Operator least squares problems and Moore-Penrose inverses in Krein spaces

A Krein space H and bounded linear operators B, C on H are given. Then, some min and max problems about the operators (BX - C)^{#}(BX -C), where X runs over the space of all bounded linear operators on H, are discussed. In each case, a complete answer to the problem, including solvability conditions and characterization of the solutions, is presented. Also, an adequate decomposition of B is considered and the min-max problem is addressed. As a by-product the Moore-Penrose inverse of B is characterized as the only solution of a variational problem. Other generalized inverses are described in a similar fashion as well.

Spectrum of $J$-frame operators

A $J$-frame is a frame $\mathcal{F}$ for a Krein space $(\mathcal{H}, [\, , \,])$ which is compatible with the indefinite inner product $[\, , \, ]$ in the sense that it induces an indefinite reconstruction formula that resembles those produced by orthonormal bases in $\mathcal{H}$. With every $J$-frame the so-called $J$-frame operator is associated, which is a self-adjoint operator in the Krein space $\mathcal{H}$. The $J$-frame operator plays an essential role in the indefinite reconstruction formula. In this paper we characterize the class of $J$-frame operators in a Krein space by a $2\times 2$ block operator representation. The $J$-frame bounds of $\mathcal{F}$ are then recovered as the suprema and infima of the numerical ranges of some uniformly positive operators which are build from the entries of the $2\times 2$ block representation. Moreover, this $2\times 2$ block representation is utilized to obtain enclosures for the spectrum of $J$-frame operators, which finally leads to the construction of a square root. This square root allows a complete description of all $J$-frames associated with a given $J$-frame operator.

The minus order and range additivity

We study the minus order on the algebra of bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space. By giving a characterization in terms of range additivity, we show that the intrinsic nature of the minus order is algebraic. Applications to generalized inverses of the sum of two operators, to systems of operator equations and to optimization problems are also presented.

Weighted least square solutions of the equation AXB-C=0

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a Hilbert space, $L(\mathcal{H})$ the algebra of bounded linear operators on $\mathcal{H}$ and $W \in L(\mathcal{H})$ a positive operator such that $W^{1/2}$ is in the p-Schatten class, for some $1 \leq p< \infty.$ Given $A, B \in L(\mathcal{H})$ with closed range and $C \in L(\mathcal{H}),$ we study the following weighted approximation problem: analize the existence of \begin{equation}\label{eqa1} \underset{X \in L(\mathcal{H})}{min}\Vert AXB-C \Vert_{p,W}, \ \ \ \ (1) \end{equation} where $\Vert X \Vert_{p,W}=\Vert W^{1/2}X \Vert_{p}.$ We also study the related operator approximation problem: analize the existence of \begin{equation} \label{eqa2} \underset{X \in L(\mathcal{H})}{min} (AXB-C)^{*}W(AXB-C), \ \ \ \ (2) \end{equation} where the order is the one induced in $L(\mathcal{H})$ by the cone of positive operators. In this paper we prove that the existence of the minimum of (2) is equivalent to the existence of a solution of the normal equation $A^*W(AXB-C)=0.$ We also give sufficient conditions for the existence of the minimum of (1) and we characterize the operators where the minimum is attained.

Weighted Procrustes problems

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a Hilbert space, $L(\mathcal{H})$ the algebra of bounded linear operators on $\mathcal{H}$ and $W \in L(\mathcal{H})$ a positive operator such that $W^{1/2}$ is in the p-Schatten class, for some $1 \leq p< \infty.$ Given $A \in L(\mathcal{H})$ with closed range and $B \in L(\mathcal{H}),$ we study the following weighted approximation problem: analize the existence of $$\underset{X \in L(\mathcal{H})}{min}\Vert AX-B \Vert_{p,W},$$ where $\Vert X \Vert_{p,W}=\Vert W^{1/2}X \Vert_{p}.$ In this paper we prove that the existence of this minimum is equivalent to a compatibility condition between $R(B)$ and $R(A)$ involving the weight $W,$ and we characterize the operators which minimize this problem as $W$-inverses of $A$ in $R(B).$

On the geometry of normal projections in Krein spaces

Let $\mathcal{H}$ be a Krein space with fundamental symmetry $J$. Along this paper, the geometric structure of the set of $J$-normal projections $\mathcal{Q}$ is studied. The group of $J$-unitary operators $\mathcal{U}_J$ naturally acts on $\mathcal{Q}$. Each orbit of this action turns out to be an analytic homogeneous space of $\mathcal{U}_J$, and a connected component of $\mathcal{Q}$. The relationship between $\mathcal{Q}$ and the set $\mathcal{E}$ of $J$-selfadjoint projections is analized: both sets are analytic submanifolds of $L(\mathcal{H})$ and there is a natural real analytic submersion from $\mathcal{Q}$ onto $\mathcal{E}$, namely $Q\mapsto QQ^\#$. The range of a $J$-normal projection is always a pseudo-regular subspace. Then, for a fixed pseudo-regular subspace $\mathcal{S}$, it is proved that the set of $J$-normal projections onto $\mathcal{S}$ is a covering space of the subset of $J$-normal projections onto $\mathcal{S}$ with fixed regular part.

Range additivity, shorted operator and the Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury formula

We say that two operators A, B have the range additivity property if R(A + B) = R(A) + R(B). In this article we study the relationship between range additivity, shorted operator and certain Hilbert space decomposition known as compatibility. As an application, we extend to infinite dimensional Hilbert space operators a formula by Fill and Fishkind related to the well-known Sherman-Morrison-Woodbury formula.

Weighted projections into closed subspaces

In this paper we study $A$-projections, i.e. operators of a Hilbert space $\HH$ which act as projections when a seminorm is considered in $\HH$. $A$-projections were introduced by Mitra and Rao \cite{[MitRao74]} for finite dimensional spaces. We relate this concept to the theory of compatibility between positive operators and closed subspaces of $\HH$. We also study the relationship between weighted least squares problems and compatibility.

Products of orthogonal projections and polar decompositions

We characterize the sets $\XX$ of all products $PQ$, and $\YY$ of all products $PQP$, where $P,Q$ run over all orthogonal projections and we solve the problems $\arg\min\{\|P-Q\|: (P,Q) \in \cal Z\}$, for $\cal Z=\XX$ or $\YY.$ We also determine the polar decompositions and Moore-Penrose pseudoinverses of elements of $\XX.$

Metric and homogeneous structure of closed range operators

Let $\CR$ be the set of all bounded linear operators between Hilbert spaces $\cH, \cK$. This paper is devoted to the study of the topological properties of $\CR$ if certain natural metrics are considered on it. We also define an action of the group $\G_\cH\times\G_\cK$ on $\CR$ and determine the orbits of this action. These orbits determine a stratification of the set of Fredholm and semi-Fredholm operators. Finally, we calculate the distance, with respect to some of the metrics mentioned above, between different orbits of $\CR$.

Projections in operator ranges

If $\H$ is a Hilbert space, $A$ is a positive bounded linear operator on $\cH$ and $\cS$ is a closed subspace of $\cH$, the relative position between $\cS$ and $A^{-1}(\cS \orto)$ establishes a notion of compatibility. We show that the compatibility of $(A,\cS)$ is equivalent to the existence of a convenient orthogonal projection in the operator range $R(A^{1/2})$ with its canonical Hilbertian structure.
