Improved stability versions of the Prékopa-Leindler inequality

We consider the problem of stability for the Prékopa-Leindler inequality. Exploiting properties of the transport map between radially decreasing functions and a suitable functional version of the trace inequality, we obtain a uniform stability exponent for the Prékopa-Leindler inequality. Our result yields an exponent not only uniform in the dimension but also in the log-concavity parameter $τ= \min(λ,1-λ)$ associated with its respective version of the Prékopa-Leindler inequality. As a further application of our methods, we prove a sharp stability result for log-concave functions in dimension 1, which also extends to a sharp stability result for log-concave radial functions in higher dimensions.

Constraint maps with free boundaries: the Bernoulli case

In this manuscript, we delve into the study of maps $u\in W^{1,2}(Ω;\overline M)$ that minimize the Alt-Caffarelli energy functional $$ \int_Ω(|Du|^2 + q^2 χ_{u^{-1}(M)})\,dx, $$ under the condition that the image $u(Ω)$ is confined within $\overline M$. Here, $Ω$ denotes a bounded domain in the ambient space $\mathbb{R}^n$ (with $n\geq 1$), and $M$ represents a smooth domain in the target space $\mathbb{R}^m$ (where $m\geq 2$). Since our minimizing constraint maps coincide with harmonic maps in the interior of the coincidence set, ${\rm int}(u^{-1}(\partial M))$, such maps are prone to developing discontinuities due to their inherent nature. This research marks the commencement of an in-depth analysis of potential singularities that might arise within and around the free boundary. Our first significant contribution is the validity of a $\varepsilon$-regularity theorem. This theorem is founded on a novel method of Lipschitz approximation near points exhibiting low energy. Utilizing this approximation and extending the analysis through a bootstrapping approach, we show Lipschitz continuity of our maps whenever the energy is small energy. Our subsequent key finding reveals that, whenever the complement of $M$ is uniformly convex and of class $C^3$, the maps minimizing the Alt-Caffarelli energy with a positive parameter $q$ exhibit Lipschitz continuity within a universally defined neighborhood of the non-coincidence set $u^{-1}(M)$. In particular, this Lipschitz continuity extends to the free boundary. A noteworthy consequence of our findings is the smoothness of flat free boundaries and of the resulting image maps.

Constraint maps: singularities vs free boundaries

Energy-minimizing constraint maps are a natural extension of the obstacle problem within a vectorial framework. Due to inherent topological constraints, these maps manifest a diverse structure that includes singularities similar to harmonic maps, branch points reminiscent of minimal surfaces, and the intricate free-boundary behavior of the obstacle problem. The complexity of these maps poses significant challenges to their analysis. In this paper, we first focus on constraint maps with uniformly convex obstacles and establish continuity (and therefore higher-order regularity) within a uniform neighborhood of the free boundary. More precisely, thanks to a new quantitative unique continuation principle near singularities (which is new even in the setting of classical harmonic maps), we prove that, in the uniformly convex setting, topological singularities can only lie in the interior of the contact set. We then establish the optimality of this result. Second, while exploring the structure of the free boundary, we investigate the presence of branch points and show how they lead to completely new types of singularities not present in the scalar case.

Sharp stability of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality via optimal mass transportation

The Brunn-Minkowski inequality, applicable to bounded measurable sets $A$ and $B$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$, states that $|A+B|^{1/d} \geq |A|^{1/d}+|B|^{1/d}$. Equality is achieved if and only if $A$ and $B$ are convex and homothetic sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The concept of stability in this context concerns how, when approaching equality, sets $A$ and $B$ are close to homothetic convex sets. In a recent breakthrough [FvHT23], the authors of this paper proved the following folklore conjectures on the sharp stability for the Brunn-Minkowski inequality: (1) A linear stability result concerning the distance from $A$ and $B$ to their respective convex hulls. (2) A quadratic stability result concerning the distance from $A$ and $B$ to their common convex hull. As announced in [FvHT23], in the present paper, we leverage (1) in conjunction with a novel optimal transportation approach to offer an alternative proof for (2).

A short review on Improvements and stability for some interpolation inequalities

In this paper, we present recent stability results with explicit and dimensionally sharp constants and optimal norms for the Sobolev inequality and for the Gaussian logarithmic Sobolev inequality obtained by the authors in [24]. The stability for the Gaussian logarithmic Sobolev inequality was obtained as a byproduct of the stability for the Sobolev inequality. Here we give a new, direct, alternative proof. We also discuss improved versions of interpolation inequalities based on the carré du champ method.

On Optimal Transport Maps Between 1 /d-Concave Densities

In this paper, we extend the scope of Caffarelli's contraction theorem, which provides a measure of the Lipschitz constant for optimal transport maps between log-concave probability densities in $\R^d$. Our focus is on a broader category of densities, specifically those that are $\nicefrac{1}{d}$-concave and can be represented as $V^{-d}$, where $V$ is convex. By setting appropriate conditions, we derive linear or sublinear limitations for the optimal transport map. This leads us to a comprehensive Lipschitz estimate that aligns with the principles established in Caffarelli's theorem.

Regularity near the fixed boundary for transmission systems

Given $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq 2$, $D\subset Ω$ open, and $u:Ω\to \mathbb{R}^m$, we study elliptic systems of the type $$ {\rm div} \big( ( A + (B- A)χ_D)\nabla u\big) = 0 \quad \text{in $Ω\cap B_1$,} $$ for some uniformly elliptic tensors $A$ and $B$ with Hölder continuous entries. We show that, given appropriate boundary data, the Lipschitz regularity of $u$ inside $B_1 \cap D$ is transmitted to $B_{1/2}\cap Ω$ up to the boundary of $Ω$. This corresponds to the boundary counterpart of the interior regularity results in Figalli-Kim-Shahgholian, Nonlinear Anal. 2022.

Strong stability of convexity with respect to the perimeter

Let $E\subset \mathbb R^n$, $n\ge 2$, be a set of finite perimeter with $|E|=|B|$, where $B$ denotes the unit ball. When $n=2$, since convexification decreases perimeter (in the class of open connected sets), it is easy to prove the existence of a convex set $F$, with $|E|=|F|$, such that $$ P(E) - P(F) \ge c\,|EΔF|, \qquad c>0. $$ Here we prove that, when $n\ge 3$, there exists a convex set $F$, with $|E|=|F|$, such that $$ P(E) - P(F) \ge c(n) \,f\big(|EΔF|\big), \qquad c(n)>0,\qquad f(t)=\frac{t}{|\log t|} \text{ for }t \ll 1. $$ Moreover, one can choose $F$ to be a small $C^2$-deformation of the unit ball. Furthermore, this estimate is essentially sharp as we can show that the inequality above fails for $f(t)=t.$ Interestingly, the proof of our result relies on a new stability estimate for Alexandrov's Theorem on constant mean curvature sets.

Sharp quantitative stability of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality

The Brunn-Minkowski inequality states that for bounded measurable sets $A$ and $B$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, we have $|A+B|^{1/n} \geq |A|^{1/n}+|B|^{1/n}$. Also, equality holds if and only if $A$ and $B$ are convex and homothetic sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. The stability of this statement is a well-known problem that has attracted much attention in recent years. This paper gives a conclusive answer by proving the sharp stability result for the Brunn-Minkowski inequality on arbitrary sets.

The Cauchy-Dirichlet Problem for the Fast Diffusion Equation on Bounded Domains

The Fast Diffusion Equation (FDE) $u_t= Δu^m$, with $m\in (0,1)$, is an important model for singular nonlinear (density dependent) diffusive phenomena. Here, we focus on the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem posed on smooth bounded Euclidean domains. In addition to its physical relevance, there are many aspects that make this equation particularly interesting from the pure mathematical perspective. For instance: mass is lost and solutions may extinguish in finite time, merely integrable data can produce unbounded solutions, classical forms of Harnack inequalities (and other regularity estimates) fail to be true, etc. In this paper, we first provide a survey (enriched with an extensive bibliography) focussing on the more recent results about existence, uniqueness, boundedness and positivity (i.e., Harnack inequalities, both local and global), and higher regularity estimates (also up to the boundary and possibly up to the extinction time). We then prove new global (in space and time) Harnack estimates in the subcritical regime. In the last section, we devote a special attention to the asymptotic behaviour, from the first pioneering results to the latest sharp results, and we present some new asymptotic results in the subcritical case.

Regularity theory for nonlocal obstacle problems with critical and subcritical scaling

Despite significant recent advances in the regularity theory for obstacle problems with integro-differential operators, some fundamental questions remained open. On the one hand, there was a lack of understanding of parabolic problems with critical scaling, such as the obstacle problem for $\partial_t+\sqrt{-Δ}$. No regularity result for free boundaries was known for parabolic problems with such scaling. On the other hand, optimal regularity estimates for solutions (to both parabolic and elliptic problems) relied strongly on monotonicity formulas and, therefore, were known only in some specific cases. In this paper, we present a novel and unified approach to answer these open questions and, at the same time, to treat very general operators, recovering as particular cases most previously known regularity results on nonlocal obstacle problems.

Regularity Properties of Monotone Measure-preserving Maps

In this note, we extend the regularity theory for monotone measure-preserving maps, also known as optimal transports for the quadratic cost optimal transport problem, to the case when the support of the target measure is an arbitrary convex domain and, on the low-regularity end, between domains carrying certain invariant measures.

Constraint maps with free boundaries: the obstacle case

This paper revives a four-decade-old problem concerning regularity theory for (continuous) constraint maps with free boundaries. Dividing the map into two parts, the distance part and the projected image to the constraint, one can prove various properties for each component. As already pointed out in the literature, the distance part falls under the classical obstacle problem, which is well-studied by classical methods. A perplexing issue, untouched in the literature, is the properties of the projected image and its higher regularity, which we show to be at most of class $C^{2,1}$. In arbitrary dimensions, we prove that the image map is globally of class $W^{3,BMO}$, and locally of class $C^{2,1}$ around the regular part of the free boundary. The issue becomes more delicate around singular points, and we resolve it in two dimensions. In the appendix, we extend some of our results to what we call leaky maps.

Infinite-width limit of deep linear neural networks

This paper studies the infinite-width limit of deep linear neural networks initialized with random parameters. We obtain that, when the number of neurons diverges, the training dynamics converge (in a precise sense) to the dynamics obtained from a gradient descent on an infinitely wide deterministic linear neural network. Moreover, even if the weights remain random, we get their precise law along the training dynamics, and prove a quantitative convergence result of the linear predictor in terms of the number of neurons. We finally study the continuous-time limit obtained for infinitely wide linear neural networks and show that the linear predictors of the neural network converge at an exponential rate to the minimal $\ell_2$-norm minimizer of the risk.

On the prescribed negative Gauss curvature problem for graphs

We revisit the problem of prescribing negative Gauss curvature for graphs embedded in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ when $n\geq 2$. The problem reduces to solving a fully nonlinear Monge-Ampère equation that becomes hyperbolic in the case of negative curvature. We show that the linearization around a graph with Lorentzian Hessian can be written as a geometric wave equation for a suitable Lorentzian metric in dimensions $n\geq 3$. Using energy estimates for the linearized equation and a version of the Nash-Moser iteration, we show the local solvability for the fully nonlinear equation. Finally, we discuss some obstructions and perspectives on the global problem.

Complete classification of global solutions to the obstacle problem

The characterization of global solutions to the obstacle problems in $\mathbb{R}^N$, or equivalently of null quadrature domains, has been studied over more than 90 years. In this paper we give a conclusive answer to this problem by proving the following long-standing conjecture: The coincidence set of a global solution to the obstacle problem is either a half-space, an ellipsoid, a paraboloid, or a cylinder with an ellipsoid or a paraboloid as base.

Isoperimetry and stability properties of balls with respect to nonlocal energies

We obtain a sharp quantitative isoperimetric inequality for nonlocal $s$-perimeters, uniform with respect to $s$ bounded away from $0$. This allows us to address local and global minimality properties of balls with respect to the volume-constrained minimization of a free energy consisting of a nonlocal $s$-perimeter plus a non-local repulsive interaction term. In the particular case $s =1$ the $s$-perimeter coincides with the classical perimeter, and our results improve the ones of Knüpfer and Muratov concerning minimality of balls of small volume in isoperimetric problems with a competition between perimeter and a nonlocal potential term. More precisely, their result is extended to its maximal range of validity concerning the type of nonlocal potentials considered, and is also generalized to the case where local perimeters are replaced by their nonlocal counterparts.
