Large deviations of the empirical flow for continuous time Markov chains

We consider a continuous time Markov chain on a countable state space and prove a joint large deviation principle for the empirical measure and the empirical flow, which accounts for the total number of jumps between pairs of states. We give a direct proof using tilting and an indirect one by contraction from the empirical process.

Mixing time and local exponential ergodicity of the East-like process in $\mathbf Z^d$

The East process, a well known reversible linear chain of spins, represents the prototype of a general class of interacting particle systems with constraints modeling the dynamics of real glasses. In this paper we consider a generalization of the East process living in the d-dimensional lattice and we establish new progresses on the out- of-equilibrium behavior. In particular we prove a form of (local) exponential ergodicity when the initial distribution is far from the stationary one and we prove that the mixing time in a finite box grows linearly in the side of the box.

The influence of dimension on the relaxation process of East-like models

We consider the relaxation process and the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of natural generalizations to arbitrary dimensions of the well known one dimensional East process. These facilitated models are supposed to catch some of the main features of the complex dynamics of fragile glasses. We focus on the low temperature regime (small density $c \approx e^{-β}$ of the facilitating sites). In the literature the relaxation process for the above models has been assumed to be quasi-one dimensional and, in particular, their equilibration time has been computed using the relaxation time of the East model ($d=1$) on the equilibrium length scale $L_c=(1/c)^{1/d}$ in $d$-dimension. This led to the derivation of a super-Arrhenius scaling for the relaxation time of the form $T_{\rm rel} \asymp \exp(β^2/d\log 2)$. In a companion paper, using mainly renormalization group ideas and electrical networks methods, we rigorously establish that instead $T_{\rm rel} \asymp \exp(β^2/2d\log 2)$, a result showing that the relaxation process cannot be quasi-one-dimensional. The above scaling sharply confirms previous MCAMC (Monte Carlo with Absorbing Markov Chains) simulations. Next we compute the relaxation time at finite and mesoscopic length scales, and show a dramatic dependence on the boundary conditions, yet another indication of key dimensional effects. Our final result is related to the out-of-equilibrium dynamics. Starting with a single facilitating site at the origin we show that, up to length scales $L=O(L_c)$, its influence propagates much faster (on a logarithmic scale) along the diagonal direction than along the axes directions. Such unexpected result is due to a rather delicate balance between dynamical energy barriers and entropic effects in the constrained dynamics.

Discrete kinetic models for molecular motors: asymptotic velocity and gaussian fluctuations

We consider random walks on quasi one dimensional lattices, as introduced in \cite{FS}. This mathematical setting covers a large class of discrete kinetic models for non-cooperative molecular motors on periodic tracks. We derive general formulas for the asymptotic velocity and diffusion coefficient, and we show how to reduce their computation to suitable linear systems of the same degree of a single fundamental cell, with possible linear chain removals. We apply the above results to special families of kinetic models, also catching some errors in the biophysics literature.

Random walks on quasi one dimensional lattices: large deviations and fluctuation theorems

Several stochastic processes modeling molecular motors on a linear track are given by random walks (not necessarily Markovian) on quasi 1d lattices and share a common regenerative structure. Analyzing this abstract common structure, we derive information on the large fluctuations of the stochastic process by proving large deviation principles for the first--passage times and for the position. We focus our attention on the Gallavotti-Cohen-type symmetry of the position rate function (fluctuation theorem), showing its equivalence with the independence of suitable random variables. In the special case of Markov random walks, we show that this symmetry is universal only inside a suitable class of quasi 1d lattices.

Time scale separation and dynamic heterogeneity in the low temperature East model

We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics of the East model, a linear chain of 0-1 spins evolving under a simple Glauber dynamics in the presence of a kinetic constraint which forbids flips of those spins whose left neighbor is 1. We focus on the glassy effects caused by the kinetic constraint as $q\downarrow 0$, where $q$ is the equilibrium density of the 0's. In the physical literature this limit is equivalent to the zero temperature limit. We first prove that, for any given $L=O(1/q)$, the divergence as $q\downarrow 0$ of three basic characteristic time scales of the East process of length $L$ is the same. Then we examine the problem of dynamic heterogeneity, i.e. non-trivial spatio-temporal fluctuations of the local relaxation to equilibrium, one of the central aspects of glassy dynamics. For any mesoscopic length scale $L=O(q^{-γ})$, $γ<1$, we show that the characteristic time scale of two East processes of length $L$ and $λL$ respectively are indeed separated by a factor $q^{-a}$, $a=a(γ)>0$, provided that $λ\geq 2$ is large enough (independent of $q$, $λ=2$ for $γ<1/2$). In particular, the evolution of mesoscopic domains, i.e. maximal blocks of the form $111..10$, occurs on a time scale which depends sharply on the size of the domain, a clear signature of dynamic heterogeneity. A key result for this part is a very precise computation of the relaxation time of the chain as a function of $(q,L)$, well beyond the current knowledge, which uses induction on length scales on one hand and a novel algorithmic lower bound on the other. Finally we show that no form of time scale separation occurs for $γ=1$, i.e. at the equilibrium scale $L=1/q$, contrary to what was assumed in the physical literature based on numerical simulations.

Large deviation principles for nongradient weakly asymmetric stochastic lattice gases

We consider a lattice gas on the discrete d-dimensional torus $(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})^d$ with a generic translation invariant, finite range interaction satisfying a uniform strong mixing condition. The lattice gas performs a Kawasaki dynamics in the presence of a weak external field E/N. We show that, under diffusive rescaling, the hydrodynamic behavior of the lattice gas is described by a nonlinear driven diffusion equation. We then prove the associated dynamical large deviation principle. Under suitable assumptions on the external field (e.g., E constant), we finally analyze the variational problem defining the quasi-potential and characterize the optimal exit trajectory. From these results we deduce the asymptotic behavior of the stationary measures of the stochastic lattice gas, which are not explicitly known. In particular, when the external field E is constant, we prove a stationary large deviation principle for the empirical density and show that the rate function does not depend on E.

Time scale separation in the low temperature East model: Rigorous results

We consider the non-equilibrium dynamics of the East model, a linear chain of 0-1 spins evolving under a simple Glauber dynamics in the presence of a kinetic constraint which forbids flips of those spins whose left neighbour is 1. We focus on the glassy effects caused by the kinetic constraint as $q\downarrow 0$, where $q$ is the equilibrium density of the 0's. Specifically we analyse time scale separation and dynamic heterogeneity, i.e. non-trivial spatio-temporal fluctuations of the local relaxation to equilibrium, one of the central aspects of glassy dynamics. For any mesoscopic length scale $L=O(q^{-γ})$, $γ<1$, we show that the characteristic time scale associated to two length scales $d/q^γ$ and $d'/q^γ$ are indeed separated by a factor $q^{-a}$, $a=a(γ)>0$, provided that $d'/d$ is large enough independently of $q$. In particular, the evolution of mesoscopic domains, i.e. maximal blocks of the form $111..10$, occurs on a time scale which depends sharply on the size of the domain, a clear signature of dynamic heterogeneity. Finally we show that no form of time scale separation can occur for $γ=1$, i.e. at the equilibrium scale $L=1/q$, contrary to what was previously assumed in the physical literature based on numerical simulations.

Universality in one-dimensional hierarchical coalescence processes

Motivated by several models introduced in the physics literature to study the nonequilibrium coarsening dynamics of one-dimensional systems, we consider a large class of "hierarchical coalescence processes" (HCP). An HCP consists of an infinite sequence of coalescence processes ${ξ^{(n)}(\cdot)}_{n\ge1}$: each process occurs in a different "epoch" (indexed by $n$) and evolves for an infinite time, while the evolution in subsequent epochs are linked in such a way that the initial distribution of $ξ^{(n+1)}$ coincides with the final distribution of $ξ^{(n)}$. Inside each epoch the process, described by a suitable simple point process representing the boundaries between adjacent intervals (domains), evolves as follows. Only intervals whose length belongs to a certain epoch-dependent finite range are active, that is, they can incorporate their left or right neighboring interval with quite general rates. Inactive intervals cannot incorporate their neighbors and can increase their length only if they are incorporated by active neighbors. The activity ranges are such that after a merging step the newly produced interval always becomes inactive for that epoch but active for some future epoch. Without making any mean-field assumption we show that: (i) if the initial distribution describes a renewal process, then such a property is preserved at all later times and all future epochs; (ii) the distribution of certain rescaled variables, for example, the domain length, has a well-defined and universal limiting behavior as $n\to \infty$ independent of the details of the process (merging rates, activity ranges$,...$). This last result explains the universality in the limiting behavior of several very different physical systems (e.g., the East model of glassy dynamics or the Paste-all model) which was observed in several simulations and analyzed in many physics papers. The main idea to obtain the asymptotic result is to first write down a recursive set of nonlinear identities for the Laplace transforms of the relevant quantities on different epochs and then to solve it by means of a transformation which in some sense linearizes the system.

The East model: recent results and new progresses

The East model is a particular one dimensional interacting particle system in which certain transitions are forbidden according to some constraints depending on the configuration of the system. As such it has received particular attention in the physics literature as a special case of a more general class of systems referred to as kinetically constrained models, which play a key role in explaining some features of the dynamics of glasses. In this paper we give an extensive overview of recent rigorous results concerning the equilibrium and non-equilibrium dynamics of the East model together with some new improvements.

Stationarity, time--reversal and fluctuation theory for a class of piecewise deterministic Markov processes

We consider a class of stochastic dynamical systems, called piecewise deterministic Markov processes, with states $(x, \s)\in Ø\times \G$, $Ø$ being a region in $\bbR^d$ or the $d$--dimensional torus, $\G$ being a finite set. The continuous variable $x$ follows a piecewise deterministic dynamics, the discrete variable $\s$ evolves by a stochastic jump dynamics and the two resulting evolutions are fully--coupled. We study stationarity, reversibility and time--reversal symmetries of the process. Increasing the frequency of the $\s$--jumps, we show that the system behaves asymptotically as deterministic and we investigate the structure of fluctuations (i.e. deviations from the asymptotic behavior), recovering in a non Markovian frame results obtained by Bertini et al. \cite{BDGJL1, BDGJL2, BDGJL3, BDGJL4}, in the context of Markovian stochastic interacting particle systems. Finally, we discuss a Gallavotti--Cohen--type symmetry relation with involution map different from time--reversal. For several examples the above results are recovered by explicit computations.

Spectral analysis of Sinai's walk for small eigenvalues

Sinai's walk can be thought of as a random walk on $\mathbb {Z}$ with random potential $V$, with $V$ weakly converging under diffusive rescaling to a two-sided Brownian motion. We consider here the generator $\mathbb {L}_N$ of Sinai's walk on $[-N,N]\cap \mathbb {Z}$ with Dirichlet conditions on $-N,N$. By means of potential theory, for each $h>0$, we show the relation between the spectral properties of $\mathbb {L}_N$ for eigenvalues of order $o(\exp(-h\sqrt{N}))$ and the distribution of the $h$-extrema of the rescaled potential $V_N(x)\equiv V(Nx)/\sqrt{N}$ defined on $[-1,1]$. Information about the $h$-extrema of $V_N$ is derived from a result of Neveu and Pitman concerning the statistics of $h$-extrema of Brownian motion. As first application of our results, we give a proof of a refined version of Sinai's localization theorem.

Isoperimetric inequalities and mixing time for a random walk on a random point process

We consider the random walk on a simple point process on $\Bbb{R}^d$, $d\geq2$, whose jump rates decay exponentially in the $α$-power of jump length. The case $α=1$ corresponds to the phonon-induced variable-range hopping in disordered solids in the regime of strong Anderson localization. Under mild assumptions on the point process, we show, for $α\in(0,d)$, that the random walk confined to a cubic box of side $L$ has a.s. Cheeger constant of order at least $L^{-1}$ and mixing time of order $L^2$. For the Poisson point process, we prove that at $α=d$, there is a transition from diffusive to subdiffusive behavior of the mixing time.

Spectral characterization of aging: the rem-like trap model

We review the aging phenomenon in the context of the simplest trap model, Bouchaud's REM-like trap model, from a spectral theoretic point of view. We show that the generator of the dynamics of this model can be diagonalized exactly. Using this result, we derive closed expressions for correlation functions in terms of complex contour integrals that permit an easy investigation into their large time asymptotics in the thermodynamic limit. We also give a ``grand canonical'' representation of the model in terms of the Markov process on a Poisson point process. In this context we analyze the dynamics on various time scales.
