Chromoelectric flux tubes in QCD

We analyze the distribution of the chromoelectric field generated by a static quark-antiquark pair in the SU(3) vacuum and revisit previous results for SU(2). We find that the transverse profile of the flux tube resembles the dual version of the Abrikosov vortex field distribution. We give an estimate of the London penetration length of the chromoelectric field in the confined vacuum. We also speculate on the value of the ratio between the penetration lengths for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories.

The phase diagram of QCD with four degenerate quarks

We revisit the determination of the pseudo-critical line of QCD with four degenerate quarks at non-zero temperature and baryon density by the method of analytic continuation. We determine the pseudo-critical couplings at imaginary chemical potentials by high-statistics Monte Carlo simulations and reveal deviations from the simple quadratic dependence on the chemical potential visible in earlier works on the same subject. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for the shape of the pseudo-critical line at real chemical potential, comparing different possible extrapolations.

Critical behavior of the compact 3d U(1) gauge theory on isotropic lattices

We report on the computation of the critical point of the deconfinement phase transition, critical indices and the string tension in the compact three dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory at finite temperatures. The critical indices govern the behavior across the deconfinement phase transition in the pure gauge U(1) model and are generally expected to coincide with the critical indices of the two-dimensional XY model. We studied numerically the U(1) model for N_t=8 on lattices with spatial extension ranging from L=32 to L=256. Our determination of the infinite volume critical point on the lattice with N_t=8 differs substantially from the pseudo-critical coupling at L=32, found earlier in the literature and implicitly assumed as the onset value of the deconfined phase. The critical index $ν$ computed from the scaling of the pseudo-critical couplings with the extension of the spatial lattice agrees well with the XY value $ν$=1/2. On the other hand, the index $η$ shows large deviation from the expected universal value. The possible reasons of such behavior are discussed in details.

On the analytic continuation of the critical line

We perform a numerical study of the systematic effects involved in the determination of the critical line at real baryon chemical potential by analytic continuation from results obtained at imaginary chemical potentials. We present results obtained in a theory free of the sign problem, three-color QCD with finite isospin chemical potential, and comment on general features which could be relevant also to the continuation of the critical line in real QCD at finite baryon density.

Analytic continuation of the critical line: suggestions for QCD

We perform a numerical study of the systematic effects involved in the determination of the critical line at real baryonic chemical potential by analytic continuation from results obtained at imaginary chemical potentials. We present results obtained in theories free of the sign problem, such as two-color QCD with finite baryonic density and three-color QCD with finite isospin chemical potential, and comment on general features which could be relevant also to the continuation of the critical line in real QCD at finite baryonic density.

Non-compact QED3 at finite temperature: the confinement-deconfinement transition

The confinement-deconfinement phase transition is explored by lattice numerical simulations in non-compact (2+1)-dimensional quantum electrodynamics with massive fermions at finite temperature. The existence of two phases, one with and the other without confinement of fractional charges, is related to the realization of the Z symmetry. The order parameter of this transition can be clearly identified. We show that it is possible to detect the critical temperature for a given value of the fermion mass, by exploiting suitable lattice operators as probes of the Z symmetry. Moreover, the large-distance behavior of the correlation of these operators permits to distinguish the phase with Coulomb-confinement from the Debye-screened phase. The resulting scenario is compatible with the existence of a Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Some investigations are presented on the possible relation between chiral and deconfinement transitions and on the role of ``monopoles''.

Critical behavior of the compact 3d U(1) theory in the limit of zero spatial coupling

Critical properties of the compact three-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory are explored at finite temperatures on an asymmetric lattice. For vanishing value of the spatial gauge coupling one obtains an effective two-dimensional spin model which describes the interaction between Polyakov loops. We study numerically the effective spin model for N_t=1,4,8 on lattices with spatial extension ranging from L=64 to L=256. Our results indicate that the finite-temperature U(1) lattice gauge theory belongs to the universality class of the two-dimensional XY model, thus supporting the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture.

BFKL resummation effects in the gamma* gamma* total hadronic cross section

We study in the BFKL approach the total hadronic cross section for the collision of two virtual photons for energies in the range of LEP2 and in the range of future linear colliders. The BFKL resummation is done at the next-to-leading order in the BFKL Green's function; photon impact factors are taken instead at the leading order, but with the inclusion of the subleading terms required by invariance under changes of the renormalization scale and of the BFKL scale s_0. We compare our results with previous estimates based on a similar kind of approximation.

Collinear improvement of the BFKL kernel in the electroproduction of two light vector mesons

We test the performance of a RG-improved kernel in the determination of the amplitude of a physical process, the electroproduction of two light vector mesons,in the BFKL approach at the next-to-leading approximation (NLA). We find that a smooth behavior of the amplitude with the center-of-mass energy can be achieved, setting the renormalization and energy scales appearing in the subleading terms to values much closer to the kinematical scales of the process than in approaches based on unimproved kernels.

NLO BFKL at work: the electroproduction of two light vector mesons

The forward electroproduction of two light vector mesons is the first example of a collision process between strongly interacting colorless particles for which the amplitude can be written completely within perturbative QCD in the Regge limit with next-to-leading accuracy. This amplitude can be written as a convolution of two impact factors for the virtual photon to light vector meson transition with the BFKL Green's function. In this lecture we first describe how the relevant impact factor is calculated, then we perform the convolution with the BFKL Green's function and illustrate the numerical procedure to obtain a well-behaved amplitude.

Collinear improvement of the BFKL kernel in the electroproduction of two light vector mesons

The use of the BFKL kernel improved by the inclusion of subleading terms generated by renormalization group (RG) analysis has been suggested to cure the instabilities in the behavior of the BFKL Green's function in the next-to-leading approximation (NLA). We test the performance of a RG-improved kernel in the determination of the amplitude of a physical process, the electroproduction of two light vector mesons, in the BFKL approach in the NLA. We find that a smooth behavior of the amplitude with the center-of-mass energy can be achieved, setting the renormalization and energy scales appearing in the subleading terms to values much closer to the kinematical scales of the process than in the approaches based on the unimproved kernel.

The critical line from imaginary to real baryonic chemical potentials in two-color QCD

The method of analytic continuation from imaginary to real chemical potentials $μ$ is one of the few available techniques to study QCD at finite temperature and baryon density. One of its most appealing applications is the determination of the critical line for small $μ$: we perform a direct test of the validity of the method in this case by studying two-color QCD, where the sign problem is absent. The (pseudo)critical line is found to be analytic around $μ^2 = 0$, but a very large precision would be needed at imaginary $μ$ to correctly predict the location of the critical line at real $μ$.

Screening masses in the SU(3) pure gauge theory and universality

We determine from Polyakov loop correlators the screening masses in the deconfined phase of the (3+1)d SU(3) pure gauge theory at finite temperature near the transition, for two different channels of angular momentum and parity. Their ratio is compared with that of the massive excitations with the same quantum numbers in the 3d 3-state Potts model in the broken phase near the transition point at zero magnetic field. Moreover we study the inverse decay length of the correlation between the real parts and between the imaginary parts of the Polyakov loop and compare the results with expectations from perturbation theory and mean-field Polyakov loop models.

On the coordinate representation of NLO BFKL

The ``non-Abelian'' part of the quark contribution to the BFKL kernel in the next-to-leading order (NLO) is found in the coordinate representation by direct transfer of the contribution from the momentum representation where it was calculated before. The results obtained are used for the examination of conformal properties of the NLO BFKL kernel and of the relation between the BFKL and color dipole approaches.

Analytic continuation from imaginary to real chemical potential in two-color QCD

The method of analytic continuation from imaginary to real chemical potential is one of the most powerful tools to circumvent the sign problem in lattice QCD. Here we test this method in a theory, 2-color QCD, which is free from the sign problem. We find that the method gives reliable results, within appropriate ranges of the chemical potential, and that a considerable improvement can be achieved if suitable functions are used to interpolate data with imaginary chemical potential.

The dipole form of the quark part of the BFKL kernel

The dipole form of the ``Abelian'' part of the massless quark contribution to the BFKL kernel is found in the coordinate representation by direct transfer from the momentum representation where the contribution was calculated before. It coincides with the corresponding part of the quark contribution to the dipole kernel calculated recently by Balitsky and is conformal invariant.

NLO BFKL at work: the electroproduction of two light vector mesons

The amplitude for the forward electroproduction of two light vector mesons can be written completely within perturbative QCD in the Regge limit with next-to-leading accuracy, thus providing the first example of a physical application of the BFKL approach at the next-to-leading order. Recently, a numerical determination of the amplitude has been obtained in the case of equal photon virtualities, by using a definite representation for the amplitude and a definite optimization method for the perturbative series. Here, we study the main systematic effects in the previous determination, by considering a different representation of the amplitude and different optimization methods of the perturbative series. Moreover, we compare our result for the differential cross section at the minimum $|t|$ with a different approach, based on collinear kernel improvement.
