$H$-convergence and $\Gamma$-convergence in the Riesz fractional setting: the nonlinear case

This paper concerns the $H$-convergence of nonlinear nonlocal monotone operators defined through the Riesz fractional gradient and divergence. We show that the $H$-convergence in this nonlocal framework is equivalent to the $H$-convergence of the corresponding local one. As a consequence, we obtain a $H$-compactness result for a suitable class of nonlocal monotone operators. We then study the $\Gamma$-convergence of nonlocal energy functionals associated with the subclass of \emph{conservative} monotone operators, proving that it is equivalent to the $\Gamma$-convergence of the corresponding local energies. A key ingredient is a new uniqueness result for the integral representation of both local and nonlocal functionals. As a by-product, we obtain the $\Gamma$-compactness of the class of nonlocal energies under consideration. Finally, we show the equivalence between the $H$-convergence of nonlocal conservative monotone operators and the $\Gamma$-convergence of the associated energy functionals.

A Brunn-Minkowski inequality for Schr\"odinger operators with Kato class potentials

In this paper we prove a Brunn-Minkowski inequality for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a Schr\"odinger type operator $\mathcal{H}_V:=-\operatorname{div}(A\nabla)+V$, where $V$ is convex and Kato decomposable, using the trace class property of the generated semigroup. As a consequence, we obtain the log-concavity of the ground state using the ultracontractivity of the semigroup, and also the strong log-concavity under additional assumptions on $\Omega$ and $V$.

On the approximation of finite perimeter sets

We prove that if $\Omega\subseteq\mathbb{R}^N$ is a set with finite perimeter with $\mathscr{H}^{N-1}(\partial \Omega\setminus\partial^* \Omega)=0$, then any set of finite perimeter $E\subseteq\mathbb{R}^N$ can be approximated by a polyhedral or smooth bounded set $F$ in such a way that both the total perimeter of $E$ and the perimeter of $E$ inside $\Omega$ are approximated by those of $F$, and the boundary of $F$ has negligible intersection with the boundary of $\Omega$. In addition, we address the approximation for perimeter and volume with densities, and we present counterexamples illustrating the sharpness of our assumptions. Our constructions rely on a technical result that replaces $E$ with a set $F$ which agrees with $E$ and has the same boundary inside $\Omega$, while sharing no common boundary with $\Omega$, and does so without substantially altering the perimeter or the volume of the original set.

The Polya-Szego principle in the fractional setting: a glimpse on nonlocal functional inequalities

In this survey we present the fractional Polya Szego principle and its main consequences in the study of nonlocal functional inequalities. In particular, we show how symmetrization methods work also in the fractional setting and yield sharp results such as isoperimetric type inequalities. Further developments including stability issues and generalizations in the anisotropic and the Gaussian setting are also discussed.

On the optimization of the Robin eigenvalues in some classes of polygons

Given the eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian with Robin boundary conditions, (with $\beta\in\R\setminus\{0\}$ the Robin parameter), we consider shape minimization problems if $\beta>0$ and shape maximization problems if $\beta<0$. Both problems are settled in a suitable class of generalized polygons with an upper bound on the number of sides, under either perimeter or volume constraint.

$H$-compactness for nonlocal linear operators in fractional divergence form

We study the $H$-convergence of nonlocal linear operators in fractional divergence form, where the oscillations of the matrices are prescribed outside the reference domain. Our compactness argument bypasses the failure of the classical localisation techniques that mismatch with the nonlocal nature of the operators involved. If symmetry is also assumed, we extend the equivalence between the $H$-convergence of the operators and the $\Gamma$-convergence of the associated energies.

Stability of the Gaussian Faber-Krahn inequality

We prove a quantitative version of the Gaussian Faber-Krahn type inequality proved by Betta, Chiacchio and Ferone for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator, estimating the deficit in terms of the Gaussian Fraenkel asymmetry. As expected, the multiplicative constant only depends on the prescribed Gaussian measure.

The viscoelastic paradox in a nonlinear Kelvin-Voigt type model of dynamic fracture

In this paper we consider a dynamic model of fracture for viscoelastic materials, in which the constitutive relation, involving the Cauchy stress and the strain tensors, is given in an implicit nonlinear form. We prove the existence of a solution to the associated viscoelastic dynamic system on a prescribed time-dependent cracked domain via a discretisation-in-time argument. Moreover, we show that such a solution satisfies an energy-dissipation balance in which the energy used to increase the crack does not appear. As a consequence, in analogy to the linear case this nonlinear model exhibits the so-called viscoelastic paradox.

Local Regularity of very weak $s$-harmonic functions via fractional difference quotients

The aim of this paper is to give a new proof that any very weak $s$-harmonic function $u$ in the unit ball $B$ is smooth. As a first step, we improve the local summability properties of $u$. Then, we exploit a suitable version of the difference quotient method tailored to get rid of the singularity of the integral kernel and gain Sobolev regularity and local linear estimates of the $H^{s}_{\rm loc}$ norm of $u$. Finally, by applying more standard methods, such as elliptic regularity and Schauder estimates, we reach real analyticity of $u$. Up to the authors' knowledge, the difference quotient techniques are new.

Gamma-convergence of fractional Gaussian perimeter

We prove the $Γ$-convergence of the renormalised fractional Gaussian $s$-perimeter to the Gaussian perimeter as $s\to 1^-$. Our definition of fractional perimeter comes from that of the fractional powers of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck operator given via Bochner subordination formula. As a typical feature of the Gaussian setting, the constant appearing in front of the $Γ$-limit does not depend on the dimension.

Asymptotics of the $s$-fractional Gaussian perimeter as $s\to 0^+$

We study the asymptotic behaviour of the renormalised $s$-fractional Gaussian perimeter of a set $E$ inside a domain $Ω$ as $s\to 0^+$. Contrary to the Euclidean case, as the Gaussian measure is finite, the shape of the set at infinity does not matter, but, surprisingly, the limit set function is never additive.

A note on Riemann-Liouville fractional Sobolev spaces

Taking inspiration from a recent paper by Bergounioux, Leaci, Nardi and Tomarelli we study the Riemann-Liouville fractional Sobolev space $W^{s, p}_{RL, a+}(I)$, for $I = (a, b)$ for some $a, b \in \mathbb{R}, a < b$, $s \in (0, 1)$ and $p \in [1, \infty]$; that is, the space of functions $u \in L^{p}(I)$ such that the left Riemann-Liouville $(1 - s)$-fractional integral $I_{a+}^{1 - s}[u]$ belongs to $W^{1, p}(I)$. We prove that the space of functions of bounded variation and the fractional Sobolev space, $BV(I)$ and $W^{s, 1}(I)$, continuously embed into $W^{s, 1}_{RL, a+}(I)$. In addition, we define the space of functions with left Riemann-Liouville $s$-fractional bounded variation, $BV^{s}_{RL,a+}(I)$, as the set of functions $u \in L^{1}(I)$ such that $I^{1 - s}_{a+}[u] \in BV(I)$, and we analyze some fine properties of these functions. Finally, we prove some fractional Sobolev-type embedding results and we analyze the case of higher order Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives.

Local minimizers and Gamma-convergence for nonlocal perimeters in Carnot Groups

We prove the local minimality of halfspaces in Carnot groups for a class of nonlocal functionals usually addressed as nonlocal perimeters. Moreover, in a class of Carnot groups in which the De Giorgi's rectifiability Theorem holds, we provide a lower bound for the $Γ$-liminf of the rescaled energy in terms of the horizontal perimeter.

Local density of Caputo-stationary functions of any order

We show that any given function can be approximated with arbitrary precision by solutions of linear, time-fractional equations of any prescribed order. This extends a recent result by Claudia Bucur, which was obtained for time-fractional derivatives of order less than one, to the case of any fractional order of differentiation. In addition, our result applies also to the $ψ$-Caputo-stationary case, and it will provide one of the building blocks of a forthcoming paper in which we will establish general approximation results by operators of any order involving anisotropic superpositions of classical, space-fractional and time-fractional diffusions.

Local density of solutions of time and space fractional equations

We prove that any given function can be smoothly approximated by functions lying in the kernel of a linear operator involving at least one fractional component. The setting in which we work is very general, since it takes into account anomalous diffusion, with possible fractional components in both space and time. The operators studied comprise the case of the sum of classical and fractional Laplacians, possibly of different orders, in the space variables, and classical or fractional derivatives in the time variables. This type of approximation results shows that space-fractional and time-fractional equations exhibit a variety of solutions which is much richer and more abundant than in the case of classical diffusion.
