Di-hadron Fragmentation Functions beyond LO

In this talk, we discuss the extraction of Dihadron Fragmentation Functions (DiFFs) beyond leading order. In particular, we review the latest extraction by the MAP Collaboration of the Unpolarized Dihadron Fragmentation Functions (DiFFs) from a fit of the 2017 BELLE data for the inclusive $π^+π^-$ pair production within the same jet in $e^+e^-$ annihilations. This new extraction improves the perturbative QCD accuracy by including NNLO calculations, relies on Monte Carlo generators only for flavor decomposition, and complements the traditional physics-informed parametrization with a Neural Network extraction. We also discuss the setup for the extraction of the transversely polarized DiFFs, where we revisit the NLO calculation for $e^+e^-$ annihilation into a transversely polarized quark-antiquark pair, obtaining a result different from the one reported in the literature.

Symbolic Extraction of Non-Perturbative Transverse-Momentum-Dependent Distributions from Drell-Yan Data

We present an analytical parametrization of the non-perturbative transverse-momentum-dependent (TMD) parton distribution function of unpolarized quarks, extracted from Drell-Yan data using a combination of neural-network fitting and symbolic regression. A factorized neural network is trained directly against experimental cross-section data from fixed-target, Tevatron, RHIC, and LHC experiments at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, and symbolic regression is subsequently applied to each network component to discover compact analytical expressions. The final formula is selected from a Pareto front in the space of expression complexity and experimental $χ^2$, yielding a closed-form non-perturbative function with 9 free numerical constants that achieves $χ^2/\mathrm{ndf}=1.040$ over 482 data points. A non-trivial $x$-$b_T$ cross term is retained even under a sparsity prior that biases it toward zero, indicating a mild but genuine correlation between the longitudinal momentum fraction and the transverse momentum. This work demonstrates that symbolic regression is a viable tool for bridging flexible machine-learning fits and interpretable analytical TMD parametrizations, and opens a systematic path toward data-driven discovery of specific features of non-perturbative QCD.

New insights from the flavor dependence of quark transverse momentum distributions in the pion

We update our previous extraction of transverse momentum distributions of unpolarized quarks in the pion by implementing a more comprehensive description of theoretical uncertainties and, for the first time, by exploring possible differences among quark flavors. We extract such distributions from all available data for unpolarized pion-nucleus Drell-Yan processes, where the cross section is differential in the transverse momentum of the final lepton pair. The cross section involves transverse momentum distributions in the nucleon, that we consistently take from our previous studies.

Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off a tensor-polarized spin-1 target

We investigate the semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off a tensor-polarized spin-1 target, focusing on the production of an unpolarized hadron. The complete differential cross section is expressed in terms of 23 structure functions, which depend on the spin states of the target and the azimuthal modulations of the final-state hadron. Within the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework, we derive the hadronic tensor using quark-quark correlators and quark-gluon-quark correlators up to twist-3. At tree-level, 21 nonvanishing structure functions are obtained at the leading and subleading twist, expressed as convolutions of TMD parton distribution functions and TMD fragmentation functions. The measurement of these nonzero structure functions can be utilized to explore the tensor-polarized structure of spin-1 particles, offering insights into their internal dynamics.

Extraction of Dihadron Fragmentation Functions at NNLO with and without Neural Networks

We present a new extraction of unpolarized Dihadron Fragmentation Functions, which describe the probability density for an unpolarized parton to fragment into a $π^+ π^-$ pair. Our analysis is based on data from the BELLE collaboration. We improve on previous determinations in several key aspects: we employ state-of-the-art perturbative QCD calculations up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO); we limit the use of Monte Carlo event generators to estimating the relative contributions of different flavors, a necessary input due to the limited flavor sensitivity of the available data; and, in addition to a traditional fit based on a physics-informed functional form, we explore a Neural Network parametrization. This latter approach paves the way for more robust and flexible determinations of Dihadron Fragmentation Functions using machine learning techniques.

Spin 1 Transverse Momentum Dependent Tensor Structure Functions in CLAS12

We propose to analyze CLAS12 RG-C data to study the tensor transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) on deuteron data. The deuteron is the lightest nucleus with spin-1, in essence a weakly bound system of two spin-1/2 nucleons. However, one of the most intriguing characteristics of the deuteron is that the tensor polarized structure provides direct access to the quark and gluon distribution of light nuclear system, which cannot be naively constructed from the proton and neutron. We will study the tensor polarized structure functions with the Semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (SIDIS) $eD \arrow eP_{h}X$ and Inclusive processes in the available data on deuterated ammonia (ND3) target. We will perform the first ever SIDIS analysis extraction of the tensor structure functions, which can be interpreted in term of completely unexplored tensor polarized TMDs. Our analysis will focus on the extraction of the tensor structure functions b1 from inclusive process, and $F_{U(LL),T}$ and $F^{cos 2ϕ_{h}}_{U(LL)}$ from SIDIS. These last two structure functions carry information related to two tensor-polarized TMDs, $f_{1LL}$ and $h^{\perp}_{1LL}$. These initial exploratory measurements of tensor-polarized structure functions will enable the first extraction of spin-1 TMDs and motivate more precise future measurements.

Experimental Study of Tensor Structure Function of Deuteron

The deuteron is the lightest spin-1 nucleus, consisting of a weakly bound system of two spin-1/2 nucleons. One intriguing characteristic of the deuteron is the tensor polarized structure, which cannot be naively constructed combining the proton and neutron structure. The tensor structure of the deuteron provides unique insights into the quarks and gluons distributions and their dynamics within the nucleus. It can be studied experimentally through inclusive and semi-inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) of electrons on tensor polarized deuterons. One-dimensional (longitudinal-momentum-dependent) tensor structure functions are extracted from the inclusive DIS, whereas three-dimensional with additional transverse-momentum-dependent tensor structure functions are extracted from the semi-inclusive DIS. Experimentally, achieving high tensor polarization for such measurements has been a challenge. Significant progress has recently been made in enhancing the tensor polarization for polarized deuteron target, opening up a new window for experimental studies of the deuteron tensor structure. In this article, we discuss the tensor structure functions of the deuteron and the experimental schemes to extract these functions at Jefferson Lab, highlighting the potential measurements of the transverse-momentum-dependent tensor structure functions.

A Neural-Network Extraction of Unpolarised Transverse-Momentum-Dependent Distributions

We present the first extraction of transverse-momentum-dependent distributions of unpolarised quarks from experimental Drell-Yan data using neural networks to parametrise their nonperturbative part. We show that neural networks outperform traditional parametrisations providing a more accurate description of data. This work establishes the feasibility of using neural networks to explore the multi-dimensional partonic structure of hadrons and paves the way for more accurate determinations based on machine-learning techniques.

Flavor dependence of unpolarized quark Transverse Momentum Distributions from a global fit

We present an extraction of the unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions that takes into account possible differences between quark flavors and final-state hadrons. The extraction is based on experimental measurements from Drell-Yan processes and semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, whose combination is essential to distinguish flavor differences. The analysis is carried out at N$^3$LL accuracy. The extracted flavor-dependent distributions give a very good description of the data ($χ^2/N_{\rm dat} = 1.08$). The resulting uncertainties take fully into account also the uncertainties in the determination of the corresponding collinear distributions.

Exploring the three-dimensional momentum distribution of longitudinally polarized quarks in the proton

By analyzing experimental data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarized targets, we extract the transverse momentum dependence of the quark helicity distribution, i.e., the difference between the three-dimensional motion of quarks with polarization parallel or antiparallel to the longitudinal polarization of the parent hadron. We perform the analysis at next-to-leading (NLL) and next-to-next-to-leading (NNLL) perturbative accuracy. The quality of the fit is very good for both cases, reaching a $χ^2$ per number of data points equal to $1.11$ and $1.09$, respectively. Although the limited number of data points leads to significant uncertainties, the data are consistent with an interpretation in which the helicity distribution is narrower in transverse momentum than the unpolarized distribution.

Proton 3D reconstruction with T-odd TMD gluon densities

We present studies aimed at probing the 3D gluon content of the proton through spin-dependent TMD gluon densities, computed by means of the spectator-model approach. Our formalism incorporates a fit-based modulation function for the spectator mass, designed to capture longitudinal-momentum effects across a broad kinematic range. Special emphasis is placed on the time-reversal even Boer-Mulders and the time-reversal odd Sivers functions. Accurate understanding of these functions is crucial for conducting precise 3D analyses of nucleons, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts between the LHC and EIC Communities.

T-odd gluon distribution functions in a spectator model

We present a model calculation of T-odd transverse-momentum-dependent distributions of gluons in the nucleon. The model is based on the assumption that a nucleon can emit a gluon, and what remains after the emission is treated as a single spectator particle. This spectator particle is considered to be on-shell, but its mass is allowed to take a continuous range of values, described by a spectral function. The final-state interaction that is necessary to generate T-odd functions is modeled as the exchange of a single gluon between the spectator and the outgoing parton.

Signals of strong parity violation in deep inelastic scattering

We include strong parity-violating contributions to inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of longitudinally polarized leptons off an unpolarized target. At variance with standard results, we obtain nonvanishing parity-violating structure functions in the case of pure photon exchange. The addition of these strong parity-violating contributions improves the description of existing experimental data on DIS parity-violating asymmetries. We find the size of these contributions small but exhibiting a deviation from zero of about 1.5 $σ$. The associated $p$-value is 0.063, indicating that the probability of making an error by rejecting the hypothesis of no parity-violating contributions is 6.3\%, which is small but not negligible. Further improvement on the limit of the strong parity-violation can be expected from the future SoLID program at Jefferson Lab.

Spectator-model studies for spin-dependent gluon TMD PDFs at the LHC and EIC

We present novel analyses on accessing the 3D gluon content of the proton via spin-dependent TMD gluon densities, calculated through the spectator-model approach. Our formalism embodies a fit-based spectator-mass modulation function, suited to catch longitudinal-momentum effects in a wide kinematic range. Particular attention is paid to the time-reversal even Boer--Mulders and the time-reversal odd Sivers functions, whose accurate knowledge, needed to perform precise 3D analyses of nucleons, motivates synergies between LHC and EIC Communities.

The case for an EIC Theory Alliance: Theoretical Challenges of the EIC

We outline the physics opportunities provided by the Electron Ion Collider (EIC). These include the study of the parton structure of the nucleon and nuclei, the onset of gluon saturation, the production of jets and heavy flavor, hadron spectroscopy and tests of fundamental symmetries. We review the present status and future challenges in EIC theory that have to be addressed in order to realize this ambitious and impactful physics program, including how to engage a diverse and inclusive workforce. In order to address these many-fold challenges, we propose a coordinated effort involving theory groups with differing expertise is needed. We discuss the scientific goals and scope of such an EIC Theory Alliance.

Analogies between hadron-in-jet and dihadron fragmentation

We describe the formal analogies in the description of the inclusive production in hard processes of hadron pairs (based on dihadron fragmentation functions) and of a single hadron inside a jet (based on hadron-in-jet fragmentation functions). Since several observables involving dihadron fragmentation functions have been proposed in the past, we are able to suggest new interesting observables involving hadron-in-jet fragmentation functions, in lepton-hadron deep-inelastic scattering and hadronic collisions.

Towards leading-twist $T$-odd TMD gluon distributions

We present exploratory studies of the 3D proton tomography through polarized $T$-odd gluon TMDs at leading twist, obtained in a spectator-model framework. We embody in our approach a flexible parameterization for the spectator-mass spectral function, suited to catch both small- and moderate-$x$ effects. All these studies are relevant to unveil the gluon dynamics inside hadrons, which represents a core research line of studies at new-generation colliders, such as the Electron-Ion Collider, NICA-SPD, the High-Luminosity LHC, and the Forward Physics Facility.

Unpolarized Transverse Momentum Distributions from a global fit of Drell-Yan and Semi-Inclusive Deep-Inelastic Scattering data

We present an extraction of unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions based on more than two thousands data points from several experiments for two different processes: semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan production of lepton pairs. The baseline analysis is performed with a Monte Carlo replica method resumming large logarithms at N3LL accuracy. The resulting description of the data is very good ($χ^2/N_{\rm dat} = 1.06$). For semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, predictions for multiplicities are normalized by factors that cure the discrepancy with data introduced by higher-order perturbative corrections.
