The (Co)homology of the Deligne-Mumford Moduli Spaces of Marked Rational Curves

This informal note collects key results and open problems on the (co)homology of the Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces of real marked rational curves. The open problems are both of topological nature, aiming to investigate the (co)homology of these spaces further, and of algebraic nature, aiming to describe the structure of the homology of these spaces in operad-like terms.

The Cohomology Ring of the Deligne-Mumford Moduli Space of Real Rational Curves with Conjugate Marked Points

It is a long-established and heavily-used fact that the integral cohomology ring of the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of (complex) rational curves is the polynomial ring on the boundary divisors modulo the ideal generated by the obvious geometric relations between them. We show that the rational cohomology ring of the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of real rational curves with conjugate marked points only is the polynomial ring on certain (``complex") boundary divisors and real boundary hypersurfaces modulo the ideal generated by the obvious geometric relations between them and the geometric relation in positive dimension and codimension identified in a previous paper.

Blowdowns of the Deligne-Mumford Spaces of Real Rational Curves

We describe a sequence of smooth quotients of the Deligne-Mumford moduli space ${\mathbb R}\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,\ell+1}$ of real rational curves with $\ell\!+\!1$ conjugate pairs of marked points that terminates at ${\mathbb R}\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,\ell}\!\times\!{\mathbb C}{\mathbb P}^1$. This produces an analogue of Keel's blowup construction of the Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces $\overline{\mathcal M}_{\ell+1}$ of rational curves with $\ell\!+\!1$ marked points, but with an explicit description of the intermediate spaces and the blowups of three different types. The same framework readily adapts to the real moduli spaces with real points. In a sequel, we use this inductive construction of ${\mathbb R}\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,\ell+1}$ to completely determine the rational (co)homology ring of ${\mathbb R}\overline{\mathcal M}_{0,\ell}$.

Geometric Properties of Real Gromov-Witten Invariants

We collect geometric properties of the all-genus real Gromov-Witten theory and provide updates on its development since its introduction in 2015. We bring attention to a modification of the original construction of this theory which is applicable in a broader setting, obtain properties of the orientations of the moduli spaces of real maps under this modification which had previously been obtained for the original construction, and compare such orientations obtained via the two constructions when both constructions are applicable. In particular, the orientation of the moduli space of real maps from a disjoint union of domains may not be the product orientation of the moduli spaces of real maps from its components, a possibility overlooked in our past work.

Algebraic Properties of Real Gromov-Witten Invariants

We describe properties of the previously constructed all-genus real Gromov-Witten theory in the style of Kontsevich-Manin's axioms and other classical equations and reconstruction results of complex Gromov-Witten theory.

Spin/Pin-Structures and Real Enumerative Geometry

The present, partly expository, monograph consists of three parts. The first part treats Spin- and Pin-structures from three different perspectives and shows them to be suitably equivalent. It also introduces an intrinsic perspective on the relative Spin- and Pin-structures of Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono and Solomon, establishes properties of these structures in both perspectives, and again shows them to be suitably equivalent. The second part uses the intrinsic perspective on (relative) Spin- and Pin-structures to detail constructions of orientations on the determinants of real Cauchy-Riemann operators and study their properties. The final part applies the results of the first two parts to the enumerative geometry of real curves and obtains an explicit comparison between the curve signs in the intrinsic definition of Welschinger and later Pin-structure dependent definitions. This comparison makes use of both the classical and instrinisc perspectives on Pin-structures and thus of the equivalence between them established in this monograph. The preface and the introductions to the three parts describe the present work in more detail.

Pseudocycles for Borel-Moore Homology

Pseudocycles are geometric representatives for integral homology classes on smooth manifolds that have proved useful in particular for defining gauge-theoretic invariants. The Borel-Moore homology is often a more natural object to work with in the case of non-compact manifolds than the usual homology. We define weaker versions of the standard notions of pseudocycle and pseudocycle equivalence and then describe a natural isomorphism between the set of equivalence classes of these weaker pseudocycles and the Borel-Moore homology. We also include a direct proof of a Poincar\'e Duality between the singular cohomology of an oriented manifold and its Borel-Moore homology.

The Determinant Line Bundle for Fredholm Operators: Construction, Properties, and Classification

We provide a thorough construction of a system of compatible determinant line bundles over spaces of Fredholm operators, fully verify that this system satisfies a number of important properties, and include explicit formulas for all relevant isomorphisms between these line bundles. We also completely describe all possible systems of compatible determinant line bundles and compare the conventions and approaches used elsewhere in the literature.

Normal Crossings Singularities for Symplectic Topology: Structures

Our previous papers introduce topological notions of normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety, show that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the corresponding geometric notions, and establish a topological smoothability criterion for normal crossings symplectic varieties. The present paper constructs a blowup, a complex line bundle, and a logarithmic tangent bundle naturally associated with a normal crossings symplectic divisor and determines the Chern class of the last bundle. These structures hav applications in constructions and analysis of various moduli spaces. As a corollary of the Chern class formula for the logarithmic tangent bundle, we refine Aluffi's formula for the Chern class of the tangent bundle of the blowup at a complete intersection to account for the torsion and extend it to the blowup at the deepest stratum of an arbitrary normal crossings divisor.

WDVV-Type Relations for Disk Gromov-Witten Invariants in Dimension 6

The first author's previous work established Solomon's WDVV-type relations for Welschinger's invariant curve counts in real symplectic fourfolds by lifting geometric relations over possibly unorientable morphisms. We apply her framework to obtain WDVV-style relations for the disk invariants of real symplectic sixfolds with some symmetry, in particular confirming Alcolado's prediction for $\mathbb{P}^3$ and extending it to other spaces. These relations reduce the computation of Welschinger's invariants of many real symplectic sixfolds to invariants in small degrees and provide lower bounds for counts of real rational curves with positive-dimensional insertions in some cases. In the case of $\mathbb{P}^3$, our lower bounds fit perfectly with Kollár's vanishing results.

WDVV-Type Relations for Welschinger's Invariants: Applications

We first recall Solomon's relations for Welschinger's invariants counting real curves in real symplectic fourfolds, announced in \cite{Jake2} and established in \cite{RealWDVV}, and the WDVV-style relations for Welschinger's invariants counting real curves in real symplectic sixfolds with some symmetry established in \cite{RealWDVV3}. We then explicitly demonstrate that in some important cases (projective spaces with standard conjugations, real blowups of the projective plane, and two- and three-fold products of the one-dimensional projective space with two involutions each), these relations provide complete recursions determining all Welschinger's invariants from basic input. We include extensive tables of Welschinger's invariants in low degrees obtained from these recursions with {\it Mathematica}. These invariants provide lower bounds for counts of real rational curves, including with curve insertions in smooth algebraic threefolds.

Normal Crossings Singularities for Symplectic Topology, II

In recent work, we introduced topological notions of simple normal crossings symplectic divisor and variety, showed that they are equivalent, in a suitable sense, to the corresponding geometric notions, and established a topological smoothability criterion for them. The present paper extends these notions to arbitrary normal crossings singularities, from both local and global perspectives, and shows that they are also equivalent to the corresponding geometric notions. In subsequent papers, we extend our smoothability criterion to arbitrary normal crossings symplectic varieties and construct a variety of geometric structures associated with normal crossings singularities in algebraic geometry.

Some Questions in the Theory of Pseudoholomorphic Curves

This survey article, in honor of G. Tian's 60th birthday, is inspired by R. Pandharipande's 2002 note highlighting research directions central to Gromov-Witten theory in algebraic geometry and by G. Tian's complex-geometric perspective on pseudoholomorphic curves that lies behind many important developments in symplectic topology since the early 1990s.

Real Gromov-Witten Theory in All Genera and Real Enumerative Geometry: Construction

We construct positive-genus analogues of Welschinger's invariants for many real symplectic manifolds, including the odd-dimensional projective spaces and the renowned quintic threefold. In some cases, our invariants provide lower bounds for counts of real positive-genus curves in real algebraic varieties. Our approach to the orientability problem is based entirely on the topology of real bundle pairs over symmetric surfaces; the previous attempts involved direct computations for the determinant lines of Fredholm operators over bordered surfaces. We use the notion of real orientation introduced in this paper to obtain isomorphisms of real bundle pairs over families of symmetric surfaces and then apply the determinant functor to these isomorphisms. This allows us to endow the uncompactified moduli spaces of real maps from symmetric surfaces of all topological types with natural orientations and to verify that they extend across the codimension-one boundaries of these spaces, thus implementing a far-reaching proposal from C.-C. Liu's thesis for a fully fledged real Gromov-Witten theory. The second and third parts of this work concern applications: they describe important properties of our orientations on the moduli spaces, establish some connections with real enumerative geometry, provide the relevant equivariant localization data for projective spaces, and obtain vanishing results in the spirit of Walcher's predictions.

Real Gromov-Witten Theory in All Genera and Real Enumerative Geometry: Properties

The first part of this work constructs positive-genus real Gromov-Witten invariants of real-orientable symplectic manifolds of odd "complex" dimensions; the present part focuses on their properties that are essential for actually working with these invariants. We determine the compatibility of the orientations on the moduli spaces of real maps constructed in the first part with the standard node-identifying immersion of Gromov-Witten theory. We also compare these orientations with alternative ways of orienting the moduli spaces of real maps that are available in special cases. In a sequel, we use the properties established in this paper to compare real Gromov-Witten and enumerative invariants, to describe equivariant localization data that computes the real Gromov-Witten invariants of odd-dimensional projective spaces, and to establish vanishing results for these invariants in the spirit of Walcher's predictions.

Energy Bounds and Vanishing Results for the Gromov-Witten Invariants of the Projective Space

We describe generating functions for arbitrary-genus Gromov-Witten invariants of the projective space with any number of marked points explicitly. The structural portion of this description gives rise to uniform energy bounds and vanishing results for these invariants. They suggest deep conjectures relating Gromov-Witten invariants of symplectic manifolds to the energy of pseudo-holomorphic maps and the expected dimension of their moduli space.

Some conjectures on the asymptotic behavior of Gromov-Witten invariants

The purpose of this note is to share some observations and speculations concerning the asymptotic behavior of Gromov-Witten invariants. They may be indicative of some deep phenomena in symplectic topology that in full generality are outside of the reach of current techniques. On the other hand, many interesting cases can perhaps be treated via combinatorial techniques.
