Membranes and Maps

In positive degree, equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of Calabi-Yau fivefolds are expected to admit an interpretation in terms of M2-branes, while we conjecture that constant maps are governed by the corresponding supergravity index. We make the first expectation precise by proposing a modular interpretation of M2-branes supported on several smooth curves meeting at an $n$-fold point. Together, the two pictures yield conjectural formulas for the Gromov-Witten invariants, which we translate into closed formulas for pointed and unpointed quintuple Hodge integrals. We show that these conjectures imply a K-theoretic Gromov-Witten/Pairs correspondence for local curves in degree one and link the generating series of constant maps to Donaldson-Thomas theory of points. We also prove the conjectures in two limits of the equivariant parameters. Along the way, we obtain new closed formulas for certain triple Hodge integrals.

A bijective topological recursion for maps

We prove bijectively a recursive excision formula for maps of arbitrary topology. This yields the topological recursion formulae governing their enumeration, already at the level of formal generating series and without any analyticity assumption. We extend the result to maps carrying self-avoiding loop models and to stuffed maps, i.e. a variant of maps allowing faces of arbitrary topology. Our results give a precise combinatorial meaning to all terms of the (blobbed) topological recursion known for (stuffed) maps, including the recursion kernel, which had so far been missing. The construction relies on the simple idea of iterating Tutte's algorithm until the topology changes. Equivalently, it can be interpreted as a pair-of-pants decomposition driven by a path issuing from the root of the first boundary, providing an analogue for maps of the Mirzakhani-McShane identity for hyperbolic surfaces.

Refined lattice point counting on the moduli space of Klein surfaces

We introduce the moduli space of metric M\"obius graphs, which extend ribbon graphs to the non-orientable world. This space contains both the moduli space of Riemann surfaces and the moduli space of non-orientable Klein surfaces. Each metric M\"obius graph is equipped with a measure of non-orientability. We count lattice points in this moduli space, weighted by the measure of non-orientability, and prove a refined version of Norbury's recursion for this count. Taking the limit as the mesh becomes finer, we deduce a recursion for the Euclidean volumes, yielding a refined version of the Witten--Kontsevich recursion. As an application, we give a geometric definition of the refined Euler characteristic of the moduli space and compute it explicitly, thereby answering a question of Goulden, Harer, and Jackson.

Worldsheet Duals to One-Matrix Models

We derive a concrete closed string dual to any interacting Hermitian one-matrix model, away from the double-scaling limit. Matrix and string correlators manifestly agree, to all orders in the genus expansion and all orders in the 't Hooft coupling(s). The worldsheet theory consists of a supersymmetric B-twisted Landau-Ginzburg model coupled to 2d topological gravity. We provide a precise dictionary between traces of the matrix and vertex operators on the worldsheet. Matrix model correlators are explicitly mapped to computable integrals over the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We perform several direct cross-checks on both sides of the duality. This work furnishes a detailed instantiation of gauge/string duality, in the standard 't Hooft regime, and hopefully a useful worldsheet toy model for the AdS/CFT correspondence, away from the free field limit.

Matrix Correlators as Discrete Volumes of Moduli Space I: Recursion Relations, the BMN-limit and DSSYK

We show certain correlators in generic one-matrix models define a notion of ``discrete'' volumes of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, generalizing the connection between random matrices and JT gravity. We prove they obey a discrete, Mirzakhani-like recursion relation. Their fundamental discreteness crucially relies upon studying these matrix integrals away from the usual double-scaling limit. In a BMN-like limit of large traces, this recursion universally goes over to a continuous one, and the correlators asymptote to the volumes of Kontsevich. Finally, we demonstrate that the ETH matrix integral for DSSYK furnishes a discrete, $q$-analog of the Weil--Petersson volumes, thereby proving a conjecture due to K. Okuyama.

Theta classes: generalized topological recursion, integrability and $\mathcal{W}$-constraints

We study the intersection theory of the $\Theta^{r,s}$-classes, where $r \geq 2$ and $1 \le s \le r-1$, which are cohomological field theories obtained as the top degrees of Chiodo classes. We show that the recently introduced generalized topological recursion on the $(r,s)$ spectral curves computes the descendant integrals of the $\Theta^{r,s}$-classes. As a consequence, we deduce that the descendant potential of the $\Theta^{r,s}$-classes is a tau function of the $r$-KdV hierarchy, generalizing the Br\'ezin--Gross--Witten tau function (the special case $r=2$, $s=1$). We also explicitly compute the $\mathcal{W}$-constraints satisfied by the descendant potential, obtained as differential representations of the $\mathcal{W}(\mathfrak{gl}_r)$-algebra at self-dual level. This work extends previously known results on the Witten $r$-spin class, the $r$-spin $\Theta$-classes (the case $s=r-1$), and the Norbury $\Theta$-classes (the special case $r=2$, $s=1$).

Les Houches lecture notes on moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces

In these lecture notes, we provide an introduction to the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, a fundamental concept in the theories of 2D quantum gravity, topological string theory, and matrix models. We begin by reviewing some basic results concerning the recursive boundary structure of the moduli space and the associated cohomology theory. We then present Witten's celebrated conjecture and its generalisation, framing it as a recursive computation of cohomological field theory correlators via topological recursion. We conclude with a discussion of JT gravity in relation to hyperbolic geometry and topological strings. These lecture notes accompanied a series of lectures at the Les Houches school "Quantum Geometry (Mathematical Methods for Gravity, Gauge Theories and Non-Perturbative Physics)" in Summer 2024.

The factorial growth of topological recursion

We show that the $n$-point, genus-$g$ correlation functions of topological recursion on any regular spectral curve with simple ramifications grow at most like $(2g - 2 + n)!$ as $g \rightarrow \infty$, which is the expected growth rate. This provides, in particular, an upper bound for many curve counting problems in large genus and serves as a preliminary step for a resurgence analysis.

Can Transformers Do Enumerative Geometry?

How can Transformers model and learn enumerative geometry? What is a robust procedure for using Transformers in abductive knowledge discovery within a mathematician-machine collaboration? In this work, we introduce a Transformer-based approach to computational enumerative geometry, specifically targeting the computation of $\psi$-class intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves. By reformulating the problem as a continuous optimization task, we compute intersection numbers across a wide value range from $10^{-45}$ to $10^{45}$. To capture the recursive nature inherent in these intersection numbers, we propose the Dynamic Range Activator (DRA), a new activation function that enhances the Transformer's ability to model recursive patterns and handle severe heteroscedasticity. Given precision requirements for computing the intersections, we quantify the uncertainty of the predictions using Conformal Prediction with a dynamic sliding window adaptive to the partitions of equivalent number of marked points. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no prior work on modeling recursive functions with such a high-variance and factorial growth. Beyond simply computing intersection numbers, we explore the enumerative "world-model" of Transformers. Our interpretability analysis reveals that the network is implicitly modeling the Virasoro constraints in a purely data-driven manner. Moreover, through abductive hypothesis testing, probing, and causal inference, we uncover evidence of an emergent internal representation of the the large-genus asymptotic of $\psi$-class intersection numbers. These findings suggest that the network internalizes the parameters of the asymptotic closed-form and the polynomiality phenomenon of intersection numbers in a non-linear manner. This opens up new possibilities in inferring asymptotic closed-form expressions directly from limited amount of data.

A new spin on Hurwitz theory and ELSV via theta characteristics

We study spin Hurwitz numbers, which count ramified covers of the Riemann sphere with a sign coming from a theta characteristic. These numbers are known to be related to Gromov-Witten theory of Kähler surfaces and to representation theory of the Sergeev group, and are generated by BKP tau-functions. We use the latter interpretation to give polynomiality properties of these numbers and we derive a spectral curve which we conjecture computes spin Hurwitz numbers via a new type of topological recursion. We prove that this conjectural topological recursion is equivalent to an ELSV-type formula, expressing spin Hurwitz numbers in terms of the Chiodo class twisted by the $2$-spin Witten class.

Symmetries of F-cohomological field theories and F-topological recursion

We define F-topological recursion (F-TR) as a non-symmetric version of topological recursion, which associates a vector potential to some initial data. We describe the symmetries of the initial data for F-TR and show that, at the level of the vector potential, they include the F-Givental (non-linear) symmetries studied by Arsie, Buryak, Lorenzoni, and Rossi within the framework of F-manifolds. Additionally, we propose a spectral curve formulation of F-topological recursion. This allows us to extend the correspondence between semisimple cohomological field theories (CohFTs) and topological recursion, as established by Dunin-Barkowski, Orantin, Shadrin, and Spitz, to the F-world. In the absence of a full reconstruction theorem \`a la Teleman for F-CohFTs, this demonstrates that F-TR holds for the ancestor vector potential of a given F-CohFT if and only if it holds for some F-CohFT in its F-Givental orbit. We turn this into a useful statement by showing that the correlation functions of F-topological field theories (F-CohFTs of cohomological degree 0) are governed by F-TR. We apply these results to the extended 2-spin F-CohFT. Furthermore, we exhibit a large set of linear symmetries of F-CohFTs, which do not commute with the F-Givental action.

Shifted Witten classes and topological recursion

The Witten $r$-spin class defines a non-semisimple cohomological field theory. Pandharipande, Pixton and Zvonkine studied two special shifts of the Witten class along two semisimple directions of the associated Dubrovin--Frobenius manifold using the Givental--Teleman reconstruction theorem. We show that the $R$-matrix and the translation of these two specific shifts can be constructed from the solutions of two differential equations that generalise the classical Airy differential equation. Using this, we prove that the descendant intersection theory of the shifted Witten classes satisfies topological recursion on two $1$-parameter families of spectral curves. By taking the limit as the parameter goes to zero for these families of spectral curves, we prove that the descendant intersection theory of the Witten $r$-spin class can be computed by topological recursion on the $r$-Airy spectral curve. We finally show that this proof suffices to deduce Witten's $r$-spin conjecture, already proved by Faber, Shadrin and Zvonkine, which claims that the generating series of $r$-spin intersection numbers is the tau function of the $r$-KdV hierarchy that satisfies the string equation.

Length spectrum of large genus random metric maps

We study the length of short cycles on uniformly random metric maps (also known as ribbon graphs) of large genus using a Teichm\"uller theory approach. We establish that, as the genus tends to infinity, the length spectrum converges to a Poisson point process with an explicit intensity. This result extends the work of Janson and Louf to the multi-faced case.

Resurgent large genus asymptotics of intersection numbers

In this paper, we present a novel approach for computing the large genus asymptotics of intersection numbers. Our strategy is based on a resurgent analysis of the $n$-point functions of such intersection numbers, which are computed via determinantal formulae, and relies on the presence of a quantum curve. With this approach, we are able to extend the recent results of Aggarwal for Witten-Kontsevich intersection numbers with the computation of all subleading corrections, proving a conjecture of Guo-Yang, and to obtain new results on $r$-spin and Theta-class intersection numbers.

The Spin Gromov-Witten/Hurwitz correspondence for $\mathbb{P}^1$

We study the spin Gromov-Witten (GW) theory of $\mathbb{P}^1$. Using the standard torus action on $\mathbb{P}^1$, we prove that the associated equivariant potential can be expressed by means of operator formalism and satisfies the 2-BKP hierarchy. As a consequence of this result, we prove the spin analogue of the GW/Hurwitz correspondence of Okounkov-Pandharipande for $\mathbb{P}^1$, which was conjectured by J. Lee. Finally, we prove that this correspondence for a general target spin curve follows from a conjectural degeneration formula for spin GW invariants that holds in virtual dimension 0.

Relations on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ and the negative $r$-spin Witten conjecture

We construct and study various properties of a negative spin version of the Witten $ r $-spin class. By taking the top Chern class of a certain vector bundle on the moduli space of twisted spin curves that parametrises $ r $-th roots of the anticanonical bundle, we construct a non-semisimple cohomological field theory (CohFT) that we call the Theta class $ \Theta^r $. This CohFT does not have a flat unit and its associated Dubrovin--Frobenius manifold is nowhere semisimple. Despite this, we construct a semisimple deformation of the Theta class, and using the Teleman reconstruction theorem, we obtain tautological relations on $ \overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n} $. We further consider the descendant potential of the Theta class and prove that it is the unique solution to a set of $ \mathcal{W} $-algebra constraints, which implies a recursive formula for the descendant integrals. Using this result for $ r = 2 $, we prove Norbury's conjecture which states that the descendant potential of $ \Theta^2 $ coincides with the Br\'ezin--Gross--Witten tau function of the KdV hierarchy. Furthermore, we conjecture that the descendant potential of $ \Theta^r $ is the $ r $-BGW tau function of the $ r $-KdV hierarchy and prove the conjecture for $ r = 3 $.

Around the combinatorial unit ball of measured foliations on bordered surfaces

The volume $\mathscr{B}_Σ^{\rm comb}(\mathbb{G})$ of the unit ball -- with respect to the combinatorial length function $\ell_{\mathbb{G}}$ -- of the space of measured foliations on a stable bordered surface $Σ$ appears as the prefactor of the polynomial growth of the number of multicurves on $Σ$. We find the range of $s \in \mathbb{R}$ for which $(\mathscr{B}_Σ^{\rm comb})^{s}$, as a function over the combinatorial moduli spaces, is integrable with respect to the Kontsevich measure. The results depends on the topology of $Σ$, in contrast with the situation for hyperbolic surfaces where Arana-Herrera and Athreya (arXiv:1907.06287) recently proved an optimal square-integrability.

An intersection-theoretic proof of the Harer-Zagier formula

We provide an intersection-theoretic formula for the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of smooth curves. This formula reads purely in terms of Hodge integrals and, as a corollary, the standard calculus of tautological classes gives a new short proof of the Harer-Zagier formula. Our result is based on the Gauss-Bonnet formula, and on the observation that a certain parametrisation of the $Ω$-class - the Chern class of the universal $r$-th root of the twisted log canonical bundle - provides the Chern class of the log tangent bundle to the moduli space of smooth curves. Being $Ω$-classes by now employed in many enumerative problems, mostly recently found and at times surprisingly different from each other, we dedicate some work to produce an extensive list of their general properties: extending existing ones, finding new ones, and writing down some only known to the experts.
