Statistical properties for compositions of standard maps with increasing coefficent

The Chirikov standard map family is a one-parameter family of volume-preserving maps exhibiting hyperbolicity on a `large' but noninvariant subset of phase space. Based on this predominant hyperbolicity and numerical experiments, it is anticipated that the standard map has positive metric entropy for many parameter values. However, rigorous analysis is notoriously difficult, and it remains an open question whether the standard map has positive metric entropy for any parameter value. Here we study a problem of intermediate difficulty: compositions of standard maps with increasing parameter. When the coefficients increase to infinity at a sufficiently fast polynomial rate, we obtain a Strong Law, Central Limit Theorem, and quantitative mixing estimate for Holder observables. The methods used are not specific to the standard map and apply to a class of compositions of `prototypical' 2D maps with hyperbolicity on `most' of phase space.

Lyapunov exponents for random perturbations of some area-preserving maps including the standard map

We consider a large class of 2D area-preserving diffeomorphisms that are not uniformly hyperbolic but have strong hyperbolicity properties on large regions of their phase spaces. A prime example is the Standard map. Lower bounds for Lyapunov exponents of such systems are very hard to estimate, due to the potential switching of "stable" and "unstable" directions. This paper shows that with the addition of (very) small random perturbations, one obtains with relative ease Lyapunov exponents reflecting the geometry of the deterministic maps.

The Selgrade decomposition for linear semiflows on Banach spaces

We extend Selgrade's Theorem, Morse spectrum, and related concepts to the setting of linear skew product semiflows on a separable Banach bundle. We recover a characterization, well-known in the finite-dimensional setting, of exponentially separated subbundles as attractor-repeller pairs for the associated semiflow on the projective bundle.

Absolute continuity of stable foliations for mappings of Banach spaces

We prove the absolute continuity of stable foliations for mappings of Banach spaces satisfying conditions consistent with time-t maps of certain classes of dissipative PDEs. This property is crucial for passing information from submanifolds transversal to the stable foliation to the rest of the phase space; it is also used in proofs of ergodicity. Absolute continuity of stable foliations is well known in finite dimensional hyperbolic theory. On Banach spaces, the absence of nice geometric properties poses some additional difficulties.

Characterization of dominated splittings for operator cocycles acting on Banach spaces

Versions of the Oseledets multiplicative ergodic theorem for cocycles acting on infinite-dimensional Banach spaces have been investigated since the pioneering work of Ruelle in 1982 and are a topic of continuing research interest. For a cocycle to induce a continuous splitting in which the growth in one subbundle exponentially dominates the growth in another requires additional assumptions; a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of such a dominated splitting was recently given by J. Bochi and N. Gourmelon for invertible finite-dimensional cocycles in discrete time. We extend this result to cocycles of injective bounded linear maps acting on Banach spaces (in both discrete and continuous time) using an essentially geometric approach based on a notion of approximate singular value decomposition in Banach spaces. Our method is constructive, and in the finite-dimensional case yields explicit growth estimates on the dominated splitting which may be of independent interest.

Entropy, volume growth and SRB measures for Banach space mappings

We consider $C^2$ Fréchet differentiable mappings of Banach spaces leaving invariant compactly supported Borel probability measures, and study the relation between entropy and volume growth for a natural notion of volume defined on finite dimensional subspaces. SRB measures are characterized as exactly those measures for which entropy is equal to volume growth on unstable manifolds, equivalently the sum of positive Lyapunov exponents of the map. In addition to numerous difficulties incurred by our infinite-dimensional setting, a crucial aspect to the proof is the technical point that the volume elements induced on unstable manifolds are regular enough to permit distortion control of iterated determinant functions. The results here generalize previously known results for diffeomorphisms of finite dimensional Riemannian manifolds, and are applicable to dynamical systems defined by large classes of dissipative parabolic PDEs.

Asymptotic periodicity in networks of degrade-and-fire oscillators

Networks of coupled degrade-and-fire (DF) oscillators are simple dynamical models of assemblies of interacting self-repressing genes. For mean-field interactions, which most mathematical studies have assumed so far, every trajectory must approach a periodic orbit. Moreover, asymptotic cluster distributions can be computed explicitly in terms of coupling intensity, and a massive collection of distributions collapses when this intensity passes a threshold. Here, we show that most of these dynamical features persist for an arbitrary coupling topology. In particular, we prove that, in any system of DF oscillators for which in and out coupling weights balance, trajectories with reasonable firing sequences must be asymptotically periodic, and periodic orbits are uniquely determined by their firing sequence. In addition to these structural results, illustrative examples are presented, for which the dynamics can be entirely described.

Population Dynamics of Globally Coupled Degrade-and-Fire Oscillators

This paper reports the analysis of the dynamics of a model of pulse-coupled oscillators with global inhibitory coupling. The model is inspired by experiments on colonies of bacteria-embedded synthetic genetic circuits. The total population can be either of finite (arbitrary) size or infinite, and is represented by a one-dimensional profile. Profiles can be discontinuous, possibly with infinitely many jumps. Their time evolution is governed by a singular differential equation. We address the corresponding initial value problem and characterize the dynamics' main features. In particular, we prove that trajectory behaviors are asymptotically periodic, with period only depending on the profile (and on the model parameters). A criterion is obtained for the existence of the corresponding periodic orbits, which reveals the existence of a sharp transition as the coupling parameter is increased. The transition separates a regime where any profile can be obtained in the limit of large times, to a situation where only trajectories with sufficiently large groups of synchronized oscillators perdure.
