AI Persuasive Framing in Collective Dilemmas

AI agents are promising tools that can act as flexible behavioral nudges to enhance human cooperation in addressing large-scale societal problems. However, evidence on whether AI agents can effectively boost cooperation remains mixed. We recruited 1,283 participants to play iterated Collective Risk Games in small groups, testing whether AI assistants could nudge participants toward cooperation. By using persuasive framing personalized to each player's Social Value Orientation profile, the AI interventions significantly increased contributions and group success rates. These cooperative effects were short-lived, however, fading after the first few rounds. Strikingly, when the AI treatments were reconfigured to promote selfish behavior through exculpatory framing, the negative effects on contributions and group success were larger and substantially more persistent, particularly for personalized interventions. This asymmetry between prosocial and antisocial persuasion highlights the dual-use risks of AI systems designed to influence group behavior in collective action settings.

Political Persuasion and Endorsement in Large Language Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly employed as proxies for human behavior in computational social science. However, their tendency to internalize biases from training data raises concerns about their reliability in politically sensitive domains, specifically in regard to their susceptibility to persuasive language. In this work, we examine whether LLMs endorse persuasion-infused messages and whether partisan persona prompting modulates such endorsement. We evaluate six LLMs from different geographic regions on content annotated with persuasion techniques drawn from real-world media sources, measuring the likelihood of endorsement using a five-point Likert scale. The models are prompted as either a neutral social media user or as a user with left- or right-leaning political views. Results show that without political conditioning, LLMs generally do not endorse messages containing persuasion techniques, though model-level differences emerge, and that partisan persona prompting increases polarization of endorsement, particularly for persuasion-infused content. Endorsement further varies by persuasion technique and topic. These findings raise concerns about agentic LLM deployments in politically sensitive environments and complicate their use as reliable simulators of human political cognition.

Mapping Regional Disparities in Discounted Grocery Products

Food waste represents a major challenge to global climate resilience, accounting for almost 10% of annual greenhouse gas emissions. The retail sector is a critical player, mediating product flows between producers and consumers, where supply chain inefficiencies can shape which items are put on sale. Yet how these dynamics vary across geographic contexts remains largely unexplored. Here, we analyze data from Denmark's largest retail group on near-expiry products put on sale. We uncover the geospatial variations using a dual-clustering approach. We characterize multi-scale spatial relationships in retail organization by correlating store clustering -- measured using shortest-path distances along the street network -- with product clustering based on promotion co-occurrence patterns. Using a bipartite network approach, we identify three regional store clusters, and use percolation thresholds to corroborate the scale of their spatial separation. We find that stores in rural communities put meat and dairy products on sale up to 2.2 times more frequently than metropolitan areas. In contrast, metropolitan and capital regions lean toward convenience products, which have more balanced nutritional profiles but less favorable environmental impacts. By linking geographic context to retail inventory, we provide evidence that reducing food waste requires interventions tailored to local retail dynamics, highlighting the importance of region-specific sustainability strategies.

Mapping the Climate Change Landscape on TikTok

Social media platforms shape climate action discourse. Mapping these online conversations is essential for effective communication strategies. TikTok's climate discussions are particularly relevant given its young, climate-concerned audience. In this work, we collect the first TikTok dataset on climate topics. We collected 590K videos from 14K creators along with their follower networks. By applying topic modeling to the video descriptions, we map the topics discussed on the platform on a climate taxonomy that we construct by consolidating existing categorizations. Results show TikTok creators primarily approach climate through the angle of lifestyle and dietary choices. By examining semantic connections between topics, we identified non-climate "gateway" topics that could draw new audiences into climate discussions.
