Intermingled basins: Kan's example on the Riemann sphere

Kan's discovery of dynamical systems with two attractors whose basins of attraction both have full support, featured specific examples of skew product systems of interval diffeomorphisms forced by expanding circle maps. The interval diffeomorphisms are polynomial maps and can hence be considered on the Riemann sphere. We consider the resulting skew product systems of holomorphic maps on the Riemann sphere forced by expanding circle maps, and establish the existence of three attractors whose basins of attraction all have full support and are thus intermingled.

Symmetric homoclinic tangles in reversible dynamical systems have positive topological entropy

We consider reversible vector fields in $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ such that the set of fixed points of the involutory reversing symmetry is $n$-dimensional. Let such system have a smooth one-parameter family of symmetric periodic orbits which is of saddle type in normal directions. We establish that topological entropy is positive when the stable and unstable manifolds of this family of periodic orbits have a strongly-transverse intersection.

Thick attractors with intermingled basins

We construct various novel and elementary examples of dynamics with metric attractors that have intermingled basins. A main ingredient is the introduction of random walks along orbits of a given dynamical system. We develop theory for it and use it in particular to provide examples of thick metric attractors with intermingled basins.

Iterated function systems of affine expanding and contracting maps on the unit interval

We analyze the two-point motions of iterated function systems on the unit interval generated by expanding and contracting affine maps, where the expansion and contraction rates are determined by a pair $(M,N)$ of integers. This dynamics depends on the Lyapunov exponent. For a negative Lyapunov exponent we establish synchronization, meaning convergence of orbits with different initial points. For a vanishing Lyapunov exponent we establish intermittency, where orbits are close for a set of iterates of full density, but are intermittently apart. For a positive Lyapunov exponent we show the existence of an absolutely continuous stationary measure for the two-point dynamics and discuss its consequences. For nonnegative Lyapunov exponent and pairs $(M,N)$ that are multiplicatively dependent integers, we provide explicit expressions for absolutely continuous stationary measures of the two-point motions. These stationary measures are infinite $σ$-finite measures in the case of zero Lyapunov exponent. For varying Lyapunov exponent we find here a phase transition for the system of two-point motions, in which the support of the stationary measure explodes with intermittent dynamics and an infinite stationary measure at the transition point.

Critical intermittency in rational maps

Intermittent dynamics is characterized by long periods of different types of dynamical characteristics, for instance almost periodic dynamics alternated by chaotic dynamics. Critical intermittency is intermittent dynamics that can occur in iterated function systems, and involves a superattracting periodic orbit. This paper will provide and study examples of iterated function systems by two rational maps on the Riemann sphere that give rise to critical intermittency. The main ingredient for this is a superattracting fixed point for one map that is mapped onto a common repelling fixed point by the other map. We include a study of topological properties such as topological transitivity.

Critical intermittency in random interval maps

Critical intermittency stands for a type of intermittent dynamics in iterated function systems, caused by an interplay of a superstable fixed point and a repelling fixed point. We consider critical intermittency for iterated function systems of interval maps and demonstrate the existence of a phase transition when varying probabilities, where the absolutely continuous stationary measure changes between finite and infinite. We discuss further properties of this stationary measure and show that its density is not in $L^q$ for any $q > 1$. This provides a theory of critical intermittency alongside the theory for the well studied Manneville-Pomeau maps, where the intermittency is caused by a neutral fixed point.

On-off intermittency and chaotic walks

We consider a class of skew product maps of interval diffeomorphisms over the doubling map. The interval maps fix the end points of the interval. It is assumed that the system has zero fiber Lyapunov exponent at one endpoint and zero or positive fiber Lyapunov exponent at the other endpoint. We prove the appearance of on-off intermittency. This is done using the equivalent description of chaotic walks: random walks driven by the doubling map. The analysis further relies on approximating the chaotic walks by Markov random walks, that are constructed using Markov partitions for the doubling map.

Asymptotics for a class of iterated random cubic operators

We consider a class of cubic stochastic operators that are motivated by models for evolution of frequencies of genetic types in populations. We take populations with three mutually exclusive genetic types. The long term dynamics of single maps, starting with a generic initial condition where in particular all genetic types occur with positive frequency, is asymptotic to equilibria where either only one genetic type survives, or where all three genetic types occur. We consider a family of independent and identically distributed maps from this class and study its long term dynamics, in particular its random point attractors. The long term dynamics of the random composition of maps is asymptotic, almost surely, to equilibria. In contrast to the deterministic system, for generic initial conditions these can be equilibria with one or two or three types present (depending only on the distribution).

Synchronization in minimal iterated function systems on compact manifolds

We treat synchronization for iterated function systems generated by diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds. Synchronization here means the convergence of orbits starting at different initial conditions when iterated by the same sequence of diffeomorphisms. The iterated function systems admit a description as skew product systems of diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds driven by shift operators. Under open conditions including transitivity and negative fiber Lyapunov exponents, we prove the existence of a unique attracting invariant graph for the skew product system. This explains the occurrence of synchronization. The result extends previous results for iterated function systems by diffeomorphisms on the circle, to arbitrary compact manifolds.

Random interval diffeomorphisms

We consider a class of step skew product systems of interval diffeomorphisms over shift operators, as a means to study random compositions of interval diffeomorphisms. The class is chosen to present in a simplified setting intriguing phenomena of intermingled basins, master-slave synchronization and on-off intermittency. We provide a self-contained discussion of these phenomena.

Atomic disintegrations for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms

Shub & Wilkinson and Ruelle & Wilkinson studied a class of volume preserving diffeomorphisms on the three dimensional torus that are stably ergodic. The diffeomorphisms are partially hyperbolic and admit an invariant central foliation of circles. The foliation is not absolutely continuous, in fact, Ruelle & Wilkinson established that the disintegration of volume along central leaves is atomic. We show that in such a class of volume preserving diffeomorphisms the disintegration of volume along central leaves is a single delta measure. We also formulate a general result for conservative three dimensional skew product like diffeomorphisms on circle bundles, providing conditions for delta measures as disintegrations of the smooth invariant measure.

The Hopf bifurcation with bounded noise

We study Hopf-Andronov bifurcations in a class of random differential equations (RDEs) with bounded noise. We observe that when an ordinary differential equation that undergoes a Hopf bifurcation is subjected to bounded noise then the bifurcation that occurs involves a discontinuous change in the Minimal Forward Invariant set.

Circle diffeomorphisms forced by expanding circle maps

We discuss dynamics of skew product maps defined by circle diffeomorphisms forced by expanding circle maps. We construct an open class of such systems that are robust topologically mixing and for which almost all points in the same fiber converge under iteration. This property follows from the construction of an invariant attracting graph in the natural extension, a skew product of circle diffeomorphisms forced by a solenoid homeomorphism.

Bifurcations of stationary measures of random diffeomorphisms

Random diffeomorphisms with bounded absolutely continuous noise are known to possess a finite number of stationary measures. We discuss dependence of stationary measures on an auxiliary parameter, thus describing bifurcations of families of random diffeomorphisms. A bifurcation theory is developed under mild regularity assumptions on the diffeomorphisms and the noise distribution (e.g. smooth diffeomorphisms with uniformly distributed additive noise are included). We distinguish bifurcations where the density function of a stationary measure varies discontinuously or where the support of a stationary measure varies discontinuously. We establish that generic random diffeomorphisms are stable. Densities of stable stationary measures are shown to be smooth and to depend smoothly on an auxiliary parameter, except at bifurcation values. The bifurcation theory explains the occurrence of transients and intermittency as the main bifurcation phenomena in random diffeomorphisms. Quantitative descriptions by means of average escape times from sets as functions of the parameter are provided. Further quantitative properties are described through the speed of decay of correlations as function of the parameter. Random endomorphisms are studied in one dimension; we show that stable one dimensional random endomorphisms occur open and dense and that in one parameter families bifurcations are typically isolated. We classify codimension one bifurcations for one dimensional random endomorphisms; we distinguish three possible kinds, the random saddle node, the random homoclinic and the random boundary bifurcation. The theory is illustrated on families of random circle diffeomorphisms and random unimodal maps.

Jacobson's Theorem near saddle-node bifurcations

We discuss one parameter families of unimodal maps, with negative Schwarzian derivative, unfolding a saddle-node bifurcation. It was previously shown that for a parameter set of positive Lebesgue density at the bifurcation, the maps possess attracting periodic orbits of high period. We show that there is also a parameter set of positive density at the bifurcation, for which the maps exhibit absolutely continuous invariant measures which are supported on the largest possible interval. We prove that these measures converge weakly to an atomic measure supported on the orbit of the saddle-node point. Using these measures we analyze the intermittent time series that result from the destruction of the periodic attractor in the saddle-node bifurcation and prove asymptotic formulae for the frequency with which orbits visit the region previously occupied by the periodic attractor.

Piecewise smooth one dimensional maps with nowhere vanishing derivative

We consider the dynamics of `nonlinear tent maps': piecewise smooth unimodal maps with nowhere vanishing derivative. We show that if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable, then all its periodic orbits of sufficiently high period are hyperbolic repelling. If additionally all periodic orbits of $f$ are hyperbolic, then $f$ has at most finitely many periodic attractors and there is a hyperbolic expansion outside the basins of these periodic attractors. In particular, if a nonlinear tent map $f$ is not infinitely renormalizable and all its periodic orbits are hyperbolic repelling, then some iterate of $f$ is expanding. In this case, $f$ admits an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure.
