Gauge Covariant Link Formulation of Twisted N=D=4 and N=4 D=5 Super Yang-Mills on a Lattice

We propose a lattice formulation of four dimensional super Yang-Mills model with a twisted N=4 supersymmetry in a manifestly gauge covariant manner. The formulation we employ here is a four dimensional extension of the manifestly gauge covariant method which was developed in our proposals of Dirac-Kahler twisted N=D=2 and N=4 D=3 super Yang-Mills on a lattice. Twisted N=4 supersymmetry algebra is geometrically realized on a four dimensional lattice with link supercharges and the use of link (anti-)commutators. Employing Grassmann parameters with link nature, we explicitly show that the resulting super Yang-Mills action is invariant under all the supercharges on a lattice without chiral fermion problems. As a group and algebraic interpretation of the link approach, we show that promoting bosonic supercovariant derivatives to their exponentials consistently with the lattice Leibniz rule naturally gives rise to the notion of gauge covariant link (anti-)commutators. This can be regarded as a fermionic decomposition of a Lie group element, which may provide a new methodology in super Lie group and super Lie algebra. We also provide a five dimensional lift-up of the formulation with exact N=4 SUSY invariance on a five dimensional lattice.

Simplicial Gravity with Coordinates

We present a formulation of Regge Calculus where arbitrary coordinates are associated to each vertex of a simplicial complex and the degrees of freedom are given by the metric on each simplex. The lengths of the edges are thus determined and are left invariant under arbitrary transformations of the discrete set of coordinates, provided the metric transforms accordingly. Invariance under coordinate transformations entails tensor calculus and our formulation follows closely the usual formalism of the continuum theory. The definitions of parallel transport, Christoffel symbol, covariant derivatives and Riemann curvature tensor follow in a rather natural way. In this correspondence Einstein action becomes Regge action with the deficit angle $θ$ replaced by $\sin θ$. The correspondence with the continuum theory can be extended to actions with higher powers of the curvature tensor, to the vielbein formalism and to the coupling of gravity with matter fields (scalars, fermionic fields including spin $3/2$ fields and gauge fields) which are then determined unambiguously and discussed in the paper. An action on the simplicial lattice for $N=1$ supergravity in $4$ dimensions is derived in this context. Another relavant result is that Yang-mills actions on a simplicial lattice consist, even in absence of gravity, of two plaquettes terms, unlike the one plaquette Wilson action on the hypercubic lattice. An attempt is also made to formulate a discrete differential calculus to include differential forms of higher order and the gauging of free differential algebras in this scheme. However this leads to form products that do not satisfy associativity and distributive law with respect to the $d$ operator. A proper formulation of theories that contain higher order differential forms in the context of Regge Calculus is then still lacking.

Covariant hamiltonian for gravity coupled to $p$-forms

We review the covariant canonical formalism initiated by D'Adda, Nelson and Regge in 1985, and extend it to include a definition of form-Poisson brackets (FPB) for geometric theories coupled to $p$-forms, gauging free differential algebras. The form-Legendre transformation and the form-Hamilton equations are derived from a $d$-form Lagrangian with $p$-form dynamical fields $ϕ$. Momenta are defined as derivatives of the Lagrangian with respect to the "velocities" $dϕ$ and no preferred time direction is used. Action invariance under infinitesimal form-canonical transformations can be studied in this framework, and a generalized Noether theorem is derived, both for global and local symmetries. We apply the formalism to vielbein gravity in $d=3$ and $d=4$. In the $d=3$ theory we can define form-Dirac brackets, and use an algorithmic procedure to construct the canonical generators for local Lorentz rotations and diffeomorphisms. In $d=4$ the canonical analysis is carried out using FPB, since the definition of form-Dirac brackets is problematic. Lorentz generators are constructed, while diffeomorphisms are generated by the Lie derivative. A "doubly covariant" hamiltonian formalism is presented, allowing to maintain manifest Lorentz covariance at every stage of the Legendre transformation. The idea is to take curvatures as "velocities" in the definition of momenta.

An Alternative Lattice Field Theory Formulation Inspired by Lattice Supersymmetry -Summary of the Formulation-

We propose a lattice field theory formulation which overcomes some fundamental difficulties in realizing exact supersymmetry on the lattice. The Leibniz rule for the difference operator can be recovered by defining a new product on the lattice, the star product, and the chiral fermion species doublers degrees of freedom can be avoided consistently. This framework is general enough to formulate non-supersymmetric lattice field theory without chiral fermion problem. This lattice formulation has a nonlocal nature and is essentially equivalent to the corresponding continuum theory. We can show that the locality of the star product is recovered exponentially in the continuum limit. Possible regularization procedures are proposed. The associativity of the product and the lattice translational invariance of the formulation will be discussed.

An Alternative Lattice Field Theory Formulation Inspired by Lattice Supersymmetry

We propose an unconventional formulation of lattice field theories which is quite general, although originally motivated by the quest of exact lattice supersymmetry. Two long standing problems have a solution in this context: 1) Each degree of freedom on the lattice corresponds to $2^d$ degrees of freedom in the continuum, but all these doublers have (in the case of fermions) the same chirality and can be either identified, thus removing the degeneracy, or, in some theories with extended supersymmetry, identified with different members of the same supermultiplet. 2) The derivative operator, defined on the lattice as a suitable periodic function of the lattice momentum, is an addittive and conserved quantity, thus assuring that the Leibnitz rule is satisfied. This implies that the product of two fields on the lattice is replaced by a non-local "star product" which is however in general non-associative. Associativity of the "star product" poses strong restrictions on the form of the lattice derivative operator (which becomes the inverse gudermannian function of the lattice momentum) and has the consequence that the degrees of freedom of the lattice theory and of the continuum theory are in one-to-one correspondence, so that the two theories are eventually equivalent. Regularization of the ultraviolet divergences on the lattice is not associated to the lattice spacing, which does not act as a regulator, but may be obtained by a one parameter deformation of the lattice derivative, thus preserving the lattice structure even in the limit of infinite momentum cutoff. However this regularization breaks gauge invariance and a gauge invariant regularization within the lattice formulation is still lacking.

Quaternion based generalization of Chern-Simons theories in arbitrary dimensions

A generalization of Chern-Simons gauge theory is formulated in any dimension and arbitrary gauge group where gauge fields and gauge parameters are differential forms of any degree. The quaternion algebra structure of this formulation is shown to be equivalent to a three Z(2)-gradings structure, thus clarifying the quaternion role in a previous formulation.

Exact Lattice Supersymmetry at the Quantum Level for $N=2$ Wess-Zumino Models in 1- and 2-Dimensions

Supersymmetric lattice Ward-Takahashi identities are investigated perturbatively up to two-loop corrections for super doubler approach of $N=2$ lattice Wess-Zumino models in 1- and 2-dimensions. In this approach notorious chiral fermion doublers are treated as physical particles and momentum conservation is modified in such a way that lattice Leibniz rule is satisfied. The two major difficulties to keep exact lattice supersymmetry are overcome. This formulation defines, however, nonlocal field theory. Nevertheless we confirm that exact supersymmetry on the lattice is realized for all supercharges at the quantum level. Delicate issues of associativity are also discussed.

Summary of Super Doubler Approach on Exact Lattice Supersymmetry

We have proposed a lattice SUSY formulation which we may call super doubler approach, where chiral fermion species doublers and their bosonic counter parts are either identified as super partners or truncated by chiral conditions. We claim that the super symmetry is exactly kept on the lattice. However the formulation is nonlocal and breaks lattice translational invariance. We argue that these features cause no fundamental difficulties in the continuum limit. Although a naive version of this formulation breaks associativity of the product of fields we have found a modified super doubler approach that recovers the associativity and is applicable to super Yang-Mills theory. It turns out that this formulation is essentially equivalent to the continuum formulation and thus keeps all the symmetry exact even at a finite lattice constant. Inspired by this formulation we propose a non-local lattice field theory formulation which is free of chiral fermion problem and has the same exact lattice symmetry as continuum theory.

Exact Lattice Supersymmetry at the Quantum Level for N=2 Wess-Zumino models in Lower Dimensions

We have recently proposed a new lattice SUSY formulation which has exact lattice supersymmetry for Wess-Zumino models in one and two dimensions for all N=2 supercharges. This formulation is non-local in the coordinate space but the difference operator satisfies the Leibniz rule on the newly defined star product. Here we show that this lattice supersymmetry is kept exact at the quantum level by investigating Ward-Takahashi identities up to two loop level.

Species Doublers as Super Multiplets in Lattice Supersymmetry: Chiral Conditions of Wess-Zumino Model for D=N=2

We propose an algebraic lattice supersymmetry formulation which has an exact supersymmetry on the lattice. We show how lattice version of chiral conditions can be imposed to satisfy an exact lattice supersymmetry algebra. The species doublers of chiral fermions and the corresponding bosonic counterparts can be accommodated to fit into chiral supermultiplets of lattice supersymmetry and thus lattice chiral fermion problem does not appear. We explicitly show how N=2 Wess-Zumino model in one and two dimensions can be formulated to keep exact supersymmetry for all super charges on the lattice. The momentum representation of N=2 lattice chiral sypersymmetry algebra has lattice periodicity and thus momentum conservation should be modified to a lattice version of sine momentum conservation, which generates nonlocal interactions and leads to a loss of lattice translational invariance. It is shown that the nonlocality is mild and the translational invariance is recovered in the continuum limit. In the coordinate representation a new type of product is defined and the difference operator satisfies Leibnitz rule and an exact lattice supersymmetry is realized on this product.

Species Doublers as Super Multiplet Partners in Lattice Supersymmetry

We propose a new lattice superfield formalism in momentum representation which accommodates species doublers of the lattice fermions and their bosonic counterparts as super multiplets. We explicitly show that one dimensional $N=2$ model with interactions has exact supersymmetry on the lattice for all super charges with lattice momentum. In coordinate representation the finite difference operator is made to satisfy Leibnitz rule by introducing a non local product, the "star" product, and the exact lattice supersymmetry is realized. Supersymmetric Ward identities are shown to be satisfied at one loop level.

Species Doublers as Super Multiplets in Lattice Supersymmetry: Exact Supersymmetry with Interactions for D=1 N=2

We propose a new lattice superfield formalism in momentum representation which accommodates species doublers of the lattice fermions and their bosonic counterparts as super multiplets. We explicitly show that one dimensional N=2 model with interactions has exact Lie algebraic supersymmetry on the lattice for all super charges. In coordinate representation the finite difference operator is made to satisfy Leibnitz rule by introducing a non local product, the ``star'' product, and the exact lattice supersymmetry is realized. The standard momentum conservation is replaced on the lattice by the conservation of the sine of the momentum, which plays a crucial role in the formulation. Half lattice spacing structure is essential for the one dimensional model and the lattice supersymmetry transformation can be identified as a half lattice spacing translation combined with alternating sign structure. Invariance under finite translations and locality in the continuum limit are explicitly investigated and shown to be recovered. Supersymmetric Ward identities are shown to be satisfied at one loop level. Lie algebraic lattice supersymmetry algebra of this model suggests a close connection with Hopf algebraic exactness of the link approach formulation of lattice supersymmetry.

Lattice supersymmetry with Hopf algebra for the link approach

A formalism of lattice supersymmetry based on a lattice-deformed superalgebra which was originally introduced in the link approach formulation is presented. We propose that the superalgebra can in fact be identified as a Hopf algebra, showing all the Hopf algebra axioms and consistencies are satisfied with explicit formulae. In particular, the "deformed" Leibniz rules proposed in the original link approach are now built in the coproduct structure of the Hopf algebra. Fields in this scheme, as representations of the Hopf algebra, are found to obey a kind of mildly deformed statistics, which is interpreted as a braiding strucutre. We can then construct, at least perturbatively, the corresponding lattice field theory, which has the Hopf algebraic symmetry with the deformed statistics, as an example of braided quantumm field theory formulated by Oeckl.

Lattice Supersymmetry: Some Ideas from Low Dimensional Models

In the framework of the so called link approach we study exact lattice supersymmetry for the simplest supersymmetric model: N=1 supersymmetry in D=1. The model is described by a lattice with spacing a/2, thus containing twice as many sites as the conventional one. The boson and fermion are related through a 2pi/a momentum shift, which can provide an interpretation of them being species doublers to each other. An exactly supersymmetric lattice action can be written within this scheme in momentum representation, which however turns out to be non local in coordinate space.

Formulation of Supersymmetry on a Lattice as a Representation of a Deformed Superalgebra

The lattice superalgebra of the link approach is shown to satisfy a Hopf algebraic supersymmetry where the difference operator is introduced as a momentum operator. The breakdown of the Leibniz rule for the lattice difference operator is accommodated as a coproduct operation of (quasi)triangular Hopf algebra and the associated field theory is consistently defined as a braided quantum field theory. Algebraic formulation of path integral is perturbatively defined and Ward-Takahashi identity can be derived on the lattice. The claimed inconsistency of the link approach leading to the ordering ambiguity for a product of fields is solved by introducing an almost trivial braiding structure corresponding to the triangular structure of the Hopf algebraic superalgebra. This could be seen as a generalization of spin and statistics relation on the lattice. From the consistency of this braiding structure of fields a grading nature for the momentum operator is required.

Matrix formulation of superspace on 1D lattice with two supercharges

Following the approach developed by some of the authors in recent papers and using a matrix representation for the superfields, we formulate an exact supersymmetric theory with two supercharges on a one dimensional lattice. In the superfield formalism supersymmetry transformations are uniquely defined and do not suffer of the ambiguities recently pointed out by some authors. The action can be written in a unique way and it is invariant under all supercharges. A modified Leibniz rule applies when supercharges act on a superfield product and the corresponding Ward identities take a modified form but hold exactly at least at the tree level, while their validity in presence of radiative corrections is still an open problem and is not considered here.

Exact Extended Supersymmetry on a Lattice: Twisted N=4 Super Yang-Mills in Three Dimensions

We propose a lattice formulation of three dimensional super Yang-Mills model with a twisted N=4 supersymmetry. The extended supersymmetry algebra of all the eight supercharges is fully and exactly realized on the lattice with a modified "Leibniz rule". The formulation we employ here is a three dimensional extension of manifestly gauge covariant method which was developed in our previous proposal of Dirac-Kaehler twisted N=2 super Yang-Mills on two dimensional lattice. The twisted N=4 supersymmetry algebra is geometrically realized on a three dimensional lattice with link supercharges and the use of "shifted" (anti-)commutators. A possible solution to the recent critiques on the link formulation will be discussed.
