Holographic approach to transport in dense QCD matter

The transport properties of dense QCD matter play a crucial role in the physics of neutron stars and their mergers, but are notoriously difficult to study with traditional quantum field theory tools. Specializing to the case of unpaired quark matter in beta equilibrium, we approach the problem through the machinery of holography, in particular the V-QCD and D3-D7 models, and derive results for the electrical and thermal conductivities and the shear and bulk viscosities. In addition we compare the bulk to shear viscosity ratio to the speed of sound and find that it violates the so-called Buchel bound. Our results differ dramatically from earlier predictions of perturbative QCD, the root causes and implications of which we analyze in detail.

Evidence for quark-matter cores in massive neutron stars

The theory governing the strong nuclear force, Quantum Chromodynamics, predicts that at sufficiently high energy densities hadronic nuclear matter undergoes a deconfinement transition to a new phase of quarks and gluons. Although this has been observed in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, it is currently an open question whether quark matter exists inside neutron stars. By combining astrophysical observations and theoretical ab-initio calculations in a model-independent way, we find that the inferred properties of matter in the cores of neutron stars with mass corresponding to 1.4 solar masses are compatible with nuclear model calculations. However, the matter in the interior of maximally massive, stable neutron stars exhibits characteristics of the deconfined phase, which we interpret as evidence for the presence of quark-matter cores. For the heaviest reliably observed neutron stars with masses of about two solar masses, the presence of quark matter is found to be linked to the behaviour of the speed of sound c_s in strongly interacting matter. If the conformal bound (c_s)^2 < 1/3 is not strongly violated, massive neutron stars are predicted to have sizable quark-matter cores. This finding has important implications for the phenomenology of neutron stars, and affects the dynamics of neutron star mergers with at least one sufficiently massive participant.

Transport in strongly coupled quark matter

Motivated by the possible presence of deconfined quark matter in neutron stars and their mergers and the important role of transport phenomena in these systems, we perform the first-ever systematic study of different viscosities and conductivities of dense quark matter using the gauge/gravity duality. Utilizing the V-QCD model, we arrive at results that are in qualitative disagreement with the predictions of perturbation theory, which highlights the differing transport properties of the system at weak and strong coupling and calls for caution in the use of the perturbative results in neutron-star applications.

Perturbative Thermal QCD: Formalism and Applications

In this review article, we discuss the current status and future prospects of perturbation theory as a means of studying the equilibrium thermodynamic and near-equilibrium transport properties of deconfined QCD matter. We begin with a brief introduction to the general topic, after which we review in some detail the foundations and modern techniques of the real- and imaginary-time formalisms of thermal field theory, covering e.g. the different bases used in the real-time formalism and the resummations required to deal with soft and collinear contributions. After this, we discuss the current status of applications of these techniques, including topics such as electromagnetic rates, transport coefficients, jet quenching, heavy quarks and quarkonia, and the Equations of State of hot quark-gluon plasma as well as cold and dense quark matter. Finally, we conclude with our view of the future directions of the field, i.e. how we anticipate perturbative calculations to contribute to our collective understanding of strongly interacting matter in the coming years.

Quasinormal modes and thermalization in Improved Holographic QCD

Following a series of similar calculations in simpler non-conformal holographic setups, we determine the quasinormal mode spectrum for an operator dual to a gauge-invariant scalar field within the Improved Holographic QCD framework. At temperatures somewhat above the critical temperature of the deconfinement transition, we find a small number of clearly separated modes followed by a branch-cut-like structure parallel to the real axis, the presence of which is linked to the form of the IHQCD potential employed. The temperature dependence of the lowest nonzero mode is furthermore used to study the thermalization time of the corresponding correlator, which is found to be of the order of the inverse critical temperature near the phase transition and decrease slightly faster than $1/T$ at higher temperatures.

Finite-temperature Equations of State for Neutron Star Mergers

The detection of gravitational waves from a neutron star merger has opened up the possibility of detecting the presence or creation of deconfined quark matter using the gravitational wave signal. To investigate this possibility, we construct a family of neutron star matter equations of state at nonzero density and temperature by combining state-of-the-art nuclear matter equations of state with holographic equations of state for strongly interacting quark matter. The emerging picture consistently points toward a strong first order deconfinement transition, with a temperature-dependent critical density and latent heat that we quantitatively examine. Recent neutron star mass measurements are further used to discriminate between the different equations of state obtained, leaving a tightly constrained family of preferred equations of state.

Constraining the properties of neutron-star matter with observations

In this conference-proceedings contribution, we review recent advances in placing model-independent constraints on the properties of cold and dense QCD matter inside neutron stars. In addition to introducing new bounds for the Equation of State, we explain how these results may be used to make robust statements about the physical phase of strongly interacting matter in the centers of neutron stars of different masses. Our findings indicate that the existence of quark-matter cores inside massive neutron stars appears to be a very common feature of the allowed Equations of State, and should not be considered an exotic or unlikely scenario.

Holographic compact stars meet gravitational wave constraints

We investigate a simple holographic model for cold and dense deconfined QCD matter consisting of three quark flavors. Varying the single free parameter of the model and utilizing a Chiral Effective Theory equation of state (EoS) for nuclear matter, we find four different compact star solutions: traditional neutron stars, strange quark stars, as well as two non-standard solutions we refer to as hybrid stars of the second and third kind (HS2 and HS3). The HS2s are composed of a nuclear matter core and a crust made of stable strange quark matter, while the HS3s have both a quark mantle and a nuclear crust on top of a nuclear matter core. For all types of stars constructed, we determine not only their mass-radius relations, but also tidal deformabilities, Love numbers, as well as moments of inertia and the mass distribution. We find that there exists a range of parameter values in our model, for which the novel hybrid stars have properties in very good agreement with all existing bounds on the stationary properties of compact stars. In particular, the tidal deformabilities of these solutions are smaller than those of ordinary neutron stars of the same mass, implying that they provide an excellent fit to the recent gravitational wave data GW170817 of LIGO and Virgo. The assumptions underlying the viability of the different star types, in particular those corresponding to absolutely stable quark matter, are finally discussed at some length.

Nonperturbative Analysis of the Electroweak Phase Transition in the Two Higgs Doublet Model

We perform a nonperturbative study of the electroweak phase transition (EWPT) in the two Higgs doublet model (2HDM) by deriving a dimensionally reduced high-temperature effective theory for the model, and matching to known results for the phase diagram of the effective theory. We find regions of the parameter space where the theory exhibits a first-order phase transition. In particular, our findings are consistent with previous perturbative results suggesting that the primary signature of a first-order EWPT in the 2HDM is $m_{A_0} > m_{H_0} + m_Z$.

Neutron stars and stellar mergers as a laboratory for dense QCD matter

Neutron star observations, including direct mass and radius measurements as well as the analysis of gravitational wave signals emitted by stellar mergers, provide valuable and unique insights into the properties of strongly interacting matter at high densities. In this proceedings contribution, I review recent efforts to systematically constrain the equation of state (EoS) of dense nuclear and quark matter using a combination of ab initio particle and nuclear physics calculations and astrophysical data. In particular, I discuss the constraints that the gravitational wave observation GW170817 has placed on the EoS, and comment on the future prospects of improving the accuracy, to which this quantity is known.

Gravitational-wave constraints on the neutron-star-matter Equation of State

The LIGO/Virgo detection of gravitational waves originating from a neutron-star merger, GW170817, has recently provided new stringent limits on the tidal deformabilities of the stars involved in the collision. Combining this measurement with the existence of two-solar-mass stars, we generate a generic family of neutron-star-matter Equations of State (EoSs) that interpolate between state-of-the-art theoretical results at low and high baryon density. Comparing the results to ones obtained without the tidal-deformability constraint, we witness a dramatic reduction in the family of allowed EoSs. Based on our analysis, we conclude that the maximal radius of a 1.4-solar-mass neutron star is 13.6 km, and that smallest allowed tidal deformability of a similar-mass star is $Λ(1.4 M_\odot) = 120$.

Stiff phases in strongly coupled gauge theories with holographic duals

According to common lore, Equations of State of field theories with gravity duals tend to be soft, with speeds of sound either below or around the conformal value of $v_s=1/\sqrt{3}$. This has important consequences in particular for the physics of compact stars, where the detection of two solar mass neutron stars has been shown to require very stiff equations of state. In this paper, we show that no speed limit exists for holographic models at finite density, explicitly constructing examples where the speed of sound becomes arbitrarily close to that of light. This opens up the possibility of building hybrid stars that contain quark matter obeying a holographic equation of state in their cores.

Dimensional reduction of the Standard Model coupled to a new singlet scalar field

We derive an effective dimensionally reduced theory for the Standard Model augmented by a real singlet scalar. We treat the singlet as a superheavy field and integrate it out, leaving an effective theory involving only the Higgs and $\mathrm{SU}(2)_\mathrm{L} \times \mathrm{U}(1)_Y$ gauge fields, identical to the one studied previously for the Standard Model. This opens up the possibility of efficiently computing the order and strength of the electroweak phase transition, numerically and nonperturbatively, in this extension of the Standard Model. Understanding the phase diagram is crucial for models of electroweak baryogenesis and for studying the production of gravitational waves at thermal phase transitions.

Quark Matter Equation of State from Perturbative QCD

In this proceedings contribution, we discuss recent developments in the perturbative determination of the Equation of State of dense quark matter, relevant for the microscopic description of neutron star cores. First, we introduce the current state of the art in the problem, both at zero and small temperatures, and then present results from two recent perturbative studies that pave the way towards extending the EoS to higher orders in perturbation theory.

Breaking the sound barrier in AdS/CFT

It has been conjectured that the speed of sound in holographic models with UV fixed points has an upper bound set by the value of the quantity in conformal field theory. If true, this would set stringent constraints for the presence of strongly coupled quark matter in the cores of physical neutron stars, as the existence of two-solar-mass stars appears to demand a very stiff Equation of State. In this article, we present a family of counterexamples to the speed of sound conjecture, consisting of strongly coupled theories at finite density. The theories we consider include ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills at finite R-charge density and non-zero gaugino masses, while the holographic duals are Einstein-Maxwell theories with a minimally coupled scalar in a charged black hole geometry. We show that for a small breaking of conformal invariance, the speed of sound approaches the conformal value from above at large chemical potentials.

On high-order perturbative calculations at finite density

We discuss the prospects of performing high-order perturbative calculations in systems characterized by a vanishing temperature but finite density. In particular, we show that the determination of generic Feynman integrals containing fermionic chemical potentials can be reduced to the evaluation of three-dimensional phase space integrals over vacuum on-shell amplitudes - a result reminiscent of a previously proposed "naive real-time formalism" for vacuum diagrams. Applications of these rules are discussed in the context of the thermodynamics of cold and dense QCD, where it is argued that they facilitate an extension of the Equation of State of cold quark matter to higher perturbative orders.

Cool quark matter

We generalize the state-of-the-art perturbative Equation of State of cold quark matter to nonzero temperatures, needed in the description of neutron star mergers and core collapse processes. The new result is accurate to order g^5 in the gauge coupling, and is based on a novel framework for dealing with the infrared sensitive soft field modes of the theory. The zero Matsubara mode sector is treated using a dimensionally reduced effective theory, while the soft non-zero modes are resummed using the Hard Thermal Loop approximation. This combination of known effective descriptions offers unprecedented access to small but nonzero temperatures, both in and out of beta equilibrium.
