Mitigating prior-volume effects in galaxy clustering by adopting Mpc over Mpc/h units

We investigate prior-volume effects in Bayesian analyses of galaxy clustering based on state-of-the-art models, such as the EFT and the VDG$_\infty$ model. We show that these effects are largely driven by imposing priors on the model parameters defined in ${\rm Mpc}/h$ units, thereby introducing a spurious correlation with the Hubble parameter $h$, and that they can be strongly mitigated by adopting a more physically motivated formulation in ${\rm Mpc}$ units. We test this approach using a set of synthetic data vectors designed to reproduce the clustering signal expected in a Stage-IV survey across a range of cosmological models, including $Λ$CDM, $K$CDM, $w$CDM, and $w_0w_a$CDM. We find that the resulting constraints are largely free from shifts induced during the marginalisation process, even in the challenging $w_0w_a$CDM runs, reducing discrepancies with the fiducial values from several standard deviations to well within $1σ$. The performance of this approach is comparable to that of alternative mitigation strategies, such as the adoption of invariant priors or the reparametrisation of nuisance parameters in terms of growth and geometrical amplitudes. For the latter, we find that using $σ_{12}$ in place of the commonly adopted $σ_8$ to describe the amplitude of density fluctuations improves the performance of the reparametrisation technique, even at high redshifts, where constraints on the dark-energy equation of state are weaker. We further show that these conclusions hold with the inclusion of additional BAO constraints, and for data sets with reduced statistical power. These results add to the benefits of working with ${\rm Mpc}$ units, avoiding an explicit dependence on $h$, with direct relevance for the analyses of Stage-IV galaxy surveys.

Aletheia: Emulating the non-linear matter power spectrum in the context of evolution mapping

We present Aletheia, a new emulator of the non-linear matter power spectrum, $P(k)$, built upon the evolution mapping framework. This framework addresses the limitations of traditional emulation by focusing on $h$-independent cosmological parameters, which can be separated into those defining the linear power spectrum shape ($\mathbfΘ_{\mathrm{s}}$) and those affecting only its amplitude evolution ($\mathbfΘ_{\mathrm{e}}$). The combined impact of evolution parameters and redshift is compressed into a single amplitude parameter, $σ_{12}$. Aletheia uses a two-stage Gaussian Process emulation: a primary emulator predicts the non-linear boost factor as a function of ($\mathbfΘ_{\mathrm{s}}$) and $σ_{12}$ for fixed evolution parameters, while a second one applies a small linear correction based on the integrated growth history. The emulator is trained on shape parameters spanning $\pm$5$σ$ of Planck constraints and a wide clustering range $0.2 < σ_{12} < 1.0$, providing predictions for $0.006\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1} < k < 2\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. We validate Aletheia against N-body simulations, demonstrating sub-percent accuracy. When tested on a suite of dynamic dark energy models, the full emulator's predictions show a variance of approximately 0.2%, a factor of five smaller than that of the state-of-the-art EuclidEmulator2 (around 1% variance). Furthermore, Aletheia maintains sub-percent accuracy for the best-fit dynamic dark energy cosmology from recent DESI data, a model whose parameters lie outside the training ranges of most conventional emulators. This demonstrates the power of the evolution mapping approach, providing a robust and extensible tool for precision cosmology.

Constraining the phase shift of relativistic species in DESI BAOs

In the early Universe, neutrinos decouple quickly from the primordial plasma and propagate without further interactions. The impact of free-streaming neutrinos is to create a temporal shift in the gravitational potential that impacts the acoustic waves known as baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs), resulting in a non-linear spatial shift in the Fourier-space BAO signal. In this work, we make use of and extend upon an existing methodology to measure the phase shift amplitude $β_ϕ$ and apply it to the DESI Data Release 1 (DR1) BAOs with an anisotropic BAO fitting pipeline. We validate the fitting methodology by testing the pipeline with two publicly available fitting codes applied to highly precise cubic box simulations and realistic simulations representative of the DESI DR1 data. We find further study towards the methods used in fitting the BAO signal will be necessary to ensure accurate constraints on $β_ϕ$ in future DESI data releases. Using DESI DR1, we present individual measurements of the anisotropic BAO distortion parameters and the $β_ϕ$ for the different tracers, and additionally a combined fit to $β_ϕ$ resulting in $β_ϕ = 2.7 \pm 1.7$. After including a prior on the distortion parameters from constraints using \textit{Planck} we find $β_ϕ = 2.7^{+0.60}_{-0.67} $ suggesting $β_ϕ > 0$ at 4.3$σ$ significance. This result may hint at a phase shift that is not purely sourced from the standard model expectation for $N_{\rm{eff}}$ or could be a upwards statistical fluctuation in the measured $β_ϕ$; this result relaxes in models with additional freedom beyond $Λ$CDM.
