Striped phases in two dimensional dipole systems

We prove that a system of discrete 2D in-plane dipoles with four possible orientations, interacting via a 3D dipole-dipole interaction plus a nearest neighbor ferromagnetic term, has periodic striped ground states. As the strength of the ferromagnetic term is increased, the size of the stripes in the ground state increases, becoming infinite, i.e., giving a ferromagentic ground state, when the ferromagentic interaction exceeds a certain critical value. We also give a rigorous proof of the reorientation transition in the ground state of a 2D system of discrete dipoles with six possible orientations, interacting via a 3D dipole-dipole interaction plus a nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic term. As the strength of the antiferromagnetic term is increased the ground state flips from being striped and in-plane to being staggered and out-of-plane. An example of a rotator model with a sinusoidal ground state is also discussed.

Absolute Stability Limit for Relativistic Charged Spheres

We find an exact solution for the stability limit of relativistic charged spheres for the case of constant gravitational mass density and constant charge density. We argue that this provides an absolute stability limit for any relativistic charged sphere in which the gravitational mass density decreases with radius and the charge density increases with radius. We then provide a cruder absolute stability limit that applies to any charged sphere with a spherically symmetric mass and charge distribution. We give numerical results for all cases. In addition, we discuss the example of a neutral sphere surrounded by a thin, charged shell.

Ground state energy of the low density Hubbard model. An upper bound

We derive an upper bound on the ground state energy of the three-dimensional (3D) repulsive Hubbard model on the cubic lattice agreeing in the low density limit with the known asymptotic expression of the ground state energy of the dilute Fermi gas in the continuum. As a corollary, we prove an old conjecture on the low density behavior of the 3D Hubbard model, i.e., that the total spin of the ground state vanishes as the density goes to zero.

Ising models with long-range dipolar and short-range ferromagnetic interactions

We study the ground state of a $d$--dimensional Ising model with both long range (dipole--like) and nearest neighbor ferromagnetic (FM) interactions. The long range interaction is equal to $r^{-p}$, $p>d$, while the FM interaction has strength $J$. If $p>d+1$ and $J$ is large enough the ground state is FM, while if $d 1$ the ground state has a series of transitions from an antiferromagnetic state of period 2 to $2h$--periodic states of blocks of sizes $h$ with alternating sign, the size $h$ growing when the FM interaction strength $J$ is increased (a generalization of this result to the case $0<p\le 1$ is also discussed). In $d\ge 2$ we prove, for $d<p\le d+1$, that the dominant asymptotic behavior of the ground state energy agrees for large $J$ with that obtained from a periodic striped state conjectured to be the true ground state. The geometry of contours in the ground state is discussed.

Fractional Lindstedt series

The parametric equations of the surfaces on which highly resonant quasi-periodic motions develop (lower-dimensional tori) cannot be analytically continued, in general, in the perturbation parameter, i.e. they are not analytic functions of the perturbation parameter. However rather generally quasi-periodic motions whose frequencies satisfy only one rational relation ("resonances of order 1") admit formal perturbation expansions in terms of a fractional power of the perturbation parameter, depending on the degeneration of the resonance. We find conditions for this to happen, and in such a case we prove that the formal expansion is convergent after suitable resummation.

Recurrence quantification analysis as a tool for the characterization of molecular dynamics simulations

A molecular dynamics simulation of a Lennard-Jones fluid, and a trajectory of the B1 immunoglobulin G-binding domain of streptococcal protein G (B1-IgG) simulated in water are analyzed by recurrence quantification, which is noteworthy for its independence from stationarity constraints, as well as its ability to detect transients, and both linear and nonlinear state changes. The results demonstrate the sensitivity of the technique for the discrimination of phase sensitive dynamics. Physical interpretation of the recurrence measures is also discussed.
