Extreme Events related with spatial patterns in an all-solid-state laser with saturable absorber

The passively Q-switched, self-pulsing all-solid-state laser is a device of widespread use in many applications. Depending on the condition of saturation, which is easy to adjust, different dynamical phenomena are observed: continuous wave emission, stable oscillations, period doubling bifurcations, chaos and, in some chaotic regimes, extreme events in the form of pulses of extraordinary intensity. These pulses are also sometimes called "dissipative optical rogue waves". The mechanism of their formation is still unknown. Here, we report the direct observation of the pulse-to-pulse evolution of the transverse pattern with an ultrafast camera (up to 60,000 frames per second). A specific pattern is correlated with the pulse intensity in the periodical regimes. In the chaotic regimes, the extreme events are correlated with some patterns. The series of patterns before and after an extreme event are often the same. These observations demonstrate that extreme events in this system are the consequence of the deterministic nonlinear interaction of few modes. This information plays a crucial role in the development of a theoretical model able to describe the mechanism giving raise to extreme events. The model is expected to lead to the control of their formation at will, what is of practical interest.

Eberhardt's inequality and recent loophole-free experiments

Recent experiments using innovative optical detectors and techniques have strongly increased the capacity of testing the violation of the Bell's inequalities in the Nature. Most of them have used the Eberhardt's inequality (EI) to close the "detection" loophole. Closing the "locality" loophole has been attempted by space-like separated detections and fast and random changes in the setting of the bases of observation. Also, pulsed pumping and time stamped data to close the "time-coincidence" loophole, and sophisticated statistical methods to close the "memory" loophole, have been used. In this paper, the meaning of the EI is reviewed. A simple hidden-variables theory based on a relaxation of the condition of "measurement independence", which was devised long ago for the Clauser-Horne-Shimony and Holt inequality, is adapted to the EI case. It is used here to evaluate the significance of the results of the new experiments, which are briefly described. A Table summarizes the main results.

Quantum Disentanglement Eraser: an optical implementation using three-photon spontaneous decay

The 'disentanglement eraser' or 'entanglement restorer' scheme allows retrieving entanglement by erasing the information about the formation of a classical (or separable) state. It suggests an analogy between the pairs of properties: entangled-separable and wave-particle, the latter as described in the 'quantum eraser'. The scheme illustrates the physical importance of information in quantum systems, and it is also useful as a building block for quantum computation. An optical setup for its simple implementation using three-photon decay in a centro-symmetrical crystal is proposed.
