Factoriality and birational rigidity of two families of singular quartic three-folds

In this paper we study two families of three-dimensional quartics in the complex projective space ${\mathbb P}^4$: hypersurfaces with a unique quadratic singularity of rank 3, which is resolved by two blowups, and hypersurfaces with two quadratic singularities of rank 3 and 4, respectively. Both families have codimension 3 in the natural parameter space. For a Zariski general quartic in each of these families we prove factoriality and birational rigidity and describe its group of birational self-maps.

Birational rigidity of quartic three-folds with a double point of rank 3

We prove that a general three-dimensional quartic $V$ in the complex projective space ${\mathbb P}^4$, the only singularity of which is a double point of rank 3, is a birationally rigid variety. Its group of birational self-maps is, up to the finite subgroup of biregular automorphisms, a free product of 25 cyclic groups of order 2. It follows that the complement to the set of birationally rigid factorial quartics with terminal singularities is of codimension at least 3 in the natural parameter space.

Birationally rigid hypersurfaces with quadratic singularities of low rank

It is shown that hypersurfaces of degree $M$ in ${\mathbb P}^M$, $M\geqslant 5$, with at most quadratic singularities of rank at least 3, satisfying certain conditions of general position, are birationally superrigid Fano varieties and the complement to the set of such hypersurfaces is for $M\geqslant 8$ of codimension at least ${M-1 \choose 2} + 1$ with respect to the natural parameter space.

Rationally connected Galois covers of Fano-Mori fibre spaces

For Fano-Mori fibre spaces $π\colon V\to S$, every fibre of which is a primitive Fano variety with the global canonical threshold at least 1, and which are stable with respect to birational modifications of the base and sufficiently twisted over the base, we prove that every rationally connected Galois cyclic rational cover is pulled back from the base; in particular, if $S$ does not have such covers then $V$ does not have rationally connected Galois rational covers, the Galois group of which is not perfect.

Birationally rigid Fano-Mori fibre spaces

In this paper we prove the birational rigidity of Fano-Mori fibre spaces $π\colon V\to S$, every fibre of which is a Fano complete intersection of index 1 and codimension $k\geqslant 3$ in the projective space ${\mathbb P}^{M+k}$ for $M$ sufficiently high, satisfying certain natural conditions of general position, in the assumption that the fibre space $V/S$ is sufficiently twisted over the base. The dimension of the base $S$ is bounded from above by a constant, depending only on the dimension $M$ of the fibre (as the dimension of the fibre $M$ grows, this constant grows as $\frac12 M^2$).

Birational geometry of varieties, fibred into complete intersections of codimension two

In this paper we prove the birational superrigidity of Fano-Mori fibre spaces $π\colon V\to S$, every fibre of which is a complete intersection of type $d_1\cdot d_2$ in the projective space ${\mathbb P}^{d_1+d_2}$, satisfying certain conditions of general position, under the assumption that the fibration $V/S$ is sufficiently twisted over the base (in particular, under the assumption that the $K$-condition holds). The condition of general position for every fibre guarantees that the global log canonical threshold is equal to one. This condition bounds the dimension of the base $S$ by a constant that depends on the dimension $M$ of the fibre only (as the dimension $M$ of the fibre grows, this constant grows as $\frac12 M^2$). The fibres and the variety $V$ itself may have quadratic and bi-quadratic singularities, the rank of which is bounded from below.

Remarks on Galois rational covers

In this note we improve the theorem on Galois rational covers $X\dashrightarrow V$ for primitive Fano varieties $V$, recently proven by the author, in the two directions: we extend to the maximum the class of Galois groups $G$, for which the proof works, and relax the conditions that must be satisfied by the variety $V$ -- the divisorial canonicity alone is sufficient.

Rationally connected rational double covers of primitive Fano varieties

We show that for a Zariski general hypersurface $V$ of degree $M+1$ in ${\mathbb P}^{M+1}$ for $M\geqslant 5$ there are no Galois rational covers $X\dashrightarrow V$ of degree $d\geqslant 2$ with an abelian Galois group, where $X$ is a rationally connected variety. In particular, there are no rational maps $X\dashrightarrow V$ of degree 2 with $X$ rationally connected. This fact is true for many other families of primitive Fano varieties as well and motivates a conjecture on absolute rigidity of primitive Fano varieties.

Birational geometry of singular Fano double spaces of index two

In this paper we describe the birational geometry of Fano double spaces $V\stackrelσ{\to}{\mathbb P}^{M+1}$ of index 2 and dimension $\geqslant 8$ with at mostquadratic singularities of rank $\geqslant 8$, satisfying certain additional conditions of general position: we prove that these varieties have no structures of a rationally connected fibre space over a base of dimension $\geqslant 2$, that every birational map $χ\colon V\dashrightarrow V'$ onto the total space of a Mori fibre space $V'/{\mathbb P}^1$ induces an isomorphism $V^+\cong V'$ of the blow up $V^+$ of the variety $V$ along $σ^{-1}(P)$, where $P\subset {\mathbb P}^{M+1}$ is a linear subspace of codimension 2, and that every birational map of the variety $V$ onto a Fano variety $V'$ with ${\mathbb Q}$-factorial terminal singularities and Picard number 1 is an isomorphism. We give an explicit lower estimate for the codimension of the set of varieties $V$ with worse singularities or not satisfying the conditions of general position, quadratic in $M$. The proof makes use of the method of maximal singularities and the improved $4n^2$-inequality for the self-intersection of a mobile linear system.

Canonical and log canonical thresholds of multiple projective spaces

In this paper we show that the global (log) canonical threshold of $d$-sheeted covers of the $M$-dimensional projective space of index 1, where $d\geqslant 4$, is equal to one for almost all families (except for a finite set). The varieties are assumed to have at most quadratic singularities, the rank of which is bounded from below, and to satisfy the regularity conditions. This implies birational rigidity of new large classes of Fano-Mori fibre spaces over a base, the dimension of which is bounded from above by a constant that depends (quadratically) on the dimension of the fibre only.

Birationally rigid finite covers of the projective space

In this paper we prove birational superrigidity of finite covers of degree $d$ of the $M$-dimensional projective space of index 1, where $d\geqslant 5$ and $M\geqslant 10$, with at most quadratic singularities of rank $\geqslant 7$, satisfying certain regularity conditions. Up to now, only cyclic covers were studied in this respect. The set of varieties with worse singularities or not satisfying the regularity conditions is of codimension $\geqslant\frac12(M-4)(M-5)+1$ in the natural parameter space of the family.

Birational geometry of singular Fano hypersurfaces of index two

For a Zariski general (regular) hypersurface $V$ of degree $M$ in the $(M+1)$-dimensional projective space, where $M$ is at least 16, with at most quadratic singularities of rank at least 13, we give a complete description of the structures of rationally connected (or Fano-Mori) fibre space: every such structure over a positive-dimensional base is a pencil of hyperplane sections. This implies, in particular, that $V$ is non-rational and its groups of birational and biregular automorphisms coincide. The set of non-regular hypersurfaces has codimension at least $\frac12(M-11)(M-10)-10$ in the natural parameter space.

Birational geometry of algebraic varieties, fibred into Fano double spaces

We develop the quadratic technique of proving birational rigidity of Fano-Mori fibre spaces over a higher-dimensional base. As an application, we prove birational rigidity of generic fibrations into Fano double spaces of dimension $M\geqslant 4$ and index one over a rationally connected base of dimension at most $\frac12 (M-2)(M-1)$. An estimate for the codimension of the subset of hypersurfaces of a given degree in the projective space with a positive-dimensional singular set is obtained, which is close to the optimal one.

Birationally rigid complete intersections with a singular point of high multiplicity

We prove the birational rigidity of Fano complete intersections of index 1 with a singular point of high multiplicity, which can be close to the degree of the variety. In particular, the groups of birational and biregular automorphisms of these varieties are equal, and they are non-rational. The proof is based on the techniques of the method of maximal singularities, the generalized $4n^2$-inequality for complete intersection singularities and the technique of hypertangent divisors.

Canonical and log canonical thresholds of Fano complete intersections

It is proved that the global log canonical threshold of a Zariski general Fano complete intersection of index 1 and codimension $k$ in ${\mathbb P}^{M+k}$ is equal to one, if $M\geqslant 2k+3$ and the maximum of the degrees of defining equations is at least 8. This is an essential improvements of the previous results about log canonical thresholds of Fano complete intersections. As a corollary we obtain the existence of K\" ahler-Einstein metrics on generic Fano complete intersections described above.

Automorphisms of certain affine complements in the projective space

We prove that every biregular automorphism of the affine algebraic variety ${\mathbb P}^M\setminus S$, $M\geqslant 3$, where $S\subset {\mathbb P}^M$ is a hypersurface of degree $m\geqslant M+1$ with a unique singular point of multiplicity $(m-1)$, resolved by one blow up, is a restriction of some automorphism of the projective space ${\mathbb P}^M$, preserving the hypersurface $S$; in particular, for a general hypersurface $S$ the group $\mathop{\rm Aut} ({\mathbb P}^M\setminus S)$ is trivial.

The $4n^2$-inequality for complete intersection singularities

The famous $4n^2$-inequality is extended to generic complete intersection singularities: it is shown that the multiplicity of the self-intersection of a mobile linear system with a maximal singularity is higher than $4n^2μ$, where $μ$ is the multiplicity of the singular point.
