Lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the magnetic Laplacian

We consider a Riemannian cylinder endowed with a closed potential 1-form A and study the magnetic Laplacian with magnetic Neumann boundary conditions associated with those data. We establish a sharp lower bound for the first eigenvalue and show that the equality characterizes the situation where the metric is a product. We then look at the case of a planar domain bounded by two closed curves and obtain an explicit lower bound in terms of the geometry of the domain. We finally discuss sharpness of this last estimate.

Eigenvalue bounds for the magnetic Laplacian

We consider a compact Riemannian manifold M endowed with a potential 1-form A and study the magnetic Laplacian associated with those data (with Neumann magnetic boundary condition if the bpoundary of M is not empty). We first establish a family of upper bounds for all the eigenvalues, compatible with the Weyl law. When the potential is a closed 1-form, we get a sharp upper bound for the first eigenvalue. In the second part, we consider only closed potentials, and we establish a sharp lower bound for the first eigenvalue when the manifold is a 2-dimensional Riemannian cylinder. The equality case characterizes the situation where the metric is a product. We also look at the case of doubly convex domains in the Euclidean plane.

Heat flow, heat content and the isoparametric property

Let $M$ be a Riemannian manifold and $Ω$ a compact domain of $M$ with smooth boundary. We study the solution of the heat equation on $Ω$ having constant unit initial conditions and Dirichlet boundary conditions. The purpose of this paper is to study the geometry of domains for which, at any fixed value of time, the normal derivative of the solution (heat flow) is a constant function on the boundary. We express this fact by saying that such domains have the constant flow property. In constant curvature spaces known examples of such domains are given by geodesic balls and, more generally, by domains whose boundary is connected and isoparametric. The question is: are they all like that? In this paper we give an affirmative answer to this question: in fact we prove more generally that, if a domain in an analytic Riemannian manifold has the constant flow property, then every component of its boundary is an isoparametric hypersurface. For space forms, we also relate the order of vanishing of the heat content with fixed boundary data with the constancy of the $r$-mean curvatures of the boundary and with the isoparametric property. Finally, we discuss the constant flow property in relation to other well-known overdetermined problems involving the Laplace operator, like the Serrin problem or the Schiffer problem.

Eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a compact manifold with density

In this paper, we study the spectrum of the weighted Laplacian (also called Bakry-Emery or Witten Laplacian) $L_σ$ on a compact, connected, smooth Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ endowed with a measure $σdv_g$. First, we obtain upper bounds for the $k-$th eigenvalue of $L_σ$ which are consistent with the power of $k$ in Weyl's formula. These bounds depend on integral norms of the density $σ$, and in the second part of the article, we give examples showing that this dependence is, in some sense, sharp. As a corollary, we get bounds for the eigenvalues of Laplace type operators, such as the Schrödinger operator or the Hodge Laplacian on $p-$forms. In the special case of the weighted Laplacian on the sphere, we get a sharp inequality for the first nonzero eigenvalue which extends Hersch's inequality.

Sharp bounds for the first eigenvalue of a fourth order Steklov problem

We study the biharmonic Steklov eigenvalue problem on a compact Riemannian manifold $Ω$ with smooth boundary. We give a computable, sharp lower bound of the first eigenvalue of this problem, which depends only on the dimension, a lower bound of the Ricci curvature of the domain, a lower bound of the mean curvature of its boundary and the inner radius. The proof is obtained by estimating the isoperimetric ratio of non-negative subharmonic functions on $Ω$, which is of independent interest. We also give a comparison theorem for geodesic balls.

On the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator on forms

We study a Dirichlet-to-Neumann eigenvalue problem for differential forms on a compact Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary. This problem is a natural generalization of the classical Steklov problem on functions. We derive a number of upper and lower bounds for the first eigenvalue in several contexts: many of these estimates will be sharp, and for some of them we characterize equality. We also relate these new eigenvalues with those of other operators, like the Hodge Laplacian or the biharmonic Steklov operator.

A Reilly formula and eigenvalue estimates for differential forms

We derive a Reilly-type formula for differential p-forms on a compact manifold with boundary and apply it to give a sharp lower bound of the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian acting on differential forms of an embedded hypersurface of a Riemannian manifold. The equality case of our inequality gives rise to a number of rigidity results, when the geometry of the boundary has special properties and the domain is non-negatively curved. Finally we also obtain, as a by-product of our calculations, an upper bound of the first eigenvalue of the Hodge Laplacian when the ambient manifold supports non-trivial parallel forms.
