Generalized Freudenthal duality for rotating extremal black holes

Freudenthal duality (FD) is a non-linear symmetry of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extremal dyonic black holes (BHs) in Maxwell-Einstein-scalar theories in four space-time dimensions realized as an anti-involutive map in the symplectic space of electric-magnetic BH charges. In this paper, we generalize FD to the class of rotating (stationary) extremal BHs, both in the under- and over-rotating regime, defining a (generalized) rotating FD (generally, non-anti-involutive) map (RFD), which also acts on the BH angular momentum. We prove that the RFD map is unique, and we compute the explicit expression of its non-linear action on the angular momentum itself. Interestingly, in the non-rotating limit, RFD bifurcates into the usual, non-rotating FD branch and into a spurious branch, named "golden" branch, mapping a non-rotating (static) extremal BH to an under-rotating (stationary) extremal BH, in which the ratio between the angular momentum and the non-rotating entropy is the square root of the golden ratio. Finally, we investigate the possibility of inducing transitions between the under- and over-rotating regimes by means of RFD, obtaining a no-go result.

Jordan meets Freudenthal. A Black Hole Exceptional Story

Within the extremal black hole attractors arising in ungauged $\mathcal{N}\geqslant 2$-extended Maxwell Einstein supergravity theories in $3+1$ space-time dimensions, we provide an overview of the stratification of the electric-magnetic charge representation space into "large" orbits and related "moduli spaces", under the action of the (continuous limit of the) non-compact $U$-duality Lie group. While each "large" orbit of the $U$-duality supports a class of attractors, the corresponding "moduli space" is the proper subspace of the scalar manifold spanned by those scalar fields on which the Attractor Mechanism is inactive. We present the case study concerning $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity theories with symmetric vector multiplets' scalar manifold, which in all cases (with the exception of the minimally coupled models) have the electric-magnetic charge representation of $U$-duality fitting into a reduced Freudenthal triple system over a cubic (simple or semi-simple) Jordan algebra.

Vinberg's T-Algebras. From Exceptional Periodicity to Black Hole Entropy

We introduce the so-called Magic Star (MS) projection within the root lattice of finite-dimensional exceptional Lie algebras, and relate it to rank-3 simple and semi-simple Jordan algebras. By relying on the Bott periodicity of reality and conjugacy properties of spinor representations, we present the so-called Exceptional Periodicity (EP) algebras, which are finite-dimensional algebras, violating the Jacobi identity, and providing analternative with respect to Kac-Moody infinite-dimensional Lie algebras. Remarkably, also EP algebras can be characterized in terms of a MS projection, exploiting special Vinberg T-algebras, a class of generalized Hermitian matrix algebras introduced by Vinberg in the '60s within his theory of homogeneous convex cones. As physical applications, we highlight the role of the invariant norm of special Vinberg T-algebras in Maxwell-Einstein-scalar theories in 5 space-time dimensions, in which the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extremal black strings can be expressed in terms of the cubic polynomial norm of the T-algebras.

Collineation groups of octonionic and split-octonionic planes

We present a Veronese formulation of the octonionic and split-octonionic projective and hyperbolic planes. This formulation of the incidence planes highlights the relationship between the Veronese vectors and the rank-1 elements of the Albert algebras over octonions and split-octonions, yielding to a clear formulation of the relationship with the real forms of the Lie groups arising as collineation groups of these planes. The Veronesean representation also provides a novel and minimal construction of the same octonionic and split-octonionic planes, by exploiting two symmetric composition algebras: the Okubo algebra and the paraoctonionic algebra. Besides the intrinsic mathematical relevance of this construction of the real forms of the Cayley-Moufang plane, we expect this approach to have implications in all mathematical physics related with exceptional Lie Groups of type $G_{2},F_{4}$ and $E_{6}$.

Dixon-Rosenfeld Lines and the Standard Model

We present three new coset manifolds named Dixon-Rosenfeld lines that are similar to Rosenfeld projective lines except over the Dixon algebra $\mathbb{C}\otimes\mathbb{H}\otimes\mathbb{O}$. Three different Lie groups are found as isometry groups of these coset manifolds using Tits' formula. We demonstrate how Standard Model interactions with the Dixon algebra in recent work from Furey and Hughes can be uplifted to tensor products of division algebras and Jordan algebras for a single generation of fermions. The Freudenthal-Tits construction clarifies how the three Dixon-Rosenfeld projective lines are contained within $\mathbb{C}\otimes\mathbb{H}\otimes J_{2}(\mathbb{O})$, $\mathbb{O}\otimes J_{2}(\mathbb{C}\otimes\mathbb{H})$, and $\mathbb{C}\otimes\mathbb{O}\otimes J_{2}(\mathbb{H})$.

A minimal and non-alternative realisation of the Cayley plane

The compact 16-dimensional Moufang plane, also known as the Cayley plane, has traditionally been defined through the lens of octonionic geometry. In this study, we present a novel approach, demonstrating that the Cayley plane can be defined in an equally clean, straightforward and more economic way using two different division and composition algebras: the paraoctonions and the Okubo algebra. The result is quite surprising since paraoctonions and Okubo algebra possess a weaker algebraic structure than the octonions, since they are non-alternative and do not uphold the Moufang identities. Intriguingly, the real Okubo algebra has $\text{SU}\left(3\right)$ as automorphism group, which is a classical Lie group, while octonions and paraoctonions have an exceptional Lie group of type $\text{G}_{2}$. This is remarkable, given that the projective plane defined over the real Okubo algebra is nevertheless isomorphic and isometric to the octonionic projective plane which is at the very heart of the geometric realisations of all types of exceptional Lie groups. Despite its historical ties with octonionic geometry, our research underscores the real Okubo algebra as the weakest algebraic structure allowing the definition of the compact 16-dimensional Moufang plane.

Near-Extremal Freudenthal Duality

Freudenthal duality is, as of now, the unique non-linear map on electric-magnetic (e.m.) charges which is a symmetry of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extremal black holes in Maxwell-Einstein-scalar theories in four space-time dimensions. In this paper, we present a consistent generalization of Freudenthal duality to near-extremal black holes, whose entropy is obtained within a Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity upon dimensional reduction. We name such a generalization near-extremal Freudenthal duality. Upon such a duality, two near-extremal black holes with two different (and both small) temperatures have the same entropy when their e.m. charges are related by a Freudenthal transformation. By exploiting Descartes' rule of signs as well as Sturm's Theorem, we show that our formulation of the near-extremal Freudenthal duality is analytical and unique.

Special Vinberg Cones and the Entropy of BPS Extremal Black Holes

We consider the static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat BPS extremal black holes in ungauged N = 2 D = 4 supergravity theories, in which the scalar manifold of the vector multiplets is homogeneous. By a result of Shmakova on the BPS attractor equations, the entropy of this kind of black holes can be expressed only in terms of their electric and magnetic charges, provided that the inverse of a certain quadratic map (uniquely determined by the prepotential of the theory) is given. This inverse was previously known just for the cases in which the scalar manifold of the theory is a homogeneous symmetric space. In this paper we use Vinberg's theory of homogeneous cones to determine an explicit expression for such an inverse, under the assumption that the scalar manifold is homogeneous, but not necessarily symmetric. As immediate consequence, we get a formula for the entropy of BPS black holes that holds in any model of N = 2 supergravity with homogeneous scalar manifold.

Special Vinberg cones, invariant admissible cubics and special real manifolds

By Vinberg theory any homogeneous convex cone $\mathcal V$ may be realized as the cone of positive Hermitian matrices in a $T$-algebra of generalised matrices. The level hypersurfaces $\mathcal V_{q} \subset \mathcal V$ of homogeneous cubic polynomials $q$ with positive definite Hessian (symmetric) form $g_q := - \operatorname{Hess}(\log(q))|_{T \mathcal V_q}$ are the {\it special real manifolds}. Such manifolds occur as scalar manifolds of the vector multiplets in $N=2$, $D=5$ supergravity and, through the $r$-map, correspond to Kähler scalar manifolds in $N = 2$ $D = 4$ supergravity. We offer a simplified exposition of the Vinberg theory in terms of $\operatorname{Nil}$-algebras (= the subalgebras of upper triangular matrices in Vinberg $T$-algebras) and we use it to describe all rational functions on a special Vinberg cone that are $G_0$- or $G'$- invariant, where $G_0$ is the unimodular subgroup of the solvable group $G$ acting simply transitively on the cone, and $G'$ is the unipotent radical of $G_0$. The results are used to determine $G_0$- and $G'$-invariant cubic polynomials $q$ that are {\it admissible} (i.e. such that the hypersurface $ \mathcal V_q=\{ q=1\}\cap \mathcal V $ has positive definite Hessian form $g_q$) for rank $2$ and rank $3$ special Vinberg cones. We get in this way examples of continuous families of non-homogeneous special real manifolds of cohomogeneity less than or equal to two.

Classification of real and complex 3-qutrit states

In this paper we classify the orbits of the group SL(3,F)^3 on the space F^3\otimes F^3\otimes F^3 for F=C and F=R. This is known as the classification of complex and real 3-qutrit states. We also give an overview of physical theories where these classifications are relevant.

Monstrous M-theory

In $26+1$ space-time dimensions, we introduce a gravity theory whose massless spectrum can be acted upon by the Monster group when reduced to $25+1$ dimensions. This theory generalizes M-theory in many respects and we name it Monstrous M-theory, or M$^{2}$-theory. Upon Kaluza-Klein reduction to $25+1$ dimensions, the M$^{2}$-theory spectrum irreducibly splits as $\mathbf{1}\oplus\mathbf{196,883}$, where $\mathbf{1}$ is identified with the dilaton, and $\mathbf{196,883}$ is the dimension of the smallest non-trivial representation of the Monster. This provides a field theory explanation of the lowest instance of the Monstrous Moonshine, and it clarifies the definition of the Monster as the automorphism group of the Griess algebra, by showing that such an algebra is not merely a sum of unrelated spaces, but descends from massless states for M$^{2}$-theory, which includes Horowitz and Susskind's bosonic M-theory as a subsector. Further evidence is provided by the decomposition of the coefficients of the partition function of Witten's extremal Monster SCFT in terms of representations of $SO_{24}$, the massless little group in $25+1$; the purely bosonic nature of the involved $SO_{24}$-representations may be traced back to the unique feature of $24$ dimensions, which allow for a non-trivial generalization of the triality holding in $8$ dimensions. Last but not least, a certain subsector of M$^{2}$-theory, when coupled to a Rarita-Schwinger massless field in $26+1$, exhibits the same number of bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom; we cannot help but conjecture the existence of a would-be $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity theory in $26+1$ space-time dimensions.

Beyond the standard model with six-dimensional spinors

6D spinors with $Spin(3,3)$ symmetry are utilized to efficiently encode three generations of matter. $E_{8(-24)}$ is shown to contain physically relevant subgroups with representations for GUT groups, spacetime symmetries, three generations of the standard model fermions, and Higgs bosons. Pati-Salam, $SU(5)$, and $Spin(10)$ grand unified theories are found when a single generation is isolated. For spacetime symmetries, $Spin(4,2)$ may be used for conformal symmetry, $AdS_5\rightarrow dS_4$, or simply broken to $Spin(3,1)$ of Minkowski space. Another class of representations finds $Spin(2,2)$ and can give $AdS_3$ with various GUTs. An action for three generations of fermions in the Majorana-Weyl spinor ${\bf 128}$ of $Spin(4,12)$ is found with $Spin(3)$ flavor symmetry inside $E_{8(-24)}$. The ${\bf 128}$ of $Spin(4,12)$ can be regarded as the tangent space to a particular pseudo-Riemannian form of the octo-octonionic Rosenfeld projective plane $E_{8(-24)}/Spin(4,12)= (\mathbb{O}_s\times\mathbb{O})\mathbb{P}^2$.

A magic approach to octonionic Rosenfeld spaces

In his study on the geometry of Lie groups, Rosenfeld postulated a strict relation between all real forms of exceptional Lie groups and the isometries of projective and hyperbolic spaces over the (rank-2) tensor product of Hurwitz algebras taken with appropriate conjugations. Unfortunately, the procedure carried out by Rosenfeld was not rigorous, since many of the theorems he had been using do not actually hold true in the case of algebras that are not alternative nor power-associative. A more rigorous approach to the definition of all the planes presented more than thirty years ago by Rosenfeld in terms of their isometry group, can be considered within the theory of coset manifolds, which we exploit in this work, by making use of all real forms of Magic Squares of order three and two over Hurwitz normed division algebras and their split versions. Within our analysis, we find 7 pseudo-Riemannian symmetric coset manifolds which seemingly cannot have any interpretation within Rosenfeld's framework. We carry out a similar analysis for Rosenfeld lines, obtaining that there are a number of pseudo-Riemannian symmetric cosets which do not have any interpretation à la Rosenfeld.

BPS Black Hole Entropy and Attractors in Very Special Geometry. Cubic Forms, Gradient Maps and their Inversion

We consider Bekenstein-Hawking entropy and attractors in extremal BPS black holes of $\mathcal{N}=2$, $D=4$ ungauged supergravity obtained as reduction of minimal, matter-coupled $D=5$ supergravity. They are generally expressed in terms of solutions to an inhomogeneous system of coupled quadratic equations, named BPS system, depending on the cubic prepotential as well as on the electric-magnetic fluxes in the extremal black hole background. Focussing on homogeneous non-symmetric scalar manifolds (whose classification is known in terms of $L(q,P,\dot{P})$ models), under certain assumptions on the Clifford matrices pertaining to the related cubic prepotential, we formulate and prove an invertibility condition for the gradient map of the corresponding cubic form (to have a birational inverse map which is an homogeneous polynomial of degree four), and therefore for the solutions to the BPS system to be explicitly determined, in turn providing novel, explicit expressions for the BPS black hole entropy and the related attractors as solution of the BPS attractor equations. After a general treatment, we present a number of explicit examples with $\dot{P}=0$, such as $L(q,P)$, $1\leqslant q\leqslant 3$ and $P\geqslant 1$,or $L(q,1)$, $4\leqslant q\leqslant 9$, and one model with $\dot{P}=1$, namely $L(4,1,1)$. We also briefly comment on Kleinian signatures and split algebras. In particular, we provide, for the first time, the explicit form of the BPS black hole entropy and of the related BPS attractors for the infinite class of $L(1,P)$ $P\geqslant 2$ non-symmetric models of $\mathcal{N}=2$, $D=4$ supergravity.

Spontaneous scalarization in (A)dS gravity at zero temperature

We study spontaneous scalarization of electrically charged extremal black holes in $D\geq 4$ spacetime dimensions. Such a phenomenon is caused by the symmetry breaking due to quartic interactions of the scalar -- Higgs potential and Stueckelberg interaction with electromagnetic and gravitational fields, characterized by the couplings $a$ and $b$, respectively. We use the entropy representation of the states in the vicinity of the horizon, apply the inverse attractor mechanism for the scalar field, and analyze analytically the thermodynamic stability of the system using the laws of thermodynamics. As a result, we obtain that the scalar field condensates on the horizon only in spacetimes which are asymptotically non-flat, $Λ\neq 0$ (dS or AdS), and whose extremal black holes have non-planar horizons $k=\pm 1$, provided that the mass $m$ of the scalar field belongs to a mass interval (area code) different for each set of the boundary conditions specified by $(Λ,k)$. A process of scalarization describes a second order phase transition of the black hole, from the extremal Reissner-Nordström (A)dS one, to the corresponding extremal hairy one. Furthermore, for the transition to happen, the interaction has to be strong enough, and all physical quantities on the horizon depend at most on the effective Higgs-Stueckelberg interaction $am^2-2b$. Most of our results are general, valid for any parameter and any spacetime dimension.

Black hole attractors and U(1) Fayet-Iliopoulos gaugings: analysis and classification

We classify the critical points of the effective black hole potential which governs the attractor mechanism taking place at the horizon of static dyonic extremal black holes in $\mathcal{N}=2$, $D=4$ Maxwell-Einstein supergravity with $U(1)$ Fayet-Iliopoulos gaugings. We use a manifestly symplectic covariant formalism, and we consider both spherical and hyperbolic horizons, recognizing the relevant sub-classes to which some representative examples belong. We also exploit projective special Kähler geometry of vector multiplets scalar manifolds, the $U$-duality-invariant quartic structure (and 2-polarizations thereof) in order to retrieve and generalize various expressions of the entropy of asymptotically AdS$_{4}$ BPS black holes, in the cases in which the scalar manifolds are symmetric spaces. Finally, we present a novel static extremal black hole solution to the $STU$ model, in which the dilaton interpolates between an hyperbolic near-horizon geometry and AdS$_{4}$ at infinity.

Octonionic Planes and Real Forms of G2, F4 and E6

In this work we present a useful way to introduce the octonionic projective and hyperbolic plane through the use of Veronese vectors. Then we focus on their relation with the exceptional Jordan algebra and show that the Veronese vectors are the rank-one elements of the algebra. We then study groups of motions over the octonionic plane recovering all real forms of G2, F4and E6 groups and finally give a classification of all octonionic and split-octonionic planes as symmetric spaces.
