Infinite-peakon solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation

We study a class of (conservative) low regularity solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation on the line by exploiting the classical moment problem (in the framework of generalized indefinite strings) to develop the inverse spectral transform method. In particular, we identify explicitly the solutions that are amenable to this approach, which include solutions made up of infinitely many peaked solitons (peakons). We determine which part of the solution can be recovered from the moments of the underlying spectral measure and provide explicit formulas. We show that the solution can be recovered completely if the corresponding moment problem is determinate, in which case the solution is a (potentially infinite) superposition of peakons. However, we also explore the situation when the underlying moment problem is indeterminate. As an application, our results are then used to investigate the long-time behavior of solutions. We will demonstrate this on three exemplary cases of solutions with: (i) discrete underlying spectrum (one may choose for this initial data corresponding to Al-Salam-Carlitz II polynomials; notice that they correspond to an indeterminate moment problem); (ii) step-like initial data associated with the Laguerre polynomials, and (iii) asymptotically eventually periodic initial data associated with the Jacobi polynomials.

Trace formulas and inverse spectral theory for generalized indefinite strings

Generalized indefinite strings provide a canonical model for self-adjoint operators with simple spectrum (other classical models are Jacobi matrices, Krein strings and 2x2 canonical systems). We prove a number of Szeg\H{o}-type theorems for generalized indefinite strings and related spectral problems (including Krein strings, canonical systems and Dirac operators). More specifically, for several classes of coefficients (that can be regarded as Hilbert-Schmidt perturbations of model problems), we provide a complete characterization of the corresponding set of spectral measures. In particular, our results also apply to the isospectral Lax operator for the conservative Camassa-Holm flow and allow us to establish existence of global weak solutions with various step-like initial conditions of low regularity via the inverse spectral transform.

The conservative Camassa-Holm flow with step-like irregular initial data

We extend the inverse spectral transform for the conservative Camassa-Holm flow on the line to a class of initial data that requires strong decay at one endpoint but only mild boundedness-type conditions at the other endpoint. The latter condition appears to be close to optimal in a certain sense for the well-posedness of the conservative Camassa-Holm flow. As a byproduct of our approach, we also find a family of new (almost) conservation laws for the Camassa-Holm equation, which could not be deduced from its bi-Hamiltonian structure before and which are connected to certain Besov-type norms (however, in a rather involved way). These results appear to be new even under positivity assumptions on the corresponding momentum, in which case the conservative Camassa-Holm flow coincides with the classical Camassa-Holm flow and no blow-ups occur.

Self-adjoint and Markovian extensions of infinite quantum graphs

We investigate the relationship between one of the classical notions of boundaries for infinite graphs, \emph{graph ends}, and self-adjoint extensions of the minimal Kirchhoff Laplacian on a metric graph. We introduce the notion of \emph{finite volume} for ends of a metric graph and show that finite volume graph ends is the proper notion of a boundary for Markovian extensions of the Kirchhoff Laplacian. In contrast to manifolds and weighted graphs, this provides a transparent geometric characterization of the uniqueness of Markovian extensions, as well as of the self-adjointness of the Gaffney Laplacian -- the underlying metric graph does not have finite volume ends. If however finitely many finite volume ends occur (as is the case of edge graphs of normal, locally finite tessellations or Cayley graphs of amenable finitely generated groups), we provide a complete description of Markovian extensions upon introducing a suitable notion of traces of functions and normal derivatives on the set of graph ends.

Laplacians on infinite graphs: discrete vs continuous

There are two main notions of a Laplacian operator associated with graphs: discrete graph Laplacians and continuous Laplacians on metric graphs (widely known as quantum graphs). Both objects have a venerable history as they are related to several diverse branches of mathematics and mathematical physics. The existing literature usually treats these two Laplacian operators separately. In this overview, we will focus on the relationship between them (spectral and parabolic properties). Our main conceptual message is that these two settings should be regarded as complementary (rather than opposite) and exactly their interplay leads to important further insight on both sides.

A note on the Gaffney Laplacian on infinite metric graphs

We show that the deficiency indices of the minimal Gaffney Laplacian on an infinite locally finite metric graph are equal to the number of finite volume graph ends. Moreover, we provide criteria, formulated in terms of finite volume graph ends, for the Gaffney Laplacian to be closed.

Generalized indefinite strings with purely discrete spectrum

We establish criteria for the spectrum of a generalized indefinite string to be purely discrete and to satisfy Schatten-von Neumann properties. The results can be applied to the isospectral problem associated with the conservative Camassa-Holm flow and to Schr\"odinger operators with $\delta'$-interactions.

A Glazman-Povzner-Wienholtz Theorem on graphs

The Glazman-Povzner-Wienholtz theorem states that the completeness of a manifold, when combined with the semiboundedness of the Schrödinger operator $-Δ+ q$ and suitable local regularity assumptions on $q$, guarantees its essential self-adjointness. Our aim is to extend this result to Schrödinger operators on graphs. We first obtain the corresponding theorem for Schrödinger operators on metric graphs, allowing in particular distributional potentials $q\in H^{-1}_{\rm loc}$. Moreover, we exploit recently discovered connections between Schrödinger operators on metric graphs and weighted graphs in order to prove a discrete version of the Glazman-Povzner-Wienholtz theorem.

Heat kernels of the discrete Laguerre operators

For the discrete Laguerre operators we compute explicitly the corresponding heat kernels by expressing them with the help of Jacobi polynomials. This enables us to show that the heat semigroup is ultracontractive and to compute the corresponding norms. On the one hand, this helps us to answer basic questions (recurrence, stochastic completeness) regarding the associated Markovian semigroup. On the other hand, we prove the analogs of the Cwiekel-Lieb-Rosenblum and the Bargmann estimates for perturbations of the Laguerre operators, as well as the optimal Hardy inequality.

Trace formulas and continuous dependence of spectra for the periodic conservative Camassa-Holm flow

This article is concerned with the isospectral problem \[ -f'' + \frac{1}{4} f = zωf + z^2 \upsilon f \] for the periodic conservative Camassa-Holm flow, where $ω$ is a periodic real distribution in $H^{-1}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R})$ and $\upsilon$ is a periodic non-negative Borel measure on $\mathbb{R}$. We develop basic Floquet theory for this problem, derive trace formulas for the associated spectra and establish continuous dependence of these spectra on the coefficients with respect to a weak$^\ast$ topology.

On the absolutely continuous spectrum of generalized indefinite strings II

We continue to investigate absolutely continuous spectrum of generalized indefinite strings. By following an approach of Deift and Killip, we establish stability of the absolutely continuous spectra of two more model examples of generalized indefinite strings under rather wide perturbations. In particular, one of these results allows us to prove that the absolutely continuous spectrum of the isospectral problem associated with the two-component Camassa-Holm system in a certain dispersive regime is essentially supported on the set $(-\infty,-1/2]\cup [1/2,\infty)$.

Quantum graphs on radially symmetric antitrees

We investigate spectral properties of Kirchhoff Laplacians on radially symmetric antitrees. This class of metric graphs enjoys a rich group of symmetries, which enables us to obtain a decomposition of the corresponding Laplacian into the orthogonal sum of Sturm--Liouville operators. In contrast to the case of radially symmetric trees, the deficiency indices of the Laplacian defined on the minimal domain are at most one and they are equal to one exactly when the corresponding metric antitree has finite total volume. In this case, we provide an explicit description of all self-adjoint extensions including the Friedrichs extension. Furthermore, using the spectral theory of Krein strings, we perform a thorough spectral analysis of this model. In particular, we obtain discreteness and trace class criteria, criterion for the Kirchhoff Laplacian to be uniformly positive and provide spectral gap estimates. We show that the absolutely continuous spectrum is in a certain sense a rare event, however, we also present several classes of antitrees such that the absolutely continuous spectrum of the corresponding Laplacian is $[0,\infty)$.

On the absolutely continuous spectrum of generalized indefinite strings

We investigate absolutely continuous spectrum of generalized indefinite strings. By following an approach of Deift and Killip, we establish stability of the absolutely continuous spectra of two model examples of generalized indefinite strings under rather wide perturbations. In particular, one of these results allows us to prove that the absolutely continuous spectrum of the isospectral problem associated with the conservative Camassa-Holm flow in the dispersive regime is essentially supported on the interval $[1/4,\infty)$.

Spectral Estimates for Infinite Quantum Graphs

We investigate the bottom of the spectra of infinite quantum graphs, i.e., Laplace operators on metric graphs having infinitely many edges and vertices. We introduce a new definition of the isoperimetric constant for quantum graphs and then prove the Cheeger-type estimate. Our definition of the isoperimetric constant is purely combinatorial and thus it establishes connections with the combinatorial isoperimetric constant, one of the central objects in spectral graph theory and in the theory of simple random walks on graphs. The latter enables us to prove a number of criteria for quantum graphs to be uniformly positive or to have purely discrete spectrum. We demonstrate our findings by considering trees, antitrees and Cayley graphs of finitely generated groups.

Spectral Theory of Infinite Quantum Graphs

We investigate quantum graphs with infinitely many vertices and edges without the common restriction on the geometry of the underlying metric graph that there is a positive lower bound on the lengths of its edges. Our central result is a close connection between spectral properties of a quantum graph and the corresponding properties of a certain weighted discrete Laplacian on the underlying discrete graph. Using this connection together with spectral theory of (unbounded) discrete Laplacians on infinite graphs, we prove a number of new results on spectral properties of quantum graphs. Namely, we prove several self-adjointness results including a Gaffney type theorem. We investigate the problem of lower semiboundedness, prove several spectral estimates (bounds for the bottom of spectra and essential spectra of quantum graphs, CLR-type estimates) and study spectral types.

Jacobi Polynomials, Bernstein-type Inequalities and Dispersion Estimates for the Discrete Laguerre Operator

The present paper is about Bernstein-type estimates for Jacobi polynomials and their applications to various branches in mathematics. This is an old topic but we want to add a new wrinkle by establishing some intriguing connections with dispersive estimates for a certain class of Schrödinger equations whose Hamiltonian is given by the generalized Laguerre operator. More precisely, we show that dispersive estimates for the Schrödinger equation associated with the generalized Laguerre operator are connected with Bernstein-type inequalities for Jacobi polynomials. We use known uniform estimates for Jacobi polynomials to establish some new dispersive estimates. In turn, the optimal dispersive decay estimates lead to new Bernstein-type inequalities.

Spectral asymptotics for canonical systems

Based on continuity properties of the de Branges correspondence, we develop a new approach to study the high-energy behavior of Weyl-Titchmarsh and spectral functions of $2\times2$ first order canonical systems. Our results improve several classical results and solve open problems posed by previous authors. Furthermore, they are applied to radial Dirac and radial Schrödinger operators as well as to Krein strings and generalized indefinite strings.
