Wake Perturbations in Laser- and Beam-Driven Plasma Wakefield Accelerators: A Symmetry-Based Multipole Classification

We review beam-quality physics in laser-driven (LWFA) and beam-driven (PWFA) plasma wakefield accelerators through the symmetry group of the idealised blowout wake -- axisymmetry $\mathrm{SO}(2)_ϕ$, adiabatic longitudinal translation, and propagation-direction parity. Transverse perturbations of the wake are classified by an integer azimuthal multipole order $m$ labelling the irreducible representations of $\mathrm{SO}(2)_ϕ$, with the lowest beam-quality observables coupling at a specific multipole: the bunch centroid at $m=1$, cross-plane emittance coupling at $m=2$. A symplectic analogy relates transverse matching to longitudinal beam loading. Several phenomena common to LWFA and PWFA -- hose instabilities, pulse-front-tilt jitter, spot-asymmetry emittance growth, polarisation-dependent centroid motion, resonant cross-plane mixing -- populate the two lowest non-trivial $m$-channels and admit a unified discussion. The positron-witness problem reorganises in the same language: each known mitigation abandons one specific feature of the uniform-density blowout, drawn from a finite set. The classification also raises the possibility of an $m=3$ response channel whose magnitude remains open. We note the connection to symmetry-equivariant Bayesian optimisation of plasma accelerators.

Transverse envelope dynamics of beam slices in a uniform charged ellipsoidal model of the plasma bubble regime

We consider a pair of driver/witness electron bunches propagating in an ionized gas background a configuration similar to the one produced in a capillary discharge where a plasma oscillation has been excited by a driving pulse. We assume as in the plasma nonlinear regime that the plasma electrons behind the driver are completely expelled and an ellipsoidal cavity filled with ions only is formed. The fields are linear in both longitudinal and transverse directions, at least in the region of interest for particle acceleration, as the one produced by a uniform ion distribution within a uniformly charged ellipsoidal volume. The fields produced by the ions and experienced by a witness electron beam are purely electrostatic, being the ions at rest in the laboratory frame on the time scale of interest and it can be represented with the field distribution produced by a 3D charged ellipsoidal. The energy spread and emittance degradation has been studied by slicing the bunch in an array of cylinders and solving envelope equations for each bunch slice. The properties of transverse envelope and emittance oscillations and energy spread degradation have been analyzed together with the related matching conditions for optimal transport and acceleration.

Numerical Studies for EuPRAXIA@SPARC\_LAB Plasma Beam Driven Working Point

The realization of a plasma based user facility on the model of EuPRAXIA@SPARC\_LAB requires to design a working point for the operation that allows to get an high accelerating gradient preserving a low emittance and low energy spread of the accelerated beam. Such beam is supposed to pilot a soft x-ray free electron laser with a wavelength of 2-\SI{4}{\nano\meter}. In this work several simulation scans are presented, varying at the same time the plasma density and driver-witness separation in order to show that, in a realistic working point for EuPRAXIA@SPARC\_LAB, it is possible to find an ideal compromise for a witness with a peak current >1kA that allows to preserve the energy spread of the core (80\% of the charge) below 0.1\%, while maintaining an accelerating gradient inside the plasma module around of 1 GV/m. The study is completed with a parametric analysis with the aim of establishing the stability requirements of the RF working point and the plasma channel in order to preserve the energy jitter at the same level of the energy spread.

Evaluation of the Transfer Matrix of a Plasma Ramp with Squared Cosine Shape via an Approximate Solution of the Mathieu Differential Equation

The high longitudinal electric fields generated in plasma wakefields are very attractive for a new generation of high gradient plasma based accelerators. On the other hand, the strong transverse fields increase the demand for a proper matching device in order to avoid the spoiling of beam transverse quality. A solution can be provided by the use of a plasma ramp, a region at the plasma injection/extraction with smoothly increasing/decreasing plasma density. The transport of a beam inside a plasma ramp, beside its parameters, depends on the profile of the ramp itself. Establishing the transfer matrix for a plasma ramp represents a very useful tool in order to evaluate the beam evolution in the plasma. In this paper a study of a cosine squared ramp is presented. An approximate solution of the transverse equation of motion is evaluated and exploited to provide a simple transfer matrix for the plasma ramp. The transfer matrix is then employed to demonstrate that this kind of ramp has the effect to minimize the emittance growth due to betatron dephasing. The behavior of a squared cosine plasma ramp will be compared with an experimentally measured plasma ramp profile in order to validate the applicability of the transfer matrix to real cases.

Lattice Boltzmann simulations of Plasma Wakefield Acceleration

We explore a novel simulation route for Plasma Wakefield Acceleration (PWFA) by using the computational method known as the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM). LBM is based on a discretization of the continuum kinetic theory while assuring the convergence towards hydrodynamics for coarse-grained fields (i.e., density, velocity, etc.). LBM is an established numerical analysis tool in computational fluid dynamics, able to efficiently bridge between kinetic theory and hydrodynamics, but its application in the context of PWFA has never been investigated so far. This paper aims at filling this gap. Results of LBM simulations for PWFA are discussed and compared with those of a code (Architect) implementing a Cold Fluid (CF) model for the plasma. In the hydrodynamic framework, we discuss the importance of regularization effects related to diffusion properties intrinsic of the LBM, allowing to go beyond the traditional CF approximations. Issues on computational efficiency are also addressed.

Light-Front Transverse Momentum Distributions for ${\cal J}$=1/2 Hadronic Systems in Valence Approximation

The semi-inclusive correlator for a ${\cal J}$=1/2 bound-system, composed by A spin-1/2 fermions, is linearly expressed in terms of the light-front Poincaré covariant spin-dependent spectral function, in valence approximation. The light-front spin-dependent spectral function is fully determined by six scalar functions that allow for a complete description of the six T-even transverse-momentum distributions, suitable for a detailed investigation of the dynamics inside the bound system. The application of the developed formalism to a case with a sophisticated dynamical content, like $^3$He, reaches two goals: (i) to illustrate a prototype of an investigation path for gathering a rich wealth of information on the dynamics and also finding valuable constraints to be exploited from the phenomenological standpoint; (ii) to support for the three-nucleon system a dedicated experimental effort for obtaining a detailed 3D picture in momentum space. In particular, the orbital-angular momentum decomposition of the bound state can be studied through the assessment of relations among the transverse-momentum distributions, as well as the relevance of the relativistic effect generated by the implementation of macrocausality. A fresh evaluation of the longitudinal and transverse polarizations of the neutron and proton is also provided, confirming essentially the values used in the standard procedure for extracting the neutron structure functions from both deep-inelastic scattering and semi-inclusive reactions, in the same kinematical regime.

Neutron Parton Structure And The Light-Front Spectral Function Of 3He

Semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He is studied in a non-relativistic framework, using a distorted spin-dependent spectral function for 3He to take care of the final state interaction between the observed pion and the remnant. A simple procedure is shown to be valuable for the extraction of Sivers and Collins asymmetries for the neutron fromthe corresponding asymmetries for 3He. To extend this study in a relativistic framework, a novel approach for a Poincaré covariant description of nuclear dynamics is presented, based on the light-front Hamiltonian dynamics. The key quantity is the light-front spectral function, where both normalization and momentum sum rule can be satisfied at the same time. Preliminary results are discussed for an initial analysis of the role of relativity in the EMC effect in 3He, and the generalization of the procedure for the extraction of neutron asymmetries within the light-front dynamics is outlined.

Light-Front Dynamics and the 3He Spectral Function

Two topics are presented. The first one is a novel approach for a Poincare' covariant description of nuclear dynamics based on light-front Hamiltonian dynamics. The key quantity is the light-front spectral function, where both normalization and momentum sum rule can be satisfied at the same time. Preliminary results are discussed for an initial analysis of the role of relativity in the EMC effect in 3He. A second issue, very challenging, is considered in a non-relativistic framework, namely a distorted spin-dependent spectral function for 3He in order to take care of the final state interaction between the observed pion and the remnant in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He. The generalization of the analysis within the light-front dynamics is outlined.

Three--Dimensional parton structure of light nuclei

Two promising directions beyond inclusive deep inelastic scattering experiments, aimed at unveiling the three dimensional structure of the bound nucleon, are reviewed, considering in particular the $^3$He nucleus. The 3D structure in coordinate space can be accessed through deep exclusive processes, whose non-perturbative part is encoded in generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In this way, the distribution of partons in the transverse plane can be obtained. As an example, coherent deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) off $^3$He nuclei, important to access the neutron GPDs, will be discussed. In Impulse Approximation (IA), the sum of two GPDs of $^3$He, $H$ and $E$, at low momentum transfer, turns out to be dominated by the neutron contribution. Besides, a technique, able to take into account the nuclear effects included in the Impulse Approximation analysis, has been developed. The spin dependent GPD $\tilde H$ of $^3$He is also found to be largely dominated, at low momentum transfer, by the neutron contribution. Semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes access the momentum space 3D structure parameterized through transverse momentum dependent parton distributions. A distorted spin-dependent spectral function has been recently introduced for $^3$He, in a non-relativistic framework, to take care of the final state interaction between the observed pion and the remnant in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off transversely polarized $^3$He. The calculation of the Sivers and Collins single spin asymmetries for $^3$He, and a straightforward procedure to effectively take into account nuclear dynamics and final state interactions, will be reviewed. The Light-front dynamics generalization of the analysis is also addressed.

Polarized $^3$He target and final state interactions in SiDIS

Jefferson Lab (JLab) is starting a wide experimental program aimed at studying the neutron's structure, with a great emphasis on the extraction of the parton transverse-momentum distributions (TMDs). To this end, Semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SiDIS) experiments on polarized $^3$He will be carried out, providing, together with proton and deuteron data, a sound flavor decomposition of the TMDs. Given the expected high statistical accuracy, it is crucial to disentangle nuclear and partonic degrees of freedom to get an accurate theoretical description of both initial and final states. In this contribution, a preliminary study of the Final State Interaction (FSI) in the standard SiDIS, where a pion (or a Kaon) is detected in the final state is presented, in view of constructing a realistic description of the nuclear initial and final states.

Light-Front spin-dependent Spectral Function and Nucleon Momentum Distributions for a Three-Body System

Poincare' covariant definitions for the spin-dependent spectral function and for the momentum distributions within the light-front Hamiltonian dynamics are proposed for a three-fermion bound system, starting from the light-front wave function of the system. The adopted approach is based on the Bakamjian-Thomas construction of the Poincare' generators, that allows one to easily import the familiar and wide knowledge on the nuclear interaction into a light-front framework. The proposed formalism can find useful applications in refined nuclear calculations, like the ones needed for evaluating the EMC effect or the semi-inclusive deep inelastic cross sections with polarized nuclear targets, since remarkably the light-front unpolarized momentum distribution by definition fulfills both normalization and momentum sum rules. It is also shown a straightforward generalization of the definition of the light-front spectral function to an A-nucleon system.

The 3He spectral function in light-front dynamics

A distorted spin-dependent spectral function for 3He is considered for the extraction of the transverse-momentum dependent parton distributions in the neutron from semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He at finite momentum transfers, where final state interactions are taken into account. The generalization of the analysis to a Poincaré covariant framework within the light-front dynamics is outlined.

A Light-Front approach to the $^3$He spectral function

The analysis of semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized $^3$He at finite momentum transfers, aimed at the extraction of the quark transverse-momentum distributions in the neutron, requires the use of a distorted spin-dependent spectral function for $^3$He, which takes care of the final state interaction effects. This quantity is introduced in the non-relativistic case, and its generalization in a Poincaré covariant framework, in plane wave impulse approximation for the moment being, is outlined. Studying the light-front spin-dependent spectral function for a J=1/2 system, such as the nucleon, it is found that, within the light-front dynamics with a fixed number of constituents and in the valence approximation, only three of the six leading twist T-even transverse-momentum distributions are independent.

The possibility of improving the description of the semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He, that provides information on the neutron single spin asymmetries, is illustrated. In particular, the analysis at finite momentum transfers in a Poincare' covariant framework is outlined and a generalized eikonal approach to include final state interaction is presented.

Quark Transverse Momentum Distributions inside a nucleon : a Light-Front Hamiltonian Dynamics study

Through an impulse approximation analysis of single spin Sivers and Collins asymmetries in the Bjorken limit, the possibility to extract the quark transverse-momentum distributions in the neutron from semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He is illustrated. The analysis is generalized to finite momentum transfers in a light-front Poincare' covariant framework, defining the light-front spin-dependent spectral function of a J=1/2 system. The definition of the light-front spin-dependent spectral function for constituent quarks in the nucleon allows us to show that, within the light-front dynamics, only three of the six leading twist T-even transverse-momentum distributions are independent.
