Letter Of Intent for a future $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ experiment at the High Intensity Muon Beam facility at PSI

Searches for charged lepton flavor violation in the muon sector stand out among the most sensitive and clean probes for physics beyond the Standard Model. Currently, $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ experiments provide the best constraints in this field for a wide range of models while, in the coming years, new experiments investigating the processes of $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \mathrm{e}^+ \mathrm{e}^-$ and $\mu \to \mathrm{e}$ conversion in the nuclear field are anticipated to reach comparable or higher sensitivities. The High-Intensity Muon Beam (HIMB) facility at PSI, which is expected to deliver muon beam intensities up to two orders of magnitude higher than the existing beam lines, offers a unique opportunity to significantly enhance the sensitivity of $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ searches. The discovery potential could be substantially boosted and a sensitivity comparable to that of all the other projects could be reestablished, which is essential for discriminating among competing new-physics scenarios should an observation occur in any of the channels. In this document, we express our interest in developing a $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ experimental program at HIMB, with the goal of improving, within the next decade, the sensitivity of the $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+ \gamma$ search by more than one order of magnitude relative to the expected final result of the current leading experiment, MEG II. This effort would ensure that PSI retains its leadership in this field.

The Mu3e Data Acquisition

The Mu3e experiment aims to find or exclude the lepton flavour violating decay $μ^+\to e^+e^-e^+$ with a sensitivity of one in 10$^{16}$ muon decays. The first phase of the experiment is currently under construction at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI, Switzerland), where beams with up to 10$^8$ muons per second are available. The detector will consist of an ultra-thin pixel tracker made from High-Voltage Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (HV-MAPS), complemented by scintillating tiles and fibres for precise timing measurements. The experiment produces about 100 Gbit/s of zero-suppressed data which are transported to a filter farm using a network of FPGAs and fast optical links. On the filter farm, tracks and three-particle vertices are reconstructed using highly parallel algorithms running on graphics processing units, leading to a reduction of the data to 100 Mbyte/s for mass storage and offline analysis. The paper introduces the system design and hardware implementation of the Mu3e data acquisition and filter farm.

PANGU: A High Resolution Gamma-ray Space Telescope

We describe the instrument concept of a high angular resolution telescope dedicated to the sub-GeV (from $\gtrsim$10 MeV to $\gtrsim$1 GeV) gamma-ray photon detection. This mission, named PANGU (PAir-productioN Gamma-ray Unit), has been suggested as a candidate for the joint small mission between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS). A wide range of topics of both astronomy and fundamental physics can be attacked with PANGU, covering Galactic and extragalactic cosmic-ray physics, extreme physics of a variety of extended (e.g. supernova remnants, galaxies, galaxy clusters) and compact (e.g. black holes, pulsars, gamma-ray bursts) objects, solar and terrestrial gamma-ray phenomena, and searching for dark matter decay and/or annihilation signature etc. The unprecedented point spread function can be achieved with a pair-production telescope with a large number of thin active tracking layers to precisely reconstruct the pair-produced electron and positron tracks. Scintillating fibers or thin silicon micro-strip detectors are suitable technology for such a tracker. The energy measurement is achieved by measuring the momentum of the electrons and positrons through a magnetic field. The innovated spectrometer approach provides superior photon pointing resolution, and is particular suitable in the sub-GeV range. The level of tracking precision makes it possible to measure the polarization of gamma rays, which would open up a new frontier in gamma-ray astronomy. The frequent full-sky survey at sub-GeV with PANGU's large field of view and significantly improved point spread function would provide crucial information to GeV-TeV astrophysics for current/future missions including Fermi, DAMPE, HERD, and CTA, and other multi-wavelength telescopes.

A Monte Carlo for POLarized (semi-inclusive) Deep Inelastic Scattering

POLDIS is a Monte Carlo program for polarized (semi-inclusive) deep inelastic scattering (DIS). Unpolarized DIS events are generated with the existing lepto-production event generators LEPTO for DIS and AROMA for Heavy Flavor production. The relevant spin asymmetries are computed at partonic level to first order in alpha_s for each generated event, and are then convoluted with the corresponding ratio between the polarized and unpolarized parton distribution functions (i.e. parton polarization). This procedure provides a polarization weight for each event. The average of these polarization weights gives the polarized cross section spin-asymmetry for the generated sample. The code consists of a set of subroutines to be linked with LEPTO and/or AROMA.
