The Lee-Huang-Yang energy for a dilute gas of hard spheres: an upper bound

We consider a quantum gas consisting of $N$ hard spheres with radius $\frak{a} > 0$, obeying bosonic statistics and moving in the box $Λ= [0;L]^3$ with periodic boundary conditions. We are interested in the ground state energy per unit volume in the thermodynamic limit, with $N, L \to \infty$ at fixed density $ρ= N / L^3$. We derive an upper bound for the ground state energy density, matching the famous Lee-Huang-Yang formula, up to lower order terms, in the dilute limit $ρ\frak{a}^3 \ll 1$.

Third order corrections to the ground state energy of a Bose gas in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime

For a translation invariant system of $N$ bosons in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime, we establish a precise bound for the ground state energy $E_N$. While the leading, order $N$, contribution to $E_N$ has been known since [30,28] and the second order corrections (of order one) have been first determined in [5], our estimate also resolves the next term in the asymptotic expansion of $E_N$, which is of the order $(\log N) / N$.

Convergence of states for polaron models in the classical limit

We consider the quasi-classical limit of Nelson-type regularized polaron models describing a particle interacting with a quantized bosonic field. We break translation-invariance by adding an attractive external potential decaying at infinity, acting on the particle. In the strong coupling limit where the field behaves classically we prove that the model's energy quasi-minimizers strongly converge to ground states of the limiting Pekar-like non-linear model. This holds for arbitrarily small external attractive potentials, hence this binding is fully due to the interaction with the bosonic field. We use a new approach to the construction of quasi-classical measures to revisit energy convergence, and a localization method in a concentration-compactness type argument to obtain convergence of states.

Upper bound for the ground state energy of a dilute Bose gas of hard spheres

We consider a gas of bosons interacting through a hard-sphere potential with radius $\frak{a}$ in the thermodynamic limit. We derive a simple upper bound for the ground state energy per particle at low density. Our bound captures the leading term $4πρ\frak{a}$ and shows that corrections are smaller than $C ρ\frak{a} (ρ\frak{a}^3)^{1/2}$, for a sufficiently large constant $C > 0$. In combination with a known lower bound, our result implies that the first sub-leading term to the ground state energy is, in fact, of the order $ρ\frak{a} (ρ\frak{a}^3)^{1/2}$, in agreement with the Lee-Huang-Yang prediction.

A second order upper bound for the ground state energy of a hard-sphere gas in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime

We prove an upper bound for the ground state energy of a Bose gas consisting of $N$ hard spheres with radius $\mathfrak{a}/N$, moving in the three-dimensional unit torus $Λ$. Our estimate captures the correct asymptotics of the ground state energy, up to errors that vanish in the limit $N \to \infty$. The proof is based on the construction of an appropriate trial state, given by the product of a Jastrow factor (describing two-particle correlations on short scales) and of a wave function constructed through a (generalized) Bogoliubov transformation, generating orthogonal excitations of the Bose-Einstein condensate and describing correlations on large scales.

Trial states for Bose gases: singular scalings and non-integrable potentials

We review two results in which trial states for bosonic Hamiltonians were discussed. The problem of finding a trial state for a system with a hard-core potential in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime was recently solved by proving a link with the problem of finding a trial state for a system with a more regular potential in a less singular scaling, one of the type $N^{-1+3β}V(N^β\cdot)$ with $β\in(0,1)$. For both of these models we present the main result for the upper bound to the ground state energy, and discuss the key steps in the proof.

Reduced fluctuations for bosons in a double well

We review two recent results on the ground state properties of bosonic systems trapped by a double well external potential. In the limit of large population and large separation between the wells we prove that fluctuations in the number of particles occupying each single-well low energy mode occur at a reduced scale with respect to $ \sqrt{N}$, the latter being the typical prediction of the central limit theorem. This signals the breakdown of the independent and uncorrelated particles picture of standard Bose-Einstein condensation and the emergence of an interaction-driven correlated phase in the ground state.

Ground state energy of a Bose gas in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime

We review some rigorous estimates for the ground state energy of dilute Bose gases. We start with Dyson's upper bound, which provides the correct leading order asymptotics for hard spheres. Afterwards, we discuss a rigorous version of Bogoliubov theory, which recently led to an estimate for the ground state energy in the Gross-Pitaevskii regime, valid up to second order, for particles interacting through integrable potentials. Finally, we explain how these ideas can be combined to establish a new upper bound, valid to second order, for the energy of hard spheres in the Gross-Pitaeavskii limit. Here we only sketch the main ideas, details will appear elsewhere.

Bosons in a double well: two-mode approximation and fluctuations

We study the ground state for many interacting bosons in a double-well potential, in a joint limit where the particle number and the distance between the potential wells both go to infinity. Two single-particle orbitals (one for each well) are macroscopically occupied, and we are concerned with deriving the corresponding effective Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. We prove (i) an energy expansion, including the two-modes Bose-Hubbard energy and two independent Bogoliubov corrections (one for each potential well), (ii) a variance bound for the number of particles falling inside each potential well. The latter is a signature of a correlated ground state in that it violates the central limit theorem.

The Hartree functional in a double well

We consider a non-linear Hartree energy for bosonic particles in a symmetric double-well potential. In the limit where the wells are fare apart and the potential barrier is high, we prove that the ground state and first excited state are given to leading order by an even, respectively odd, superposition of ground states in single wells. We evaluate the resulting tunneling term splitting the corresponding energies precisely.

On some rigorous aspects of fragmented condensation

In this paper we discuss some aspects of fragmented condensation from a mathematical perspective. We first propose a simple way of characterizing finite fragmentation. Then, inspired by recent results of semiclassical analysis applied to bosonic systems with infinitely many degrees of freedom, we address the problem of persistence of fragmented condensation. We show that the latter occurs in interacting systems, in the mean-field regime, and in the limit of large gap of the one-body Hamiltonian.

Stability of the Laughlin phase against long-range interactions

A natural, "perturbative", problem in the modelization of the fractional quantum Hall effect is to minimize a classical energy functional within a variational set based on Laughlin's wave-function. We prove that, for small enough pair interactions, and asymptotically for large particle numbers, a minimizer can always be looked for in the particular form of uncorrelated quasi-holes superimposed to Laughlin's wave-function.

Ground state energy of mixture of Bose gases

We consider the asymptotic behavior of a system of multi-component trapped bosons, when the total particle number $N$ becomes large. In the dilute regime, when the interaction potentials have the length scale of order $O(N^{-1})$, we show that the leading order of the ground state energy is captured correctly by the Gross-Pitaevskii energy functional and that the many-body ground state fully condensates on the Gross-Pitaevskii minimizers. In the mean-field regime, when the interaction length scale is $O(1)$, we are able to verify Bogoliubov's approximation and obtain the second order expansion of the ground state energy. While such asymptotic results have several precursors in the literature on one-component condensates, the adaption to the multi-component setting is non-trivial in various respects and the analysis will be presented in details.

Effective non-linear spinor dynamics in a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We derive from first principles the experimentally observed effective dynamics of a spinor Bose gas initially prepared as a Bose-Einstein condensate and then left free to expand ballistically. In spinor condensates, which represent one of the recent frontiers in the manipulation of ultra-cold atoms, particles interact with a two-body spatial interaction and a spin-spin interaction. The effective dynamics is governed by a system of coupled semi-linear Schrödinger equations: we recover this system, in the sense of marginals in the limit of infinitely many particles, with a mean-field re-scaling of the many-body Hamiltonian. When the resulting control of the dynamical persistence of condensation is quantified with the parameters of modern observations, we obtain a bound that remains quite accurate for the whole typical duration of the experiment.

The singular Hartree equation in fractional perturbed Sobolev spaces

We establish the local and global theory for the Cauchy problem of the singular Hartree equation in three dimensions, that is, the modification of the non-linear Schrödinger equation with Hartree non-linearity, where the linear part is now given by the Hamiltonian of point interaction. The latter is a singular, self-adjoint perturbation of the free Laplacian, modelling a contact interaction at a fixed point. The resulting non-linear equation is the typical effective equation for the dynamics of condensed Bose gases with fixed point-like impurities. We control the local solution theory in the perturbed Sobolev spaces of fractional order between the mass space and the operator domain. We then control the global solution theory both in the mass and in the energy space.

Gross-Pitaevskii non-linear dynamics for pseudo-spinor condensates

We derive the equations for the non-linear effective dynamics of a so called pseudo-spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, which emerges from the linear many-body Schrödinger equation at the leading order in the number of particles. The considered system is a three-dimensional diluted gas of identical bosons with spin, possibly confined in space, and coupled with an external time-dependent magnetic field; particles also interact among themselves through a short-scale repulsive interaction. The limit of infinitely many particles is monitored in the physically relevant Gross-Pitaevskii scaling. In our main theorem, if at time zero the system is in a phase of complete condensation (at the level of the reduced one-body marginal) and with energy per particle fixed by the Gross-Pitaevskii functional, then such conditions persist also at later times, with the one-body orbital of the condensate evolving according to a system of non-linear cubic Schrödinger equations coupled among themselves through linear (Rabi) terms. The proof relies on an adaptation to the spinor setting of Pickl's projection counting method developed for the scalar case. Quantitative rates of convergence are available, but not made explicit because evidently non-optimal. In order to substantiate the formalism and the assumptions made in the main theorem, in an introductory section we review the mathematical formalisation of modern typical experiments with pseudo-spinor condensates.

Effective non-linear dynamics of binary condensates and open problems

We report on a recent result concerning the effective dynamics for a mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates, a class of systems much studied in physics and receiving a large amount of attention in the recent literature in mathematical physics; for such models, the effective dynamics is described by a coupled system of non-linear Schödinger equations. After reviewing and commenting our proof in the mean field regime from a previous paper, we collect the main details needed to obtain the rigorous derivation of the effective dynamics in the Gross-Pitaevskii scaling limit.

Remarks on the derivation of Gross-Pitaevskii equation with magnetic Laplacian

The effective dynamics for a Bose-Einstein condensate in the regime of high dilution and subject to an external magnetic field is governed by a magnetic Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We elucidate the steps needed to adapt to the magnetic case the proof of the derivation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation within the "projection counting" scheme.
