Complete One-Loop Renormalization of the Higgs-Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian

The electroweak sector of the Standard Model can be formulated in a way similar to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT), but extended by a singlet scalar. The resulting effective field theory (EFT) is called Higgs-Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian (EWCh$\mathcal{L}$) and is the most general approach to new physics in the Higgs sector. It solely assumes the pattern of symmetry breaking leading to the three electroweak Goldstone bosons (i.e. massive $W$ and $Z$) and the existence of a Higgs-like scalar particle. The power counting of the EWCh$\mathcal{L}$ is given by a generalization of the momentum expansion of ChPT. It is connected to a loop expansion, making the theory renormalizable order by order in the EFT. I will briefly review the construction of the EWCh$\mathcal{L}$ and its power counting. Then, I will discuss the complete one-loop renormalization of the EWCh$\mathcal{L}$ employing the background-field method and the super-heat-kernel expansion. This computation confirms the power counting assumptions, is consistent with the completeness of the operator basis, and reproduces known results of subsectors in the appropriate limits.

Master formula for one-loop renormalization of bosonic SMEFT operators

Using background-field method and super-heat-kernel expansion, we derive a master formula for the one-loop UV divergences of the bosonic dimension-6 operators in Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). This approach reduces the calculation of all the UV divergences to algebraic manipulations. Using this formula we corroborate results in the literature for the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix of SMEFT obtained via diagrammatic methods, considering contributions from the operators $X^3, ϕ^6, ϕ^4 D^2, X^2 ϕ^2$ of the Warsaw basis. The formula is derived in a general way and can be applied to other quantum field theories as well.

WCxf: an exchange format for Wilson coefficients beyond the Standard Model

We define a data exchange format for numerical values of Wilson coefficients of local operators parameterising low-energy effects of physics beyond the Standard Model. The format facilitates interfacing model-specific Wilson coefficient calculators, renormalisation group (RG) runners, and observable calculators. It is designed to be unambiguous (defining a non-redundant set of operators with fixed normalisation in each basis), extensible (allowing the addition of new EFTs or bases by the user), and robust (being based on industry standard file formats with parsers implemented in many programming languages). We have implemented the format for the Standard Model EFT (SMEFT) and for the weak effective theory (WET) below the electroweak scale and have added interfaces to a number of public codes dealing with SMEFT or WET. We also provide command-line utilities and a Python module for convenient manipulation of WCxf files, including translation between different bases and matching from SMEFT to WET.

Anomalies in Bottom from new physics in Top

We analyze the possibility to accommodate current $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ anomalies with TeV-scale mediators that couple to right-handed top quarks and muons, contributing to $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-\,$ at the one-loop level. We use the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) framework but also look at specific scenarios by taking into account all possible irreducible representations of the Lorentz and Standard Model gauge group for the mediators. From a global fit of $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ data and LEP-I observables we find that the Wilson coefficients of two SMEFT operators: $\mathcal{O}_{\ell u}= (\bar \ell_{ L μ} γ^α \ell_{ L μ}) (\bar t_R γ_α t_R )$ and $\mathcal{O}_{e u}= (\bar μ_{R} γ^α μ_{R}) (\bar t_R γ_α t_R )$ need to satisfy $\mathcal{C}_{eu} \sim \mathcal{C}_{\ell u}$. New physics enters then in $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ mainly through the operator $\mathcal{O}_9 = ( \bar s γ_μ P_{L} b )( \bar \ell γ^μ \ell )$ of the Weak Effective Theory. After discussing all possible mediators, we concentrate on two scenarios: A vector boson in the irreducible representation $Z_μ^{\prime} \sim (1,1,0)$ of the Standard Model gauge group with vectorial coupling to muons, and a combination of two leptoquarks: the scalar $R_2 \sim (3,2,7/6)$ and the vector $\widetilde U_{1 μ} \sim (3,1,5/3)$. We derive LHC constraints by recasting di-muon resonance, $pp \to t \bar t t \bar t$ and SUSY searches. Additionally, we analyze the prospects for discovering these mediators during the high-luminosity phase of the LHC.

Higher order and top mass effects in Higgs boson pair production beyond the Standard Model

We discuss the interplay between NLO QCD corrections and anomalous couplings in Higgs boson pair production via gluon fusion, within the framework of a non-linearly realised Effective Field Theory, described by the electroweak chiral Lagrangian. We study how the NLO corrections with full top quark mass dependence affect the total cross sections as well as distributions in the Higgs boson pair invariant mass. For a large part of the parameter space, significant and non-homogeneous K-factors arise.

Gauge-invariant implications of the LHCb measurements on Lepton-Flavour Non-Universality

We study the implications of the recent measurements of $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ by the LHCb collaboration. We do that by adopting a model-independent approach based on the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), in which the dominant new physics effects are encoded in the coefficients of dimension-six operators respecting the full Standard Model (SM) gauge symmetry. After providing simplified expressions for $R_K$ and $R_{K^\ast}$, we determine the implications of the recent LHCb results for these observables on the coefficients of the SMEFT operators at low and high energies. We also take into account all $b\to s \ell\ell$ data, which combined lead to effective New Physics (NP) scenarios with SM pulls in excess of 5~$σ$. Thus the operators discussed in this paper would be the first dimension-six terms in the SM Lagrangian to be detected experimentally. Indirect constraints on these operators are also discussed. The results of this paper transcend the singularity of the present situation, and set a standard for future analyses in $b\to s$ transitions when the NP is assumed to lie above the electroweak scale.

Yukawa enhancement of $Z$-mediated New Physics in $ΔS = 2$ and $ΔB = 2$ Processes

We discuss Yukawa-enhanced contributions from $Z$-mediated new physics to down-type quark $ΔF=2$ processes in the framework of the standard model gauge-invariant effective theory (SMEFT). Besides the renormalization group (RG) mixing of the $Z$-mediating $ψ^2 H^2 D$ operators into $ΔF = 2$ operators, we include at the electroweak scale one-loop (NLO) matching corrections consistently, necessary for the removal of the matching scale dependence. We point out that the right-handed $Z$-mediated interactions generate through Yukawa RG mixing $ΔF=2$ left-right operators, which are further enhanced through QCD RG effects and chirally enhanced hadronic matrix elements. We investigate the impact of these new effects on the known correlations between $ΔF=2$ and $ΔF=1$ transitions in the SMEFT framework and point out qualitative differences to previous parameterizations of $Z$-mediated new physics that arise for the left-handed case. We illustrate how specific models fit into our model-independent framework by using four models with vector-like quarks. We carry out model-independent analyses of scenarios with purely left-handed and purely right-handed new-physics $Z$ couplings for each of the three sectors $s\to d$, $b\to s$ and $b\to d$. Specifically we discuss the correlations between $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon_K$, $K_L\to μ^+μ^-$ $K^+\to π^+ν\barν$ and $K_L\toπ^0ν\barν$ in the Kaon sector, and $ϕ_s$, $B_s\toμ^+μ^-$ and $B\to K^{(*)} (μ^+μ^-, ν\barν)$ in the $b\to s$ sector and $B_d\toμ^+μ^-$ in the $b\to d$ sector.

DsixTools: The Standard Model Effective Field Theory Toolkit

We present DsixTools, a Mathematica package for the handling of the dimension-six Standard Model Effective Field Theory. Among other features, DsixTools allows the user to perform the full one-loop Renormalization Group Evolution of the Wilson coefficients in the Warsaw basis. This is achieved thanks to the SMEFTrunner module, which implements the full one-loop anomalous dimension matrix previously derived in the literature. In addition, DsixTools also contains modules devoted to the matching to the $ΔB = ΔS = 1,2$ and $ΔB = ΔC = 1$ operators of the Weak Effective Theory at the electroweak scale and their QCD and QED Renormalization Group Evolution below the electroweak scale.

Scalar contributions to $b\to c (u) τν$ transitions

We perform a comprehensive analysis of scalar contributions in $b \to c τν$ transitions including the latest measurements of $R(D^{(*)})$, the $q^2$ differential distributions in $B \to D^{(*)} τν$, the $τ$ polarization asymmetry for $B \to D^{*} τν$, and the bound derived from the total width of the $B_c$ meson. We find that scalar contributions with the simultaneous presence of both left- and right-handed couplings to quarks can explain the available data, specifically $R(D^{(*)})$ together with the measured differential distributions. However, the constraints from the total $B_c$ width present a slight tension with the current data on $B \to D^{*}τν$ in this scenario, preferring smaller values for $R(D^*)$. We discuss possibilities to disentangle scalar new physics from other new-physics scenarios like the presence of only a left-handed vector current, via additional observables in $B \to D^{(*)}τν$ decays or additional decay modes like the baryonic $Λ_b \to Λ_c τν$ and the inclusive $B \to X_c τν$ decays. We also analyze scalar contributions in $b \to u τν$ transitions, including the latest measurements of $B \to τν$, providing predictions for $Λ_b \to p τν$ and $B \to πτν$ decays. The potential complementarity between the $b \to u$ and $b \to c$ sectors is finally investigated once assumptions about the flavour structure of the underlying theory are made.

Patterns of Flavour Violation in Models with Vector-Like Quarks

We study the patterns of flavour violation in renormalisable extensions of the Standard Model (SM) that contain vector-like quarks (VLQs) in a single complex representation of either the SM gauge group $G_{SM}$ or $G_{SM}' = G_{SM} \times U(1)_{L_μ- L_τ}$. We first decouple VLQs in the $M=(1-10)$ TeV range and then at the electroweak scale also $Z, Z'$ gauge bosons and additional scalars to study the resulting phenomenology that depends on the relative size of $Z$- and $Z'$-induced flavour-changing neutral currents, as well as the size of $ΔF=2$ contributions including the effects of renormalisation group Yukawa evolution from $M$ to the electroweak scale that turn out to be very important for models with right-handed currents through the generation of left-right operators. In addition to rare decays like $P\to \ell\bar\ell$, $P\to P' \ell\bar\ell$, $P\to P'ν\barν$ with $P=K, B_s, B_d$ and $ΔF=2$ observables we analyze the ratio $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ which appears in the SM to be significantly below the data. We study patterns and correlations between these observables which taken together should in the future allow for differentiating between VLQ models. In particular the patterns in models with left-handed and right-handed currents are markedly different from each other. Among the highlights are large $Z$-mediated new physics effects in Kaon observables in some of the models and significant effects in $B_{s,d}$-observables. $\varepsilon'/\varepsilon$ can easily be made consistent with the data, implying then uniquely the suppression of $K_L\to π^0 ν\barν$. Significant enhancements of $Br(K^+\to π^+ ν\barν)$ are still possible. We point out that the combination of $ΔF=2$ and $ΔF=1$ observables in a given meson system generally allows to determine the masses of VLQs independently of the size of VLQ couplings.

Dirac dark matter and $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ with $\mathrm{U(1)}$ gauge symmetry

We revisit the possibility of a Dirac fermion dark matter candidate in the light of current $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ anomalies by investigating a minimal extension of the Standard Model with a horizontal $\mathrm{U(1)}^{\prime}$ local symmetry. Dark matter stability is protected by a remnant $\mathcal{Z}_2$ symmetry arising after spontaneous symmetry breaking of $\mathrm{U(1)}^{\prime}$. The associated $Z^{\prime}$ gauge boson can accommodate current hints of new physics in $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays, and acts as a vector portal between dark matter and the visible sector. We find that the model is severely constrained by a combination of precision measurements at flavour factories, LHC searches for dilepton resonances, as well as direct and indirect dark matter searches. Despite this, viable regions of the parameter space accommodating the observed dark matter relic abundance and the $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ anomalies still persist for dark matter and $Z^{\prime}$ masses in the TeV range.

Phenomenology of an $SU(2) \times SU(2) \times U(1)$ model with lepton-flavour non-universality

We investigate a gauge extension of the Standard Model in light of the observed hints of lepton universality violation in $b \to c \ell ν$ and $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ decays at BaBar, Belle and LHCb. The model consists of an extended gauge group $\mathrm{SU(2)}_{1} \times \mathrm{SU(2)}_{2} \times \mathrm{U(1)}_Y$ which breaks spontaneously around the TeV scale to the electroweak gauge group. Fermion mixing effects with vector-like fermions give rise to potentially large new physics contributions in flavour transitions mediated by $W^{\prime}$ and $Z^{\prime}$ bosons. This model can ease tensions in $B$-physics data while satisfying stringent bounds from flavour physics, tau decays, and electroweak precision data. Possible ways to test the proposed new physics scenario with upcoming experimental measurements are discussed. Among other predictions, the lepton flavour violating ratios $R_M$, with $M = K^*, ϕ$, are found to be reduced with respect to the Standard Model expectation $R_M \simeq 1$.

Non-abelian gauge extensions for B-decay anomalies

We study the generic features of minimal gauge extensions of the Standard Model in view of recent hints of lepton-flavor non-universality in semi-leptonic $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ and $b \to c \ell ν$ decays. We classify the possible models according to the symmetry-breaking pattern and the source of flavor non-universality. We find that in viable models the $\mathrm{SU(2)}_L$ factor is embedded non-trivially in the extended gauge group, and that gauge couplings should be universal, hinting to the presence of new degrees of freedom sourcing non-universality. Finally, we provide an explicit model that can explain the $B$-decay anomalies in a coherent way and confront it with the relevant phenomenological constraints.

Stringy explanation of $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ anomalies

We show that the recent anomalies in $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ transitions observed by the LHCb collaboration can be accommodated within string motivated models with a low mass $Z^{\prime}$ gauge boson. Such $Z^{\prime}$ gauge boson can be obtained in compactifications with a low string scale. We consider a class of intersecting D-brane models, in which different families of quarks and leptons are simultaneously realized at different D-brane intersections. The explanation of $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ anomalies via a stringy $Z^{\prime}$ sets important restrictions on these viable D-brane constructions.

Family non-universal Z' models with protected flavor-changing interactions

We define a new class of $Z'$ models with neutral flavor-changing interactions at tree level in the down-quark sector. They are related in an exact way to elements of the quark mixing matrix due to an underlying flavored $U(1)'$ gauge symmetry, rendering these models particularly predictive. The same symmetry implies lepton-flavor non-universal couplings, fully determined by the gauge structure of the model. Our models allow to address presently observed deviations from the SM and specific correlations among the new physics contributions to the Wilson coefficients $C_{9,10}^{(\prime) \ell}$ can be tested in $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ transitions. We furthermore predict lepton-universality violations in $Z'$ decays, testable at the LHC.

Flavour-changing top decays in the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model

We perform a complete one-loop computation of the two-body flavour-changing top decays $t \rightarrow c h$ and $t \rightarrow c V$ ($V= γ, Z$), within the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model. We evaluate the impact of the model parameters on the associated branching ratios, taking into account constraints from flavour data and measurements of the Higgs properties. Assuming that the $125$~GeV Higgs corresponds to the lightest CP-even scalar of the CP-conserving aligned two-Higgs-doublet model, we find that the rates for such flavour-changing top decays lie below the expected sensitivity of the future high-luminosity phase of the LHC. Measurements of the Higgs signal strength in the di-photon channel are found to play an important role in limiting the size of the $t \rightarrow c h$ decay rate when the charged scalar of the model is light.

On the search for a second scalar doublet at the LHC

Motivated by the principle of natural flavour conservation, searches for signatures of a second scalar doublet at the LHC are usually limited to models with a very restricted Yukawa structure. Strong correlations between the scalar couplings to fermions are fixed in these models due to the underlying flavour principle, making the results obtained from such analyses highly model dependent. Moreover, constraints derived from flavour experiments also vary radically within the different models considered. The hypothesis of Yukawa alignment provides a suitable framework to perform a more general analysis of 125 GeV boson data and searches for additional scalars at the LHC, allowing for sizable new physics effects to be observed in the scalar sector while accommodating the stringent limits from flavour experiments at the same time. This general setting includes the different models with natural flavour conservation as particular cases.
