Spin fluctuations, susceptibility and the dipole oscillation of a nearly ferromagnetic Fermi gas

We discuss the spin fluctuations and the role played by the magnetic susceptibility in an atomic Fermi gas interacting with positive scattering length. Both thermal and quantum fluctuations are considered. Using a sum rule approach and recent {\it ab initio} Monte Carlo results for the magnetic susceptibility of uniform matter we provide explicit predictions for the frequency of the spin dipole oscillation of a gas trapped by a harmonic potential and discuss the deviations from the behaviour of an ideal gas when the system approaches the ferromagnetic transition. The role of the Landau's parameters in the characterization of the magnetic properties is also discussed.

Spin oscillations of the normal polarized Fermi gas at Unitarity

Using density functional theory in a time dependent approach we determine the frequencies of the compressional modes of the normal phase of a Fermi gas at unitarity as a function of its polarization. Our energy functional accounts for the typical elastic deformations exhibited by Landau theory of Fermi liquids. The comparison with the available experiments is biased by important collisional effects affecting both the {\it in phase} and the {\it out of phase} oscillations even at the lowest temperatures. New experiments in the collisionless regime would provide a crucial test of the applicability of Landau theory to the dynamics of these strongly interacting normal Fermi gases.

Density correlations and dynamical Casimir emission of Bogoliubov phonons in modulated atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a theory of the density correlations that appear in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate as a consequence of the dynamical Casimir emission of pairs of Bogoliubov phonons when the atom-atom scattering length is modulated in time. Different regimes as a function of the temporal shape of the modulation are identified and a simple physical picture of the phenomenon is discussed. Analytical expressions for the density correlation function are provided for the most significant limiting cases. This theory is able to explain some unexpected features recently observed in numerical calculations of Hawking radiation from analog black holes.

Numerical observation of Hawking radiation from acoustic black holes in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

We report numerical evidence of Hawking emission of Bogoliubov phonons from a sonic horizon in a flowing one-dimensional atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The presence of Hawking radiation is revealed from peculiar long-range patterns in the density-density correlation function of the gas. Quantitative agreement between our fully microscopic calculations and the prediction of analog models is obtained in the hydrodynamic limit. New features are predicted and the robustness of the Hawking signal against a finite temperature discussed.

Non-local density correlations as signal of Hawking radiation in BEC acoustic black holes

We have used the analogy between gravitational systems and non-homogeneous fluid flows to calculate the density-density correlation function of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an acoustic black hole. The emission of correlated pairs of phonons by Hawking-like process results into a peculiar long-range density correlation. Quantitative estimations of the effect are provided for realistic experimental configurations.

Radiation induced force between two planar waveguides

We study the electromagnetic force exerted on a pair of parallel slab waveguides by the light propagating through them. We have calculated the dependence of the force on the slab separation by means of the Maxwell--Stress tensor formalism and we have discussed its main features for the different propagation modes: spatially symmetric (antisymmetric) modes give rise to an attractive (repulsive) interaction. We have derived the asymptotic behaviors of the force at small and large separation and we have quantitatively estimated the mechanical deflection induced on a realistic air-bridge structure.

Deterministic Entanglement via Molecular Dissociation in Integrated Atom Optics

Deterministic entanglement of neutral cold atoms can be achieved by combining several already available techniques like the creation/dissociation of neutral diatomic molecules, manipulating atoms with micro fabricated structures (atom chips) and detecting single atoms with almost 100% efficiency. Manipulating this entanglement with integrated/linear atom optics will open a new perspective for quantum information processing with neutral atoms.

Photon energy lifter

We propose a time-dependent photonic structure, in which the carrier frequency of an optical pulse is shifted without changing its shape. The efficiency of the device takes advantage of slow group velocities of light attainable in periodic photonic structures. The frequency shifting effect is quantitatively studied by means of Finite Difference Time Domain simulations for realistic systems with optical parameters of conventional silicon technology.

Casimir forces between defects in one-dimensional quantum liquids

We discuss the effective interactions between two localized perturbations in one-dimensional (1D) quantum liquids. For non-interacting fermions, the interactions exhibit Friedel oscillations, giving rise to a RKKY-type interaction familiar from impurity spins in metals. In the interacting case, at low energies, a Luttinger liquid description applies. In the case of repulsive fermions, the Friedel oscillations of the interacting system are replaced, at long distances, by a universal Casimir-type interaction which depends only on the sound velocity and decays inversely with the separation. The Casimir-type interaction between localized perturbations embedded in a fermionic environment gives rise to a long range coupling between quantum dots in ultracold Fermi gases, opening a novel alternative to couple qubits with neutral atoms. We also briefly discuss the case of bosonic quantum liquids in which the interaction between weak impurities turns out to be short ranged, decaying exponentially on the scale of the healing length.

Vortex liquids and vortex quantum Hall states in trapped rotating Bose gases

We discuss the feasibility of quantum Hall states of vortices in trapped low-density two-dimensional Bose gases with large particle interactions. For interaction strengths larger than a critical dimensionless 2D coupling constant $g_c \approx 0.6$, upon increasing the rotation frequency, the system is shown to spatially separate into vortex lattice and melted vortex lattice (vortex liquid) phases. At a first critical frequency, the lattice melts completely, and strongly correlated vortex and particle quantum Hall liquids coexist in inner respectively outer regions of the gas cloud. Finally, at a second critical frequency, the vortex liquid disappears and the strongly correlated particle quantum Hall state fills the whole sample.

Zero temperature damping of Bose-Einstein condensate oscillations by vortex-antivortex pair creation

We investigate vortex-antivortex pair creation in a supersonically expanding and contracting quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature. For sufficiently large amplitude condensate oscillations, pair production provides the leading dissipation mechanism. The condensate oscillations decay in a nonexponential fashion, and the dissipation rate depends strongly on the oscillation amplitude. These features allow to distinguish the decay due to pair creation from other possible damping mechanisms. Experimental observation of the predicted oscillation behavior of the superfluid gas provides a direct confirmation of the hydrodynamical analogy of quantum electrodynamics and quantum vortex dynamics in two spatial dimensions.
