Knots and non-orientable surfaces in 3-manifolds

In this article, we propose a new approach for describing and understanding knots and links in a 3-manifold through the use of an embedded non-orientable surface. Specifically, we define a plat-like representation based on this non-orientable surface. The method applies to manifolds of the form $M=\mathcal H\cup_{\varphi} \mathcal C(U)$ where $\mathcal H$ is a handlebody, $\mathcal C(U)$ is the mapping cylinder of the orientating two sheeted covering of a non-orientable closed surface $U$ and $\varphi:\partial \mathcal H\to \partial \mathcal C(U)$ is an attaching homeomorphism. We show that, by fixing such a splitting any link in the manifold can be represented as a plat-like closure of an element of the surface braid group of $\partial \mathcal H$. Manifolds of this type were extensively studied by J.H. Rubinstein \cite{rubinstein1978one}, where it is shown that any 3-manifold $M$, with a non-vanishing $H_2(M,\frac{\mathbb{Z}}{2\mathbb{Z}})$ will admit such a splitting. Thus the method is quite general. We provide explicit examples of such embeddings in lens spaces $L(2k,q)$ and the trivial circle bundles over orientable closed surfaces, $\Sigma\times S^1$

Knot quandle decomposition along a torus

We study the structure of the augmented fundamental quandle of a knot whose complement contains an incompressible torus. We obtain the relationship between the fundamental quandle of a satellite knot and the fundamental quandles/groups of its companion and pattern knots. General presentations of the fundamental quandles of a link in a solid torus, a link in a lens space and a satellite knot are described. In the last part of the paper, an algebraic approach to the study of affine quandles is presented and some known results about the Alexander module and quandle colorings are obtained.

A Markov theorem for plat closure of surface braids in Dunwoody and periodic Takahashi manifolds

In this article we deal with the problem of finding equivalence moves for links in Dunwoody and periodic Takahashi manifolds. We represent these manifolds using Heegaard splitting and we represent the embedded links as plat closure of elements in the braid group of the corresponding Heegaard surfaces. More precisely, starting from an open Heegaard diagram for such manifolds, we determine the plat slide equivalence moves algorithmically and compute them explicitly in some cases.

On the axioms of singquandles

In this paper we deal with the notion of singquandles introduced in Indu R. U. Churchill, Mohamed Elhamdadi, Mustafa Hajij, and Sam Nelson, Singular knots and involutive quandles, Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications 26 (2017), no. 14. This is an algebraic structure that naturally axiomatizes Reidemeister moves for singular links, similarly to what happens for ordinary links and quandle structure. We present a new axiomatization that shows different algebraic aspects and simplifies applications. We also reformulate and simplify the axioms for affine singquandles (in particular in the idempotent case).

Kraus operators and symmetric groups

In the contest of open quantum systems, we study a class of Kraus operators whose definition relies on the defining representation of the symmetric groups. We analyze the induced orbits as well as the limit set and the degenerate cases.

Knot quandle decompositions

We show that the fundamental quandle defines a functor from the oriented tangle category to a suitably defined quandle category. Given a tangle decomposition of a link $L$, the fundamental quandle of $L$ may be obtained from the fundamental quandles of tangles. We apply this result to derive a presentation of the fundamental quandle of periodic links, composite knots and satellite knots.

The complexity of orientable graph manifolds

We give an upper bound for the Matveev complexity of the whole class of closed connected orientable prime graph manifolds that is sharp for all 14502 graph manifolds of the Recognizer catalogue (available at \texttt{http://matlas.math.csu.ru/?page=search}).

A Markov theorem for generalized plat decomposition

We prove a Markov theorem for tame links in a connected closed orientable 3-manifold $M$ with respect to a plat-like representation. More precisely, given a genus $g$ Heegaard surface $Σ_g$ for $M$ we represent each link in $M$ as the plat closure of a braid in the surface braid group $B_{g,2n}=π_1(C_{2n}(Σ_g))$ and analyze how to translate the equivalence of links in $M$ under ambient isotopy into an algebraic equivalence in $B_{g,2n}$. First, we study the equivalence problem in $Σ_g\times [0,1]$, and then, to obtain the equivalence in $M$, we investigate how isotopies corresponding to "sliding" along meridian discs change the braid representative. At the end we provide explicit constructions for Heegaard genus 1 manifolds, i.e. lens spaces and $S^2\times S^1$.

On the complexity of non-orientable Seifert fibre spaces

In this paper we deal with Seifert fibre spaces, which are compact 3-manifolds admitting a foliation by circles. We give a combinatorial description for these manifolds in all the possible cases: orientable, non-orientable, closed, with boundary. Moreover, we compute a potentially sharp upper bound for their complexity in terms of the invariants of the combinatorial description, extending to the non-orientable case results by Fominykh and Wiest for the orientable case with boundary and by Martelli and Petronio for the closed orientable case.

Diffeomorphic vs isotopic links in lens spaces

Links in lens spaces may be defined to be equivalent by ambient isotopy or by diffeomorphism of pairs. In the first case, for all the combinatorial representations of links, there is a set of Reidemeister-type moves on diagrams connecting isotopy equivalent links. In this paper we provide a set of moves on disk, band and grid diagrams that connects diffeo equivalent links: there are up to four isotopy equivalent links in each diffeo equivalence class. Moreover, we investigate how the diffeo equivalence relates to the lift of the link in the $3$-sphere: in the particular case of oriented primitive-homologous knots, the lift completely determines the knot class in $L(p,q)$ up to diffeo equivalence, and thus only four possible knots up to isotopy equivalence can have the same lift.

Alexander representation of tangles

A tangle is an oriented 1-submanifold of the cylinder whose endpoints lie on the two disks in the boundary of the cylinder. Using an algebraic tool developed by Lescop, we extend the Burau representation of braids to a functor from the category of oriented tangles to the category of Z[t,t^{-1}]-modules. For (1,1)-tangles (i.e., tangles with one endpoint on each disk) this invariant coincides with the Alexander polynomial of the link obtained by taking the closure of the tangle. We use the notion of plat position of a tangle to give a constructive proof of invariance in this case.

Equivalence of two diagram representations of links in lens spaces and essential invariants

In this paper we study the relation between two diagrammatic representations of links in lens spaces: the disk diagram and the grid diagram and we find how to pass from one to the other. We also investigate whether the HOMFLY-PT invariant and the Link Floer Homology are essential invariants, that is, we try to understand if these invariants are able to distinguish links in $L(p,q)$ covered by the same link in $\mathbf{S}^3$. In order to do so, we generalize the combinatorial definition of Knot Floer Homology in lens spaces to the case of links and we analyze how both the invariants change when we switch the orientation of the link.

On knots and links in lens spaces

In this paper we study some aspects of knots and links in lens spaces. Namely, if we consider lens spaces as quotient of the unit ball $B^{3}$ with suitable identification of boundary points, then we can project the links on the equatorial disk of $B^{3}$, obtaining a regular diagram for them. In this contest, we obtain a complete finite set of Reidemeister type moves establishing equivalence, up to ambient isotopy, a Wirtinger type presentation for the fundamental group of the complement of the link and a diagrammatic method giving the first homology group. We also compute Alexander polynomial and twisted Alexander polynomials of this class of links, showing their correlation with Reidemeister torsion.

Extending homeomorphisms from punctured surfaces to handlebodies

Let $\textup{H}_g$ be a genus $g$ handlebody and $\textup{MCG}_{2n}(\textup{T}_g)$ be the group of the isotopy classes of orientation preserving homeomorphisms of $\textup{T}_g=\partial\textup{H}_g$, fixing a given set of $2n$ points. In this paper we find a finite set of generators for $\mathcal{E}_{2n}^g$, the subgroup of $\textup{MCG}_{2n}(\textup{T}_g)$ consisting of the isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of $\textup{T}_g$ admitting an extension to the handlebody and keeping fixed the union of $n$ disjoint properly embedded trivial arcs. This result generalizes a previous one obtained by the authors for $n=1$. The subgroup $\mathcal{E}_{2n}^g$ turns out to be important for the study of knots and links in closed 3-manifolds via $(g,n)$-decompositions. In fact, the links represented by the isotopy classes belonging to the same left cosets of $\mathcal{E}_{2n}^g$ in $\textup{MCG}_{2n}(\textup{T}_g)$ are equivalent.

Complexity, Heegaard diagrams and generalized Dunwoody manifolds

We deal with Matveev complexity of compact orientable 3-manifolds represented via Heegaard diagrams. This lead us to the definition of modified Heegaard complexity of Heegaard diagrams and of manifolds. We define a class of manifolds which are generalizations of Dunwoody manifolds, including cyclic branched coverings of two-bridge knots and links, torus knots, some pretzel knots, and some theta-graphs. Using modified Heegaard complexity, we obtain upper bounds for their Matveev complexity, which linearly depend on the order of the covering. Moreover, using homology arguments due to Matveev and Pervova we obtain lower bounds.

Extending homeomorphisms from 2-punctured surfaces to handlebodies

Let F a closed connected orientable surface bounding a genus g handlebody H. In this paper we find a finite set of generators for the subgroup E(2,g) of the pure mapping class group of the twice punctured torus PMCG(2,g), consisting of the isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of F which admit an extension to H keeping a properly embedded trivial arc fixed. This subgroup turns out to be important for the study of knots in closed 3-manifolds via (g,1)-decomposition. In fact, the knots represented by the isotopy classes belonging to the same left cosets of E(2,g) in PMCG(2,g) are equivalent.

Representations of (1,1)-knots

We present two different representations of (1,1)-knots and study some connections between them. The first representation is algebraic: every (1,1)-knot is represented by an element of the pure mapping class group of the twice punctured torus. The second representation is parametric: every (1,1)-knot can be represented by a 4-tuple of integer parameters. The strict connection of this representation with the class of Dunwoody manifolds is illustrated. The above representations are explicitly obtained in some interesting cases, including two-bridge knots and torus knots.

The Alexander polynomial of (1,1)-knots

In this paper we investigate the Alexander polynomial of (1,1)-knots, which are knots lying in a 3-manifold with genus one at most, admitting a particular decomposition. More precisely, we study the connections between the Alexander polynomial and a polynomial associated to a cyclic presentation of the fundamental group of an n-fold strongly-cyclic covering branched over the knot, which we call the n-cyclic polynomial. In this way, we generalize to all (1,1)-knots, with the only exception of those lying in S^2\times S^1, a result obtained by J. Minkus for 2-bridge knots and extended by the author and M. Mulazzani to the case of (1,1)-knots in the 3-sphere. As corollaries some properties of the Alexander polynomial of knots in the 3-sphere are extended to the case of (1,1)-knots in lens spaces.
