Graded Betti numbers of graded Möbius algebras of uniform matroids

Graded Möbius algebras were a key tool in the proof of the Dowling-Wilson Top Heavy Conjecture. They are commutative algebras whose Hilbert functions recover the Whitney numbers of the second kind, i.e. the number of flats of a given rank. The graded Betti numbers of the defining ideal of a graded Möbius algebra refine the Hilbert function and describe its minimal free resolution. In this paper we derive precise formulas for the graded Betti numbers of the defining ideals of graded Möbius algebra for any uniform matroid. We also study when the graded Möbius algebra of an arbitrary matroid is linearly presented.

Homological properties of rings defined by $n+1$ general quadrics in $n$ variables

We study the almost complete intersection ring $R$ defined by $n+1$ general quadrics in a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $\sf{k}$ and a corresponding linked Gorenstein ring $A$. The overarching theme is that, while not Koszul (except for some small values of $n$), these rings have homological properties that extend those of Koszul rings. We establish that finitely generated modules over these rings have rational Poincaré series and we give concrete formulas for the Poincaré series of $\sf{k}$ over both $A$ and $R$. We also show that $A$ has minimal rate and its Yoneda algebra $\text{Ext}_A(\sf{k},\sf{k})$ is generated by its elements of degrees $1$ and $2$. While the graded Betti numbers of $R$ and $A$ over the polynomial ring are not known when $n$ is odd, our approach provides bounds and yields values for two of these Betti numbers, showing in particular that $R$ is level.

A study of a quadratic almost complete intersection ideal and its linked Gorenstein ideal

We examine the ideal $I=(x_1^2, \dots, x_n^2, (x_1+\dots+x_n)^2)$ in the polynomial ring $Q=k[x_1, \dots, x_n]$, where $k$ is a field of characteristic zero or greater than $n$. We also study the Gorenstein ideal $G$ linked to $I$ via the complete intersection ideal $(x_1^2, \dots, x_n^2)$. We compute the Betti numbers of $I$ and $G$ over $Q$ when $n$ is odd and extend known computations when $n$ is even. A consequence is that the socle of $Q/I$ is generated in a single degree (thus $Q/I$ is level) and its dimension is a Catalan number. We also describe the generators and the initial ideal with respect to reverse lexicographic order for the Gorenstein ideal $G$.

Rational Normal Curves in Weighted Projective Space

This article aims to extend classical homological results about the rational normal curves to analogues in weighted projective spaces. Results include determinantality and nonstandard versions of quadratic generation and the Koszul property.

Minimal free resolutions of numerical semigroup algebras via Apéry specialization

Numerical semigroups with multiplicity $m$ are parameterized by integer points in a polyhedral cone $C_m$, according to Kunz. For the toric ideal of any such semigroup, the main result here constructs a free resolution whose overall structure is identical for all semigroups parametrized by the relative interior of a fixed face of $C_m$. The matrix entries of this resolution are monomials whose exponents are parametrized by the coordinates of the corresponding point in $C_m$, and minimality of the resolution is achieved when the semigroup is maximal embedding dimension, which is the case parametrized by the interior of $C_m$ itself.

Infinite free resolutions over numerical semigroup algebras via specialization

Each numerical semigroup $S$ with smallest positive element $m$ corresponds to an integer point in a polyhedral cone $C_m$, known as the Kunz cone. The faces of $C_m$ form a stratification of numerical semigroups that has been shown to respect a number of algebraic properties of $S$, including the combinatorial structure of the minimal free resolution of the defining toric ideal $I_S$. In this work, we prove that the structure of the infinite free resolution of the ground field $\Bbbk$ over the semigroup algebra $\Bbbk[S]$ also respects this stratification, yielding a new combinatorial approach to classifying homological properties like Golodness and rationality of the poincare series in this setting. Additionally, we give a complete classification of such resolutions in the special case $m = 4$, and demonstrate that the associated graded algebras do not generally respect the same stratification.

CellularResolutions M2 Package

Cellular resolutions are a technique for constructing resolutions of monomial ideals by giving a cell complex labeled by monomials, or more generally, by monomial modules. This \verb|Macaulay2| package allows us to work with cellular resolutions in a natural way.

A Taylor Resolution Over Complete Intersections

The Taylor resolution is a fundamental object in the study of free resolutions over the polynomial ring, due to its explicit formula, cellular/combinatorial structure, and applicability to any and all monomial ideals. This paper generalizes the Taylor resolution to complete intersection rings via the Eisenbud--Shamash construction.

Subcomplexes of Certain Free Resolutions

What are the subcomplexes of a free resolution? This question is simple to state, but the naive approach leads to a computational quagmire that is infeasible even in small cases. In this paper, we invoke the Bernstein--Gelfand--Gelfand (BGG) correspondence to address this question for free resolutions given by two well-known complexes, the Koszul and the Eagon--Northcott. This novel approach provides a complete characterization of the ranks of free modules in a subcomplex in the Koszul case and imposes numerical restrictions in the Eagon--Northcott case.

Identifiability of Linear Compartmental Models: The Impact of Removing Leaks and Edges

A mathematical model is identifiable if its parameters can be recovered from data. Here, we focus on a particular class of model, linear compartmental models, which are used to represent the transfer of substances in a system. We analyze what happens to identifiability when operations are performed on a model, specifically, adding or deleting a leak or an edge. We first consider the conjecture of Gross et al. that states that removing a leak from an identifiable model yields a model that is again identifiable. We prove a special case of this conjecture, and also show that the conjecture is equivalent to asserting that leak terms do not divide the so-called singular-locus equation. As for edge terms that do divide this equation, we conjecture that removing any one of these edges makes the model become unidentifiable, and then prove a case of this somewhat surprising conjecture.

Toward Free Resolutions Over Scrolls

Let $R = k[x]/I$ where $I$ is the defining ideal of a rational normal $k$-scroll. We compute the Betti numbers of the ground field $\mathbb{k}$ as a module over $R$. For $k = 2$, we give the minimal free resolution of $\mathbb{k}$ over $R$.

Counterexamples for Cohen-Macaulayness of Lattice Ideals

Let $\mathscr{L}\subset \mathbb{Z}^n$ be a lattice, $I$ its corresponding lattice ideal, and $J$ the toric ideal arising from the saturation of $\mathscr{L}$. We produce infinitely many examples, in every codimension, of pairs $I,J$ where one of these ideals is Cohen--Macaulay but the other is not.

On transformations of A-hypergeometric functions

We propose a systematic study of transformations of $A$-hypergeometric functions. Our approach is to apply changes of variables corresponding to automorphisms of toric rings, to Euler-type integral representations of $A$-hypergeometric functions. We show that all linear $A$-hypergeometric transformations arise from symmetries of the corresponding polytope. As an application of the techniques developed here, we show that the Appell function $F_4$ does not admit a certain kind of Euler-type integral representation.
