Uniform Distribution of Hardy Sums

We employ the spectral theory of Eisenstein series to prove that the Hardy sums, integer-valued analogs of the classical Dedekind sums, are uniformly distributed in $\mathbf{Z} / m \mathbf{Z}$ for any integer $m > 1$.

Two Geometric Interpretations of Hardy Sums

The problem of finding the number of lattice points in a triangle has a classical solution if the lattice is $\mathbf{Z}^2$ and the vertices of the triangle have integer valued coordinates. We consider what happens when we replace the lattice by $(2 \mathbf{Z})^2$ instead and give an explicit formula for the number of lattice points inside a triangle in terms of Hardy sums. Moreover, we give a second geometric interpretation of the Hardy sums as signed intersection numbers with a certain oriented net of geodesics. Using this geometric realization, we prove a generalized reciprocity law for Hardy sums by an elementary argument.

Continued Fractions and Hardy Sums

The classical Dedekind sums $s(d, c)$ can be represented as sums over the partial quotients of the continued fraction expansion of the rational $\frac{d}{c}$. Hardy sums, the analog integer-valued sums arising in the transformation of the logarithms of $θ$-functions under a subgroup of the modular group, have been shown to satisfy many properties which mirror the properties of the classical Dedekind sums. The representation as sums of partial quotients has, however, been missing so far. We define non-classical continued fractions and prove that Hardy sums can be expressed as a sums of partial quotients of these continued fractions. As an application, we give a new proof that the graph of the Hardy sums is dense in $\mathbf{R} \times \mathbf{Z}$.

Cycle Integrals of the Parson Poincaré Series and Intersection Angles of Geodesics on Modular Curves

We prove a geometric formula for the cycle integrals of Parson's weight 2k modular integrals in terms of the intersection angles of geodesics on modular curves. Our result is an analog for modular integrals of a classical formula for the cycle integrals of certain hyperbolic Poincaré series, due to Katok. On the other hand, it extends a recent geometric formula of Matsusaka and Duke, Imamoglu, and Tóth for the cycle integrals of weight 2 modular integrals.
