Driven dynamics of an attractive Bose polaron

We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of an impurity driven by a constant external force through a system of homogeneous weakly-interacting bosons in one spatial dimension. The impurity-boson interaction is assumed to be attractive. We show that the impurity exhibits drifted Bloch oscillations in a wide range of forces in the absence of a lattice. We characterize the dynamical response of the host bosons and explain the mechanism underlying the Bloch oscillations. We analyse the behavior of the drift velocity, the Bloch amplitude and the time period of oscillations in a wide range of forces and other system parameters. In contrast to the case of repulsive impurity-boson interaction, the drift velocity exhibits a sub-linear dependence on a weak applied force, $V_d\sim {F}^α$ with a positive exponent $α$ smaller than unity. The drift velocity monotonically increases with force, though the scaling behavior varies considerably across different regimes of $F$. Moreover, the amplitude of the velocity oscillations displays rich behavior: it first undergoes a decay with force, reaches a minimum, and then presents a revival, increasing with force.

Long-lived oscillations of an attractive polaron in a Bose gas

We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of an attractively interacting impurity suddenly immersed with a nonzero initial velocity into a system of one-dimensional weakly interacting homogeneous bosons. We uncover and characterize different dynamical regimes in the parameter space. Especially interesting is the relaxation of a fast impurity with a mass close to or exceeding the critical one, where the impurity exhibits undamped temporal long-lived velocity oscillations before reaching a stationary state. The underlying mechanism is the transient localization of a boson depletion cloud near the impurity, that oscillates around the boson density peak situated at the impurity position. The lifetime of this oscillating state increases with the absolute value of the impurity-boson coupling. Cold atomic gases provide an ideal playground where this phenomenon can be probed.

Bethe-ansatz study of the Bose-Fermi mixture

We consider a one-dimensional mixture of bosons and spinless fermions with contact interactions. In this system, the elementary excitations at low energies are described by four linearly dispersing modes characterized by two excitation velocities. Here we study the velocities in a system with equal interaction strengths and equal masses of bosons and fermions. The resulting model is integrable and admits an exact Bethe-ansatz solution. We analyze it and analytically derive various exact results, which include the Drude weight matrix. We show that the excitation velocities can be calculated from the knowledge of the matrices of compressibility and the Drude weights, as their squares are the eigenvalues of the product of the two matrices. The elements of the Drude weight matrix obey certain sum rules as a consequence of Galilean invariance. Our results are consistent with the presence of a momentum-momentum coupling term between the two subsystems of bosons and fermions in the effective low-energy Hamiltonian. The analytical method developed in the present study can be extended to other models that possess a nested Bethe-ansatz structure.

Bloch oscillations of a mobile impurity in a one-dimensional Bose gas

We study the motion of an impurity under the action of a constant force through a one-dimensional system of weakly-interacting bosons. The interplay of the impurity-boson interaction, the boson-boson interaction, and the driving force gives rise to a rich dynamics. We focus on the influence of a finite external force. Under these far-from-equilibrium conditions, we show that in a wide range of forces, one part of the momentum transferred to the system is periodically channeled into the Bose gas through the emission of dispersive density shock waves, solitons, density waves and the creation of additional phase gradients. As a result, the impurity velocity does not increase indefinitely, but periodically oscillates in time around the drift velocity. We uncover and characterize different dynamical regimes in a wide range of the impurity-boson coupling, the impurity mass and the external force. At a sufficiently large force, the Bloch oscillations cease and the impurity exhibits an unlimited acceleration.

Relaxation dynamics of a mobile impurity injected into a one-dimensional Bose gas

The nonequilibrium dynamics of an impurity immersed with a finite velocity into a one-dimensional system of weakly interacting bosons is studied within the framework of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We uncover and characterize different regimes of relaxation dynamics. We find that the final impurity velocity remains constant in a large interval of sufficiently big and realistic initial velocities. The underlying physical mechanism is the emission of the dispersive density shock waves that carry away the excess of the initial impurity momentum, while locally the system remains in the same stationary state. In contrast, a heavy impurity with the same coupling constant relaxes differently and the regime of constant final velocity disappears. Furthermore, a fast heavy impurity exhibits damped velocity oscillations in time before reaching a stationary state. This process is accompanied by the oscillations of the local depletion of the boson density around the impurity, until their positions coincide and they continue the motion together. Decreasing the impurity-boson coupling or increasing the strength of repulsion between bosons, the oscillations get amplified. In the case of a heavy impurity with the mass bigger than the critical one, the ground state energy as a function of momentum exhibits cusps and metastable branches. We show that they manifest themselves by a soliton emission, a considerable slowing down of the relaxation, and a change of the impurity direction of motion with respect to the initial one.

Dissipative dynamics of a heavy impurity in a Bose gas in the strong coupling regime

We study the motion of a heavy impurity in a one-dimensional Bose gas. The impurity experiences the friction force due to scattering off thermally excited quasiparticles. We present detailed analysis of an arbitrarily strong impurity-boson coupling in a wide range of temperatures within a microscopic theory. Focusing mostly on weakly interacting bosons, we derive an analytical result for the friction force and uncover new regimes of the impurity dynamics. Particularly interesting is the low-temperature $T^2$ dependence of the friction force obtained for a strongly coupled impurity, which should be contrasted with the expected $T^4$ scaling. This new regime applies to systems of bosons with an arbitrary repulsion strength. We finally study the evolution of the impurity with a given initial momentum. We evaluate analytically its non-stationary momentum distribution function. The impurity relaxation towards the equilibrium is a realization of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process in momentum space.

Local spectral density of an interacting one-dimensional Bose gas with an impurity

A weakly interacting Bose gas with a single static impurity is studied in one dimension. The local spectral density is evaluated and an analytic expression valid for positive strengths of the impurity coupling to the bosons, at all distances and at all frequencies is obtained using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approximation.

Spectrum of elementary excitations in Galilean-invariant integrable models

The spectrum of elementary excitations in one-dimensional quantum liquids is generically linear at low momenta. It is characterized by the sound velocity that can be related to the ground state energy. Here we study the spectrum at higher momenta in Galilean invariant integrable models. Somewhat surprisingly, we show that the spectrum at arbitrary momentum is fully determined by the properties of the ground state. We find general exact relations for the coefficients of several terms in the expansion of the excitation energy at low momenta and arbitrary interaction and express them in terms of the Luttinger liquid parameter. We apply the obtained formulas to the Lieb-Liniger model and obtain several new results.

Dynamics of a Mobile Impurity in a One-Dimensional Bose Liquid

We develop a microscopic theory of a quantum impurity propagating in a one-dimensional Bose liquid. As a result of scattering off thermally excited quasiparticles, the impurity experiences the friction. We find that, at low temperatures, the resulting force scales either as the fourth or the eighth power of temperature, depending on the system parameters. For temperatures higher than the chemical potential of the Bose liquid, the friction force is a linear function of temperature. Our approach enables us to find the friction force in the crossover region between the two limiting cases. In the integrable case, corresponding to the Yang-Gaudin model, the impurity becomes transparent for quasiparticles and thus the friction force is absent. Our results could be further generalized to study other kinetic phenomena.

Fluctuation-induced noise in out-of-equilibrium disordered superconducting films

We study out-of-equilibrium transport in disordered superconductors close to the superconducting transition. We consider a thin film connected by resistive tunnel interfaces to thermal reservoirs having different chemical potentials and temperatures. The nonequilibrium longitudinal current-current correlation function is calculated within the nonlinear sigma model description and nonlinear dependence on temperatures and chemical potentials is obtained. Different contributions are calculated, originating from the fluctuation-induced suppression of the quasiparticle density of states, Maki- Thompson and Aslamazov-Larkin processes. As a special case of our results, close-to-equilibrium we obtain the longitudinal ac conductivity using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem.

Pairing Fluctuation AC Conductivity of Disordered Thin Films

We study temperature $T$ and frequency $ω$ dependence of the in-plane fluctuation conductivity of a disordered superconducting film above the critical temperature. Our calculation is based on the nonlinear sigma model within the Keldysh technique. The fluctuation contributions of different physical origin are found and analyzed in a wide frequency range. In the low-frequency range, $ω\ll T$, we reproduce the known leading terms and find additional subleading ones in the Aslamazov-Larkin and the Maki-Thompson contributions to the ac conductivity. We also calculate the density of states ac correction. In the dc case these contributions logarithmically depend on the Ginzburg-Landau rate and are considerably smaller that the leading ones. However, in the ac case an external finite-frequency electromagnetic field strongly suppresses the known Alsamazov-Larkin and Maki-Thompson ac contributions, while the corresponding new terms and the density of states contribution are weakly suppressed and therefore become relevant at finite frequencies.
