Fueter trees for Dunkl-regular functions over alternative *-algebras

We prove a general Fueter Theorem over real alternative *-algebras. We show that a suitable power of the Laplacian maps Dunkl-regular functions to Dunkl monogenic functions with axial symmetries. Using the embedding of hypercomplex function theories in the class of Dunkl monogenic functions, we subsume several Fueter-type results known in the literature and obtain the most general form for the action of the Laplacian on function spaces over hypercomplex subspaces. We show that Fueter Theorems are in a one-to-one correspondence with a class of graphs, the Fueter trees, that describe the interactions between Dunkl-regular function spaces and the relation with the iterated Laplacian. We obtain that the number of distinct Fueter trees on a hypercomplex space of dimension $n+1$ is equal to the number of partitions in odd parts of the integer $n$.

Dunkl regularity over alternative $*$-algebras

We characterise slice-regularity of functions over a real alternative *-algebra using operators that arise in Dunkl operator theory. We present a unifying perspective on hypercomplex analysis by defining a family of function spaces in the kernel of Dunkl-Cauchy-Riemann operators. Each of these function spaces, whose elements are called Dunkl-regular functions, refines Dunkl monogenic function theory and Dunkl harmonic analysis on Euclidean spaces. This approach allows a wide variety of hypercomplex function theories to be embedded as subcases of Dunkl monogenic function theory. This paves the way for further interactions between Dunkl theory and hypercomplex analysis.

Which Fueter-regular functions are holomorphic?

We provide a classification of Fueter-regular quaternionic functions $f$ in terms of the degree of complex linearity of their real differentials $df$. Quaternionic imaginary units define orthogonal almost-complex structures on the tangent bundle of the quaternionic space by left or right multiplication. Every map of two complex variables that is holomorphic with respect to one of these structures defines a Fueter-regular function. We classify the differential $df$ of a Fueter-regular function $f$, roughly speaking, in terms of how many choices of complex structures make $df$ complex linear. It turns out that, generically, $f$ is not holomorphic with respect to any choice of almost-complex structures. In the special case when it is indeed holomorphic, generically there is a unique choice of almost-complex structures making it holomorphic. The case of holomorphy with respect to several choices of almost-complex structures is limited to conformal real affine transformations or constants.

Wirtinger operators for functions of several quaternionic variables

We introduce Wirtinger operators for functions of several quaternionic variables. These operators are real linear partial differential operators which behave well on quaternionic polynomials, with properties analogous to the ones satisfied by the Wirtinger derivatives of several complex variables. Due to the non-commutativity of the variables, Wirtinger operators turn out to be of higher order, except the first ones that are of the first order. In spite of that, these operators commute each other and satisfy a Leibniz rule for products. Moreover, they characterize the class of slice-regular polynomials, and more generally of slice-regular quaternionic functions. As a step towards the definition of the Wirtinger operators, we provide Almansi-type decompositions for slice functions and for slice-regular functions of several variables. We also introduce some aspects of local slice analysis, based on the definition of locally slice-regular function in any open subset of the $n$-dimensional quaternionic space.

Cauchy-Riemann operators and local slice analysis over real alternative algebras

We prove some formulas relating Cauchy-Riemann operators defined on hypercomplex subspaces of an alternative *-algebra to a differential operator associated with the concept of slice-regularity and to the spherical Dirac operator. These results in particular allow to introduce a definition of locally slice-regular function and open the path for local slice analysis. Since Cauchy-Riemann operators factor the corresponding Laplacian operators, the proven formulas let us also obtain several results about the harmonicity and polyharmonicity properties of slice-regular functions.

Slice regular functions and orthogonal complex structures over $\mathbb{R}^8$

This work looks at the theory of octonionic slice regular functions through the lens of differential topology. It proves a full-fledged version of the Open Mapping Theorem for octonionic slice regular functions. Moreover, it opens the path for a possible use of slice regular functions in the study of almost-complex structures in eight dimensions.

A local Cauchy integral formula for slice-regular functions

We prove a Cauchy-type integral formula for slice-regular functions where the integration is performed on the boundary of an open subset of the quaternionic space, with no requirement of axial symmetry. In particular, we get a local Cauchy-type integral formula. As a step towards the proof, we provide a decomposition of a slice-regular function as a combination of two axially monogenic functions.

Eigenvalue problems for slice functions

This paper addresses particular eigenvalue problems within the context of two quaternionic function theories. More precisely, we study two concrete classes of quaternionic eigenvalue problems, the first one for the slice derivative operator in the class of quaternionic slice-regular functions and the second one for the Cauchy-Riemann-Fueter operator in the class of axially monogenic functions. The two problems are related to each other by the four-dimensional Laplace operator and Fueter's Theorem. As an application of a particular case of second order eigenvalue problems, we obtain a representation of axially monogenic solutions for time-harmonic Helmholtz and stationary Klein-Gordon equations.

Slice regular functions in several variables

In this paper, we lay the foundations of the theory of slice regular functions in several variables ranging in any real alternative $^*$-algebra, including quaternions, octonions and Clifford algebras. This theory is an extension of the classical theory of holomorphic functions in several complex variables.

Almansi-type theorems for slice-regular functions on Clifford algebras

We present an Almansi-type decomposition for polynomials with Clifford coefficients, and more generally for slice-regular functions on Clifford algebras. The classical result by Emilio Almansi, published in 1899, dealt with polyharmonic functions, the elements of the kernel of an iterated Laplacian. Here we consider polynomials of the form $P(x)=\sum_{k=0}^d x^ka_k$, with Clifford coefficients $a_k\in\mathbb R_{n}$, and get an analogous decomposition related to zonal polyharmonics. We show the relation between such decomposition and the Dirac (or Cauchy-Riemann) operator and extend the results to slice-regular functions.

A four dimensional Bernstein Theorem

We prove a four dimensional version of the Bernstein Theorem, with complex polynomials being replaced by quaternionic polynomials. We deduce from the theorem a quaternionic Bernstein's inequality and give a formulation of this last result in terms of four-dimensional zonal harmonics and Gegenbauer polynomials.

On a class of orientation-preserving maps of $\mathbb R^4$

The purpose of this paper is to present several new, sometimes surprising, results concerning a class of hyperholomorphic functions over quaternions, the so-called slice regular functions. The concept of slice regular function is a generalization of the one of holomorphic function in one complex variable. The results we present here show that such a generalization is multifaceted and highly non-trivial. We study the behavior of the Jacobian $J_f$ of a slice regular function $f$ proving in particular that $\det(J_f)\geq0$, i.e. $f$ is orientation-preserving. We give a complete characterization of the fibers of $f$ making use of a new notion we introduce here, the one of wing of $f$. We investigate the singular set $N_f$ of $f$, i.e. the set in which $J_f$ is singular. The singular set $N_f$ turns out to be equal to the branch set of $f$, i.e. the set of points $y$ such that $f$ is not a homeomorphism locally at $y$. We establish the quasi-openness properties of $f$. As a consequence we deduce the validity of the Maximum Modulus Principle for $f$ in its full generality. Our results are sharp as we show by explicit examples.

A four dimensional Jensen formula

We prove a Jensen formula for slice-regular functions of one quaternionic variable. The formula relates the value of the function and of its first two derivatives at a point with its integral mean on a three dimensional sphere centred at that point and with the disposition of its zeros. The formula can be extended to semiregular slice functions.

Slice regularity and harmonicity on Clifford algebras

We present some new relations between the Cauchy-Riemann operator on the real Clifford algebra $\mathbb R_n$ of signature $(0,n)$ and slice-regular functions on $\mathbb R_n$. The class of slice-regular functions, which comprises all polynomials with coefficients on one side, is the base of a recent function theory in several hypercomplex settings, including quaternions and Clifford algebras. In this paper we present formulas, relating the Cauchy-Riemann operator, the spherical Dirac operator, the differential operator characterizing slice regularity, and the {spherical derivative} of a slice function. The computation of the Laplacian of the spherical derivative of a slice regular function gives a result which implies, in particular, the Fueter-Sce Theorem. In the two four-dimensional cases represented by the paravectors of $\mathbb R_3$ and by the space of quaternions, these results are related to zonal harmonics on the three-dimensional sphere and to the Poisson kernel of the unit ball of $\mathbb R^4$.

The quaternionic Gauss-Lucas Theorem

The classic Gauss-Lucas Theorem for complex polynomials of degree $d\ge2$ has a natural reformulation over quaternions, obtained via rotation around the real axis. We prove that such a reformulation is true only for $d=2$. We present a new quaternionic version of the Gauss-Lucas Theorem valid for all $d\geq2$, together with some consequences.

Division algebras of slice functions

This work studies slice functions over finite-dimensional division algebras. Their zero sets are studied in detail along with their multiplicative inverses, for which some unexpected phenomena are discovered. The results are applied to prove some useful properties of the subclass of slice regular functions, previously known only over quaternions. Firstly, they are applied to derive from the maximum modulus principle a version of the minimum modulus principle, which is in turn applied to prove the open mapping theorem. Secondly, they are applied to prove, in the context of the classification of singularities, the counterpart of the Casorati-Weierstrass theorem.

Singularities of slice regular functions over real alternative *-algebras

The main goal of this work is classifying the singularities of slice regular functions over a real alternative *-algebra A. This function theory has been introduced in 2011 as a higher-dimensional generalization of the classical theory of holomorphic complex functions, of the theory of slice regular quaternionic functions launched by Gentili and Struppa in 2006 and of the theory of slice monogenic functions constructed by Colombo, Sabadini and Struppa since 2009. Along with this generalization step, the larger class of slice functions over A has been defined. We introduce here a new type of series expansion near each singularity of a slice regular function. This instrument, which is new even in the quaternionic case, leads to a complete classification of singularities. This classification also relies on some recent developments of the theory, concerning the algebraic structure and the zero sets of slice functions. Peculiar phenomena arise, which were not present in the complex or quaternionic case, and they are studied by means of new results on the topology of the zero sets of slice functions. The analogs of meromorphic functions, called (slice) semiregular functions, are introduced and studied.

Spectral representations of normal operators via Intertwining Quaternionic Projection Valued Measures

The possibility of formulating quantum mechanics over quaternionic Hilbert spaces can be traced back to von Neumann's foundational works in the thirties. The absence of a suitable quaternionic version of spectrum prevented the full development of the theory. The first rigorous quaternionic formulation has been started only in 2007 with the definition of the spherical spectrum of a quaternionic operator based on a quadratic version of resolvent operator. The relevance of this notion is proved by the existence of a quaternionic continuous functional calculus and a theory of quaternionic semigroups relying upon it. A problem of quaternionic formulation is the description of composite quantum systems in absence of a natural tensor product due to non-commutativity of quaternions. A promising tool towards a solution is a quaternionic projection-valued measure (PVM), making possible a tensor product of quaternionic operators with physical relevance. A notion with this property, called intertwining quaternionic PVM, is presented here. This foundational paper aims to investigate the interplay of this new mathematical object and the spherical spectral features of quaternionic generally unbounded normal operators. We discover in particular the existence of other spectral notions equivalent to the spherical ones, but based on a standard non-quadratic notion of resolvent operator.
