Non-persistence of strongly isolated singularities, and geometric applications

We obtain a generic regularity result for stationary integral $n$-varifolds with only strongly isolated singularities inside $N$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds, in absence of any restriction on the dimension ($n\geq 2$) and codimension. As a special case, we prove that for any $n\geq 2$ and any compact $(n+1)$-dimensional manifold $M$ the following holds: for a generic choice of the background metric $g$ all stationary integral $n$-varifolds in $(M,g)$ will either be entirely smooth or have at least one singular point that is not strongly isolated. In other words, only ``more complicated'' singularities may possibly persist. This implies, for instance, a generic finiteness result for the class of all closed minimal hypersurfaces of area at most $4\pi^2-\varepsilon$ (for any $\varepsilon>0$) in nearly round four-spheres: we can thus give precise answers, in the negative, to the questions of persistence of the Clifford football and of Hsiang's hyperspheres in nearly round metrics. The aforementioned main regularity result is achieved as a consequence of the fine analysis of the Fredholm index of the Jacobi operator for such varifolds: we prove on the one hand an exact formula relating that number to the Morse indices of the conical links at the singular points, while on the other hand we show that the same number is non-negative for all such varifolds if the ambient metric is generic.

Index growth not imputable to topology

We employ partitioning methods, in the spirit of Montiel--Ros but here recast for general actions of compact Lie groups, to prove effective lower bounds on the Morse index of certain families of closed minimal hypersurfaces in the round four-dimensional sphere, and of free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in the Euclidean four-dimensional ball. Our analysis reveals, in particular, phenomena of linear index growth for sequences of minimal hypersurfaces of fixed topological type, in strong contrast to the three-dimensional scenario.

Minimal hypertori in the four-dimensional sphere

We prove that the four-dimensional round sphere contains a minimally embedded hypertorus, as well as infinitely many, pairwise non-isometric, immersed ones. Our analysis also yields infinitely many, pairwise non-isometric, minimally embedded hyperspheres and thus provides a self-contained solution to Chern's spherical Bernstein conjecture in dimensions four and six.

Disc stackings and their Morse index

We construct free boundary minimal disc stackings, with any number of strata, in the three-dimensional Euclidean unit ball, and prove uniform, linear lower and upper bounds on the Morse index of all such surfaces. Among other things, our work implies for any positive integer $k$ the existence of $k$-tuples of distinct, pairwise non-congruent, embedded free boundary minimal surfaces all having the same topological type. In addition, since we prove that the equivariant Morse index of any such free boundary minimal stacking, with respect to its maximal symmetry group, is bounded from below by (the integer part of) half the number of layers, it follows that any possible realization of such surfaces via an equivariant min-max method would need to employ sweepouts with an arbitrarily large number of parameters. This also shows that it is only for $N=2$ and $N=3$ layers that free boundary minimal disc stackings can be obtained by means of one-dimensional mountain pass schemes.

A Note about Isotopy and Concordance of Positive Scalar Curvature Metrics on Compact Manifolds with Boundary

We study notions of isotopy and concordance for Riemannian metrics on manifolds with boundary and, in particular, we introduce two variants of the concept of minimal concordance, the weaker one naturally arising when considering certain spaces of metrics defined by a suitable spectral ''stability'' condition. We develop some basic tools and obtain a rather complete picture in the case of surfaces.

Constrained deformations of positive scalar curvature metrics, II

We prove that various spaces of constrained positive scalar curvature metrics on compact 3-manifolds with boundary, when not empty, are contractible. The constraints we mostly focus on are given in terms of local conditions on the mean curvature of the boundary, and our treatment includes both the mean-convex and the minimal case. We then discuss the implications of these results on the topology of different subspaces of asymptotically flat initial data sets for the Einstein field equations in general relativity.

Spectral estimates for free boundary minimal surfaces via Montiel-Ros partitioning methods

We adapt and extend the Montiel-Ros methodology to compact manifolds with boundary, allowing for mixed (including oblique) boundary conditions and also accounting for the action of a finite group $G$ together with an additional twisting homomorphism $\sigma\colon G\to\operatorname O(1)$. We then apply this machinery in order to obtain quantitative lower and upper bounds on the growth rate of the Morse index of free boundary minimal surfaces with respect to the topological data (i. e. the genus and the number of boundary components) of the surfaces in question. In particular, we compute the exact values of the equivariant Morse index and nullity for two infinite families of examples, with respect to their maximal symmetry groups, and thereby derive explicit two-sided linear bounds when the equivariance constraint is lifted.

Constrained deformations of positive scalar curvature metrics

We present a series of results concerning the interplay between the scalar curvature of a manifold and the mean curvature of its boundary. In particular, we give a complete topological characterization of those compact 3-manifolds that support Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature and mean-convex boundary and, in any such case, we prove that the associated moduli space of metrics is path-connected. The methods we employ are flexible enough to allow the construction of continuous paths of positive scalar curvature metrics with minimal boundary, and to derive similar conclusions in that context as well. Our work relies on a combination of earlier fundamental contributions by Gromov-Lawson and Schoen-Yau, on the smoothing procedure designed by Miao, and on the interplay of Perelman's Ricci flow with surgery and conformal deformation techniques introduced by Codá Marques in dealing with the closed case.

Inequivalent complexity criteria for free boundary minimal surfaces

We obtain a series of results in the global theory of free boundary minimal surfaces, which in particular provide a rather complete picture for the way different complexity criteria, such as area, topology and Morse index compare, beyond the regime where effective estimates are at disposal.

Contractibility results for certain spaces of Riemannian metrics on the disc

We provide a general contractibility criterion for subsets of Riemannian metrics on the disc. For instance, this result applies to the space of metrics that have positive Gauss curvature and make the boundary circle convex (or geodesic). The same conclusion is not known in any dimension $n\geq 3$, and (by analogy with the closed case) is actually expected to be false for many values of $n\geq 4$.

Bubbling analysis and geometric convergence results for free boundary minimal surfaces

We investigate the limit behaviour of sequences of free boundary minimal hypersurfaces with bounded index and volume, by presenting a detailed blow-up analysis near the points where curvature concentration occurs. Thereby, we derive a general quantization identity for the total curvature functional, valid in ambient dimension less than eight and applicable to possibly improper limit hypersurfaces. In dimension three, this identity can be combined with the Gauss-Bonnet theorem to provide a constraint relating the topology of the free boundary minimal surfaces in a converging sequence, of their limit, and of the bubbles or half-bubbles that occur as blow-up models. We present various geometric applications of these tools, including a description of the behaviour of index one free boundary minimal surfaces inside a 3-manifold of non-negative scalar curvature and strictly mean convex boundary. In particular, in the case of compact, simply connected, strictly mean convex domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$ unconditional convergence occurs for all topological types except the disk and the annulus, and in those cases the possible degenerations are classified.

Geometric convergence results for closed minimal surfaces via bubbling analysis

We present some geometric applications, of global character, of the bubbling analysis developed by Buzano and Sharp for closed minimal surfaces, obtaining smooth multiplicity one convergence results under upper bounds on the Morse index and suitable lower bounds on either the genus or the area. For instance, we show that given any Riemannian metric of positive scalar curvature on the three-dimensional sphere the class of embedded minimal surfaces of index one and genus $\gamma$ is sequentially compact for any $\gamma\geq 1$. Furthemore, we give a quantitative description of how the genus drops as a sequence of minimal surfaces converges smoothly, with mutiplicity $m\geq 1$, away from finitely many points where curvature concentration may happen. This result exploits a sharp estimate on the multiplicity of convergence in terms of the number of ends of the bubbles that appear in the process.

Min-max embedded geodesic lines in asymptotically conical surfaces

We employ min-max methods to construct uncountably many, geometrically distinct, properly embedded geodesic lines in any asymptotically conical surface of non-negative scalar curvature, a setting where minimization schemes are doomed to fail. Our construction provides control of the Morse index of the geodesic lines we produce, which will be always less or equal than one (with equality under suitable curvature or genericity assumptions), as well as of their precise asymptotic behaviour. In fact, we can prove that in any such surface for every couple of opposite half-lines there exists an embedded geodesic line whose two ends are asymptotic, in a suitable sense, to those half-lines.

Compactness analysis for free boundary minimal hypersurfaces

We investigate compactness phenomena involving free boundary minimal hypersurfaces in Riemannian manifolds of dimension less than eight. We provide natural geometric conditions that ensure strong one-sheeted graphical subsequential convergence, discuss the limit behaviour when multi-sheeted convergence happens and derive various consequences in terms of finiteness and topological control.
