Boundedness of single layer potentials associated to divergence form parabolic equations with complex coefficients

We consider parabolic operators of the form $$\partial_t+\mathcal{L},\ \mathcal{L}:=-\mbox{div}\, A(X,t)\nabla,$$ in $\mathbb R_+^{n+2}:=\{(X,t)=(x,x_{n+1},t)\in \mathbb R^{n}\times \mathbb R\times \mathbb R:\ x_{n+1}>0\}$, $n\geq 1$. We assume that $A$ is a $(n+1)\times (n+1)$-dimensional matrix which is bounded, measurable, uniformly elliptic and complex, and we assume, in addition, that the entries of A are independent of the spatial coordinate $x_{n+1}$ as well as of the time coordinate $t$. We prove that the boundedness of associated single layer potentials, with data in $L^2$, can be reduced to two crucial estimates, one being a square function estimate involving the single layer potential. By establishing a local parabolic Tb-theorem for square functions we are then able to verify the two crucial estimates in the case of real, symmetric operators. As part of this argument we establish a scale-invariant reverse H{ö}lder inequality for the parabolic Poisson kernel. Our results are important when addressing the solvability of the classical Dirichlet, Neumann and Regularity problems for the operator $\partial_t+\mathcal{L}$ in $\mathbb R_+^{n+2}$, with $L^2$-data on $\mathbb R^{n+1}=\partial\mathbb R_+^{n+2}$, and by way of layer potentials.

Solvability of the Dirichlet, Neumann and the regularity problems for parabolic equations with Hölder continuous coefficients

We establish the $L^2$-solvability of Dirichlet, Neumann and regularity problems for divergence-form heat (or diffusion) equations with Hölder-continuous diffusion coefficients, on bounded Lipschitz domains in $\mathbb{R}^n$. This is achieved through the demonstration of invertibility of the relevant layer-potentials which is in turn based on Fredholm theory and a new systematic approach which yields suitable parabolic Rellich-type estimates.

Discrete harmonic analysis associated with ultraspherical expansions

We study discrete harmonic analysis associated with ultraspherical orthogonal functions. We establish weighted l^p-boundedness properties of maximal operators and Littlewood-Paley g-functions defined by Poisson and heat semigroups generated by certain difference operator. We also prove weighted l^p-boundedness properties of transplantation operators associated to the system of ultraspherical functions. In order to show our results we previously establish a vector-valued local Calderón-Zygmund theorem in our discrete setting.

Bounds for partial derivatives: necessity of UMD and sharp constants

We prove the necessity of the UMD condition, with a quantitative estimate of the UMD constant, for any inequality in a family of $L^p$ bounds between different partial derivatives $\partial^βu$ of $u\in C^\infty_c(\mathbb{R}^n,X)$. In particular, we show that the estimate $\|u_{xy}\|_p\leq K(\|u_{xx}\|_p+\|u_{yy}\|_p)$ characterizes the UMD property, and the best constant $K$ is equal to one half of the UMD constant. This precise value of $K$ seems to be new even for scalar-valued functions.

Solutions of Weinstein equations representable by Bessel Poisson integrals of BMO functions

We consider the Weinstein type equation $\mathcal{L}_λu=0$ on $(0,\infty )\times (0,\infty )$, where $\mathcal{L}_λ=\partial _t^2+\partial _x^2-\frac{λ(λ-1)}{x^2}$, with $λ>1$. In this paper we characterize the solutions of $\mathcal{L}_λu=0$ on $(0,\infty )\times(0,\infty )$ representable by Bessel-Poisson integrals of BMO-functions as those ones satisfying certain Carleson properties.

Riesz-Jacobi transforms as principal value integrals

We establish an integral representation for the Riesz transforms naturally associated with classical Jacobi expansions. We prove that the Riesz-Jacobi transforms of odd orders express as principal value integrals against kernels having non-integrable singularities on the diagonal. On the other hand, we show that the Riesz-Jacobi transforms of even orders are not singular operators. In fact they are given as usual integrals against integrable kernels plus or minus, depending on the order, the identity operator. Our analysis indicates that similar results, existing in the literature and corresponding to several other settings related to classical discrete and continuous orthogonal expansions, should be reinvestigated so as to be refined and in some cases also corrected.

Conical square functions associated with Bessel, Laguerre and Schrödinger operators in UMD Banach spaces

In this paper we consider conical square functions in the Bessel, Laguerre and Schrödinger settings where the functions take values in UMD Banach spaces. Following a recent paper of Hytönen, van Neerven and Portal, in order to define our conical square functions, we use $γ$-radonifying operators. We obtain new equivalent norms in the Lebesgue-Bochner spaces $L^p((0,\infty ),\mathbb{B})$ and $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n,\mathbb{B})$, $1<p<\infty$, in terms of our square functions, provided that $\mathbb{B}$ is a UMD Banach space. Our results can be seen as Banach valued versions of known scalar results for square functions.

Riesz transforms and multipliers for the Bessel-Grushin operator

We establish that the spectral multiplier $\frak{M}(G_α)$ associated to the differential operator $$ G_α=- Δ_x +\sum_{j=1}^m{{α_j^2-1/4}\over{x_j^2}}-|x|^2 Δ_y \; \text{on} (0,\infty)^m \times \R^n,$$ which we denominate Bessel-Grushin operator, is of weak type $(1,1)$ provided that $\frak{M}$ is in a suitable local Sobolev space. In order to do this we prove a suitable weighted Plancherel estimate. Also, we study $L^p$-boundedness properties of Riesz transforms associated to $G_α$, in the case $n=1$.

On fundamental harmonic analysis operators in certain Dunkl and Bessel settings

We consider several harmonic analysis operators in the multi-dimensional context of the Dunkl Laplacian with the underlying group of reflections isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}_2^n$ (also negative values of the multiplicity function are admitted). Our investigations include maximal operators, $g$-functions, Lusin area integrals, Riesz transforms and multipliers of Laplace and Laplace-Stieltjes transform type. Using the general Calderón-Zygmund theory we prove that these objects are bounded in weighted $L^p$ spaces, $1<p<\infty$, and from $L^1$ into weak $L^{1}$.

Calderón-Zygmund operators in the Bessel setting for all possible type indices

In this paper we adapt the technique developed in [17] to show that many harmonic analysis operators in the Bessel setting, including maximal operators, Littlewood-Paley-Stein type square functions, multipliers of Laplace or Laplace-Stieltjes transform type and Riesz transforms are, or can be viewed as, Calderón-Zygmund operators for all possible values of type parameter $λ$ in this context. This extends the results obtained recently in [7], which are valid only for a restricted range of $λ$.

Square functions and spectral multipliers for Bessel operators in UMD spaces

In this paper we consider square functions (also called Littlewood-Paley g-functions) associated to Hankel convolutions acting on functions in the Bochner-Lebesgue space $L^p((0,\infty),B)$, where $B$ is a UMD Banach space. As special cases we study square functions defined by fractional derivatives of the Poisson semigroup for the Bessel operator $Δ_λ=-x^{-λ}\frac{d}{dx}x^{2λ}\frac{d}{dx}x^{-λ}$, $λ>0$. We characterize the UMD property for a Banach space $B$ by using $L^p((0,\infty),B)$-boundedness properties of g-functions defined by Bessel-Poisson semigroups. As a by product we prove that the fact that the imaginary power $Δ_λ^{iw}$, $w\in \mathbb{R}\setminus\{0\}$, of the Bessel operator $Δ_λ$ is bounded in $L^p ((0,\infty),B)$, $1<p<\infty$, characterizes the UMD property for the Banach space $B$. As applications of our results for square functions we establish the boundedness in $L^p((0,\infty),B)$ of spectral multipliers $m(Δ_λ)$ of Bessel operators defined by functions $m$ which are holomorphic in sectors $Σ_\vartheta$.

$γ$-radonifying operators and UMD-valued Littlewood-Paley-Stein functions in the Hermite setting on BMO and Hardy spaces

In this paper we study Littlewood-Paley-Stein functions associated with the Poisson semigroup for the Hermite operator on functions with values in a UMD Banach space $\B.$ If we denote by $H$ the Hilbert space $L^2((0,\infty),dt/t),γ(H,\B)$ represents the space of $γ$-radonifying operators from $H$ into $\B.$ We prove that the Hermite square function defines bounded operators from $BMO_\mathcal{L}(\R,\B)$ (respectively, $H^1_\mathcal{L}(\R, \B)$) into $BMO_\mathcal{L}(\R,γ(H,\B))$ (respectively, $H^1_\mathcal{L}(\R, γ(H,\B))$), where $BMO_\mathcal{L}$ and $H^1_\mathcal{L}$ denote $BMO$ and Hardy spaces in the Hermite setting. Also, we obtain equivalent norms in $BMO_\mathcal{L}(\R, \B)$ and $H^1_\mathcal{L}(\R,\B)$ by using Littlewood-Paley-Stein functions. As a consequence of our results, we establish new characterizations of the UMD Banach spaces.

Square functions in the Hermite setting for functions with values in UMD spaces

In this paper we characterize the Lebesgue Bochner spaces $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n,B)$, $1<p<\infty$, by using Littlewood-Paley $g$-functions in the Hermite setting, provided that $B$ is a UMD Banach space. We use $γ$-radonifying operators $γ(H,B)$ where $H=L^2((0,\infty),\frac{dt}{t})$. We also characterize the UMD Banach spaces in terms of $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n,B)$-$L^p(\mathbb{R}^n,γ(H,B))$ boundedness of Hermite Littlewood-Paley $g$-functions.

Characterization of Banach valued BMO functions and UMD Banach spaces by using Bessel convolutions

In this paper we consider the space $BMO_o(\mathbb{R},X)$ of bounded mean oscillations and odd functions on $\mathbb{R}$ taking values in a UMD Banach space $X$. The functions in $BMO_o(\mathbb{R},X)$ are characterized by Carleson type conditions involving Bessel convolutions and $γ$-radonifying norms. Also we prove that the UMD Banach spaces are the unique Banach spaces for which certain $γ$-radonifying Carleson inequalities for Bessel-Poisson integrals of $BMO_o(\mathbb{R},X)$ functions hold.

Characterization of uniformly convex and smooth Banach spaces by using Carleson measures in Bessel settings

In this paper we obtain new characterizations of the q-uniformly convex and smooth Banach spaces by using Carleson measures. These measures are defined by Poisson integral associated with Bessel operators and Banach valued BMO-functions. By the way we describe q-uniformly convexity and smoothness of a Banach space in terms of the mapping properties of the Lusin integral defined by the Poisson semigroup for Bessel operators.
