Diffusion and Relaxation Controlled by Tempered α-stable Processes

We derive general properties of anomalous diffusion and nonexponential relaxation from the theory of tempered α-stable processes. Its most important application is to overcome the infinite-moment difficulty for the α-stable random operational time τ. The tempering results in the existence of all moments of τ. The subordination by the inverse tempered α-stable process provides diffusion(relaxation) that occupies an intermediate place between subdiffusion (Cole-Cole law) and normal diffusion (exponential law). Here we obtain explicitly the Fokker-Planck equation, the mean square displacement and the relaxation function. This model includes subdiffusion as a particular case.

Anomalous diffusion. A competition between the very large jumps in physical and operational times

In this paper we analyze a coupling between the very large jumps in physical and operational times as applied to anomalous diffusion. The approach is based on subordination of a skewed Levy-stable process by its inverse to get two types of operational time - the spent and the residual waiting time, respectively. The studied processes have different properties which display both subdiffusive and superdiffusive features of anomalous diffusion underlying the two-power-law relaxation patterns.

Experimental Evidence of the Role of Compound Counting Processes in Random Walk Approaches to Fractional Dynamics

We present dielectric spectroscopy data obtained for gallium-doped Cd$_{0.99}$Mn$_{0.01}$Te:Ga mixed crystals which exhibit a very special case of the two-power-law relaxation pattern with the high-frequency power-law exponent equal to 1. We explain this behavior, which cannot be fitted by none of the well-known empirical relaxation functions, in a subordinated diffusive framework. We propose diffusion scenario based on a renormalized clustering of random number of spatio-temporal steps in the continuous time random walk. Such a construction substitutes the renewal counting process, used in the classical continuous time random walk methodology, by a compound counting one. As a result, we obtain a novel relaxation function governing the observed non-standard pattern, and we show the importance of the compound counting processes in studying fractional dynamics of complex systems.

Beam propagation in a Randomly Inhomogeneous Medium

An integro-differential equation describing the angular distribution of beams is analyzed for a medium with random inhomogeneities. Beams are trapped because inhomogeneities give rise to wave localization at random locations and random times. The expressions obtained for the mean square deviation from the initial direction of beam propagation generalize the "3/2 law".

Hamiltonian formalism of fractional systems

In this paper we consider a generalized classical mechanics with fractional derivatives. The generalization is based on the time-clock randomization of momenta and coordinates taken from the conventional phase space. The fractional equations of motion are derived using the Hamiltonian formalism. The approach is illustrated with a simple-fractional oscillator in a free state and under an external force. Besides the behavior of the coupled fractional oscillators is analyzed. The natural extension of this approach to continuous systems is stated. The interpretation of the mechanics is discussed.

Subordination model of anomalous diffusion leading to the two-power-law relaxation responses

We derive a general pattern of the nonexponential, two-power-law relaxation from the compound subordination theory of random processes applied to anomalous diffusion. The subordination approach is based on a coupling between the very large jumps in physical and operational times. It allows one to govern a scaling for small and large times independently. Here we obtain explicitly the relaxation function, the kinetic equation and the susceptibility expression applicable to the range of experimentally observed power-law exponents which cannot be interpreted by means of the commonly known Havriliak-Negami fitting function. We present a novel two-power relaxation law for this range in a convenient frequency-domain form and show its relationship to the Havriliak-Negami one.
