Menu Pricing of Large Language Models

We develop a framework for the optimal pricing and product design of LLMs in which a provider sells menus of token budgets to users who differ in their valuations across a continuum of tasks. Under a homogeneous production technology, we show that users' high-dimensional type profiles are summarized by a scalar index, reducing the seller's problem to one-dimensional screening. The optimal mechanism takes the form of committed-spend contracts: buyers pay for a budget that they allocate across token classes priced at marginal cost. We extend the analysis to environments with multiple differentiated models and to competition between a proprietary leader and an open-source fringe, showing that competitive pressure reshapes both the intensive and extensive margins of compute provision. Each element of our theory (token-budget menus, maximum- and minimum-spend plans, multi-model versioning, and linear API pricing) has a direct counterpart in the observed pricing practices of providers such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and GitHub.

How Do Digital Advertising Auctions Impact Product Prices?

We present a model of digital advertising with three key features: (i) advertisers can reach consumers on and off a platform, (ii) additional data enhances the value of advertiser-consumer matches, and (iii) bidding follows auction-like mechanisms. We contrast data-augmented auctions, which leverage the platform's data advantage to improve match quality, and managed campaign mechanisms that automate match formation and price-setting. The platform-optimal mechanism is a managed campaign that conditions on-platform prices for sponsored products on the off-platform prices set by all advertisers. This mechanism yields the efficient on-platform allocation but inefficient off-platform allocations due to high product prices; it attains the vertical integration profit for the platform and advertisers; and it increases off-platform product prices and decreases consumer surplus, relative to data-augmented auctions.

Data, Competition, and Digital Platforms

We analyze digital markets where a monopolist platform uses data to match multiproduct sellers with heterogeneous consumers who can purchase both on and off the platform. The platform sells targeted ads to sellers that recommend their products to consumers and reveals information to consumers about their values. The revenue-optimal mechanism is a managed advertising campaign that matches products and preferences efficiently. In equilibrium, sellers offer higher qualities at lower unit prices on than off the platform. Privacy-respecting data-governance rules such as organic search results or federated learning can lead to welfare gains for consumers.

Information Design with Elicitation and Strategic Coordination

We study linear-quadratic games of incomplete information with Gaussian uncertainty, where each player's payoff depends on a privately observed type and a common state. The designer observes the state, elicits types, and sells action recommendations. We characterize all implementable mechanisms with Gaussian joint distributions of actions and fundamentals, and identify the players-optimal, consumer-optimal, and revenue-maximizing designs. In games of strategic complements (substitutes), these optimal mechanisms maximally correlate (anticorrelate) players' actions. When type uncertainty is large, recommendations become deterministic linear functions of the state and reports, but remain only partially revealing.

The Economics of Social Data

A data intermediary acquires signals from individual consumers regarding their preferences. The intermediary resells the information in a product market wherein firms and consumers tailor their choices to the demand data. The social dimension of the individual data -- whereby a consumer's data are predictive of others' behavior -- generates a data externality that can reduce the intermediary's cost of acquiring the information. The intermediary optimally preserves the privacy of consumers' identities if and only if doing so increases social surplus. This policy enables the intermediary to capture the total value of the information as the number of consumers becomes large.

Selling Information in Competitive Environments

Data buyers compete in a game of incomplete information about which a single data seller owns some payoff-relevant information. The seller faces a joint information- and mechanism-design problem: deciding which information to sell, while eliciting the buyers' types and imposing payments. We derive the welfare- and revenue-optimal mechanisms for a class of games with binary actions and states. Our results highlight the critical properties of selling information in competitive environments: (i) the negative externalities arising from buyer competition increase the profitability of recommending the correct action to one buyer exclusively; (ii) for the buyers to follow the seller's recommendations, the degree of exclusivity must be limited; (iii) the buyers' obedience constraints also limit the distortions in the allocation of information introduced by a monopolist seller; (iv) as competition becomes fiercer, these limitations become more severe, weakening the impact of market power on the allocation of information.

The Optimality of Upgrade Pricing

We consider a multiproduct monopoly pricing model. We provide sufficient conditions under which the optimal mechanism can be implemented via upgrade pricing -- a menu of product bundles that are nested in the strong set order. Our approach exploits duality methods to identify conditions on the distribution of consumer types under which (a) each product is purchased by the same set of buyers as under separate monopoly pricing (though the transfers can be different), and (b) these sets are nested. We exhibit two distinct sets of sufficient conditions. The first set of conditions is given by a weak version of monotonicity of types and virtual values, while maintaining a regularity assumption, i.e., that the product-by-product revenue curves are single-peaked. The second set of conditions establishes the optimality of upgrade pricing for type spaces with monotone marginal rates of substitution (MRS) -- the relative preference ratios for any two products are monotone across types. The monotone MRS condition allows us to relax the earlier regularity assumption. Under both sets of conditions, we fully characterize the product bundles and prices that form the optimal upgrade pricing menu. Finally, we show that, if the consumer's types are monotone, the seller can equivalently post a vector of single-item prices: upgrade pricing and separate pricing are equivalent.
