Creep dynamics of elastic manifolds via exact transition pathways

We study the steady state of driven elastic strings in disordered media below the depinning threshold. In the low-temperature limit, for a fixed sample, the steady state is dominated by a single configuration, which we determine exactly from the transition pathways between metastable states. We obtain the dynamical phase diagram in this limit. At variance with a thermodynamic phase transition, the depinning transition is not associated with a divergent length scale of the steady state below threshold, but only of the transient dynamics. We discuss the distribution of barrier heights, and check the validity of the dynamic phase diagram at small but finite temperatures using Langevin simulations. The phase diagram continues to hold for broken statistical tilt symmetry. We point out the relevance of our results for experiments of creep motion in elastic interfaces.

Transverse rectification of disorder-induced fluctuations in a driven system

We study numerically the overdamped motion of particles driven in a two dimensional ratchet potential. In the proposed design, of the so-called geometrical-ratchet type, the mean velocity of a single particle in response to a constant force has a transverse component that can be induced by the presence of thermal or other unbiased fluctuations. We find that additional quenched disorder can strongly enhance the transverse drift at low temperatures, in spite of reducing the transverse mobility. We show that, under general conditions, the rectified transverse velocity of a driven particle fluid is equivalent to the response of a one dimensional flashing ratchet working at a drive-dependent effective temperature, defined through generalized Einstein relations.

Nonequilibrium structures and dynamic transitions in driven vortex lattices with disorder

We review our studies of elastic lattices driven by an external force $F$ in the presence of random disorder, which correspond to the case of vortices in superconducting thin films driven by external currents. Above a critical force $F_c$ we find two dynamical phase transitions at $F_p$ and $F_t$, with $F_c<F_p<F_t$. At $F_p$ there is a transition from plastic flow to smectic flow where the noise is isotropic and there is a peak in the differential resistance. At $F_t$ there is a sharp transition to a frozen transverse solid where both the transverse noise and the diffussion fall down abruptly and therefore the vortex motion is localized in the transverse direction. From a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation we calculate an effective transverse temperature in the fluid moving phases. We find that the effective temperature decreases with increasing driving force and becomes equal to the equilibrium melting temperature when the dynamic transverse freezing occurs.

Short time relaxation of a driven elastic string in a random medium

We study numerically the relaxation of a driven elastic string in a two dimensional pinning landscape. The relaxation of the string, initially flat, is governed by a growing length $L(t)$ separating the short steady-state equilibrated lengthscales, from the large lengthscales that keep memory of the initial condition. We find a macroscopic short time regime where relaxation is universal, both above and below the depinning threshold, different from the one expected for standard critical phenomena. Below the threshold, the zero temperature relaxation towards the first pinned configuration provides a novel, experimentally convenient way to access all the critical exponents of the depinning transition independently.

Dynamics below the depinning threshold

We study the steady-state low-temperature dynamics of an elastic line in a disordered medium below the depinning threshold. Analogously to the equilibrium dynamics, in the limit T->0, the steady state is dominated by a single configuration which is occupied with probability one. We develop an exact algorithm to target this dominant configuration and to analyze its geometrical properties as a function of the driving force. The roughness exponent of the line at large scales is identical to the one at depinning. No length scale diverges in the steady state regime as the depinning threshold is approached from below. We do find, a divergent length, but it is associated only with the transient relaxation between metastable states.

Non-equilibrium relaxation of an elastic string in random media

We study the relaxation of an elastic string in a two dimensional pinning landscape using Langevin dynamics simulations. The relaxation of a line, initially flat, is characterized by a growing length, $L(t)$, separating the equilibrated short length scales from the flat long distance geometry that keep memory of the initial condition. We find that, in the long time limit, $L(t)$ has a non--algebraic growth, consistent with thermally activated jumps over barriers with power law scaling, $U(L) \sim L^θ$.

Pinning Induced Fluctuations on Driven Vortices

We use a simple model to study the long time fluctuations induced by random pinning on the motion of driven non--interacting vortices. We find that vortex motion seen from the co--moving frame is diffusive and anisotropic, with velocity dependent diffusion constants. Longitudinal and transverse diffusion constants cross at a characteristic velocity where diffusion is isotropic. The diffusion front is elongated in the direction of the drive at low velocities and elongated in the transverse direction at large velocities. We find that the mobility in the driven direction is always larger than the transverse mobility, and becomes isotropic only in the large velocity limit.

Creep motion of an elastic string in a random potential

We study the creep motion of an elastic string in a two dimensional pinning landscape by Langevin dynamics simulations. We find that the Velocity-Force characteristics are well described by the creep formula predicted from phenomenological scaling arguments. We analyze the creep exponent $μ$, and the roughness exponent $ζ$. Two regimes are identified: when the temperature is larger than the strength of the disorder we find $μ\approx 1/4$ and $ζ\approx 2/3$, in agreement with the quasi-equilibrium-nucleation picture of creep motion; on the contrary, lowering enough the temperature, the values of $μ$ and $ζ$ increase showing a strong violation of the latter picture.

Heterogeneous dynamics of the three dimensional Coulomb glass out of equilibrium

The non-equilibrium relaxational properties of a three dimensional Coulomb glass model are investigated by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Our results suggest a transition from stationary to non-stationary dynamics at the equilibrium glass transition temperature of the system. Below the transition the dynamic correlation functions loose time translation invariance and electron diffusion is anomalous. Two groups of carriers can be identified at each time scale, electrons whose motion is diffusive within a selected time window and electrons that during the same time interval remain confined in small regions in space. During the relaxation that follows a temperature quench an exchange of electrons between these two groups takes place and the non-equilibrium excess of diffusive electrons initially present decreases logarithmically with time as the system relaxes. This bimodal dynamical heterogeneity persists at higher temperatures when time translation invariance is restored and electron diffusion is normal. The occupancy of the two dynamical modes is then stationary and its temperature dependence reflects a crossover between a low-temperature regime with a high concentration of electrons forming fluctuating dipoles and a high-temperature regime in which the concentration of diffusive electrons is high.

Effective temperature in driven vortex lattices with random pinning

We study numerically correlation and response functions in non-equilibrium driven vortex lattices with random pinning. From a generalized fluctuation-dissipation relation we calculate an effective transverse temperature in the fluid moving phase. We find that the effective temperature decreases with increasing driving force and becomes equal to the equilibrium melting temperature when the dynamic transverse freezing occurs. We also discuss how the effective temperature can be measured experimentally from a generalized Kubo formula.

Mode-locking in driven vortex lattices with transverse ac-drive and random pinning

We find mode-locking steps in simulated current-voltage characteristics of driven vortex lattices with {\it random} pinning when an applied ac-current is {\it perpendicular} to the dc-current. For low frequencies there is mode-locking only above a non-zero threshold ac force amplitude, while for large frequencies there is mode-locking for any small ac force. This is consistent with the nature of {\it transverse} temporal order in the different regimes in the absence of an applied ac-drive. For large frequencies the magnitude of the fundamental mode-locked step depends linearly with the ac force amplitude.

Phase-locking of driven vortex lattices with transverse ac-force and periodic pinning

For a vortex lattice moving in a periodic array we show analytically and numerically that a new type of phase locking occurs in the presence of a longitudinal dc driving force and a transverse ac driving force. This phase locking is distinct from the Shapiro step phase locking found with longitudinal ac drives. We show that an increase in critical current and a fundamental phase locked step width scale with the square of the driving ac amplitude. Our results should carry over to other systems such as vortex motion in Josephson-junction arrays.

Mode-locking in ac-driven vortex lattices with random pinning

We find mode-locking steps in simulated current-voltage characteristics of ac-driven vortex lattices with {\it random} pinning. For low frequencies there is mode-locking above a finite ac force amplitude, while for large frequencies there is mode-locking for any small ac force. This is correlated with the nature of temporal order in the different regimes in the absence of ac drive. The mode-locked state is a frozen solid pinned in the moving reference of frame, and the depinning from the step shows plastic flow and hysteresis.

Dynamical ordering in the c-axis in 3D driven vortex lattices

We present molecular dynamics simulations of driven vortices in layered superconductors in the presence of an external homogeneous force and point disorder. We use a model introduced by J.R.Clem for describing 3D vortex lines as stacks of 2D pancake vortices where only magnetic interactions are considered and the Josephson interlayer coupling is neglected. We numerically evaluate the long-range magnetic interaction between pancake vortices exactly. We analyze the vortex correlation along the field direction on (c-axis). We find that above the critical current, in the ``plastic flow'' regime, pancakes are completely uncorrelated in the c-direction. When increasing the current, there is an onset of correlation along the c-axis at the transition from plastic flow to a moving smectic phase. This transition coincides with the peak in the differential resistance.

Hall noise and transverse freezing in driven vortex lattices

We study driven vortices lattices in superconducting thin films. Above the critical force $F_c$ we find two dynamical phase transitions at $F_p$ and $F_t$, which could be observed in simultaneous noise measurements of the longitudinal and the Hall voltage. At $F_p$ there is a transition from plastic flow to smectic flow where the voltage noise is isotropic (Hall noise = longitudinal noise) and there is a peak in the differential resistance. At $F_t$ there is a sharp transition to a frozen transverse solid where the Hall noise falls down abruptly and vortex motion is localized in the transverse direction.
