Proper SL(2,R)-actions on homogeneous spaces

We study the existence problem of proper actions of SL(2,R) on homogeneous spaces G/H of reductive type. Based on Kobayashi's properness criterion [Math. Ann. (1989)], we show that G/H admits a proper SL(2,R)-action via G if a maximally split abelian subspace of Lie H is included in the wall defined by a restricted root of Lie G. We also give a number of examples of such G/H.

On a classification of fat bundles over compact homogeneous spaces

This article deals with fat bundles. Berard-Bergery classified all homogeneous bundles of that type. We ask a question of a possibility to generalize his description in the case of arbitrary G-structures over homogeneous spaces. We obtain necessary conditions for the existence of such bundles. These conditions yield a kind of classification of fat bundles associated with G-structures over compact homogeneous spaces provided that the connection in a G-structure is canonical.

On formality of Sasakian manifolds

We investigate some topological properties, in particular formality, of compact Sasakian manifolds. Answering some questions raised by Boyer and Galicki, we prove that all higher (than three) Massey products on any compact Sasakian manifold vanish. Hence, higher Massey products do obstruct Sasakian structures. Using this we produce a method of constructing simply connected K-contact non-Sasakian manifolds. On the other hand, for every $n \geq 3$, we exhibit the first examples of simply connected compact Sasakian manifolds of dimension $2n + 1$ which are non-formal. They are non-formal because they have a non-zero triple Massey product. We also prove that arithmetic lattices in some simple Lie groups cannot be the fundamental group of a compact Sasakian manifold.

On symplectically fat twistor bundles

This paper deals with the question when are twistor bundles over homogeneous spaces symplectically fat? It shows that twistor bundles over even dimensional Grassmannians of maximal rank have this property.

New constructions of symplectically fat fiber bundles

This work is devoted to new constructions of symplectically fat fiber bundles. The latter are constructed in two ways: using the Kirwan map and expressing the fatness condition in terms of the isotropy representation related to the G-structure over some homogeneous spaces.

Clifford-Klein forms and a-hyperbolic rank

The porpose of this article is to introduce and investigate properties of a tool (the a-hyperbolic rank) which enables us to obtain new examples of homogeneous spaces G/H which admit and do not admit almost compact Clifford-Klein forms. We achieve this goal by exploring in greater detail the technique of adjoint orbits developed by Okuda combined with the well-known conditions of Benoist. We find easy-to-check conditions on G and H expressed directly in terms of the Satake diagrams of the corresponding Lie algebras, in cases when G is a real form of a complex Lie group of types A, D or E6. One of the advantages of this approach is the fact that we don't need to know the embedding of H into G. Using the a-hyperbolic rank we also show that the homogeneous space G/H of reductive type of the real form of E6 (of the IV type) admits compact Clifford-Klein forms if and only if H is compact. Inspired by the work of Okuda on symmetric spaces G/H we classify all 3-symmetric spaces admitting almost compact Clifford-Klein forms.

Simply-connected K-contact and Sasakian manifolds of dimension 7

We construct a compact simply-connected 7-dimensional manifold admitting a K-contact structure but not a Sasakian structure. We also study rational homotopy properties of such manifolds, proving in particular that a simply-connected 7-dimensional Sasakian manifold has vanishing cup-product on the second cohomology and that it is formal if and only if all its triple Massey products vanish.

On simply connected K-contact non-Sasakian manifolds

We solve the problem posed by Boyer and Galicki about the existence of K-contact simply connected manifolds with no Sasakian structure. Although the result lies in the framework of metric contact geometry, our methods come from contact and symplectic geometry and are based on the method of fat bundles developed by Sternberg, Weinstein and Lerman.

Generalized symplectic symmetric spaces

Bielavsky introduced and investigated the class of symmetric symplectic spaces, that is, symmetric spaces endowed with a symplectic form invariant with respect to symmetries. Since the theory of symmetric spaces has generalizations, we ask a question about their possible symplectic versions. We do construct such generalizations and extend some of Bieliavsky's results. In particular, we classify all 3-symmetric symplectic spaces.

Symplectically aspherical manifolds

This is a survey article on symplectically aspherical manifolds. The paper contains a discussion on constructions of symplectically aspherical manifolds, their topological properties and the role of this class in symplectic topology. Research perspectives are discussed.

Diffeomorphisms and almost complex structures on tori

We prove that there exist diffeomorphisms of tori, supported in a disc, which are not isotopic to symplectomorphisms with respect to any symplectic structure. This yields a partial negative answer to a question of Benson and Gordon about the existence of symplectic structures on tori with exotic differential structure.

Exotic smooth structures and symplectic forms on closed manifolds

We give a short proof of the (known) result that there are no Kaehler structures on exotic tori. This yields a negative solution to a problem posed by Benson and Gordon. W discuss the symplectic version of the problem and analyze results which yield an evidence for the conjecture that there are no symplectic structures on exotic tori.

Symplectically aspherical manifolds

The main subjects of the paper is studying the fundamental groups of closed symplectically aspherical manifolds. Motivated by some results of Gompf, we introduce two classes of fundamental groups $π_1(M)$ of symplectically aspherical manifolds $M$ with $π_2(M)=0$ and $π_2(M)\neq 0$. Relations between these classes are discussed. We show that several important classes of groups can be realized in both classes, while some of groups can be realized in the first class but not in the second one. Also, we notice that there are some interesting dimensional phenomena in the realization problem. The above results are framed by a general research of symplectically aspherical manifolds. For example, we find some conditions which imply that the Gompf sum of symplectically aspherical manifolds is symplectically aspherical, or that a total space of a bundle is symplectically aspherical, etc.

A note on hamiltonian Lie group actions and Massey products

In this note we show that the property of having only vanishing triple Massey products in the equivariant cohomology is inherited by the set of fixed points of hamiltonian circle actions on closed symplectic manifolds. This result can be considered in a more general context of characterizing homotopic properties of Lie group actions. In particular, it can be viewed as a partial answer to the Allday-Puppe question about finding conditions ensuring the "formality" of G-actions.

On Thom spaces, Massey products and non-formal symplectic manifolds

In this work we analyze the behavior of Massey products of closed manifolds under the blow-up construction. The results obtained in the article are applied to the problem of constructing closed symplectic non-formal manifolds. The proofs use Thom spaces as an important technical tool. This application of Thom spaces is of conceptual interest.
