What is a hierarchically hyperbolic space?

The first part of this survey is a heuristic, non-technical discussion of what an HHS is, and the aim is to provide a good mental picture both to those actively doing research on HHSs and to those who only seek a basic understanding out of pure curiosity. It can be read independently of the second part, which is a detailed technical discussion of the axioms and the main tools to deal with HHSs.

Largest projections for random walks and shortest curves in random mapping tori

We show that the largest subsurface projection distance between a marking and its image under the nth step of a random walk grows logarithmically in n, with probability approaching 1 as n tends to infinity. Our setup is general and also applies to (relatively) hyperbolic groups and to $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$. We then use this result to prove Rivin's conjecture that for a random walk $(w_n)$ on the mapping class group, the shortest geodesic in the hyperbolic mapping torus $M_{w_n}$ has length on the order of $1/ \log^2(n)$.

Gromov's random monsters do not act non-elementarily on hyperbolic spaces

We show that Gromov's monster groups arising from i.i.d. labelings of expander graphs do not admit non-elementary actions on geodesic hyperbolic spaces. The proof relies on comparing properties of random walks on randomly labeled graphs and on groups acting non-elementarily on hyperbolic spaces.

The zero norm subspace of bounded cohomology of acylindrically hyperbolic groups

We construct combinatorial volume forms of hyperbolic three manifolds fibering over the circle. These forms define non-trivial classes in bounded cohomology. After introducing a new seminorm on exact bounded cohomology, we use these combinatorial classes to show that, in degree 3, the zero norm subspace of the bounded cohomology of an acylindrically hyperbolic group is infinite dimensional. In the appendix we use the same techniques to give a cohomological proof of a lower bound, originally due to Brock, on the volume of the mapping torus of a cobounded pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a closed surface in terms of its Teichmüller translation distance.

Asymptotic dimension and small-cancellation for hierarchically hyperbolic spaces and groups

We prove that all hierarchically hyperbolic spaces have finite asymptotic dimension and obtain strong bounds on these dimensions. One application of this result is to obtain the sharpest known bound on the asymptotic dimension of the mapping class group of a finite type surface: improving the bound from exponential to at most quadratic in the complexity of the surface. We also apply the main result to various other hierarchically hyperbolic groups and spaces. We also prove a small-cancellation result namely: if $G$ is a hierarchically hyperbolic group, $H\leq G$ is a suitable hyperbolically embedded subgroup, and $N\triangleleft H$ is "sufficiently deep" in $H$, then $G/\langle\langle N\rangle\rangle$ is a relatively hierarchically hyperbolic group. This new class provides many new examples to which our asymptotic dimension bounds apply. Along the way, we prove new results about the structure of HHSs, for example: the associated hyperbolic spaces are always obtained, up to quasi-isometry, by coning off canonical coarse product regions in the original space (generalizing a relation established by Masur--Minsky between the complex of curves of a surface and Teichmüller space).

Boundaries and automorphisms of hierarchically hyperbolic spaces

Hierarchically hyperbolic spaces provide a common framework for studying mapping class groups of finite type surfaces, Teichmüller space, right-angled Artin groups, and many other cubical groups. Given such a space $\mathcal X$, we build a bordificationcompatible with the hierarchically hyperbolic structure. If $\mathcal X$ is proper, we get a compactification of $\mathcal X$; we also prove that our construction generalizes the Gromov boundary of a hyperbolic space. In our first main set of applications, we introduce a notion of geometrical finiteness for hierarchically hyperbolic subgroups of hierarchically hyperbolic groups in terms of boundary embeddings. As primary examples of geometrical finiteness, we prove that the natural inclusions of finitely generated Veech groups and the Leininger-Reid combination subgroups extend to continuous embeddings of their Gromov boundaries into the boundary of the mapping class group, both of which fail to happen with the Thurston compactification of Teichmüller space. Our second main set of applications are dynamical and structural, built upon our classification of automorphisms of hierarchically hyperbolic spaces and analysis of how the various types of automorphisms act on the boundary. We prove a generalization of the Handel-Mosher "omnibus subgroup theorem" for mapping class groups to all hierarchically hyperbolic groups, obtain a new proof of the Caprace-Sageev rank-rigidity theorem for many CAT(0) cube complexes, and identify the boundary of a hierarchically hyperbolic group as its Poisson boundary; these results rely on a theorem detecting \emph{irreducible axial} elements of a group acting on a hierarchically hyperbolic space (which generalize pseudo-Anosov elements of the mapping class group and rank-one isometries of a cube complex not virtually stabilizing a hyperplane).

Intersection properties of stable subgroups and bounded cohomology

We show that a finite collection of stable subgroups of a finitely generated group has finite height, finite width and bounded packing. We then use knowledge about intersections of conjugates to characterize finite families of quasimorphisms on hyperbolically embedded subgroups that can be to simultaneously extended to the ambient group.

Bounded cohomology and virtually free hyperbolically embedded subgroups

Using a probabilistic argument we show that the second bounded cohomology of an acylindrically hyperbolic group $G$ (e.g., a non-elementary hyperbolic or relatively hyperbolic group, non-exceptional mapping class group, ${\rm Out}(F_n)$, \dots) embeds via the natural restriction maps into the inverse limit of the second bounded cohomologies of its virtually free subgroups, and in fact even into the inverse limit of the second bounded cohomologies of its hyperbolically embedded virtually free subgroups. This result is new and non-trivial even in the case where $G$ is a (non-free) hyperbolic group. The corresponding statement fails in general for the third bounded cohomology, even for surface groups.

Random subgroups of acylindrically hyperbolic groups and hyperbolic embeddings

Let G be an acylindrically hyperbolic group. We consider a random subgroup H in G, generated by a finite collection of independent random walks. We show that, with asymptotic probability one, such a random subgroup H of G is a free group, and the semidirect product of H acting on E(G) is hyperbolically embedded in G, where E(G) is the unique maximal finite normal subgroup of G.

Hierarchically hyperbolic spaces I: curve complexes for cubical groups

In the context of CAT(0) cubical groups, we develop an analogue of the theory of curve complexes and subsurface projections. The role of the subsurfaces is played by a collection of convex subcomplexes called a \emph{factor system}, and the role of the curve graph is played by the \emph{contact graph}. There are a number of close parallels between the contact graph and the curve graph, including hyperbolicity, acylindricity of the action, the existence of hierarchy paths, and a Masur--Minsky-style distance formula. We then define a \emph{hierarchically hyperbolic space}; the class of such spaces includes a wide class of cubical groups (including all virtually compact special groups) as well as mapping class groups and Teichmüller space with any of the standard metrics. We deduce a number of results about these spaces, all of which are new for cubical or mapping class groups, and most of which are new for both. We show that the quasi-Lipschitz image from a ball in a nilpotent Lie group into a hierarchically hyperbolic space lies close to a product of hierarchy geodesics. We also prove a rank theorem for hierarchically hyperbolic spaces; this generalizes results of Behrstock--Minsky, Eskin--Masur--Rafi, Hamenstädt, and Kleiner. We finally prove that each hierarchically hyperbolic group admits an acylindrical action on a hyperbolic space. This acylindricity result is new for cubical groups, in which case the hyperbolic space admitting the action is the contact graph; in the case of the mapping class group, this provides a new proof of a theorem of Bowditch.

Commensurating endomorphisms of acylindrically hyperbolic groups and applications

We prove that the outer automorphism group $Out(G)$ is residually finite when the group $G$ is virtually compact special (in the sense of Haglund and Wise) or when $G$ is isomorphic to the fundamental group of some compact $3$-manifold. To prove these results we characterize commensurating endomorphisms of acylindrically hyperbolic groups. An endomorphism $ϕ$ of a group $G$ is said to be commensurating, if for every $g \in G$ some non-zero power of $ϕ(g)$ is conjugate to a non-zero power of $g$. Given an acylindrically hyperbolic group $G$, we show that any commensurating endomorphism of $G$ is inner modulo a small perturbation. This generalizes a theorem of Minasyan and Osin, which provided a similar statement in the case when $G$ is relatively hyperbolic. We then use this result to study pointwise inner and normal endomorphisms of acylindrically hyperbolic groups.

Infinitely presented graphical small cancellation groups are acylindrically hyperbolic

We prove that infinitely presented graphical $Gr(7)$ small cancellation groups are acylindrically hyperbolic. In particular, infinitely presented classical $C(7)$-groups and, hence, classical $C'(\frac{1}{6})$-groups are acylindrically hyperbolic. We also prove the analogous statements for the larger class of graphical small cancellation presentations over free products. We construct infinitely presented classical $C'(\frac{1}{6})$-groups that provide new examples of divergence functions of groups.

A note on acylindrical hyperbolicity of Mapping Class Groups

The aim of this note is to give the simplest possible proof that Mapping Class Groups of closed hyperbolic surfaces are acylindrically hyperbolic, and more specifically that their curve graphs are hyperbolic and that pseudo-Anosovs act on them as loxodromic WPDs.

Characterising actions on trees yielding non-trivial quasimorphisms

We study the construction of quasimorphisms on groups acting on trees introduced by Monod and Shalom, that we call median quasimorphisms, and in particular we fully characterise actions on trees that give rise to non-trivial median quasimorphisms. Roughly speaking, either the action is highly transitive on geodesics, it fixes a point in the boundary, or there exists an infinite family of non-trivial median quasimorphisms. In particular, in the last case the second bounded cohomology of the group is infinite dimensional as a vector space. As an application, we show that a cocompact lattice in a product of trees only has trivial quasimorphisms if and only if both closures of the projections on the two factors are locally $\infty$-transitive.

Rigidity of high dimensional graph manifolds

We define the class of high dimensional graph manifolds. These are compact smooth manifolds supporting a decomposition into finitely many pieces, each of which is diffeomorphic to the product of a torus with a finite volume hyperbolic manifold with toric cusps. The various pieces are attached together via affine maps of the boundary tori. We require all the hyperbolic factors in the pieces to have dimension at least 3. Our main goal is to study this class of graph manifolds from the viewpoint of rigidity theory. We show that, in high dimensions, the Borel conjecture holds for our graph manifolds. We also show that smooth rigidity holds within the class: two graph manifolds are homotopy equivalent if and only if they are diffeomorphic. We introduce the notion of irreducible graph manifolds, which form a subclass which has better coarse geometric properties. We establish some structure theory for finitely generated groups which are quasi-isometric to the fundamental group of an irreducible graph manifold: any such group has a graph of groups splitting with strong constraints on the edge and vertex groups. Finally, we prove that in every dimension >3 there exist examples of irreducible graph manifolds which do not support any locally CAT(0) metric.

Thickness, relative hyperbolicity, and randomness in Coxeter groups

For right-angled Coxeter groups $W_Γ$, we obtain a condition on $Γ$ that is necessary and sufficient to ensure that $W_Γ$ is thick and thus not relatively hyperbolic. We show that Coxeter groups which are not thick all admit canonical minimal relatively hyperbolic structures; further, we show that in such a structure, the peripheral subgroups are both parabolic (in the Coxeter group-theoretic sense) and strongly algebraically thick. We exhibit a polynomial-time algorithm that decides whether a right-angled Coxeter group is thick or relatively hyperbolic. We analyze random graphs in the Erdós-Rényi model and establish the asymptotic probability that a random right-angled Coxeter group is thick. In the joint appendix we study Coxeter groups in full generality and there we also obtain a dichotomy whereby any such group is either strongly algebraically thick or admits a minimal relatively hyperbolic structure. In this study, we also introduce a notion we call \emph{intrinsic horosphericity} which provides a dynamical obstruction to relative hyperbolicity which generalizes thickness.

Contracting elements and random walks

We define a new notion of contracting element of a group and we show that contracting elements coincide with hyperbolic elements in relatively hyperbolic groups, pseudo-Anosovs in mapping class groups, rank one isometries in groups acting properly on proper CAT(0) spaces, elements acting hyperbolically on the Bass-Serre tree in graph manifold groups. We also define a related notion of weakly contracting element, and show that those coincide with hyperbolic elements in groups acting acylindrically on hyperbolic spaces and with iwips in $Out(F_n)$, $n\geq 3$. We prove that any simple random walk in a non-elementary finitely generated subgroup containing a (weakly) contracting element ends up in a non-(weakly-)contracting element with exponentially decaying probability. Also, we show that each (weakly) contracting element is contained in a hyperbolically embedded elementary subgroup.

Quasi-convexity of hyperbolically embedded subgroups

We show that any infinite order element $g$ of a virtually cyclic hyperbolically embedded subgroup of a group $G$ is Morse, that is to say any quasi-geodesic connecting points in the cyclic group $C$ generated by $g$ stays close to $C$. This answers a question of Dahmani-Guirardel-Osin. What is more, we show that hyperbolically embedded subgroups are quasi-convex. Finally, we give a definition of what it means for a collection of subspaces of a metric space to be hyperbolically embedded and we show that axes of pseudo-Anosovs are hyperbolically embedded in Teichmüller space endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric.
