Rigidity and default in production networks

This paper studies the transmission of productivity shocks in general equilibrium production networks, when firms in different sectors operate under informational rigidity and rely on external debt. Rigidity breaks the Modigliani-Miller irrelevance of leverage and may generate default following shocks, even in equilibrium. The economy consists of firms, banks, and consumers. Under proportional shock transmission, we prove that a unique Walrasian rigid equilibrium exists and provide explicit expressions for equilibrium quantities, prices, and interest rates. We show that, on the one hand, Hulten's theorem fails under rigidity, even without leverage. On the other hand, we prove that welfare is smaller than in the first best if and only if both leverage and rigidity exist. The latter increase the total cost of debt and have inflationary effects on the levered sectors, which propagate downstream, and shift consumption and labor upstream. The occurrence of default depends solely on real shocks and the network structure, while the magnitude of the losses depends also on the connectedness of the economy and the cost of debt of the connected sectors. We provide conditions for default cascades to occur and study two examples of default propagation.

Global regularity of the value function in a stopper vs. singular-controller game

We study a class of zero-sum stochastic games between a stopper and a singular-controller, previously considered in [Bovo and De Angelis (2025)]. The underlying singularly-controlled dynamics takes values in $\mathcal{O}\subseteq\mathbb{R}$. The problem is set on a finite time-horizon and is connected to a parabolic variational inequality of min-max type with spatial-derivative and obstacle constraints. We show that the value function of the problem is of class $C^1$ in the whole domain $[0,T)\times\mathcal{O}$ and that the second-order spatial derivative and the second-order mixed derivative are continuous everywhere except for a (potential) jump across a non-decreasing curve (the stopping boundary of the game). The latter discontinuity is a natural consequence of the partial differential equation associated to the problem. Beyond its intrinsic analytical value, such a regularity for the value function is a stepping stone for further exploring the structure and properties of the free-boundaries of the stochastic game, which in turn determine the optimal strategies of the players.

An irreversible investment problem with a learning-by-doing feature

We study a model of irreversible investment for a decision-maker who has the possibility to gradually invest in a project with unknown value. In this setting, we introduce and explore a feature of "learning-by-doing", where the learning rate of the unknown project value is increasing in the decision-maker's level of investment in the project. We show that, under some conditions on the functional dependence of the learning rate on the level of investment (the "signal-to-noise" ratio), the optimal strategy is to invest gradually in the project so that a two-dimensional sufficient statistic reflects below a monotone boundary. Moreover, this boundary is characterised as the solution of a differential problem. Finally, we also formulate and solve a discrete version of the problem, which mirrors and complements the continuous version.

On variable annuities with surrender charges

In this paper we provide a theoretical analysis of Variable Annuities (VAs) with a focus on the holder's right to an early termination of the contract. Motivated by risk-management considerations, and in line with existing literature, we assume that the surrender option is optimally exercised from a purely financial perspective (i.e., we consider the worst-case scenario for the insurer). In this context, we rigorously derive the pricing formula for the VA and characterise the optimal surrender time. We also illustrate our theoretical results with extensive numerical experiments. The pricing problem is formulated as an optimal stopping problem with a time-dependent payoff which is discontinuous at the maturity of the contract and non-smooth. This structure leads to non-monotonic optimal stopping boundaries which we prove nevertheless to be continuous and regular in the sense of diffusions for the stopping set. The lack of monotonicity of the boundary makes it impossible to use classical methods from optimal stopping. Also more recent results about Lipschitz continuous boundaries are not applicable in our setup. Thus, we contribute a new methodology for non-monotone stopping boundaries.

On the monotonicity of the stopping boundary for time-inhomogeneous optimal stopping problems

We consider a class of time-inhomogeneous optimal stopping problems and we provide sufficient conditions on the data of the problem that guarantee monotonicity of the optimal stopping boundary. In our setting, time-inhomogeneity stems not only from the reward function but, in particular, from the time dependence of the drift coefficient of the one-dimensional stochastic differential equation (SDE) which drives the stopping problem. In order to obtain our results, we mostly employ probabilistic arguments: we use a comparison principle between solutions of the SDE computed at different starting times, and martingale methods of optimal stopping theory. We also show a variant of the main theorem, which weakens one of the assumptions and additionally relies on the renowned connection between optimal stopping and free-boundary problems.

Dynamic programming principle for classical and singular stochastic control with discretionary stopping

We prove the dynamic programming principle (DPP) in a class of problems where an agent controls a $d$-dimensional diffusive dynamics via both classical and singular controls and, moreover, is able to terminate the optimisation at a time of her choosing, prior to a given maturity. The time-horizon of the problem is random and it is the smallest between a fixed terminal time and the first exit time of the state dynamics from a Borel set. We consider both the cases in which the total available fuel for the singular control is either bounded or unbounded. We build upon existing proofs of DPP and extend results available in the traditional literature on singular control (e.g., Haussmann and Suo, SIAM J. Control Optim., 33, 1995) by relaxing some key assumptions and including the discretionary stopping feature. We also connect with more general versions of the DPP (e.g., Bouchard and Touzi, SIAM J. Control Optim., 49, 2011) by showing in detail how our class of problems meets the abstract requirements therein.

An abstract decomposition of measures and its many applications

We consider a little-known abstract decomposition result for positive measures due to Dellacherie, and show that it yields many decompositions of measures, several of which are new. We then extend Dellacherie's result to (controlled) vector measures, and apply it to obtain a decomposition of semimartingales due to Bichteler, on which we improve. Then, we investigate how the outputs of the decomposition depend on its inputs, in particular characterising the two elements of the decomposition as projections in the sense of Riesz spaces and of metric spaces. Finally, we prove a decomposition theorem for strictly positive operators on Riesz spaces which generalises Dellacherie's Theorem.

The de Finetti problem with unknown competition

We consider a resource extraction problem which extends the classical de Finetti problem for a Wiener process to include the case when a competitor, who is equipped with the possibility to extract all the remaining resources in one piece, may exist; we interpret this unknown competition as the agent being subject to possible fraud. This situation is modelled as a controller-and-stopper non-zero-sum stochastic game with incomplete information. In order to allow the fraudster to hide his existence, we consider strategies where his action time is randomised. Under these conditions, we provide a Nash equilibrium which is fully described in terms of the corresponding single-player de Finetti problem. In this equilibrium, the agent and the fraudster use singular strategies in such a way that a two-dimensional process, which represents available resources and the filtering estimate of active competition, reflects in a specific direction along a given boundary.

Optimal stopping for the exponential of a Brownian bridge

In this paper we study the problem of stopping a Brownian bridge $X$ in order to maximise the expected value of an exponential gain function. In particular, we solve the stopping problem $$\sup_{0\le τ\le 1}\mathsf{E}[\mathrm{e}^{X_τ}]$$ which was posed by Ernst and Shepp in their paper [Commun. Stoch. Anal., 9 (3), 2015, pp. 419--423] and was motivated by bond selling with non-negative prices. Due to the non-linear structure of the exponential gain, we cannot rely on methods used in the literature to find closed-form solutions to other problems involving the Brownian bridge. Instead, we develop techniques that use pathwise properties of the Brownian bridge and martingale methods of optimal stopping theory in order to find the optimal stopping rule and to show regularity of the value function.

The Italian Pension Gap: a Stochastic Optimal Control Approach

We study the gap between the state pension provided by the Italian pension system pre-Dini reform and post-Dini reform. The goal is to fill the gap between the old and the new pension by joining a defined contribution pension scheme and adopting an optimal investment strategy that is target-based. We find that it is possible to cover, at least partially, this gap with the additional income of the pension scheme, especially in the presence of late retirement and in the presence of stagnant career. Workers with dynamic career and workers who retire early are those who are most penalised by the reform. Results are intuitive and in line with previous studies on the subject.
