Mathematical Features of Several Cosmological Models

Einstein equations for several matter sources in homogeneous, isotropic metric are shown to reduce to a second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation. An analysis of its solutions is made in an important case.

Evolution of a universe filled with a causal viscous fluid

The behaviour of solutions to the Einstein equations with a causal viscous fluid source is investigated. In this model we consider a spatially flat Robertson-Walker metric, the bulk viscosity coefficient is related to the energy density as $ζ= αρ^{m}$, and the relaxation time is given by $ζ/ρ$. In the case $m = 1/2$ we find the exact solutions and we verify whether they satisfy the energy conditions. Besides, we study analytically the asymptotic stability of several families of solutions for arbitrary $m$. We find that the qualitative asymptotic behaviour in the far future is not altered by relaxation processes, but they change the behaviour in the past, introducing singular instead of deflationary evolutions or making the Universe bounce due to the violation of the energy conditions.

Exact self-interacting scalar field cosmologies

We solve isotropic, homogeneous cosmological models containing a self-interacting scalar field. Calculations are performed in four and two-dimensional spacetimes. We find several exact solutions that have an inflationary regime or has a final Friedmann stage. Also their asymptotically stability is studied.

The branching problem in generalized power solutions to differential equations

Generalized power asymptotic expansions of solutions to differential equations that depend on parameters are investigated. The changing nature of these expansions as the parameters of the model cross critical values is discussed. An algorithm to identify these critical values and generate the generalized power series for distinct families of solutions is presented, and as an application the singular behavior of a cosmological model with a nonlinear dissipative fluid is obtained. This algorithm has been implemented in the computer algebra system Maple.

An exact model of conformal quintessence

A non--minimally coupled quintessence model is investigated and the conditions for a stationary solution to the coincidence problem are obtained. For a conformally coupled scalar field and dissipative matter, a general solution possessing late acceleration is found. It fits rather well the high redshift supernovae data and gives a good prediction of the age of the Universe. Likewise, the cold dark matter component dominates the cosmological perturbations at late times albeit they decrease with expansion.

Dark energy, dissipation and the coincidence problem

In a recent paper we showed that a quintessence scalar field plus a dissipative matter fluid can drive late cosmic accelerated expansion and simultaneously solve the coincidence problem [1]. In this brief report we extend this result to the cases when the scalar field is replaced either by a Chaplygin gas or a tachyonic fluid.

Interacting quintessence solution to the coincidence problem

We show that a suitable interaction between a scalar field and a matter fluid in a spatially homogeneous and isotropic spacetime can drive the transition from a matter dominated era to an accelerated expansion phase and simultaneously solve the coincidence problem of our present Universe. For this purpose we study the evolution of the energy density ratio of these two components. We demonstrate that a stationary attractor solution is compatible with an accelerated expansion of the Universe. We extend this study to account for dissipation effects due to interactions in the dark matter fluid. Finally, Type Ia supernovae and primordial nucleosynthesis data are used to constrain the parameters of the model.

Symmetries leading to inflation

We present here the general transformation that leaves unchanged the form of the field equations for perfect fluid Friedmann--Robertson--Walker and Bianchi V cosmologies. The symmetries found can be used as algorithms for generating new cosmological models from existing ones. A particular case of the general transformation is used to illustrate the crucial role played by the number of scalar fields in the occurrence of inflation. Related to this, we also study the existence and stability of Bianchi V power law solutions.

Dark energy and dissipation

Most of the models leading to a current state of cosmic accelerated expansion fail to address the coincidence problem, i.e., that the dark energy density and the energy density of the matter fluid are of the same order precisely today. We show that a way to drive late acceleration and simultaneously solve the aforesaid problem is assuming the matter fluid dissipative[1].

Synergistic warm inflation

We consider an alternative warm inflationary scenario in which $n$ scalar fields coupled to a dissipative matter fluid cooperate to produce power--law inflation. The scalar fields are driven by an exponential potential and the bulk dissipative pressure coefficient is linear in the expansion rate. We find that the entropy of the fluid attains its asymptotic value in a characteristic time proportional to the square of the number of fields. This scenario remains nearly isothermal along the inflationary stage. The perturbations in energy density and entropy are studied in the long--wavelength regime and seen to grow roughly as the square of the scale factor. They are shown to be compatible with COBE measurements of the fluctuations in temperature of the CMB.

Quintessence dissipative superattractor cosmology

We investigate the simplest quintessence dissipative dark matter attractor cosmology characterized by a constant quintessence baryotropic index and a power--law expansion. We show a class of accelerated coincidence--solving attractor solutions converging to this asymptotic behavior. Despite its simplicity, such a ``superattractor'' regime provides a model of the recent universe that also exhibits an excellent fit to supernovae luminosity observations and no age conflict. Our best fit gives $α=1.71\pm 0.29$ for the power-law exponent. We calculate for this regime the evolution of density and entropy perturbations.

Quintessence Energy and Dissipation

The combined effect of a dissipative fluid and quintessence energy can simultaneously drive an accelerated expansion phase at the present time and solve the coincidence problem of our current Universe. A solution compatible with the observed cosmic acceleration is succinctly presented.

Enlarged quintessence cosmology

We show that the combination of a fluid with a bulk dissipative pressure and quintessence matter can simultaneously drive an accelerated expansion phase and solve the coincidence problem of our current Universe. We then study some scenarios compatible with the observed cosmic acceleration.

Perfect fluid cosmologies with varying light speed

We have found exact constant solutions for the cosmological density parameter using a generalization of general relativity that incorporates a cosmic time-variation of the velocity of light in vacuum and the Newtonian gravitation constant. We have determined the conditions when these solutions are attractors for an expanding universe and solved the problems of the Standard Big Bang model for perfect fluids.

Stable Inflationary Dissipative Cosmologies

The stability of the de Sitter era of cosmic expansion in spatially curved homogeneous isotropic universes is studied. The source of the gravitational field is an imperfect fluid such that the parameters that characterize it may change with time. In this way we extend our previous analysis for spatially-flat spaces as well as the work of Barrow.

Quintessence inhomogeneous cosmology

The Einstein-Klein-Gordon field equations are solved in a inhomogeneous shear-free universe containing a material fluid, a self-interacting scalar field, a variable cosmological term, and a heat flux. A quintessence-dominated scenario arises with a power-law accelerated expansion compatible with the currently observed homogeneous universe.

Inhomogeneous cosmologies with Q-matter and varying $Λ$

Starting from the inhomogeneous shear--free Nariai metric we show, by solving the Einstein--Klein--Gordon field equations, how a self--interacting scalar field plus a material fluid, a variable cosmological term and a heat flux can drive the universe to its currently observed state of homogeneous accelerated expansion. A quintessence scenario where power-law inflation takes place for a string-motivated potential in the late--time dominated field regime is proposed.
