Characterizing Sobolev Homeomorphic Extensions via Internal Distances

We give a full characterization of embeddings of the unit circle that admit a Sobolev homeomorphic extension to the unit disk. As a direct corollary, we establish that for quasiconvex target domains $\mathbb Y$, any homeomorphism $\varphi \colon \partial \mathbb{D} \to \partial \mathbb Y$ that admits a continuous $W^{1,p}$-extension to the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ also admits a $W^{1,p}$-homeomorphic extension. These Sobolev variants of the classical Jordan-Sch\"onflies theorem are essential for ensuring the well-posedness of variational problems arising in Nonlinear Elasticity and Geometric Function Theory.

Extension of planar Hölder homeomorphisms

Let $α$ \in (0; 1). We show that any $α$-Hölder homeomorphism from the unit circle in the plane to the plane can be extended to an $α$-Hölder homeomorphism from the whole unit disc.

Lower semicontinuity, Stoilow factorization and principal maps

We consider a strengthening of the usual quasiconvexity condition of Morrey in two dimensions, which allows us to prove lower semicontinuity for functionals which are unbounded as the determinant vanishes. This notion, that we call principal quasiconvexity, arose from the planar theory of quasiconformal mappings and mappings of finite distortion. We compare it with other quasiconvexity conditions that have appeared in the literature and provide a number of concrete examples of principally quasiconvex functionals that are not polyconvex. The Stoilow factorization, that in the context of maps of integrable distortion was developed by Iwaniec and \v{S}ver\'ak, plays a prominent role in our approach.

The local Burkholder functional, quasiconvexity and Geometric Function Theory

We show that the local Burkholder functional $\mathcal B_K$ is quasiconvex. In the limit of $p$ going to 2 we find a class of non-polyconvex functionals which are quasiconvex on the set of matrices with positive determinant. In order to prove the validity of lower semicontinuity arguments in this setting, we show that the Burkholder functionals satisfy a sharp extension of the classical function theoretic area formula. As a corollary, in addition to functionals in geometric function theory, one finds new classes of non-polyconvex functionals, degenerating as the determinant vanishes, for which there is existence of minimizers.

Bi-Sobolev extensions

We give a full characterization of circle homeomorphisms which admit a homeomorphic extension to the unit disk with finite bi-Sobolev norm. As a special case, a bi-conformal variant of the famous Beurling-Ahlfors extension theorem is obtained. Furthermore we show that the existing extension techniques such as applying either the harmonic or the Beurling-Ahlfors operator work poorly in the degenerated setting. This also gives an affirmative answer to a question of Karafyllia and Ntalampekos.

Sobolev homeomorphic extensions from two to three dimensions

We study the basic question of characterizing which boundary homeomorphisms of the unit sphere can be extended to a Sobolev homeomorphism of the interior in 3D space. While the planar variants of this problem are well-understood, completely new and direct ways of constructing an extension are required in 3D. We prove, among other things, that a Sobolev homeomorphism $φ\colon \mathbb R^2 \to \mathbb R^2$ in $W_{loc}^{1,p} (\mathbb R^2 , \mathbb R^2)$ for some $p\in [1,\infty )$ admits a homeomorphic extension $h \colon \mathbb R^3 \to \mathbb R^3$ in $W_{loc}^{1,q} (\mathbb R^3, \mathbb R^3) $ for $1\le q < \frac{3}{2}p$. Such an extension result is nearly sharp, as the bound $q=\frac{3}{2}p$ cannot be improved due to the Hölder embedding. The case $q=3$ gains an additional interest as it also provides an $L^1$-variant of the celebrated Beurling-Ahlfors extension result.

Analytic characterization of monotone Hopf-harmonics

We study solutions of the inner-variational equation associated with the Dirichlet energy in the plane, given homeomorphic Sobolev boundary data. We prove that such a solution is monotone if and only if its Jacobian determinant does not change sign. These solutions, called monotone Hopf-harmonics, are a natural alternative to harmonic homeomorphisms. Examining the topological behavior of a solution (not a priori monotone) on the trajectories of Hopf quadratic differentials plays a sizable role in our arguments.

The Sobolev Jordan-Schonflies Problem

We consider the planar unit disk $\mathbb D$ as the reference configuration and a Jordan domain $\mathbb Y$ as the deformed configuration, and study the problem of extending a given boundary homeomorphism $φ\colon \partial \mathbb D \to \partial \mathbb Y$ as a Sobolev homeomorphism of the complex plane. Investigating such a Sobolev variant of the classical Jordan-Schönflies theorem is motivated by the well-posedness of the related pure displacement variational questions in the theory of Nonlinear Elasticity (NE) and Geometric Function Theory (GFT). Clearly, the necessary condition for the boundary mapping $φ$ to admit a $W^{1,p}$-Sobolev homeomorphic extension is that it first admits a continuous $W^{1,p}$-Sobolev extension. For an arbitrary target domain $\mathbb Y$ this, however, is not sufficent.

Sobolev homeomorphic extensions onto John domains

Given the planar unit disk as the source and a Jordan domain as the target, we study the problem of extending a given boundary homeomorphism as a Sobolev homeomorphism. For general targets, this Sobolev variant of the classical Jordan-Schoenflies theorem may admit no solution - it is possible to have a boundary homeomorphism which admits a continuous $W^{1,2}$-extension but not even a homeomorphic $W^{1,1}$-extension. We prove that if the target is assumed to be a John disk, then any boundary homeomorphism from the unit circle admits a Sobolev homeomorphic extension for all exponents $p<2$. John disks, being one sided quasidisks, are of fundamental importance in Geometric Function Theory.

Improved Hölder regularity for strongly elliptic PDEs

We establish surprising improved Schauder regularity properties for solutions to the Leray-Lions divergence type equation in the plane. The results are achieved by studying the nonlinear Beltrami equation and making use of special new relations between these two equations. In particular, we show that solutions to an autonomous Beltrami equation enjoy a quantitative improved degree of Hölder regularity, higher than what is given by the classical exponent $1/K$.

The Radó-Kneser-Choquet theorem for $p$-harmonic mappings between Riemannian surfaces

In the planar setting the Radó-Kneser-Choquet theorem states that a harmonic map from the unit disk onto a Jordan domain bounded by a convex curve is a diffeomorphism provided that the boundary mapping is a homeomorphism. We prove the injectivity criterion of Radó-Kneser-Choquet for $p$-harmonic mappings between Riemannian surfaces. In our proof of the injecticity criterion we approximate the $p$-harmonic map with auxiliary mappings that solve uniformly elliptic systems. We prove that each auxiliary mapping has a positive Jacobian by a homotopy argument. We keep the maps injective all the way through the homotopy with the help of the minimum principle for a certain subharmonic expression that is related to the Jacobian.

Radially symmetry of minimizers to the weighted Dirichlet energy

We consider the problem of minimizing the weighted Dirichlet energy between homeomorphisms of planar annuli. A known challenge lies in the case when the weight $λ$ depends on the independent variable $z$. We prove that for an increasing radial weight $λ(z)$ the infimal energy within the class of all Sobolev homeomorphisms is the same as in the class of radially symmetric maps. For a general radial weight $λ(z)$ we establish the same result in the case when the target is conformally thin compared to the domain. Fixing the admissible homeomorphisms on the outer boundary we establish the radial symmetry for every such weight.

Sobolev homeomorphic extensions

Let $\mathbb X$ and $\mathbb Y$ be $\ell$-connected Jordan domains, $\ell \in \mathbb N$, with rectifiable boundaries in the complex plane. We prove that any boundary homeomorphism $φ\colon \partial \mathbb X \to \partial \mathbb Y$ admits a Sobolev homeomorphic extension $h \colon \overline{\mathbb X} \to \overline{\mathbb Y}$ in $W^{1,1} (\mathbb X, \mathbb C)$. If instead $\mathbb X$ has $s$-hyperbolic growth with $s>p-1$, we show the existence of such an extension lies in the Sobolev class $W^{1,p} (\mathbb X, \mathbb C)$ for $p\in (1,2)$. Our examples show that the assumptions of rectifiable boundary and hyperbolic growth cannot be relaxed. We also consider the existence of $W^{1,2}$-homeomorphic extensions subject to a given boundary data.

Radial symmetry of p-harmonic minimizers

"It is still not known if the radial cavitating minimizers obtained by Ball [J.M. Ball, Discontinuous equilibrium solutions and cavitation in nonlinear elasticity, Phil. Trans. R. Soc. Lond. A 306 (1982) 557--611] (and subsequently by many others) are global minimizers of any physically reasonable nonlinearly elastic energy". The quotation is from [J. Sivaloganathan and S. J. Spector, Necessary conditions for a minimum at a radial cavitating singularity in nonlinear elasticity, Ann. Inst. H. Poincare Anal. Non Lineaire 25 (2008), no. 1, 201--213] and seems to be still accurate. The model case of the $p$-harmonic energy is considered here. We prove that the planar radial minimizers are indeed the global minimizers provided we prescribe the admissible deformations on the boundary. In the traction free setting, however, even the identity map need not be a global minimizer.
