Towards the development of human immune-system-on-a-chip platforms

Organ-on-a-chip (OoCs) platforms could revolutionize drug discovery and might ultimately become essential tools for precision therapy. Although many single-organ and interconnected systems have been described, the immune system has been comparatively neglected, despite its pervasive role in the body and the trend towards newer therapeutic products (i.e., complex biologics, nanoparticles, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and engineered T cells) that often cause, or are based on, immune reactions. In this review, we recapitulate some distinctive features of the immune system before reviewing microfluidic devices that mimic lymphoid organs or other organs and/or tissues with an integrated immune system component.

A new detector for deep inelastic physics

The Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC) is a proposed upgrade to the LHC, to provide high energy, high luminosity electron-proton and electron-ion collisions to run concurrently with Phase 2 of the LHC. The key elements of the LHeC detector and the requirements from the physics programme are outlined, followed by a brief description of the baseline LHeC detector design.

The baseline design of a detector for the LHeC is described, driven by the requirements from the projected physics programme and including some preliminary results from first simulations.

Bright light emission and waveguiding in conjugated polymer nanofibers electrospun from organic-salt added solutions

Light emitting electrospun nanofibers of poly-[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-co-(N,N'-diphenyl)-N,N'-di(p-butyl-oxy-phenyl)-1,4-diaminobenzene)] (PFO-PBAB) are produced by electrospinning under different experimental conditions. In particular, uniform fibers with average diameter of 180 nm are obtained by adding an organic salt to the electrospinning solution. The spectroscopic investigation assesses that the presence of the organic salt does not alter the optical properties of the active material, therefore providing an alternative approach for the fabrication of highly emissive conjugated polymer nanofibers. The produced nanofibers display self-waveguiding of light, and polarized photoluminescence, which is especially promising for embedding active electrospun fibers in sensing and nanophotonic devices.

The Architecture of the ZEUS Micro Vertex Detector DAQ and Second Level Global Track Trigger

The architecture of the ZEUS Micro Vertex Detector data acquisition system and the implementation of its second level trigger, the ZEUS Global Track Trigger are described. Data from the vertex detectors HELIX read-out chips, corresponding to 200k channels, are digitized by 3 crates of ADCs which perform noise and pedestal subtraction, and data suppression and compaction. PowerPC VME board computers push cluster data for second level trigger processing and strip data for event building via Fast and Gigabit Ethernet network connections. Additional tracking information from the central tracking chamber and the forward straw tube tracker are interfaced into the 12 dual CPU PC farm of the Global Track Trigger where track and vertex finding is performed. The system is data driven at the ZEUS first level trigger rate (~500Hz) and must generate a trigger result after a mean time of 10ms.
