Bethe approximation for self-interacting lattice trees

In this paper we develop a Bethe approximation, based on the cluster variation method, which is apt to study lattice models of branched polymers. We show that the method is extremely accurate in cases where exact results are known as, for instance, in the enumeration of spanning trees. Moreover, the expressions we obtain for the asymptotic number of spanning trees and lattice trees on a graph coincide with analogous expressions derived through different approaches. We study the phase diagram of lattice trees with nearest-neighbour attraction and branching energies. We find a collapse transition at a tricritical theta point, which separates an expanded phase from a compact phase. We compare our results for the theta transition in two and three dimensions with available numerical estimates.

Cluster variation method and disorder varieties of two-dimensional Ising-like models

I show that the cluster variation method, long used as a powerful hierarchy of approximations for discrete (Ising-like) two-dimensional lattice models, yields exact results on the disorder varieties which appear when competitive interactions are put into these models. I consider, as an example, the plaquette approximation of the cluster variation method for the square lattice Ising model with nearest-neighbor, next-nearest-neighbor and plaquette interactions, and, after rederiving known results, report simple closed-form expressions for the pair and plaquette correlation functions.

Cluster variation - Pade` approximants method for the simple cubic Ising model

The cluster variation - Pade` approximant method is a recently proposed tool, based on the extrapolation of low/high temperature results obtained with the cluster variation method, for the determination of critical parameters in Ising-like models. Here the method is applied to the three-dimensional simple cubic Ising model, and new results, obtained with an 18-site basic cluster, are reported. Other techniques for extracting non-classical critical exponents are also applied and their results compared with those by the cluster variation - Pade` approximant method.

Deriving exact results for Ising-like models from the cluster variation method

The cluster variation method (CVM) is an approximation technique which generalizes the mean field approximation and has been widely applied in the last decades, mainly for finding accurate phase diagrams of Ising-like lattice models. Here we discuss in which cases the CVM can yield exact results, considering: (i) one-dimensional systems and strips (in which case the method reduces to the transfer matrix method), (ii) tree-like lattices and (iii) the so-called disorder points of euclidean lattice models with competitive interactions in more than one dimension.

Properties of some mean-field like approximations for the triangular Ising antiferromagnet

Motivated by a recent proposal of a Bethe approximation for the triangular Ising antiferromagnet [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 56}, 8241 (1997)], which seems to predict a disordered phase at any temperature in zero field, we analyze in some detail several mean-field like approximations for this model, namely the Bethe approximation itself, the cluster variation method and the hard-spin mean-field theory. We show: (i) that the disordered phase predicted by the Bethe approximation is unphysical at low enough temperature because of a negative entropy; (ii) how the results of the cluster variation method (namely, zero temperature entropy and critical temperature of the spurious transition) converge to the exact ones for increasing cluster size; (iii) that it is possible to construct a cluster variation approximation which yields a disordered phase which is stable down to zero temperature; (iv) a few, so far unknown, zero temperature results (entropy and internal energy) of the hard-spin mean-field theory.

Bethe Approximation for a Semi-flexible Polymer Chain

We present a Bethe approximation to study lattice models of linear polymers. The approach is variational in nature and based on the cluster variation method (CVM). We focus on a model with $(i)$ a nearest neighbor attractive energy $ε_v$ between pair of non--bonded monomers, $(ii)$ a bending energy $ε_h$ for each pair of successive chain segments which are not collinear. We determine the phase diagram of the system as a function of the reduced temperature $t=\frac{T}{ε_v}$ and of the parameter $x=\frac{ε_h}{ε_v}$. We find two different qualitative behaviors, on varying $t$. For small values of $x$ the system undergoes a $θ$ collapse from an extended coil to a compact globule; subsequently, on decreasing further $t$, there is a first order transition to an anisotropic phase, characterized by global orientational order. For sufficiently large values of $x$, instead, there is directly a first order transition from the coil to the orientational ordered phase. Our results are in good agreement with previous Monte Carlo simulations and contradict in some aspects mean--field theory. In the limit of Hamiltonian walks, our approximation recovers results of the Flory-Huggins theory for polymer melting.

On the low-temperature phase of the three-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the simple cubic lattice

The three-state antiferromagnetic Potts model on the simple cubic lattice is investigated using the cluster variation method in the cube and the star-cube approximations. The broken-sublattice-symmetry phase is found to be stable in the whole low-temperature region, contrary to previous results obtained using a modified cluster variation method. The tiny free energy difference between the broken-sublattice-symmetry and the permutationally-symmetric-sublattices phases is calculated in the two approximations and turns out to be smaller in the (more accurate) star-cube approximation than in the cube one.

Folding transition of the triangular lattice in a discrete three--dimensional space

A vertex model introduced by M. Bowick, P. Di Francesco, O. Golinelli, and E. Guitter (cond-mat/9502063) describing the folding of the triangular lattice onto the face centered cubic lattice has been studied in the hexagon approximation of the cluster variation method. The model describes the behaviour of a polymerized membrane in a discrete three--dimensional space. We have introduced a curvature energy and a symmetry breaking field and studied the phase diagram of the resulting model. By varying the curvature energy parameter, a first-order transition has been found between a flat and a folded phase for any value of the symmetry breaking field.

Folding transitions of the triangular lattice with defects

A recently introduced model describing the folding of the triangular lattice is generalized allowing for defects in the lattice and written as an Ising model with nearest-neighbor and plaquette interactions on the honeycomb lattice. Its phase diagram is determined in the hexagon approximation of the cluster variation method and the crossover from the pure Ising to the pure folding model is investigated, obtaining a quite rich structure with several multicritical points. Our results are in very good agreement with the available exact ones and extend a previous transfer matrix study.

NEW TOPOLOGIES IN THE PHASE DIAGRAM OF THE SEMI-INFINITE BLUME-CAPEL MODEL

The phase diagram of the Blume--Capel model on a semi--infinite simple cubic lattice with a (100) free surface is studied in the pair approximation of the cluster variation method. Six main topologies are found, of which two are new, due to the occurrence of a first order surface transition in the phase with ordered bulk, separating two phases with large and small surface order parameters. The latter is a new phase and is studied in some detail, giving the behaviour of the order parameter profiles in two typical cases. A comparison is made with the results of a low temperature expansion, where these are available, showing a great increase in accuracy with respect to the mean field approximation.

CVM ANALYSIS OF CROSSOVER IN THE SEMI-INFINITE ISING MODEL

The crossover behavior of the semi--infinite three dimensional Ising model is investigated by means of Padé approximant analysis of cluster variation method results. We give estimates for ordinary critical as well as for multicritical exponents, which are in very good agreement with extensive Monte Carlo simulations.

The half-filled Hubbard model in the pair approximation of the Cluster Variation Method

The half filled Hubbard model is studied in the pair approximation of the Cluster Variation Method. The use of the $SO(4)$ symmetry of the model makes possible to give a complete analytical characterization of the ground state, by means of explicit expressions for the double occupancy and the nearest neighbor correlation functions. The finite temperature analysis is reduced to the numerical solution of only two coupled transcendental equations. The behavior of local magnetic moment, specific heat and correlation functions is given for some typical cases in one and two dimensions. We obtain good qualitative agreement with exact and numerical results in one dimension. The results for finite temperatures show a rapid evolution, with increasing temperature, from a strongly antiferromagnetic behavior to a disordered one; in the high temperature region a maximum (which has been related to a "gradual" metal--insulator transition) is found in the specific heat for very large values of the Coulomb repulsion.

Surface reentrance in the semi-infinite spin-1 Ising models

The critical behavior of the semi-infinite Blume-Capel and Blume-Emery-Griffiths models is investigated in the pair approximation of the Cluster Variation Method. Equations for bulk and surface order parameters and n.n. correlation functions are given, from which analytical expressions for the second order bulk and surface critical temperatures are derived. The phase diagrams of the Blume-Capel model are classified, and the existence of a surface first order transition is discussed. This transition is shown to be, under certain conditions, slightly reentrant, and the behavior of the surface order parameters and correlation functions is given for such a case. The extension of our results to the Blume-Emery-Griffiths model is briefly discussed.

Generalized Coherent States for Dynamical Superalgebras

Coherent states for a general Lie superalgebra are defined following the method originally proposed by Perelomov. Algebraic and geometrical properties of the systems of states thus obtained are examined, with particular attention to the possibility of defining a Kähler structure over the states supermanifold and to the connection between this supermanifold and the coadjoint orbits of the dynamical supergroup. The theory is then applied to some compact forms of contragradient Lie superalgebras.

Multicritical Points And Reentrant Phenomenon In The BEG Model

The Blume - Emery - Griffiths model is investigated by use of the cluster variation method in the pair approximation. We determine the regions of the phase space where reentrant phenomenon takes place. Two regions are found, depending on the sign of the reduced quadrupole - quadrupole coupling strength $ξ$. For negative $ξ$ we find Para-Ferro-Para and Ferro-Para-Ferro-Para transition sequences; for positive $ξ$, a Para$_-$-Ferro-Para$_+$ sequence. Order parameters, correlation functions and specific heat are given in some typical cases. By-products of this work are the equations for the critical and tricritical lines.

Fermi-linearization scheme for itinerant electrons with Clifford variables

We propose here an alternative interpretation of the fermi-linarization approach to interacting electron systems, based on the requirement that the coefficients of the linearized operators are Clifford-like variables, whose anticommutator equals an unknown constant $c$. We apply the approximation to the Falicov-Kimball model, explicitly solving the self-consistency equation for the unknown, which turns out to behave as an order parameter. We discuss its relation with a metal-insulator transition and some thermodynamical quantities. In particular we show that our approximation in the $T=0$ limit reproduces exactly the Gutzwiller results for the Hubbard model.
