated within three-dimensional tube-shaped regions. The electric and magnetic fields vanish in the center of the tubes and take their maximum values on their surface while the electromagnetic current is contained within these tube-shaped regions. Electromagnetic perturbations of these families of gauged solitons are shortly discussed.

Analytic (3+1)-dimensional gauged Skyrmions, Heun and Whittaker-Hill equations and resurgence

We show that one can reduce the coupled system of seven field equations of the (3+1)-dimensional gauged Skyrme model to the Heun equation (which, for suitable choices of the parameters, can be further reduced to the Whittaker-Hill equation) in two non-trivial topological sectors. Hence, one can get a complete analytic description of gauged solitons in (3+1) dimensions living within a finite volume in terms of classic results in the theory of differential equations and Kummer's con uent functions. We consider here two types of gauged solitons: gauged Skyrmions and gauged time-crystals (namely, gauged solitons periodic in time, whose time-period is protected by a winding number). The dependence of the energy of the gauged Skyrmions on the Baryon charge can be determined explicitly. The theory of Kummer's confluent functions leads to a quantization condition for the period of the time-crystals. Likewise, the theory of Sturm-Liouville operators gives rise to a quantization condition for the volume occupied by the gauged Skyrmions. The present analysis also discloses that resurgent techniques are very well suited to deal with the gauged Skyrme model as well. In particular, we discuss a very nice relation between the electromagnetic perturbations of the gauged Skyrmions and the Mathieu equation which allows to use many of the modern resurgence techniques to determine the behavior of the spectrum of these perturbations.

$D=10$ dyonic black holes in string inspired models

We consider string inspired models in $D=10$ spacetime dimensions, which include couplings with 1- and 3-form fields as well as $R^4$ higher curvature corrections to the gravitational action. For such models, we explicitly construct a family of black hole solutions with both electric and magnetic charges, and with different horizon topologies. The solutions exhibit some features similar to those of self-gravitating monopoles in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory, which we discuss. When higher-curvature corrections are switched off, our solutions reduce to charged $p$-brane solutions previously studied in the literature. Novel qualitative features appear due to the $R^4$ terms, though. Such is the case of the emergence of branch singularities for charged solutions that, nonetheless, can be shielded by the event horizon.

Charged black strings and black branes in Lovelock theories

It is well known that the Reissner-Norstrom solution of Einstein-Maxwell theory cannot be cylindrically extended to higher dimension, as with the black hole solutions in vacuum. In this paper we show that this result is circumvented in Lovelock gravity. We prove that the theory containing only the quadratic Lovelock term, the Gauss-Bonnet term, minimally coupled to a $U(1)$ field, admits homogeneous black string and black brane solutions characterized by the mass, charge and volume of the flat directions. We also show that theories containing a single Lovelock term of order $n$ in the Lagrangian coupled to a $(p-1)$-form field admit simple oxidations only when $n$ equals $p$, giving rise to new, exact, charged black branes in higher curvature gravity. For General Relativity this stands for a Lagrangian containing the Einstein-Hilbert term coupled to a massless scalar field, and no-hair theorems in this case forbid the existence of black branes. In all these cases the field equations acquire an invariance under a global scaling scale transformation of the metric. As explicit examples we construct new magnetically charged black branes for cubic Lovelock theory coupled to a Kalb-Ramond field in dimensions $(3m+2)+q$, with $m$ and $q$ integers, and the latter denoting the number of extended flat directions. We also construct dyonic solutions in quartic Lovelock theory in dimension $(4m+2)+q$.

Black hole and BTZ-black string in the Einstein-SU(2) Skyrme model

We present novel analytic hairy black holes with a flat base manifold in the (3+1)-dimensional Einstein SU(2)-Skyrme system with negative cosmological constant. We also construct (3+1)-dimensional black strings in the Einstein $SU(2)$-non linear sigma model theory with negative cosmological constant. The geometry of these black strings is a three-dimensional charged BTZ black hole times a line, without any warp factor. The thermodynamics of these configurations (and its dependence on the discrete hairy parameter) is analyzed in details. A very rich phase diagram emerges.

Solitons in a cavity for the Einstein-SU(2) Non-linear Sigma Model and Skyrme model

In this work, taking advantage of the Generalized Hedgehog Ansatz, we construct new self-gravitating solitons in a cavity with mirror-like boundary conditions for the SU(2) Non-linear Sigma Model and Skyrme model. For spherically symmetric spacetimes, we are able to reduce the system to three independent equations that are numerically integrated. There are two branches of well-behaved solutions. The first branch is defined for arbitrary values of the Skyrme coupling and therefore also leads to a gravitating soliton in the Non-linear Sigma Model, while the second branch exists only for non-vanishing Skyrme coupling. The solutions are quasi-static and in the first branch are characterized by two integration constants that correspond to the frequency of the phase of the Skyrme field and the value of the Skyrme profile at the origin, while in the second branch the latter is the unique parameter characterizing the solutions. These parameters determine the size of the cavity, the redshift at the boundary of the cavity, the energy of the scalar field and the charge associated to a U(1) global symmetry. We also show that within this ansatz, assuming analyticity of the matter fields, there are no spherically symmetric black hole solutions.

Instability of black strings in third-order Lovelock theory

We show that homogeneous black strings of third-order Lovelock theory are unstable under s-wave perturbations. This analysis is done in dimension $D=9$, which is the lowest dimension that allows the existence of homogeneous black strings in a theory that contains only the third-order Lovelock term in the Lagrangian. As is the case in general relativity, the instability is produced by long wavelength perturbations and it stands for the perturbative counterpart of a thermal instability. We also provide a comparative analysis of the instabilities of black strings at a fixed radius in general relativity, Gauss-Bonnet and third-order Lovelock theory. We show that the minimum critical wavelength that triggers the instability grows with the power of the curvature defined in the Lagrangian. The maximum exponential growth during the time of the perturbation is the largest in general relativity and it decreases with the number of curvatures involved in the Lagrangian.

Black Strings in Gauss-Bonnet Theory are Unstable

We report the existence of unstable, s-wave modes, for black strings in Gauss-Bonnet theory (which is quadratic in the curvature) in seven dimensions. This theory admits analytic uniform black strings that in the transverse section are black holes of the same Gauss-Bonnet theory in six dimensions. All the components of the perturbation can be written in terms of a single one and its derivatives. For this latter component we find a master equation which admits bounded solutions provided the characteristic time of the exponential growth of the perturbation is related with the wave number along the extra direction, as it occurs in General-Relativity. It is known that these configurations suffer from a thermal instability, and therefore the results presented here provide evidence for the Gubser-Mitra conjecture in the context of Gauss-Bonnet theory. Due to the non-triviality of the curvature of the background, all the components of the metric perturbation appear in the linearized equations. As it occurs for spherical black holes, these black strings should be obtained as the short distance $r<<α^{1/2}$ limit of the black string solution of Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory, which is not know analytically, where $α$ is the Gauss-Bonnet coupling.
