Bootstrapping gravity and its extension to metric-affine theories

In this work we study diffeomorphism-invariant metric-affine theories of gravity from the point of view of self-interacting field theories on top of Minkowski spacetime (or other background). We revise how standard metric theories couple to their own energy-momentum tensor, and discuss the generalization of these ideas when torsion and nonmetricity are also present. We review the computation of the corresponding currents through the Hilbert and canonical (Noether) prescriptions, emphasizing the potential ambiguities arising from both. We also provide the extension of this consistent self-coupling procedure to the vielbein formalism, so that fermions can be included in the matter sector. In addition, we clarify some subtle issues regarding previous discussions on the self-coupling problem for metric theories, both General Relativity and its higher derivative generalizations. We also suggest a connection between Lovelock theorem and the ambiguities in the bootstrapping procedure arising from those in the definition of conserved currents.

On the physical viability of black hole solutions in Einsteinian Cubic Gravity and its generalisations

In this note, we discuss the pathological nature of black holes in Einsteinian Cubic gravity and its extensions. We compute the equations for the odd perturbations and show how spherically symmetric solutions that asymptotically approach a maximally symmetric space (Minkowski, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter) are associated to having an asymptotically degenerate principal part of the equations. We use these results to argue that the encountered problems will be generic for any other cubic or higher-order with a reduced linear spectrum around maximally symmetric spaces except the well-known healthy case of $f(R)$. We highlight that these pathologies are only alarming when the theory is regarded as a complete theory, but not when considered as a perturbative correction to GR (as in e.g. the effective field theory framework) since the the low-energy physics remains safe from them. Our results thus cast doubts on possible resolutions of the singularities or non-perturbative effects on horizons based on these theories.

Junction conditions in bi-scalar Poincaré Gauge gravity

In this work, we study the junction conditions of the ghost-free subclass of quadratic Poincaré Gauge gravity, which propagates one scalar and one pseudo-scalar. For this purpose, we revisit the theory of distributions and junction conditions in gravity, giving a novel insight to the subject by introducing a convenient notation to deal with regular and singular parts. Then, we apply this formalism to bi-scalar Poincaré Gauge gravity and study some paradigmatic cases. We compare our results with the existing literature and the well-known predictions of General Relativity. We find that monopole spin densities are admissible, whereas both thin shells and double layers are allowed for the energy-momentum. Such layers can be avoided by setting appropriate continuity conditions on the dynamic fields of the theory, as well as on the Ricci scalar of the full connection and the Holst pseudo-scalar.

On parity-odd sector in metric-affine theories

We undertake the construction of quadratic parity-violating terms involving the curvature in the four-dimensional metric-affine gravity. We demonstrate that there are only 12 linearly independent scalars, plus an additional one that can be removed by using the Pontryagin invariant. Several convenient bases for this sector are provided in both components and differential form notation. We also particularize our general findings to some constrained geometries like Weyl-Cartan and metric-compatible connections.

Vector stability in quadratic metric-affine theories

In this work we study the stability of the four vector irreducible pieces of the torsion and the nonmetricity tensors in the general quadratic metric-affine Lagrangian in 4 dimensions. The goal will be to elucidate under which conditions the spin-1 modes associated to such vectors can propagate in a safe way, together with the graviton. This highly constrains the theory reducing the parameter space of the quadratic curvature part from 16 to 5 parameters. We also study the sub-case of Weyl-Cartan gravity, proving that the stability of the vector sector is only compatible with an Einstein-Proca theory for the Weyl vector.

Instabilities in field theories: Lecture notes with a view into modified gravity

Modified theories of gravity usually present new degrees of freedom, as well as higher order derivatives, wrong signs in certain terms and complicated couplings already present in the Lagrangian from the beginning or originated by the field redefinitions needed to reach an Einstein frame. As a consequence, they are very prone to present dynamical instabilities that could spoil any attempt to construct viable models within these frameworks. In these three lectures we introduce the most common types of instabilities that appear in field theory as well as some techniques to detect them, and supplement these contents with several examples. The goal is to understand the implications of having such pathological behaviors and the application of these notions to modified theories of gravity.

Review of gravitational wave solutions in quadratic metric-affine gravity

In this review we consider the quadratic Metric-Affine Gauge gravity Lagrangian, which contains all the algebraic invariants up to quadratic order in torsion, nonmetricity and curvature. The goal will be to collect the known exact solutions for this theory that describe the propagation of a gravitational wave and some useful properties. We concentrate on solutions whose connections are different from the Levi-Civita one and provide also the extension of already known axial torsion solutions to more general Lagrangians. At the end, we will briefly discuss colliding waves and Riemannian solutions.

Metric-Affine Gauge theories of gravity: Foundations and new insights

This thesis covers several developments performed in metric-affine gravity. This alternative framework extends General Relativity by considering a more general connection than the one induced by the metric (i.e., arbitrary torsion and nonmetricity participate in the dynamics). We start by revising some mathematical aspects of the metric-affine framework, the way Lovelock and other invariants are extended to it and the construction of a gauge formalism. Then we focus on metric-affine pp-wave geometries and explore solutions of this type for the quadratic metric-affine Lagrangian (with even-parity invariants). Finally, in the last part of the manuscript, we analyze from a more field-theoretical point of view the viability of different extensions of General Relativity by guaranteeing the stability of their degrees of freedom.

Gravitational waves in metric-affine gravity theory

We derive the exact gravitational wave solutions in a general class of quadratic metric-affine gauge gravity models. The Lagrangian includes all possible linear and quadratic invariants constructed from the torsion, nonmetricity and the curvature. The ansatz for the gravitational wave configuration and the properties of the wave solutions are patterned following the corresponding ansatz and the properties of the plane-fronted electromagnetic wave.

Inconsistencies in four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We attempt to clarify several aspects concerning the recently presented four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We argue that the limiting procedure outlined in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)] generally involves ill-defined terms in the four dimensional field equations. Potential ways to circumvent this issue are discussed, alongside some remarks regarding specific solutions of the theory. We prove that, although linear perturbations are well behaved around maximally symmetric backgrounds, the equations for second-order perturbations are ill-defined even around a Minkowskian background. Additionally, we perform a detailed analysis of the spherically symmetric solutions, and find that the central curvature singularity can be reached within a finite proper time.

New metric-affine generalizations of gravitational wave geometries

In this paper we explore generalizations of metric structures of the gravitational wave type to geometries containing an independent connection. The aim is simply to establish a new category of connections compatible, according to some criteria, to the known metric structures for gravitational waves and, additionally, provide some properties that can be useful for the search of solutions of this kind in different theories.

Geometric inequivalence of metric and Palatini formulations of General Relativity

Projective invariance is a symmetry of the Palatini version of General Relativity which is not present in the metric formulation. The fact that the Riemann tensor changes nontrivially under projective transformations implies that, unlike in the usual metric approach, in the Palatini formulation this tensor is subject to a gauge freedom, which allows some ambiguities even in its scalar contractions. In this sense, we show that for the Schwarzschild solution there exists a projective gauge in which the (affine) Kretschmann scalar, $K\equiv {R^α}_{βμν}{R_α}^{βμν}$, can be set to vanish everywhere. This puts forward that the divergence of curvature scalars may, in some cases, be avoided by a gauge transformation of the connection.

On the topological character of metric-affine Lovelock Lagrangians in critical dimensions

In this paper we prove that the $k$-th order metric-affine Lovelock Lagrangian is not a total derivative in the critical dimension $n=2k$ in the presence of non-trivial non-metricity. We use a bottom-up approach, starting with the study of the simplest cases, Einstein-Palatini in two dimensions and Gauss-Bonnet-Palatini in four dimensions, and focus then on the critical Lovelock Lagrangian of arbitrary order. The two-dimensional Einstein-Palatini case is solved completely and the most general solution is provided. For the Gauss-Bonnet case, we first give a particular configuration that violates at least one of the equations of motion and then show explicitly that the theory is not a pure boundary term. Finally, we make a similar analysis for the $k$-th order critical Lovelock Lagrangian, proving that the equation of the coframe is identically satisfied, while the one of the connection only holds for some configurations. In addition to this, we provide some families of non-trivial solutions.

General Teleparallel Quadratic Gravity

In this Letter we consider a general quadratic parity-preserving theory for a general flat connection. Imposing a local symmetry under the general linear group singles out the general teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity carrying both torsion and non-metricity. We provide a detailed discussion on the teleparallel equivalents of General Relativity and how the two known equivalents, formulated on Weitzenböck and symmetric teleparallel geometries respectively, can be interpreted as two gauge-fixed versions of the general teleparallel equivalent. We then explore the viability of the general quadratic theory by studying the spectrum around Minkowski. The linear theory generally contains two symmetric rank-2 fields plus a 2-form and, consequently, extra gauge symmetries are required to obtain potentially viable theories.
