Bilinear optimal control for the Stokes-Brinkman equations: a priori and a posteriori error analyses

We analyze a bilinear optimal control problem for the Stokes--Brinkman equations: the control variable enters the state equations as a coefficient. In two- and three-dimensional Lipschitz domains, we perform a complete continuous analysis that includes the existence of solutions and first- and second-order optimality conditions. We also develop two finite element methods that differ fundamentally in whether the admissible control set is discretized or not. For each of the proposed methods, we perform a convergence analysis and derive a priori error estimates; the latter under the assumption that the domain is convex. Finally, assuming that the domain is Lipschitz, we develop an a posteriori error estimator for each discretization scheme, obtain a global reliability bound, and investigate local efficiency estimates.

The linear elasticity system under singular forces

We study the linear elasticity system subject to singular forces. We show existence and uniqueness of solutions in two frameworks: weighted Sobolev spaces, where the weight belongs to the Muckenhoupt class $A_2$; and standard Sobolev spaces where the integrability index is less than $d/(d-1)$; $d$ is the spatial dimension. We propose a standard finite element scheme and provide optimal error estimates in the $\mathbf{L}^2$--norm. By proving well posedness, we clarify some issues concerning the study of generalized mixed problems in Banach spaces.

Numerical discretizations of a convective Brinkman-Forchheimer model under singular forcing

In two-dimensional Lipschitz domains, we analyze a Brinkman--Darcy--Forchheimer problem on the weighted spaces $\mathbf{H}_0^1(\omega,\Omega) \times L^2(\omega,\Omega)/\mathbb{R}$, where $\omega$ belongs to the Muckenhoupt class $A_2$. Under a suitable smallness assumption, we prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution. We propose a finite element method and obtain a quasi-best approximation result in the energy norm \emph{\`a la C\'ea} under the assumption that $\Omega$ is convex. We also develop an a posteriori error estimator and study its reliability and efficiency properties. Finally, we develop an adaptive method that yields optimal experimental convergence rates for the numerical examples we perform.

Numerical discretization of a Darcy-Forchheimer problem coupled with a singular heat equation

In Lipschitz domains, we study a Darcy-Forchheimer problem coupled with a singular heat equation by a nonlinear forcing term depending on the temperature. By singular we mean that the heat source corresponds to a Dirac measure. We establish the existence of solutions for a model that allows a diffusion coefficient in the heat equation depending on the temperature. For such a model, we also propose a finite element discretization scheme and provide an a priori convergence analysis. In the case that the aforementioned diffusion coefficient is constant, we devise an a posteriori error estimator and investigate reliability and efficiency properties. We conclude by devising an adaptive loop based on the proposed error estimator and presenting numerical experiments.

Error estimates for a pointwise tracking optimal control problem of a semilinear elliptic equation

We consider a pointwise tracking optimal control problem for a semilinear elliptic partial differential equation. We derive the existence of optimal solutions and analyze first and, necessary and sufficient, second order optimality conditions. We devise two strategies of discretization to approximate a solution of the optimal control problem: a semidiscrete scheme where the control variable is not discretized -- the so-called variational discretization approach -- and a fully discrete scheme where the control variable is discretized with piecewise constant functions. For both solution techniques, we analyze convergence properties of discretizations and derive error estimates.

The stationary Boussinesq problem under singular forcing

In Lipschitz two and three dimensional domains, we study the existence for the so--called Boussinesq model of thermally driven convection under singular forcing. By singular we mean that the heat source is allowed to belong to $H^{-1}(\varpi,\Omega)$, where $\varpi$ is a weight in the Muckenhoupt class $A_2$ that is regular near the boundary. We propose a finite element scheme and, under the assumption that the domain is convex and $\varpi^{-1} \in A_1$, show its convergence. In the case that the thermal diffusion and viscosity are constants, we propose an a posteriori error estimator and show its reliability and local efficiency.

A posteriori error estimates for a distributed optimal control problem of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations

In two and three dimensional Lipschitz, but not necessarily convex, polytopal domains, we propose and analyze a posteriori error estimators for an optimal control problem involving the stationary Navier--Stokes equations; control constraints are also considered. We devise two strategies of discretization: a semi discrete scheme where the control variable is not discretized -- the so-called variational discrezation approach -- and a fully discrete scheme where the control is discretized with piecewise quadratic functions. For each solution solution technique, we design an a posteriori error estimator that can be decomposed as the sum of contributions related to the discretization of the state and adjoint equations and, additionally, the discretization of the control variable for when the fully discrete scheme is considered. We prove that the devised error estimators are reliable and also explore local efficiency estimates. Numerical experiments reveal a competitive performance of adaptive loops based on the devised a posteriori error estimators.

A posteriori error estimates for semilinear optimal control problems

We devise and analyze a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator for a semilinear control-constrained optimal control problem in two and three dimensional Lipschitz, but not necessarily convex, polytopal domains. We consider a fully discrete scheme that discretizes the state and adjoint equations with piecewise linear functions and the control variable with piecewise constant functions. The devised error estimator can be decomposed as the sum of three contributions which are associated to the discretization of the state and adjoint equations and the control variable. We extend our results to a scheme that approximates the control variable with piecewise linear functions and also to a scheme that approximates a nondifferentiable optimal control problem. We illustrate the theory with two and three-dimensional numerical examples.

A posteriori error estimates for the stationary Navier Stokes equations with Dirac measures

In two dimensions, we propose and analyze an a posteriori error estimator for finite element approximations of the stationary Navier Stokes equations with singular sources on Lipschitz, but not necessarily convex, polygonal domains. Under a smallness assumption on the continuous and discrete solutions, we prove that the devised error estimator is reliable and locally efficient. We illustrate the theory with numerical examples.

Adaptive finite element methods for the pointwise tracking optimal control problem of the Stokes equations

We propose and analyze a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator for the pointwise tracking optimal control problem of the Stokes equations. This linear-quadratic optimal control problem entails the minimization of a cost functional that involves point evaluations of the velocity field that solves the state equations. This leads to an adjoint problem with a linear combination of Dirac measures as a forcing term and whose solution exhibits reduced regularity properties. We also consider constraints on the control variable. The proposed a posteriori error estimator can be decomposed as the sum of four contributions: three contributions related to the discretization of the state and adjoint equations, and another contribution that accounts for the discretization of the control variable. On the basis of the devised a posteriori error estimator, we design a simple adaptive strategy that illustrates our theory and exhibits a competitive performance.

A posteriori error estimates for the Stokes problem with singular sources

We propose a posteriori error estimators for classical low-order inf-sup stable and stabilized finite element approximations of the Stokes problem with singular sources in two and three dimensional Lipschitz, but not necessarily convex, polytopal domains. The designed error estimators are proven to be reliable and locally efficient. On the basis of these estimators we design a simple adaptive strategy that yields optimal rates of convergence for the numerical examples that we perform.

Adaptive finite element methods for sparse PDE-constrained optimization

We propose and analyze reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimators for an optimal control problem that involves a nondifferentiable cost functional, the Poisson problem as state equation and control constraints. To approximate the solution to the state and adjoint equations we consider a piecewise linear finite element method whereas three different strategies are used to approximate the control variable: piecewise constant discretization, piecewise linear discretization and the so-called variational discretization approach. For the first two aforementioned solution techniques we devise an error estimator that can be decomposed as the sum of four contributions: two contributions that account for the discretization of the control variable and the associated subgradient, and two contributions related to the discretization of the state and adjoint equations. The error estimator for the variational discretization approach is decomposed only in two contributions that are related to the discretization of the state and adjoint equations. On the basis of the devised a posteriori error estimators, we design simple adaptive strategies that yield optimal rates of convergence for the numerical examples that we perform.

A posteriori error estimation for finite element approximations of a PDE-constrained optimization problem in fluid dynamics

We derive globally reliable a posteriori error estimators for a PDE-constrained optimization problem involving linear models in fluid dynamics as state equation; control constraints are also considered. The corresponding local error indicators are locally efficient. The assumptions under which we perform the analysis are such that they can be satisfied for a wide variety of stabilized finite element methods as well as for standard finite element methods. When stabilized methods are considered, no a priori relation between the stabilization terms for the state and adjoint equations is required. If a lower bound for the inf-sup constant is available, a posteriori error estimators that are fully computable and provide guaranteed upper bounds on the norm of the error can be obtained. We illustrate the theory with numerical examples.

An a posteriori error analysis for an optimal control problem with point sources

We propose and analyze a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator for a constrained linear-quadratic optimal control problem involving Dirac measures; the control variable corresponds to the amplitude of forces modeled as point sources. The proposed a posteriori error estimator is defined as the sum of two contributions, which come from the state and adjoint equations. The estimator associated with the state equation is based on Muckenhoupt weighted Sobolev spaces, while the one associated with the adjoint is in the maximum norm and allows for unbounded right hand sides. The analysis is valid for two and three-dimensional domains. On the basis of the devised a posteriori error estimator, we design a simple adaptive strategy that yields optimal rates of convergence for the numerical examples that we perform.

Adaptive finite element methods for an optimal control problem involving Dirac measures

The purpose of this work is the design and analysis of a reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimator for the so-called pointwise tracking optimal control problem. This linear-quadratic optimal control problem entails the minimization of a cost functional that involves point evaluations of the state, thus leading to an adjoint problem with Dirac measures on the right hand side; control constraints are also considered. The proposed error estimator relies on a posteriori error estimates in the maximum norm for the state and in Muckenhoupt weighted Sobolev spaces for the adjoint state. We present an analysis that is valid for two and three-dimensional domains. We conclude by presenting several numerical experiments which reveal the competitive performance of adaptive methods based on the devised error estimator.

A posteriori error estimators for stabilized finite element approximations of an optimal control problem

We derive a posteriori error estimators for an optimal control problem governed by a convection-reaction-diffusion equation; control constraints are also considered. We consider a family of low-order stabilized finite element methods to approximate the solutions to the state and adjoint equations. We obtain a fully computable a posteriori error estimator for the optimal control problem. All the constants that appear in the upper bound for the error are fully specified. Therefore, the proposed estimator can be used as a stopping criterion in adaptive algorithms. We also obtain a robust a posteriori error estimator for when the error is measured in a norm that involves the dual norm of the convective derivative. Numerical examples, in two and three dimensions, are presented to illustrate the theory.
