Anisotropic Kitaev Spin Glass in Li$_{2}$Ru$_{x}$Ir$_{1-x}$O$_{3}$

Kitaev iridates have emerged as an important class of spin-orbit-entangled quantum materials in which bond-directional exchange interactions generate strong magnetic frustration and unconventional correlated states. Rather than realizing simple ordered magnets, members of the alpha,beta,gamma-Li2IrO3 family exhibit fragile and highly anisotropic magnetic behavior, including incommensurate counter-rotating order, strong field sensitivity, and pressure-driven electronic reconstruction. These phenomena place the iridates in close proximity to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) regime, while simultaneously revealing the importance of competing interactions, lattice distortions, and spin-orbit-assisted hopping processes beyond the ideal Kitaev limit. Understanding how chemical substitution perturbs these competing interactions provides a route toward probing the underlying frustrated magnetic state. Here, we study single crystals of beta-Li2RuxIr1-xO3 with dilute Ru substitution, x<~10%. Through a combination of magnetometry, resonant elastic X-ray scattering, ac-heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation/rotation, we show that weak magnetic disorder continuously suppresses the incommensurate antiferromagnetic ground state without stabilizing an alternative long-range ordered phase. Instead, the system evolves into a bulk static spin glass characterized by slow relaxation, aging behavior, and frozen local magnetic fields. Despite the loss of long-range magnetic order, the glassy state retains substantial directional anisotropy without significant distortion to the honeycomb lattice, suggesting that disorder freezes spins within a still-active bond-directional exchange environment. In this picture, dilute Ru substitution provides a controlled pathway into an anisotropic Kitaev spin glass regime that preserves essential fingerprints of the underlying Kitaev exchange network.

Antiferromagnetic order in a layered magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Se$_4$ probed by resonant soft x-ray scattering

The quasi-two-dimensional magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Se$_4$, stabilized via non-equilibrium molecular beam epitaxy, is investigated by resonant soft x-ray scattering. Kiessig fringes are observed, confirming a high sample quality and a thin film thickness of 10 septuple layers ($\sim$13 nm). An antiferromagnetic Bragg peak is observed at the structurally forbidden reflection, whose magnetic nature is validated by studying its temperature, energy, and polarization dependence. Through a detailed analysis, an A-type antiferromagetic order with in-plane moments is implied. This alternative spin structure in MnBi$_2$Se$_4$, in contrast to the Ising antiferromagnetic states in other magnetic topological insulators, might be relevant for hosting new topological states.

Spin-carrier coupling induced ferromagnetism and giant resistivity peak in EuCd$_2$P$_2$

EuCd$_2$P$_2$ is notable for its unconventional transport: upon cooling the metallic resistivity changes slope and begins to increase, ultimately 100-fold, before returning to its metallic value. Surprisingly, this giant peak occurs at 18K, well above the N\'{e}el temperature ($T_N$) of 11.5K. Using a suite of sensitive probes of magnetism, including resonant x-ray scattering and magneto-optical polarimetry, we have discovered that ferromagnetic order onsets above $T_N$ in the temperature range of the resistivity peak. The observation of inverted hysteresis in this regime shows that ferromagnetism is promoted by coupling of localized spins and itinerant carriers. The resulting carrier localization is confirmed by optical conductivity measurements.

Stabilization of three-dimensional charge order through interplanar orbital hybridization in Pr$_x$Y$_{1-x}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+\delta}$

The shape of 3$d$-orbitals often governs the electronic and magnetic properties of correlated transition metal oxides. In the superconducting cuprates, the planar confinement of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital dictates the two-dimensional nature of the unconventional superconductivity and a competing charge order. Achieving orbital-specific control of the electronic structure to allow coupling pathways across adjacent planes would enable direct assessment of the role of dimensionality in the intertwined orders. Using Cu-$L_3$ and Pr-$M_5$ resonant x-ray scattering and first-principles calculations, we report a highly correlated three-dimensional charge order in Pr-substituted YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$, where the Pr $f$-electrons create a direct orbital bridge between CuO$_2$ planes. With this, we demonstrate that interplanar orbital engineering can be used to surgically control electronic phases in correlated oxides and other layered materials.

Signatures of non-Loudon-Fleury Raman scattering in the Kitaev magnet $\beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We investigate the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $\beta$-$\text{Li}_2\text{IrO}_3$ by means of inelastic Raman scattering. The spectra exhibits a coexistence of a broad scattering continuum and two sharp low-energy peaks at 2.5 meV and 3 meV, with a distinctive polarization dependence. While the continuum is suggestive of fractional quasi-particles emerging from a proximate quantum spin liquid phase, the sharp peaks provide the first experimental signature of the `non-Loudon-Fleury' one-magnon scattering processes proposed recently [Phys. Rev. B 104, 144412 (2021)]. The corresponding microscopic mechanism is similar to the one leading to the symmetric off-diagonal exchange interaction $\Gamma$ (as it involves a combination of both direct and ligand-mediated exchange paths), but is otherwise completely unexpected within the traditional Loudon-Fleury theory of Raman scattering. The present experimental verification therefore calls for a drastic reevaluation of Raman scattering in similar systems with strong spin orbit coupling and multiple exchange paths.

Magnon-spinon dichotomy in the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb $\beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

The family of edge-sharing tri-coordinated iridates and ruthenates has emerged in recent years as a major platform for Kitaev spin liquid physics, where spins fractionalize into emergent magnetic fluxes and Majorana fermions with Dirac-like dispersions. While such exotic states are usually pre-empted by long-range magnetic order at low temperatures, signatures of Majorana fermions with long coherent times have been predicted to manifest at intermediate and higher energy scales, similar to the observation of spinons in quasi-1D spin chains. Here we present a Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering study of the magnetic excitations of the hyperhoneycomb iridate $\beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under a magnetic field with a record-high-resolution spectrometer. At low-temperatures, dispersing spin waves can be resolved around the predicted intertwined incommensurate spiral and field-induced zigzag orders, whose excitation energy reaches a maximum of 16meV. A 2T magnetic field softens the dispersion around ${\bf Q}=0$. The behavior of the spin waves under magnetic field is consistent with our semiclassical calculations for the ground state and the dynamical spin structure factor, which further predicts that the ensued intertwined uniform states remain robust up to very high fields (100 T). Most saliently, the low-energy magnon-like mode is superimposed by a broad continuum of excitations, centered around 35meV and extending up to 100meV. This high-energy continuum survives up to at least 300K -- well above the ordering temperature of 38K -- and gives evidence for pairs of long-lived Majorana fermions of the proximate Kitaev spin liquid.

Hidden spin-orbital order in the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb $\beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

We report the existence of a phase transition at high temperature in the 3D Kitaev candidate material, $\beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. We show that the transition is bulk, intrinsic and orders a tiny magnetic moment with a spatially anisotropic saturation moment. We show that even though this transition is global, it does not freeze the local Ir moments, which order at much lower temperatures into an incommensurate state. Rather, the ordered moment has an orbital origin that is coupled to spin correlations, likely of a Kitaev origin. The separate ordering of spin-correlated orbital moments and of local Ir moments reveals a novel way in which magnetic frustration in Kitaev systems can lead to coexisting magnetic states.

Evolution of charge order topology across a magnetic phase transition in cuprate superconductors

Charge order is now accepted as an integral constituent of cuprate high-temperature superconductors, one that is intimately related to other instabilities in the phase diagram including antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. Unlike nesting-induced Peierls-like density waves, the charge correlations in the CuO2 planes have been predicted to display a rich momentum space topology depending on the detailed fermiology of the system. However, to date charge order has only been observed along the high-symmetry Cu-O bond directions. Here, using resonant soft X-ray scattering, we investigate the evolution of the full momentum space topology of charge correlations in Ln2CuO4 (Ln=Nd, Pr) as a function of intrinsic electron doping. We report that, upon electron doping the parent Mott insulator, charge correlations first emerge in a hitherto-unobserved form, with full (Cinf) rotational symmetry in momentum-space. At higher doping levels, the orientation of charge correlations is sharply locked to the Cu-O bond high-symmetry directions, restoring a more conventional bidirectional charge order with enhanced correlation lengths. Through charge susceptibility calculations, we closely reproduce the drastic evolution in the topology of charge correlations across an antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition, highlighting the interplay between spin and charge degrees of freedom in electron-doped cuprates. Finally, using the established link between charge correlations and the underlying fermiology, we propose a revised phase diagram of Ln2CuO4 with a superconducting region extending toward the Mott limit.

Persistent low-energy phonon broadening near the charge order $q$-vector in bilayer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$

We report a persistent low-energy phonon broadening around $q_{B} \sim 0.28$ r.l.u. along the Cu-O bond direction in the high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ (Bi-2212). We show that such broadening exists both inside and outside the conventional charge density wave (CDW) phase, via temperature dependent measurements in both underdoped and heavily overdoped samples. Combining inelastic hard x-ray scattering, diffuse scattering, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and resonant soft x-ray scattering at the Cu $L_3$-edge, we exclude the presence of a CDW in the heavily overdoped Bi-2212 similar to that observed in the underdoped systems. Finally, we discuss the origin of such anisotropic low-energy phonon broadening, and its potential precursory role to the CDW phase in the underdoped region.

Field-induced intertwined orders in 3D Mott-Kitaev honeycomb $\beta$-Li2IrO3

Honeycomb iridates are thought to have strongly spin-anisotropic exchange interactions that could lead to an extraordinary state of matter known as the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. The realization of this state requires almost perfectly frustrated interactions between the magnetic Ir$^{4+}$ ions, but small imbalances in energy make other ordered states more favorable. Indeed, the closeness in energy of these ordered states is itself a signature of the intrinsic frustration in the system. In this work, we illustrate that small magnetic fields can be employed to drive the frustrated quantum magnet $\beta-$Li$_2$IrO$_3$,between different broken symmetry states, but without causing a true thermodynamic phase transition. This field-induced broken symmetry phase has all the signatures of a thermodynamic order parameter, but it is never truly formed in zero field. Rather, it is summoned when the scales of frustration are appropriately tipped, intertwined with other nearby quantum states.

Resonant x-ray scattering reveals possible disappearance of magnetic order under hydrostatic pressure in the Kitaev candidate $\gamma$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

Honeycomb iridates such as $\gamma$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ are argued to realize Kitaev spin-anisotropic magnetic exchange, along with Heisenberg and possibly other couplings. While systems with pure Kitaev interactions are candidates to realize a quantum spin liquid ground state, in $\gamma$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ it has been shown that the balance of magnetic interactions leads to the incommensurate spiral spin order at ambient pressure below 38 K. We study the fragility of this state in single crystals of $\gamma$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ using resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) under applied hydrostatic pressures of up to 3.0 GPa. RXS is a direct probe of the underlying electronic order, and we observe the abrupt disappearance of the $q$=(0.57, 0, 0) spiral order at a critical pressure $P_c = 1.5\ $GPa with no accompanying change in the symmetry of the lattice. This dramatic disappearance is in stark contrast with recent studies of $\beta$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ that show continuous suppression of the spiral order in magnetic field; under pressure, a new and possibly nonmagnetic ground state emerges.
