Periodic steady state and interference in a periodically driven quantum system

We study the coherent dynamics of a quantum many-body system subject to a time-periodic driving. We argue that in many cases, destructive interference in time makes most of the quantum averages time-periodic, after an initial transient. We discuss in detail the case of a quantum Ising chain periodically driven across the critical point, finding that, as a result of quantum coherence, the system never reaches an infinite temperature state. Floquet resonance effects are moreover observed in the frequency dependence of the various observables, which display a sequence of well-defined peaks or dips. Extensions to non-integrable systems are discussed.

Large deviations and universality in quantum quenches

We study the large deviations statistics of the intensive work done by changing globally a control parameter in a thermally isolated quantum many-body system. We show that, upon approaching a critical point, large deviations well below the mean work display universal features related to the critical Casimir effect in the corresponding classical system. Large deviations well above the mean are, instead, of quantum nature and not captured by the quantum-to-classical correspondence. For a bosonic system we show that in this latter regime a transition from exponential to power-law statistics, analogous to the equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation, may occur depending on the parameters of the quench and on the spatial dimensionality.

Many-body localization and thermalization in the full probability distribution function of observables

We investigate the relation between thermalization following a quantum quench and many-body localization in quasiparticle space in terms of the long-time full distribution function of physical observables. In particular, expanding on our recent work [E. Canovi {\em et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 83}, 094431 (2011)], we focus on the long-time behavior of an integrable XXZ chain subject to an integrability-breaking perturbation. After a characterization of the breaking of integrability and the associated localization/delocalization transition using the level spacing statistics and the properties of the eigenstates, we study the effect of integrability-breaking on the asymptotic state after a quantum quench of the anisotropy parameter, looking at the behavior of the full probability distribution of the transverse and longitudinal magnetization of a subsystem. We compare the resulting distributions with those obtained in equilibrium at an effective temperature set by the initial energy. We find that, while the long time distribution functions appear to always agree {\it qualitatively} with the equilibrium ones, {\it quantitative} agreement is obtained only when integrability is fully broken and the relevant eigenstates are diffusive in quasi-particle space.

Relaxation, pre-thermalization and diffusion in a noisy Quantum Ising Chain

We study the dynamics of thermalization resulting from a time-dependent noise in a Quantum Ising Chain subject to a sudden quench of the transverse magnetic field. For weak noise the dynamics shows a pre-thermalized state at intermediate time scales, eventually drifting towards an asymptotic infinite temperature steady state characterized by diffusive behavior. By computing analytically the density of kinks, as well as the transverse and longitudinal magnetic field correlators, we characterize these two regimes, their observability and their signatures in the various physical quantities.

Universal energy distribution of quasi-particles emitted in a local time dependent quench

We study the emission of quasi-particles in the scaling limit of the 1d Quantum Ising chain at the critical point perturbed by a time dependent local transverse field. We compute \it exactly \rm and for a \it generic \rm time dependence the average value of the transverse magnetization, its correlation functions, as well as the statistic of both the inclusive and exclusive work. We show that, except for a cyclic perturbation, the probability distribution of the work at low energies is a power law whose exponent is universal, i.e. does not depend on the specific time dependent protocol, but only on the final value attained by the perturbation.

Nonequilibrium dynamics of closed interacting quantum systems

This colloquium gives an overview of recent theoretical and experimental progress in the area of nonequilibrium dynamics of isolated quantum systems. We particularly focus on quantum quenches: the temporal evolution following a sudden or slow change of the coupling constants of the system Hamiltonian. We discuss several aspects of the slow dynamics in driven systems and emphasize the universality of such dynamics in gapless systems with specific focus on dynamics near continuous quantum phase transitions. We also review recent progress on understanding thermalization in closed systems through the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and discuss relaxation in integrable systems. Finally we overview key experiments probing quantum dynamics in cold atom systems and put them in the context of our current theoretical understanding.

Applicability of the generalized Gibbs ensemble after a quench in the quantum Ising chain

We investigate the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of the one-dimensional quantum Ising model after a sudden quench of the transverse magnetic field. While for a translationally invariant system the statistical description of the asymptotic order parameter correlations after the quench can be performed in terms of the generalized Gibbs ensemble, we show that a breaking of translational invariance, e.g., by perturbing the boundary conditions, disrupts its validity. This effect, which of course vanishes in the thermodynamic limit, is shown to be very important in the presence of disorder.

Statistics of the Work in Quantum Quenches, Universality and the Critical Casimir Effect

We consider the dynamics of an isolated quantum many-body system after a sudden change of one control parameter, focusing on the statistics of the work done. We establish a connection between the generating function of the distribution of the work and the partition function of a classical system in a film geometry. Using this connection, we first show that the scaling of the fidelity susceptibilities close to a quantum phase transition can be understood in terms of the critical behavior of the excess entropy and specific heat in the classical model. Remarkably, we show that the statistics of the work close to the threshold and to criticality is connected to the so-called critical Casimir free energy which is responsible for the interaction between the boundaries of the classical system. On the basis of this relation, we highlight the emerging universal features of the statistics of the work. Our findings are exemplified for a global quench of the transverse Ising chain at zero temperature.

Quantum Quenches, Thermalization and Many-Body Localization

We conjecture that thermalization following a quantum quench in a strongly correlated quantum system is closely connected to many-body delocalization in the space of quasi-particles. This scenario is tested in the anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain with different types of integrability-breaking terms. We first quantify the deviations from integrability by analyzing the level spacing statistics and the inverse participation ratio of the system's eigenstates. We then focus on thermalization, by studying the dynamics after a sudden quench of the anisotropy parameter. Our numerical simulations clearly support the conjecture, as long as the integrability-breaking term acts homogeneously on the quasiparticle space, in such a way as to induce ergodicity over all the relevant Hilbert space.

Long time dynamics following a quench in an integrable quantum spin chain: local versus non-local operators and effective thermal behavior

We study the dynamics of the quantum Ising chain following a zero-temperature quench of the transverse field strength. Focusing on the behavior of two-point spin correlation functions, we show that the correlators of the order parameter display an effective asymptotic thermal behavior, i.e., they decay exponentially to zero, with a phase coherence rate and a correlation length dictated by the equilibrium law with an effective temperature set by the energy of the initial state. On the contrary, the two-point correlation functions of the transverse magnetization or the density-of-kinks operator decay as a power-law and do not exhibit thermal behavior. We argue that the different behavior is linked to the locality of the corresponding operator with respect to the quasi-particles of the model: non-local operators, such as the order parameter, behave thermally, while local ones do not. We study which features of the two-point correlators are a consequence of the integrability of the model by analizing their robustness with respect to a sufficiently strong integrability-breaking term.

Quantum quenches in the Dicke model: statistics of the work done and of other observables

We study the statistics of the work done in a zero temperature quench of the coupling constant in the Dicke model describing the interaction between a gas of two level atoms and a single electromagnetic cavity mode. When either the final or the initial coupling constants approach the critical coupling $λ_c$ that separates the normal and superradiant phases of the system, the probability distribution of the work done displays singular behavior. The average work tends to diverge as the initial coupling parameter is brought closer to the critical value $λ_c$. In contrast, for quenches ending close to criticality, the distribution of work has finite moments but displays a sequence of edge singularities. This contrasting behavior is related to the difference between the processes of compression and expansion of a particle subject to a sudden change of its confining potential. We confirm this by studying in detail the time dependent statistics of other observables, such as the quadratures of the photons and the total occupation of the bosonic modes.

Thermalization dynamics close to a quantum phase transition

We investigate the dissipative dynamics of a quantum critical system in contact with a thermal bath. In analogy with the standard protocol employed to analyze aging, we study the response of a system to a sudden change of the bath temperature. The specific example of the XY model in a transverse magnetic field whose spins are locally coupled to a set of bosonic baths is considered. The peculiar nature of the dynamics is encoded in the correlations developing out of equilibrium. By means of a kinetic equation we analyze the spin-spin correlations and block correlations. We identify some universal features in the out-of-equilibrium dynamics. Two distinct regimes, characterized by different time and length scales, emerge. During the initial transient the dynamics is characterized by the same critical exponents as those of the equilibrium quantum phase transition and resembles the dynamics of thermal phase transitions. At long times equilibrium is reached through the propagation along the chain of a thermal front in a manner similar to the classical Glauber dynamics.

Effective thermal dynamics following a quantum quench in a spin chain

We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of the Quantum Ising Model following an abrupt quench of the transverse field. We focus on the on-site autocorrelation function of the order parameter, and extract the phase coherence time $τ^ϕ_Q$ from its asymptotic behavior. We show that the initial state determines $τ^ϕ_Q$ only through an effective temperature set by its energy and the final Hamiltonian. Moreover, we observe that the dependence of $τ^ϕ_Q$ on the effective temperature fairly agrees with that obtained in thermal equilibrium as a function of the equilibrium temperature.

Adiabatic dynamics of a quantum critical system coupled to an environment: Scaling and kinetic equation approaches

We study the dynamics of open quantum many-body systems driven across a critical point by quenching an Hamiltonian parameter at a certain velocity. General scaling laws are derived for the density of excitations and energy produced during the quench as a function of quench velocity and bath temperature. The scaling laws and their regimes of validity are verified for the XY spin chain locally coupled to bosonic baths. A detailed derivation and analysis of the kinetic equation of the problem is presented.

Adiabatic dynamics in open quantum critical many-body systems

The purpose of this work is to understand the effect of an external environment on the adiabatic dynamics of a quantum critical system. By means of scaling arguments we derive a general expression for the density of excitations produced in the quench as a function of its velocity and of the temperature of the bath. We corroborate the scaling analysis by explicitly solving the case of a one-dimensional quantum Ising model coupled to an Ohmic bath.

The Statistics of the Work Done on a Quantum Critical System by Quenching a Control Parameter

We study the statistics of the work done on a quantum critical system by quenching a control parameter in the Hamiltonian. We elucidate the relation between the probability distribution of the work and the Loschmidt echo, a quantity emerging usually in the context of dephasing. Using this connection we characterize the statistics of the work done on a quantum Ising chain by quenching locally or globally the transverse field. We show that for local quenches starting at criticality the probability distribution of the work displays an interesting edge singularity.

Phase coherence, inelastic scattering, and interaction corrections in pumping through quantum dots

Adiabatic quantum pumping in noninteracting, phase coherent quantum dots is elegantly described by Brouwer's formula. Interactions within the dot, while suppressing phase coherence, make Brouwer's formalism inapplicable. In this paper, we discuss the nature of the physical processes forcing a description of pumping beyond Brouwer's formula, and develop, using a controlled adiabatic expansion, a useful formalism to study the effect of interactions within a generic perturbative scheme. The pumped current consists of a first contribution, analogous to Brouwer's formula and accounting for the remanent coherence, and of interaction corrections describing inelastic scattering. We apply the formalism to study the effect of interaction with a bosonic bath on a resonant level pump and discuss the robustness of the quantization of the pumped charge in turnstile cycles.

Adiabatic pumping through a quantum dot in the Kondo regime: Exact results at the Toulouse limit

Transport properties of ultrasmall quantum dots with a single unpaired electron are commonly modeled by the nonequilibrium Kondo model, describing the exchange interaction of a spin-1/2 local moment with two leads of noninteracting electrons. Remarkably, the model possesses an exact solution when tuned to a special manifold in its parameter space known as the Toulouse limit. We use the Toulouse limit to exactly calculate the adiabatically pumped spin current in the Kondo regime. In the absence of both potential scattering and a voltage bias, the instantaneous charge current is strictly zero for a generic Kondo model. However, a nonzero spin current can be pumped through the system in the presence of a finite magnetic field, provided the spin couples asymmetrically to the two leads. Tunneling through a Kondo impurity thus offers a natural mechanism for generating a pure spin current. We show, in particular, that one can devise pumping cycles along which the average spin pumped per cycle is closely equal to $\hbar$. By analogy with Brouwer's formula for noninteracting systems with two driven parameters, the pumped spin current is expressed as a geometrical property of a scattering matrix. However, the relevant %Alex: I replaced topological with geometrical in the sentence above scattering matrix that enters the formulation pertains to the Majorana fermions that appear at the Toulouse limit rather than the physical electrons that carry the current. These results are obtained by combining the nonequilibrium Keldysh Green function technique with a systematic gradient expansion, explicitly exposing the small parameter controlling the adiabatic limit.
